MASJID ANGULLIA LAUNCH OF MOSQUE UPGRADING WORKS
Commencement of Upgrading Works
1. Minister for Communications and Information, Minister-in-charge of Cyber
Security and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim launched the
upgrading of Masjid Angullia earlier today (23 Feb 2019). Upgrading works will
commence in the first quarter of 2018, and is projected to be completed in the fourth
quarter of 2019. This upgrading project is part of the Mosque Upgrading Programme
(MUP), Muis’ continued efforts to upgrade our mosques to better meet the needs of
the congregation
2. Masjid Angullia was first built by the late merchant and philanthropist
Mohammad Salleh Eusoff Angullia in 1890. The 128-year-old mosque was rebuilt in
the 1970s and currently serves the religious needs of workers in the bustling Little
India district as well as the residents of Farrer Park.
Preserving Heritage – Masjid Angullia Gatehouse
3. The original Gatehouse was conserved by the Urban Redevelopment Authority
in 2014 and will be restored along with the upgrading project. A new courtyard will be
built between the gatehouse and the proposed new mosque. The current mosque
building will be demolished and a new four-storey building will be constructed.
Increased prayer space and a new lease of life
4. When completed, the construction project will add 1,000 more prayer spaces,
accommodating 2,500 congregants at any one time. The new mosque’s main prayer
hall will be moved to the second storey which will allow for a larger multi-purpose area
on the first storey. This can double up as additional prayer spaces on most Fridays
and during Eid prayers.
5. The new building will feature a lattice steel dome, as well as a minaret.
Additionally, an auditorium and a roof terrace on the fourth storey will also be
constructed. Other enhancements include new classrooms and a dedicated floor just
for female congregants.
Community Effort
6. The cost of construction for the mosque is approximately $6.35 million with the
Mosque Building and Mendaki Fund (MBMF) funding $500,000. The Mosque
Management Board has begun reaching out to the Muslim community for donations
to raise the remainder amount required for the upgrading project.
Mosque Temporary Closure
7. Throughout the construction works, the mosque will be closed from public use
following its last Friday prayer on Friday, 23 February 2018. Congregants are
encouraged to proceed to six nearby mosques; Masjid Abdul Gafoor, Alkaff Upper
Serangoon, Bencoolen, Hjh Fatimah, Malabar and Sultan. The mosque office
however, will remain to function and to receive donations from the community.

MOSQUE FEATURES
Barrier-Free Accessibility
1. The mosque will incorporate elderly-friendly features such as a new lift, which
will allow ease of movement from the ablution area to the prayer hall for physically
challenged and elderly congregants. There will be also be dedicated facilities for
women, such as ablution area and toilets.
2. The mosque will also cater to the needs of congregants who are visually
impaired. The mosque will install braille signs handrails and raised markers on the
floor, steps and ramps to aid the visual impaired to better navigate the mosque.
3. For the hearing impaired, a Hearing Enhancement System will be installed to
assist persons with hearing impairment and the elderly with hearing aids. Special
areas in the prayer hall, as well as seminar and conference rooms will be installed with
an induction loop to provide people with hearing aids a clearer broadcast of Friday
sermon or lectures. An international symbol of access for hearing loss is conspicuously
displayed where the hearing enhancement facilities are available.
Optimising Space
4. The mosque will incorporate two classrooms which can be expanded and
converted into additional prayer space. Similarly, the first storey car parking space and
the fourth storey auditorium can also be converted into extended prayer space when
required.
Design Features
5. The mosque is designed as a modern translation from its traditional Rander
architecture, a small village in Gujarat, West India which has been typically known as
a “City of Mosques”. It will be topped with a lattice dome made of steel structures, and
a minaret which is a new feature to the mosque. From its main prayer hall, congregants
can look up to a decorative skylight which brings light into the space, enhancing the
spiritual experience in the new mosque building.
