The Seniors of Fairfield are an active, fifty plus, fun-loving group of couples and singles who enjoy fellowship, monthly trips, and various activities together. If you or your spouse is fifty or older, a newcomer to Fairfield Village or have lived here in Fairfield for some time but have never attended one of our functions, you are cordially invited. Come

and be a part of our fun-loving group. We’re sure you will enjoy it.

Fairfield’s Fifty PlusFun-Loving Group

The Fairfield Seniors

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we’ve taken over a hundred trips.  The Fairfield Gazette’s web site has back issues available from September, 2004.  In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken. You can get the complete listing at… http://home.comcast.net/~seniorgroup/History.htm

OUR MARCH BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Friday, March 6 a trip to the “80th annual Azalea Trail”. The Fairfield 50 Plus Fun-Loving Group has the good fortune of having the use of the Senior Precinct Bus on March 6th, allowing our group to be included amongst the honored guests to prestigious River Oaks and Tanglewood Neighborhoods for the “80th Annual Azalea Trail” sponsored by the River Oaks Garden Club. Our tickets to this event will admit us entry into seven different tour venues. Four of these tour venues are private residences (Think Mansions!). The other three venues are RIENZI, BAYOU BEND, and ROGC FORUM of civics Buildings and Gardens. Unfortunately, wheelchair access or restroom facilities are not available at the four private residences. We will be dinning at one of our favorite eateries “Cleburne’s Cafeteria, after concluding our Garden Tours around 5:00 p.m. Remember that Cleburne’s Cafeteria does not take credit cards, checks or cash only. The cost of this trip is $17.00 plus the cost of your meal at Cleburne’s. To get your name on the list for this great trip, just… Call either Pam Lewis at 281-746-7430 or email her: [email protected] OR call Beverly Lewis at 281-758-5033. Checks are to be made out to: Fairfield 50 Plus. Checks can be given to: Pam Lewis, Beverly Lewis, or Mary Lou Cook. They can also be mailed to Pam Lewis at 21202 Catherine Anne Court, Cypress, Texas 77433. Please Note: Checks must be received by February 25th. Please Note: We will depart from a new place, due to construction; the Fairfield Baptist Church’s southeast parking area, by the fence bordering the storage business. There is a convenient entrance off Cypresswood Drive. We depart promptly at 11:00 a.m. Please be there by 10:45 a.m. There should be plenty of time to enjoy a hearty breakfast with the Friday morning group at the Blackhorse before the bus departs

OUR MARCH ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, March 12: Our Monthly pot Luck, it is at the Lakeside Trails Club House and

starts at 6:30 p.m. However, plan on being there by 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. This month instead of games after our meal as usual, we have some exceptional entertainment scheduled. Don’t miss out on this! I’m not sure you know it or not: but, we have a bluegrass and, ld time gospel music band that was formed right here in Fairfield several years ago, two of the band members our members of our senior group.  The band’s name is “Almost Heaven Bluegrass Band” and they will perform for our group at this month’s pot luck. They have played at several rest homes in the area, the “Glazier Senior Education Center” in Houston and they also play at the “Cypress Historical Society Picnic”.   They even have a website so check it out: www.bluegrassrising.net .  We hope to see you there to enjoy this special entertainment at our March pot luck

Tuesday, March 17: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a St Patrick snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our March, 15 weekly e-newsletter.

Thursday, March 26: Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House It starts around 6:30 p.m., and we have plenty of room at the club house. We would like to see you there to enjoy an evening of games and fellowship with us. Just bring a little snack and plan on having lots of fun. There are some card games, some games that the members bring and, of course, dominoes.

For additional information on activities other than trips: Call Mary Lou Cook @ 281-304-8359.

We recommend that you check our website regularly. Things do change occasionally from the time this article was submitted, and it is possible that some of the information in this article has changed. http://home.comcast.net/~seniorgroup/

OUR FUN-LOVERS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: An event reminder. It is emailed each week to our members and others who have requested it. It provides updated information on any changes from what appears here in the Gazette. We also include member birthdays and prayer requests, other news and items of interest, and links to all our web pages. If you would like to receive our weekly newsletter, send your email address, to [email protected]

Around Fairfield

No, it’s not the Music Man theme, but the story of the commercial real estate growth in our Fairfield neighborhood. Several projects have recently been completed while others are currently under construction. Most of the commercial space in the front of Fairfield will be built-out in the next year and a half. Starting from east to west along our US290 frontage area, the construction activity is as follows: • The Fairfield Creek Estates senior housing for those 55 and over

has been completed. It includes 140 one and two bedroom units. • Methodist Hospital has broken ground for an emergency center

in a triangular tract in front of the senior housing. • Memorial Hermann Hospital has broken ground for a 32 acre

campus on the old golf driving range site for a $168 Million medical complex. Initially, the project will include a six story 125,000 sq. ft. medical office building and a 40,000 sq. ft. convenient care center. A second phase will add an acute care hospital featuring 8 operating rooms, a 16 bed ICU, a neonatal intensive care unit and a cardiac catheterization unit.

• Good Shepherd United Methodist Church has begun construction on a new 1200 seat sanctuary. A majority of the structural steel has been erected. This worship center will include space for a choir for up to 90 members. The project is to be completed in mid-August.

• The 20 acres to the west of the GSUMC is under construction for a Fairfield Marketplace. This site includes a 123,000 sq. ft. Kroger store surrounded by a number of restaurants (including Wendy’s & Russo’s Pizza), an office building with Vision Source and a dentist, retail stores and a Kroger gas station.

• Across the street from the Fairfield fire station, a Kwik Kar & Fairfield Automotive center with six bays has recently opened.

• On the site of our original Fairfield Welcome Center (next to the fire station), a Walgreens store is being built. The site work is under construction and is expected to be completed this summer.

• To the west of Mason Road, the

Radler Associates has completed the shell construction of their shopping center. At the present time a Little Ceasars Pizza and L’Amour Nail salon are ready for business. A very large DiVita Dialysis center and a Four Lakes Family Dentistry are nearing construction completion. This five building complex has space for many other restaurants or shops.

• The Fairfield Ranch apartment has been completed and is starting to fill the 294 one and two bedroom units in this complex.

• To the west of HEB, the frontage road is lined with Bank of America, McDonalds, Whataburger, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-a. The balance of the space in this Fairfield Towne Center has room for additional restaurants and commercial stores. Several “Big Box” stores are contemplating building at this site.

• On the NW corner of the Houston Premium Outlet Mall, a new Shell Oil service station has been proposed.

• The Avenues at Cypress apartments have opened on the NE corner of Cypresswood Drive and Fairfield Place Drive with 240 units in the project including one, two and three bedroom units.

• To the west of Fairfield Place Drive in the corner of US290 and the Grand Parkway, the 78 acre tract will include a large Second Baptist Church and school with grades from K to 12th grade. Site work on this project has begun. This is an exciting time for Fairfield. With a junior high school

and three elementary schools in the community, families benefit from our highly rated schools. With the continuation of the Grand Parkway from Katy to US290 around to I45 and US59, this community has excellent access to many job markets. The reconstruction of US290 from Fairfield to downtown Houston will provide much improved access to other business opportunities. With churches, schools and shopping in our community, we do not

have to leave the area except for other work opportunities. Take a look at the amenities in Fairfield at the following

website: http://visitfairfield.com/community. Fairfield IS the focal point of Northwest Houston.

As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks to our progress, nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. As we marked our 100th birthday in 2013, we’re determined to finish the fight against cancer. We’re finding cures as the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.

FUN FAIR POSITIVE SOCCER

In 1986, a group of parents in Katy felt there had to be a better way to provide every youth soccer player a positive experience. They saw the main problem as parents who put too much pressure on the kids to perform. They developed a system so the kids could play and enjoy the sport without demands from adults. They modified the rules and designed a process of 5-aside rules, equal play with a unique equal substitution system, balanced teams, and parent training to ensure that it would be fair. It would be truly “Made for Kids”.

Thus Fun-Fair-Positive Soccer (FFPS) was founded in the spring of 1986, by Jack Hendrie and several parents, to establish a positive environment for youth soccer players. The first season of the Katy youth soccer league registered 150 players. In 1995, Jack decided to expand beyond Katy. FFPS has added 21 additional programs in the last 24 years totaling over 16,000 players, with 25,000 players expected by 2016. FFPS is sure to have a youth soccer community near you. Just enter your zip code on the website at www.FFPS.org and find it on the map.

Middle School & High School Registration for Track Team

The Northwest Flyers Track Club will host two orientation/registration sessions for all middle and high school athletes and their parents interested in joining for the 2015 season. The events will be held on Saturday, March 28th at 11:00 a.m., and Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m., at Valley Ranch Grill & Barbeque, 22548 S.H. 249 @ Spring Cypress, Houston. The Northwest Flyers is a youth (ages 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field. The club provides a full program of "track" events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays, and "field" events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. It is an excellent "off-season" program for young athletes who currently compete on their middle school or high school track teams. The club was founded 28 years ago by local Olympic gold medalist Fred Newhouse to foster the development of youth track & field in the northwest Houston area. Last year, the Northwest Flyers sent 87 young athletes to compete at U.S. Junior Olympics National Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Humble, Texas. Visit the team website at http://www.northwestflyers.org for registration forms and information prior to the session, or contact Linette Roach at (281) 587-8442, or [email protected].

FAIRFIELD SUBDIVISION’S SAFETY AWARENESS COMMITTEE IS PROMOTING THE FAIRFIELD BLOCK WATCH PROGRAM!

BECOME A BLOCK CAPTAIN FOR YOUR BLOCK! What is the Fairfield Block Watch Program? Block Watch is

a simple and convenient, proactive way for Fairfield residents to unite to keep the Fairfield community safe and informed, to get to know one another better, to look out for one another’s families and property, and to provide additional “eyes and ears” for our deputies. Block Watch is not about residents taking the law into their own hands, but about calling the Constables ASAP when we see or hear something suspicious. Block Watch is safe and effective!

Block Captains gather and keep current email addresses and phone numbers of the neighbors on their blocks. Block Captains and their neighbors communicate with one another with common sense tips to avoid being targeted by crime. Block Captains are also liaisons for their neighbors to Jana Kent, Block Watch Coordinator, who has direct access to Sgt. Rogers.

If you are a Fairfield resident and would like to join the Fairfield Block Watch Program by becoming a Block Captain, contact Jana Kent at [email protected]

Networking 11a.m.; Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m.Sterling Country Club,

16500 Houston National Blvd., Cypress, TX 77433Costs $25 with advanced reservations; $30 at the door

At the March 26 Cy-Fair Express Network Luncheon, speaker Lisa N. Alexander will reveal skills to help entrepreneurs and small business owners define their target audience. According to Alexander, you don’t want everyone as customers and cautions that thinking everybody and anybody are potential customers is a mistake. This type of thinking will always result in lost time and revenue. Her  interactive  program shares real world examples of what happens when you try to service everyone. Participants will walk away with knowledge on how to build an audience profile, where to find information regarding their audience and how to start creating messages for that audience.

Known as The Marketing Stylist™, Alexander has worked as an art director, graphic designer and marketing consultant throughout

her 20-year career. As a consultant, she helps small business owners grow their businesses through strategic marketing and planning.

Author of This Woman Knows, her personal story of coming into her own place of knowing and power, Alexander shares this message with women through public speaking opportunities and encourages them to become women who know. She also recently launched her third book, Put It Out There! 5 Steps to Kick Fear’s Butt and Move Your Dream Forward. This month’s CYFEN meeting begins with networking at 11a.m. followed with a prompt 11:30 a.m. start of the program. Luncheons are held at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd.

Sara was thrown over our fence at our boarding facility, so we have no history on her.  She is the sweetest Mini-Poodle you will ever meet!  She seems to be around 7-8 years old (12 lbs).  We got her spayed, up to date on shots, microchipped and she is heart worm negative.  She seems to be completely blind, as you can see from her pictures, her eyes are white.  She is the sweetest dog you will ever meet!!  She loves to sit in your lap, she loves to be held.  She gets around great for her vision being compromised.  When she bumps into something she just wags her tail.  She is so gentle.  Call or email us to meet her.
