Speculation is rife that Municipal ChiefWhip Litho Suka will be reading out acomplete forensic investigation report ashe has called a special meeting with allparties’ whips today.

According to well placed sources, Sukahas summoned party leaders today to de-liberate and deliver detailed findings onthe crack-down by a task team which maysee municipal officials given the boot.

In the South African Local GovernmentAssociation (SALGA) press briefing onJuly 22, Mayor Danny Jordaan said he ex-pected the entire forensic report commis-sioned by national treasury on the munic-ipality to be completed by the end of July.“We did indicate to council that as soonas we receive the report we will table itbefore council.”

Suka earlier said council should expectfurther suspensions as the security servi-ces investigation was almost completed.“When I spoke here at the last councilmeeting, I called on corruption to be dealtwith, without fear or favour.

“I am therefore very happy to see thatsteps are being taken to address the prob-lem. We expect the security services alsoto conclude its investigation and chargethose who are suspected of wrongdoing.People who are accused must be exposedand charged,” he ended.

So far the investigations have led to anotice of intent to suspend against:

. Human Settlements boss Lindile Pe-tuna,

.Corporate Services boss Mod Ndoya-na,

.Assistant Director in the municipali-ty’s directorate for Budget and TreasuryNadia Gerwel,

. Fresh Produce market boss IsaacNokele and seven of his officials as wellas

.IPTS boss Mhleli Tshamase.Tshamase has since resigned, but some

councillors are adamant that he shouldface the music and his resignation not beaccepted by City boss Mpilo Mbambisa.“Council has not yet received his resigna-tion letter but we cannot allow Mbambisato sign off on his (Tshamase) resignationuntil he is properly investigated and paysfor his alleged wrongdoings against themetro. These people need to be held ac-countable and a free pass is just not ac-ceptable,” said a councillor who wished toremain anonymous.

A forensic investigator with 40 years ofexperience has already been appointed bythe municipality to probe allegationsagainst Ndonyana and Petuna and has amonth to provide a report to prove or dis-prove the metro’s case against the two di-rectors.

“It is a cumbersome, drawn out, longprocess that takes months if not years toconclude. At this moment we have trig-gered the process. We now wait for theresponse and then a decision by council,”said Jordaan.

‘No free pass for officials’

These are people like Gqamane who realisedthatheriskedlosingeverythingifhedidn’tstopgambling.

“When I realised that I no longer had moneyto be chowed by the machines, I stopped gam-bling,” he said.

Had he not stopped he could have ended upwhere many gamblers end.

“They lose their belongings and even proper-ties. This is a scourge that breaks up marriagesand destroys families,” Allah explained.

“It’s sad when you see people you know at

gambling resorts without the bus fare to goback home. Some people don’t even considergoing back home. They spend night after nightgambling, hoping that they will at least winback the money they started playing with,” Al-lah said.

He hopes people will attend the meeting innumbers and take the first step to ending theiraddiction - acknowledging the problem.

)The meeting will take place at 12:00 on 10August in the Nangoza Jebe Hall, Ntshekisa.Street, New Brigthon.

IN 1998 he was just a “skinny white boy” liv-ing in a Port Elizabeth township, but todayJacob Lief is investing millions of rands everyyear to change the lives of impoverishedyouth in the Bay.

Lief, the co-creator of the Ubuntu Education

Fund in Zwide, discovered his passion forhelping township children shortly after meet-ing Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula at the age of19 years. Gwaxula, who was a science teacherat a township school, offered him a job at hisschool and let Lief live with his family for fivemonths.

“That was the first time I understood whatubuntu meant,” Lief said at the launch of hisbook ‘I am because you are’ last week. Thebook chronicles his journey with Gwaxulaand the 17 years it took to build the multimil-lion rand foundation.

“The whole township community builtUbuntu with us. It wasn’t just one man’s jour-ney to change the world, but it all started ata tavern in New Brighton, when a strangeroffered me a job and a place to stay.

“Years later, I asked Banks why he did that, and his answer was simple: we looked differ-ent but we were both human, and this madeus brothers.”

Seventeen years later, they are still goingstrong. “Ubuntu believes in helping childrenfrom cradle to career, working to keep preg-nant women healthy and helping to raise thechildren until they graduate from university. We want to give children everything they de-serve – and they deserve everything.”

Banks said his greatest pride was beingable to help youth graduate with tertiary de-grees. “We have produced graduates in thetrue sense of the word. They have proved thattheir birthplace shouldn’t have to determinetheir future.”

) Lief’s book is for sale at Exclusive Booksor on the Ubuntu website at www.ubuntu-fund.org.

NELSON Mandela’s spirit of giving contin-ued unabated last week, with Zonke SPARdelivering wool, beads, knitting and cro-cheting material to the blind and semi-blindmembers of the NU9 Library in Motherwelllast Wednesday.

“Since the government made a ruling thattheblindand semi-blindmembers of the pub-lic should join the mini-labs (built inside themain library) to read books through brailleand daisy machines as well as do informa-tion technology advancement courses, wehave a number people who have decided ondoing more skills upgrading at our weeklymeetings,” Nelson Mandela Bay employeePhumza Macingwana said.According to Macingwana, though the

group found joy in the librarywork they did,

they also wanted to do handwork like knit-ting, beadwork and crocheting for theirgroup’s sustainability, but obviously lackedfunding.“That’s where we came in. We decided to

spend our 67 minutes for Mandela at the li-brary to sponsor members of the librarywith the equipment they wanted,” ZonkeSPAR’s Mercy Kula said, adding that theyhad not been able to make it on July 18 be-cause the group met on Wednesdays.“In fact, we did it because it is still Man-

by Nolitha Qangule in 2005. I am now at thestage where I train others,” said Classen, who also has a child in the group.

IF wishes were horses, beggars would ride. And if Namhla Bukani could have thingsher way, KwaNobuhle would have an eat-ery specialising in baking and doing plat-ters for the people’s big events.

The owner of Le Nubians Events andManagement Company, Bukani (33) ofNyiki Street, specialises in catering, wed-ding and events planning, decor and hiringservices.“Le Nubians was registered in 2011, but

started working last year,” said Bukani, blaming a lack of start-up capital and mar-keting as some of the reasons for startinglate. If funds become available, Bukani will

buymaterials like stoves, pans, pots andde-cor equipment. Shewould “hiremorewom-en who like cooking like me and KwaNo-buhle township events will never be thesame,” a confident Bukani said.“A lot of people in the township have to

travel to town for their event-planning andcatering needs. My plan is to provide thoseservices right on their doorstep,” she said. This would give her an opportunity to

employ some of the unemployed young peo-ple, especially girls, whowere not at schoolor in employment.Bukani, who studied travel and tourism

at Varsity College and qualified with a con-ference, exhibition and events manage-ment diploma, said she had loved cooking, and especially baking, while growing up.She spent some of her formative years

working before she studied and qualified atDamelin College in what she ultimatelyloved.“I want people to taste my platters. I am

sure they would come back and ask formore,” she said.

groupmembers say they have been in themu-sic business for quite a while now. They have performed before big crowds at

events like the Nelson Mandela Bay SplashFestival, Easter Weekend, June 16 and atevents that they themselves organised in thetownship. As for fame, The Dark Okes say they can

handle it, since they’ve been around the mu-sic industry for a while now.

PORT Elizabeth’s Mphumzi Mali never dreamtthatasimpleboardgamewouldleadtofameandmoney, but he has the trophy and the prize mon-ey to prove it.

Mali of Hlawula Street in New Brighton haswon Sedgwick’s Draughts League Title and R50000 in prize-money when he beat Vuyani Mazi-bukoofMthathaat theNangozaJebeCommuni-ty Hall in the grand finale.

And what a journey it was to the final - Malidescribed it as a highly competitive league pit-ting the great draught players in the EasternCape against each other.

“It’s a great achievement for me, consideringthe great opposition I had to face on the way towinning the league championship,” said Maliwho will be doing renovations to his home withhis money, then spoil himself a bit.

He considers Motherwell, Port Elizabeth’sMelikhaya Nonyukela as one of his toughest op-ponents.

“He was a bit tricky,” said Mali who startedthe game at 18 years of age in the 1990s undertheguidanceofgreatplayersofyore likeMzi-ka-bawo Hontoti and the late Monde Ngesi.

According to Mali, when they playeddraughts in the past, they were doing it for fun, without thinking that it would pay one day..

“We loved it because it kept us doing some-thing positive, away from crime and drugs. Ithelped sharpen our minds and we recommendit as a mind sport for school children especiallythose doing mathematics,” said Mali.

At the time, he said, they struggled to getbooks and information on draughts.

“Today, however, with the advent of Google, everything is available.”

And what’s next? “I’d like to get sponsorshipand continue playing the game against overseasopponents. There are international draughtsleagues that can take one overseas. I’d like totake my game internationally, that’s my nextstep.” – NCEBA DLADLA

THUBALETHU Boxing Club ManagerMazizi Vumazonke has apologised for alast minute venue change of a boxingtournament, initially scheduled to takeplace at Sizakele Konzi Community Hall,KwaNobuhle to Masibambane Hostel,Khayelitsha.

“We apologise but would like to statethat we made a booking three weeks agoand contacted the municipal office for afollow up,” said Vumazonke, adding thatit seemed that Nelson Mandela Bay Ama-teur Boxing Organisation’s clubs werefacedwithaseriousproblemoffindingve-nues for their tournaments.

About 13 Nelson Mandela Bay Clubsand one from the Sundays River ValleyLocal Municipality in Kirkwood partici-pated and exciting bouts were provided.

Meanwhile, KwaNobuhle’s profession-al boxer Lonwabo “Dancing Shoes” Robo-shi lost in his bid to wrestle the vacantSouth African Mini-flyweight Champion-ship from Ali Mangcotywa of Duncan Vil-lage, East London when the duo lockedhorns in a fight for the title in East Lon-don’s International Convention Centre(ICC) last Friday.

Roboshi was stopped in the 8th of their12-round scheduled bout.

This leaves Nelson Mandela Bay with-out the SA champion since 2003. Nomam-pondomise “Lily” Xotyeni is the only SAFemale Junior Lightweight champion.

Waiting in the wings and hoping to fi-nally break the ice and give the metro thecrown she had long been longing for isEastern Cape Super Middleweight cham-pion Makhosonke Zwengu.
