OUR OCTOBER BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Wednesday, October 21 will be a trip to Huntsville, Texas.How many times have you driven by the Sam Houston Statue on I-45 and

said to yourself, “Someday when I have more time, I’ll stop and take a closer look.”? Well, someday has arrived! Our October Senior bus is taking us to the Town of Huntsville, Texas, where we will spend the first part of our day tracing the steps of Sam Houston’s life and tour the town he chose to call home.

After a refreshing meal at a local Favorite, “The Farmhouse Café” with great home cookin’ and amazing desserts, our focus changes to the other reason that gives Huntsville notoriety; the Texas prison System.

We will then tour the Texas Prison Museum, which houses many artifacts including; confiscated weapons, inmates arts and crafts and the infamous electric chair “Old Sparky”. If our interest has been sparked – we can continue with a driving tour of the Texas Prison System, featuring 7 prison units located in the county, the old prison rodeo arena made famous in the movie “Urban Cowboy”. The driving tour can also include the notorious Huntsville Walls Unit, which dates back to 1849 and housed such notable as Clyde Barrow

and John Wesley Hardin. The trip cost includes several different Museum Fees as well as Step-on Tour Guide Fee.

The cost of this trip is only $10.00, plus the cost of your meal at The Farmhouse Café. The restaurant allows individual payments with cash or credit card. Payments for the trip need to be paid by October 7th.

OUR AUGUST ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, September 10: Our monthly pot luck It’s at the Lakeside Trails Club House and starts at 6:30 p.m. However,

plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. Then plan on staying and join many of our members that stay to play games or socializing after the meal and to finish up the desserts.

Tuesday, September 15: Game Night at the Cooks’ House.It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a snack and a healthy appetite. This is

always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our September 13, weekly e-newsletter.

Thursday, September 24: Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club HouseIt starts around 6:30 p.m., and we have plenty of room at the club house.

We would like to see you there to enjoy an evening of games and fellowship with us. Just bring a little snack and plan on having lots of fun. There are some card games, some games that the members bring and, of course, dominoes.

CYPRESS-FAIRFIELDWeight Watchers is a behavior-based lifestyle intervention program

that focuses on healthy eating and increased activity. It has been proven that losing 5-10% of body weight will significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Clinical trials published in the scientific journal Lancet 2011 Oct 22;378(9801):1485-92 show that 40-50% of members lose 5% of their weight by the 6 month mark.

Each Tuesday evening Weight Watchers members gather at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Cypress Texas. This group has been making an impact on improving their health and that of their family members since 2006. They set their own short and long term goals and are writing their own health Success Stories. The Weight Watchers approach encourages them to focus on additional things goals that go beyond weight lost.

The crisp fall weather is not quite here, but plans are already being made to create family-fun activities at Good Shepherd UMC. On September 13th from 5-7pm, we will be offering a fun Game Night for Adults, complete with lawn games like washers, horseshoes, and giant Jenga, as well as card games, Dominoes and Pokeno – fun for adults of all ages! Plus, we’ll have a Food Truck on hand with an amazing menu you don’t want to miss! Beginning in early October, keep a lookout for the much-awaited arrival of the pumpkins! Staged with harvest props and sunshine, the pumpkin patch provides a perfect background for your fall photos! The pumpkin patch is open daily, through dusk and offers an assortment of big, bright and beautiful pumpkins for sale. The Girlfriends Gift Market will return on Saturday, October 10th, 9am-4pm, and will include over 60 indoor/outdoor vendors featuring jewelry, yard art, hand-crafted goods, home décor, gourmet foods, boutique clothing &

more! The silent auction, bake sale and our kid vendors will create a festive backdrop for early holiday shopping. All proceeds will benefit local missions including Redeemed Ministries, Care Net Pregnancy Center and Boys and Girls Country. Watch for our youth who will begin collecting goods for the Homeless during November, and will be camping out for their Annual Camp for Christ on Dec. 5th, bringing awareness and much-needed donated goods to the Life Center for the Homeless. Kids’ Running Team’s Cross Country Season Starts

September 8thThe Northwest Flyers Track Club Youth Cross-Country

Team kicks off the fall season with registration and a mandatory orientation for parents and athletes on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. at Cypress Creek High School, 9815 Grant Rd., Houston. Registration starts online September 1 at www.northwestflyers.org. Practices are held at the Cypress Creek YMCA and Spring Creek Park in Tomball.

The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a member program of USA Track and Field (USATF), the national governing body for track and cross country. The club is in its 28th year in the northwest Houston area. Ages 6 - 18 may participate in the team, and both beginners and experienced runners are welcome. Middle school and high school cross country athletes can also register, but should compete after their cross country season is over.

TENNIS TIPS

With this issue, I will be offering tips on the fundamentals of the game of tennis. Kristen Somerholter, a Member of the Grey Rock Tennis Club shows the proper form and technique for the forehand groundstroke:

Step 1: Early Anticipation: The upper body turns with the right wrist slightly “cocked” back and level with the hip. Notice the eyes focused toward the incoming ball and the balance of the left hand in front of the body.

Step 2: Point of contact: Once the racquet starts accelerating, the right wrist is still slightly “cocked” back, but will have a small snap when making contact with the ball. Optimum point of contact is in front of the opposite foot. Notice that the eyes are still focused on the tennis ball and her weight has transferred to her left foot.

Step 3: Follow Through: Once the ball has made contact with racket, the arm needs to follow through for a long period of time to allow maximum compaction of the ball and help from the strings and the frame. Notice that the body has slightly turned watching where the ball is landing. The knee has flexed to allow more flexibility and power for the ball.

Step 4: Finish: If the racket has great momentum, let it continue following through the body and finishing it around the neck. This will allow for a more powerful impact and depth on the ball. The smile on her face shows that she hit a great shot!!

Many communities are ripe targets for solicitors – for a variety of reasons. While the Association has no real control over soliciting activities, we have tried to discourage solicitors from marketing in our community by placing “no soliciting” signs in common areas. The reason that we cannot prevent soliciting is that the streets and roadways within the community are public access ways owned and maintained by the county. This means that no person or persons may be prevented from entering the community. Of course, if an individual or individuals are in the process of breaking the law, the Sheriff or other law enforcement officer can take immediate action. Your Association recommends the following actions that every owner can take to discourage unwelcome soliciting in the community:• Report all suspicious persons to the Sheriff’s Department

and request the deputies on duty be made aware of your concerns.

• Promptly remove all flyers left on your front or garage door.

• Promptly report to the Post Office all flyers left on the mailboxes.

• Refuse to make use of solicitors’ offers and refuse to patronize any company being marketed in this manner.

• Notify the managing agent of any companies presently soliciting so that letters can be sent advising them of this policy of not permitting door to door soliciting (they will be reminded of the community newsletter and/or the Green Sheet as marketing options).

• Individual homeowners have the ability to place a small “No Trespassing/No Soliciting” sign at the entry to their homes. Should a solicitor continue to leave flyers, the homeowner then has the authority to file charges against the Solicitor/Company for trespassing on private property.

Benefitting the Adam J. Skinner Memorial Scholarship FundThe Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce invites the community

to its 17th annual FORE Cy-Fair Golf Tournament at Blackhorse Golf Club on Tuesday, September 29.

The tournament benefits the Adam J. Skinner Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. A scholarship has been established in his memory and the Chamber has contributed more than $94,000 to date to the endowment.

Player registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. A putting contest and the opening of the driving range will follow at 10:00 a.m. Shotgun start will be at 11:00 a.m. with the awards, dinner and raffle at 4:00 p.m.

“This tournament continues to grow each year and provides a great networking opportunity for businesses in the Cy-Fair community,” Leslie Martone, President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce said. “This event brings those who do business in this community together to raise funds and awareness for a great cause.”

The tournament is underwritten for the fifth consecutive year by Texas Emergency Care Center of Cypress. Returning for its second year as the CFISD sponsor, which includes the opportunity to play with the CFISD Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, is Bay-IBI Architects.

The True Texan sponsorship is still available and offers the opportunity to play with Larry Dierker and Bill Brown. This $5,000 sponsorship will receive two team entries, four hole sponsorships, a tournament

trophy, hospitality tent at hole of choice and logo recognition in all promotional material.
