MEMBERS of the SAPolice Service(SAPS) in KwaZa-khele, Port Eliza-beth are looking

for information on the wherea-bouts of Nothemba Thanda inconnection with child abandon-ment and fraud.

Thanda (31) of KwaZakhele gavebirth to a premature baby througha caesarian section at Dora NginzaHospital two weeks ago. But she dis-appeared while the nurses weretreating the premature baby at theBG3 Antenatal Ward.

Before that, Notemba allegedlystole money and other valuablesfrom unsuspecting nursing sisters.

“She came across as someone whowas experiencing problems and wefell for her lies and became sympa-thetic,” said Sr Nokuzola Lawu.Nothemba told them she was rapedby a stranger whilst pregnant withher boyfriend’s child.

According to Lawu, Nothembawas very convincing when tellingthe nurses that her boyfriend andthe father of her newborn baby hadcommitted suicide.

“We became so close to her. Weeven thought she was suicidal andgave in to her demands,” said SrLawu, adding that Nothemba firstasked for money to go and bury herboyfriend. Sr Khanyiswa Magidimi-si gave her R500. She even went tothe nurses’ houses, wore theirclothes, slept and used their cell-phones “as she was trying to sortout her problems”.

The other victim was Sr Nom-bulelo Fongqo.

“She’s a manipulative liar with asweet tongue. She abused their gen-erosity,” said Senior Social Worker

Pamela Rubushe. Rubushe is the on-ly one Nothemba could not con, shetold PE Express Indaba.

“She came to me asking for moneybecause the father of her child had

Before her disappearing act,

Nqabakazi has signed papers withSocial Workers to look after thenew-born.

FOUR people died and ten were injured in aminibus-taxi accident on the N2 near Graham-stown on Saturday.

According to police spokesperson, CaptMali Govender, the taxi was transporting pas-sengers from PE to Grahamstown. The acci-dent occurred at about 8am, approximately30km from Grahamstown. Some of the passen-gers were on their way to Pedi for a funeral.

“According to the driver he lost control overthe vehicle after one of the tyres burst. It over-turned and landed on its roof. No other vehi-cles were involved in the accident,” said Gov-ender.

Traffic came to a stand still as the 14 passen-gers were lying all over the road and the roadhad to be closed. An eye witness said shockedpassengers and other motorists assisted thosewho were severely injured until the rescueworkers arrived on the scene.

The deceased died on the scene of the acci-dent. They were Sebenza Gladys Mahote (62)from KwaZakhele, Nolethu Elizabeth Moanga(59) from New Brighton, Nonkululeko Luvuno(42) from NU 8 Motherwell and Luyanda Mat-shaya (40) from KwaZakhele.

The other passengers were all taken to hos-pital in Grahamstown and those in a criticalcondition were taken to PE.

A case of culpable homicide is being investi-gated.

According to Eastern Cape CorporateCommunications Lt Col Sibongile Soci,child neglect always comes to the fore dur-ing school holidays so police would like towarn parents and care-givers always to putmeasures in place to ensure the safety ofthe children.

“The South African Police Services(SAPS) places high value on safety of ourchildren. Protection of young lives is, fun-damentally, about doing what is right,”said Lt Col Soci.

Soci said policing always goes beyondthe apprehending of criminals, but as lawenforcers, thepolice acknowledges that the

upbringing and protection of children isalso their responsibility.

In committing to be of service, the policehave advised that:

* Parents must always leave their chil-dren with trusted friends;

* Parents must always know wheretheir children are playing, and ensure thatthey do not play with fire or dangerous orpoisonous substances;

* Parents must minimise the radius ofthe playing places for their children;

* Children must avoid walking alone atnight;

* Children must avoid consuming alco-hol;

* Children must be vigilant of friendsthey meet on social networks, and if theyhave to meet such persons, they must en-sure at all times that they are with friends.

PE Childline and Family Centre is lookingfor the mother of Sanelisiwe Funde.

The whereabouts of the biological motherknown as Nomawethu Funde are unknown.She was last seen in May 2012 in Joe SlovoWest informal Settlement where she aban-doned the above-named child, who is 15months old, at a place where she was staying.

The father of the child is known only asSiyabulela and his whereabouts are un-known.

Anyone who might have information per-taining to the whereabouts of NomawethuFunde or the father Siyabulela is asked tocontact social worker, Mr N. Ndlovu, at0 041 453 0441.

HISTORY was made when a pilotproject Mini Library (Mini Lib) forthevisually impairedwasofficiallylaunched at Elukhanyisweni Pub-lic Library in KwaNobuhle, Uiten-hage last Thursday.

This groundbreaking project, apartnership between the ProvincialDepartment of Sport, Recreation, Artsand Culture under MEC Xoliswa Tom,South African National Council forthe Blind, SA Library Services andNelson Mandela Bay Municipalitywas initiated toprovide library servic-es for the blind community.

Elukhanyisweni became one of the

seven public libraries in the provinceprovided with furniture, equipmentand training accessibility to benefitthe visually disabled.

Theequipment includesaudio-read-ers, text readers, computer soft-ware,Braille books and other services sup-plied by SA Library for the Blind.

According to Portfolio CouncillorAndile Mfunda who spoke on behalf ofNelson Mandela Bay mayor ZanoxoloWayile who could not attend, thisminilib showed that “our governmentcares for the disabled members of ourcommunities.”

SA National Council for the Blindchairperson Xolisa Yekani agreed “itwould open up new avenues for blindpeople.” With this kind of support,Yekanisaid, theblindcanachieveany-

thing they set their sights on.“The visually impaired have a con-

stitutional right to access these serv-ices. This pilot project in the EasternCape has been so successful that weare hoping it will eventually berolled out across the country,” saidProject coordinator, Phumla Ma-hanjana.

Mahanjana said library staff arecurrently being trained to assist us-ers of the equipment and to identifyindividualswhocouldbenefit fromtheequipment. Public library workshopsare also held to train and benefit mem-bers of the local community on the us-

The SA National Council forthe Blind, the Department of Sport, Recreation, Artsand Culture, SA Library Services, Nelson Mandela BayCouncillors and Senior officials, the schools and thecultural organisations spoke in one voice whilst cele-brating the historical launch in the Eastern Cape, fol-lowing one in Humansdorp in 2010. IKHWEZI LOMSO Comprehensive Schoollearners wrote a letter to thank a Port Eliza-beth law-firm Boqwana, Loon and Connellan(BLC) Attorneys for the donations it hadmade to this Zwide township school.

PE Express Indaba has learnt that theschool’s relationship with the firm has helpedit obtain four concrete benches which areplaced strategically under trees around theplayground; an honours board on which toput the Top Grade 12 learner’s names eachyear, two soccer balls, two netball balls andan equal number of rugby balls.

“The Sports Committee of Boqwana, Loonand Connellan Attorneys Sports Commiteehosted an Annual Soccer Challenge recentlyand used the proceeds to purchase the goodsto benefit the school,” said BLC spokesperson

Sharon Lottering.The overjoyed learners wrote in part:

“Thank you for the kind interest your firmshowed in our school. We were overwhelmedby your visit and the hands-on involvementin our well-being. You have helped us to makeour school a beacon of hope.”

The learners said they were looking for-ward to recording top learners on the board;an exercise they admit will help inspire andmotivate others to give more effort in theirstudies.

They said the garden benches were highlyappreciated as they helped to give the learn-ers a sense of dignity in an environmentwhich was otherwise run down and neglect-ed. According to Lottering, the firm assistedtwo IKhwezi Lomso Comprehensive Schoollearners at the Moot Court Competition in2010 and was looking forward to assisting twomore in the next competition.

THE United Kingdom based Bath RugbyClub donated rugby kit to benefit thelearners of Emsengeni Primary School inZwide, Port Elizabeth recently.

The event, which was attended by EP RugbyCEO Anele Pamba, EP Vice-President PhillipJoseph and some of EP Kings players, wasaimedat transforming the lives ofunder-privi-leged children through sport.

The club from England in association withBath Minis and LV=SOS delivered 60 items ofassortedkit to the rugbymadschoolwhichhasgiven birth to a host of rugby players in theregion including Siya Kolisi.

A delighted school principal Zandile Nocan-da mentioned that her school was recognisedbecause of their tireless efforts in rugby devel-opment led by teacher Eric Songwiqi.

“I don’t know who chose us - but we deserveit. And truth be told, we’re doing well in sportand especially rugby,” said Nocanda proudly.

We are lucky to have friends in higher plac-es. I want to thank Bath for the donations. Butwe also thank the school’s development initia-tives,” said Pamba.

“The kit really does change lives, givingchildren from all different backgrounds and ofall abilities the chance to take part in sport.

“They feel part of something, and it helpsto build their self-esteem and social skills thatmay have been missing otherwise,” said Ga-reth Chilcott, former Bath player and ambas-sador.

Current EP Kings player and former Bathplayer Luke Watson, who also played a partin thedonation, saidBath’s partnershipwouldsurely help develop rugby in the region.

“It will have a huge benefit on the local play-ing community and help some of the less fortu-nate children find passion and skill for thegame that they may not have had a chance toplay otherwise,” said Watson.

“We’re so overwhelmed by the reception.It’s unbelievable,” said Bath’s Marketing andCommunications Director Jez Curwin at theevent.

BOXING history was made whenNelson Mandela Bay Boxing SouthAfrica (BSA) officials went to super-vise a professional boxing tourna-ment in Oudtshoorn in the WesternCape at the weekend.

In the fight, Wiseman Kega fromGeorge became the Western CapeJunior bantamweight champion af-ter stopping Unathi Mndwana ofPlettenbergBay in the seventh roundof their 10-round scheduled fight.

“There was a problem in the West-ern Cape and we were asked by BSAto save the situation,” said BSA Nel-son Mandela Bay Service ProviderMthunzi Mapitiza.

BSA Western Cape Service Provid-er Mickey Klaas had a bereavementas his sister had died and was buriedin East London on Saturday. His offi-cials had to run a major tournamentwith international titles at stake inCape Town on the same day, accord-ing to Mapitiza.

cials, Ace Makaluza, Prince Mbam-baza, Stephen Simon, Lizo Jordaan,Nkosinathi Zamela and PE ExpressIndaba’s Nceba Dladla (The Masterof Ceremonies) helped SWD Develop-ment Boxing Promotions of Bongo-lethu Township successfully run itsdebut tournament. The tournamentwas sponsored by the Eden munici-pality in Oudtshoorn.

“Mickey (Klaas) could not be inany of the tournaments. There wasno way we (as BSA) on the other handcould let a debutante boxing promot-er lose out - it was also the first pro-fessional fight in the area. Fanswant-ed it. There was a lot at stake in theCape Town fight too - it had to go onso we went out of our way to assist,”said Mapitiza proudly.

But Mapitiza was quick to add: “Ofcourse BSA licensees are free to oper-ate anywhere in the country. It is on-ly regional managers or the so-calledservice providers that operate in re-gions andprovinces.Butwhere thereis an overlap, someone must go outand help - so we did and it was a re-sounding success,” said Mapitiza.

Kitas highlighted the fact thattheir fundamental aim of organiz-ing the fun run was to keep theyouth off the street and to reviveathletics in Motherwell which ischaracterized by a high rate ofcrime and alcoholism in particularamongst the youth.
