Matching Numerals and Quantities (1 to 5)

Early Learning Goal:

ELG 11: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a

given number.

Development Matters Statements Links:

(M-N6) Sometimes matches numeral and quantity correctly.

(M-N20) Selects the correct numeral to represent 1 to 5, then 1 to 10 objects.

Year 1 (1N4) Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the

language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least.

Ideas to meet M-N6 & M-N20:

Using this resource and suggested questions: Children to draw lines to match quantities and numerals; at times they may trace the

line.

In other areas of the classroom: Children find the correct number of objects to match the quantity; children to draw numerals in

sand or make it using playdough; children to sort counters of specific colours into groups of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
