GENERAL INFORMATION

The administration retains the right to issue penalties for acts that cause interruption of the educational process not specifically stated herein.

CLOSING BECAUSE OF STORMSSchool closings or delays will be announced on Radio, TV, Channel 39 on Armstrong Cable, on the Fairland Local School District website (www.fairland.k12.oh.us), or through the automatic phone notification system before 7:00 a.m. in most cases.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONSSchool Board-Related Fees – This includes textbook replacements, library fines, laboratory fees, etc. Students who owe fees of any kind will be prohibited from participating in graduation.

Obligations to Clubs and Organizations – At times students become indebted to clubs or organizations with the school for fund-raising activities. Students who fail to satisfy the above requirements will not be permitted to participate in extra-curricular activities.

GUIDANCE PROGRAM AND SERVICESThe Guidance Office is open from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You are encouraged to make an appointment and get a hall pass when you need to talk with Mrs. Marshall. In the morning before homeroom period is a good time to do this. You will be given a guidance appointment slip, which will be used as a hall pass to and from the Guidance Office. Check with counselor for other student services.

LOCKERSEach student will be assigned a hall locker. No sharing of lockers is permitted. Lockers are the property of Fairland Local Schools and as such, Fairland Local Schools retains the right to make random checks of any and all lockers. All lockers may be checked periodically. Students are required to keep their locker in like new condition with no stickers, writing, etc. in or on them. “Rigging” lockers to not lock is a form of vandalism and is treated as such.

NON-DISCRIMINATIONIt is the policy of this institution that there shall be no discrimination against any individual at Fairland High School because of age, color, creed, handicap, national origin, race, religion, or sex.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ELIGIBILITY RULESFairland High School has adopted and will abide by the constitution and bylaws of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. In addition, for a Fairland High School student to be eligible for any extra-curricular activity for the first and subsequent nine weeks of the 2016-17 school year, he/she must have a 1.700 or better grade point average, no more than one “F,” and be passing five credits/units for the immediate preceding nine weeks grading period. If a student is deemed ineligible, the student may not participate in an extra-curricular in any capacity (this includes any and all summer activities).

Extra-curricular means any activity in which the student is participating for which he/she does not receive credit.

The eligibility period will begin and end with the issuance of report cards.

NINE-WEEK PERIODS & REPORT CARDS

SUMMER SCHOOLSummer school will be available for students who have failed a course during the school year. There is a fee required and all lessons must be completed prior to the end of the summer school session to receive credit.

ATTENDANCE

ATTENDANCEIt is important that students attend school each day they are not ill. The Compulsory Attendance Law (O.R.C. 3321) requires that all students be in attendance, and in all classes assigned to them. Attendance is the responsibility of the student and the parent.

The administration reserves the right to ask for a doctor’s written excuse for any absence due to personal illness. Students with chronic illness or problems must have a doctor’s note on file each year.

Students will be allowed seven (7) absences for the school year, unless that student is suspended or truant from school. Medical excuses may not be factored in the seven days excused absences.

On the third (3) absence from school, parents will be notified by mail that each absence after the seventh (7) day will be unexcused unless each and every absence is accompanied by a doctor’s excuse. All medical excuses must be turned in to the office within three (3) days of returning to school. This is the student’s responsibility!

Charges will be filed when absences have reached: 5 consecutive days of unexcused absence, 7 days of unexcused absence in a 30 day period and/or 12 days of unexcused absence in a year (18-year-olds will not be allowed to do make-up work for all subsequent absences).

ATTENDANCE (CONT.)The administration may grant exemptions to the seven-(7) day limit for unusual circumstances. Exemptions may not include vacation, business or church trips, going out of town, etc. Suspensions are unexcused absences.

The number of absences & unexcused days will be four for semester classes.

Multiple unexcused absences may result in revocation of parking privileges and/or the driver’s license pursuant to Ohio Revised Code.

Parents must notify the school by telephone the same day, each time a student is absent. If a phone is unavailable, notes will be accepted from the parent/guardian upon the student’s return to school. If the school has not been notified by 8:00 a.m. of the absence, the parent will be notified by phone, when possible.

The Fairland Local School District does not condone unauthorized absences.

Students reporting after or leaving before 11:15 a.m. will be counted absent one half (1/2) day.

TARDIES TO SCHOOLStudents will be allowed seven (7) tardies for the school year. After the seventh tardy to school, all tardies will be considered unexcused unless the tardy meets state guidelines for being excused. State approved excused tardies may not be factored in the seven (7) allowable tardies.

The following consequences will be administered for being tardy to school: All unexcused tardy slips will also be counted as unexcused absences for truancy purposes.

If you arrive late to school because of sickness or a medical appointment, you must have your absence excused that day to avoid receiving an unexcused tardy slip.

Tardy slips will be counted by the classroom teacher. Three tardy slips per class period will result in three days detention hall.

EARLY DISMISSALRequests for early dismissals should be in writing from the parent and brought to the office prior to first period on the day needed. This note should include the reason for the early dismissal, who will be picking the student up, and a phone number of who can be contacted to verify the note if needed.

With the exception of medical appointments, please do not ask to have your child dismissed from school during the school day or ask to pick them up in the afternoon before the final dismissal bell of the day. Fairland High School is a closed campus. (Students may not be dismissed for lunch.)

No student will be excused without the approval of a parent and the office. All students must sign out in the office prior to leaving the school building. No student will be allowed to transport another student without the permission from each of the parents. You may not leave school and return after 3:00 p.m. without permission. For violation of these rules, three days detention will be imposed.

Students will be allowed seven (7) early dismissals for the school year. After the seventh early dismissal from school, all dismissals will be considered unexcused unless the dismissal meets state guidelines for being excused. Students that leave or transport other students, via car, without permission will have their driving privileges suspended for 10 days the first time, and for the remainder of the school year the second time. Students without a driver’s license will receive three days detention.

Students eighteen (18) years of age or older and living at home are still under their parent’s authority as far as the school is concerned. Eighteen (18) year old students will not be permitted to sign themselves out of school and all grades and discipline information will be shared with their parents.

SKIPPING SCHOOL OR CLASSESFor skipping school all day, the penalty will be nine days in detention hall. For skipping classes during the day the penalty will be two days in detention hall for the first class period skipped and one day for all additional classes with a maximum of nine days for truancy, plus any other rule infractions.

MAKE-UP WORKAny student will have the opportunity to make up any work missed for the day or days missed unless the absence(s) was unexcused. For the purpose of make-up work only, suspensions will not be counted as unexcused.

Only Seniors will be allowed college visits (2 days). All college visits must be approved through the counselor’s office at least two school days in advance of the visit. Students are required to show signed documentation of attendance from the university/college. Failure to follow these procedures will result in the college visit being counted as an unexcused absence.

Students will have the same number of days as his/her absence(s) to make up the work missed. Any work, assignments, or tests assigned prior to the absence(s) will be due upon the student returning to school, unless new material was presented during the absence. All students have the responsibility of checking with the teacher upon the day of their return to determine what they must make up.

REWARDS FOR GOOD ATTENDANCE1. Perfect attendance reward for full year of perfect attendance.2. Reward for four years perfect attendance.

DISCIPLINE

MISCONDUCT CARDSFor multiple misconduct cards, students may be assigned to the Lawrence County Alternative School or suspended for a period of up to 10 days.

DETENTION HALL/INTERVENTION7:00–7:50 a.m. Intervention 50 minutes3:04–3:54 p.m. Detention 50 minutes

1. Students reporting after the tardy bell will not be admitted and will be unexcused from detention and/or intervention.

2. Students will be assigned to intervention if they have any work not completed for a class. Students will have a maximum of 5 days to complete missing assignments. Students will be assigned detention for failure to complete assignments when assigned to intervention.

3. When a student receives detention, the student will be given a one-day notice as to the reason, time involved and transportation requirements.

4. Students required to stay for detention will not be able to take part in sports, athletic practice, band practice, clubs, work, or any other activity while his/her detention hall is in session.

5. Students need to arrange their own transportation.6. Students must have something to work on, read, or otherwise study. Sleeping,

talking and not working on schoolwork will result in an unexcused absence.

7. Students leaving school after 11:15 a.m. must bring a medical excuse the next day to be excused from detention for the previous day.

8. Students arriving late to school must have a medical excuse that day to be excused from morning intervention.

9. For the first unexcused absence of detention, two days will be added. For the second unexcused absence of detention, students will be assigned three days at the Lawrence County Alternative School (LCAS).

10. During the last two weeks of school, students will be required to attend both morning intervention and after-school detention if the balance of days in one exceeds the number of days remaining in school. For the second unexcused absence, on the same offense for these students, a 3-day suspension will be imposed.

SUSPENSIONSuspension is a temporary exclusion from school and school-sponsored activities for serious and/or repeated rule infractions. The principal retains the right to suspend students when it is deemed appropriate. The length of suspension runs from 1 to 10 days depending on the nature of the infraction. Parents will be notified by mail. Multiple suspensions may result in a recommendation for expulsion, referral to Juvenile Court and/or the Sheriff’s department.

LAWRENCE COUNTY ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLStudents may be required to attend the Lawrence County Alternative School (LCAS) or be referred to Juvenile Court for violations of the student handbook. The following procedures will be in effect:

1. Students will ride the Fairland bus to the Collins Career Center where they will be met and transported to the LCAS.

2. Students must take homework assignments from FHS to the LCAS. If these are completed satisfactorily, a minimum of 50% will be given. Students will be counted present for all days attended.

3. Students attending the LCAS will be eligible to participate in all extra-curricular activities.

4. Students will be briefed on LCAS rules before attending and will be accountable for their actions while there.

5. Students will be suspended if permission is not given to attend LCAS and/or referred to Juvenile Court.

APPEAL PROCEDUREEach student has the right to appeal suspensions, provided they are accompanied by his/her parents or guardians, and shall be made in the following sequence:

SCHOOL RULESAll detention must be served as assigned.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITYStudents are expected to present only their work for any assignment, project, or assessment. Presenting another’s work as one’s own is considered cheating and/or plagiarism. This also includes the unauthorized use of data to gain an academic advantage. Students who violate this policy may receive zero credit and be referred to administration for further disciplinary action.

ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY (AUP) & EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARDS (EMC)Both your EMC and your AUP policy contract are issued the first day of school. Both of these must be signed and returned. Failure to do so may jeopardize you from being dismissed during the day unless your parent comes to pick you up. Not returning your AUP results in no usage of computers.

ACCEPTABLE USE POLICYThe Internet, connecting thousands of computer networks all over the world with millions of individual users, is available to all students of Fairland High School. The use of the Internet brings current information to our students. It provides access to our subscription online databases, government websites, and to websites of thousands of organizations and individuals.

All students will receive a copy of the AUP. Students and parents/guardians are required to sign an agreement requiring the students to abide by all regulations contained within the AUP. Please note all computers and district network folders are property of the FLSD and therefore are subject to search by the administration of the FLSD.

Violation of the AUP may result in detention, LCAS, suspension, or expulsion from the Fairland Local School District.

BACKPACKS, BOOK BAGS, LARGE TOTE BAGS, PURSESFor safety purposes, all backpacks, book bags, large tote bags, purses, etc. must be stored in a locker upon arrival at school and remain there until the student leaves school. Violation of this rule may result in up to five days detention. Purses are permitted in the café area during lunch periods only.

BUS RULES AND PROCEDURESThe following regulations should be adhered to at all times by students. Administration and drivers reserve the right to add to these rules for the safety of all students on the bus. Students are expected to promptly obey the instructions of the bus driver at all times. Situations not specifically covered by these rules will be addressed at the discretion of the administration.

1. Students must remain seated at all times.2. Excessive noise, boisterous conduct, calling to others outside the bus, and

talking at intersections and railroad crossings is prohibited.3. Students must keep all body parts inside the bus at all times.4. Food and drinks are prohibited on the bus.5. The use of profane, vulgar, or improper language and/or gestures is prohibited.6. Throwing of any objects in the bus, at the bus, or out the window is prohibited.7. Fighting (physical or verbal) is prohibited.

Any violation of these rules may result in the loss of riding privileges and/or other disciplinary action by the administration.

CAFETORIUMAll cafeteria food must be consumed in the dining hall. Trays, silverware, etc. must be taken to tray disposal window. The throwing of food will not be tolerated. Students may not possess/consume food purchased/ordered off premises. Violators will perform cafeteria/kitchen clean up duty for five lunch periods and up to 5 days detention. Non-completion of clean up duty may result in up to nine days detention and/or assignment to LCAS.

CLASSROOM DISRUPTIONS/DISRESPECT TO TEACHERAny student found to be disrupting the educational process of any classroom or disrespectful to a teacher may be assigned to detention hall for up to nine days. Repeated violations could result in placement at the LCAS or an out of school suspension.

COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS STUDENTS1. Students must report to study hall or leave school property, at the discretion of

administration, when they are not scheduled for a high school class. They may not “hang around.”

2. Students scheduled for high school classes 5th and 6th periods may not leave school grounds for lunch.

3. Students who are permitted to leave for lunch may not return to the high school during the lunch break.

Violation of any of these rules will result in two days detention.

DRESS AND GROOMING POLICYAlthough the primary responsibility for dress and appearance rules rests with the individual student and his/her parents, the privilege of public education carries with it a reasonable degree of conformity. Any dress or appearance that disrupts the educational process or poses a threat to the health, welfare, or safety of the individual or other students is prohibited. The objective of publishing dress standards is to insure that students are clean, neat, well groomed and dressed with a sense of propriety. Any extremes in dress or appearance are not acceptable.

1. Pajamas, flannel pants, pajama look-alikes, and/or slippers are not acceptable school clothes.

2. All students must wear some form of footwear.3. Hats in any form (bandanas, etc.) and sunglasses may not be worn in the

building.4. Under garments may not be visible at any time.5. Upper Garments – Shirts advertising drugs of any kind, double entendre pictures

or slogans, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, weapons, those with obscene, profane or sexually suggestive printing on them will not be permitted. Transparent garments, bare midriff when standing or seated, bareback clothing or undergarments worn as outerwear (boxer shorts, etc.) may not be worn. Sleeveless tops must have shoulder straps at least 3 fingers in width. Shirts may not be open any lower than a line from armpit to armpit.

6. Lower Garments – All shorts and skirts must be at least mid-thigh length (fingertips). All pants, shorts, and skirts may not have any rips, tears, or holes above mid-thigh length (fingertips). The top of shorts and pants may not be rolled at the waist for any reason. Stretch shorts (yoga, spandex, exercise, etc.) are not permitted as outerwear.

7. Students may not wear chains or spikes on pocketbooks, billfolds, clothing, jewelry, etc., including gauges.

8. Heavy coats, jackets and gloves must be stored in one’s locker upon arrival at school. Students may wear light jackets, windbreakers or sweaters to class.

9. The administration is given the authority to regulate any mode of dress not mentioned above, that they may deem unsafe or detrimental to the educational process.

Students who violate the dress code will be sent to the office. Attempts to secure appropriate clothing from home will be made. First offense of the dress code will result in a warning. Subsequent offenses may result in detention of up to four days or a placement at the LCAS.

DRIVING/PARKING REGULATIONSDuring the first two weeks of school students will secure a parking permit. The registration fee is $10.00 per year. After the first two weeks of school, any student whose vehicle on school grounds does not have a visible sticker will be subject to detention. Cars parked illegally on school grounds are subject to be towed at the owner’s expense. A duplicate sticker will cost $5.00. Proof of insurance is needed and must be on file at FHS.

DRIVING/PARKING REGULATIONS (CONT.)Any student caught driving recklessly on Fairland Local School District property before, during, or after school hours will receive:

1. First Violation – Ten days driving suspension2. Second Violation – Driving privileges suspended for up to the remainder of year3. For driving on school grounds while either of the above penalties is in effect, a

student will be suspended from school for three days for each offense.4. Students are not to loiter in their car or in the parking area, sit in their vehicles or

visit their car during school hours. Violation of the above will result in one day detention.

5. Students may not ride outside of the manufacturer’s seated area in all vehicles (no riding in the back of trucks or the outside of any vehicle). Drivers of said vehicles are also in violation of this rule. Penalty – three days detention.

NOTE: Driving on school grounds means that a student is prohibited from having his vehicle on school grounds at any time, moving, parked or otherwise.

DRUGS AND ALCOHOLThe Fairland School District has a Comprehensive Drug Policy that cannot be printed in its full text in this handbook. It was developed with an interest in attempting to help a student with a drug/alcohol problem. Before issuing necessary discipline, there should be no doubt that the Fairland District takes a strong stand in attempting to maintain a drug-/alcohol-free educational environment. Following is a summary of the policy. You are encouraged to request a complete copy by calling Fairland High School.

It is strictly prohibited for a student to possess, buy, sell, use, transmit, or apply any unauthorized mood-altering chemical (INCLUDES ALCOHOL AND ANY UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE REPRESENTED AS A DRUG OR NARCOTIC). Students are also strictly prohibited from possessing any unauthorized drug paraphernalia. This rule is in effect during school and any school-sponsored activity/event/program, whether on a school bus or otherwise.

If a student is deemed in possession, under the influence, or displays evidence of consumption of drugs/alcohol, or has paraphernalia, as outlined in Section I of the policy, the student will be removed from school immediately.

FOR THE FIRST OFFENSE: TEN-DAY SUSPENSION for alcohol related problems & possible prosecution. Upon returning to school, the student must also sign a NO USE CONTRACT.

(Law enforcement officials may be involved in any offense and attempts will be made to contact parents in the event of any offense.)

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTPersonal radios, recording devices of any kind, headphones, iPods, personal computers, personal CD players, digital media players, all battery powered electronic equipment and similar items are not allowed. Cellular phones and iPhone type watches are not allowed in any classroom, hallway or any other room from 7:50 am until students are dismissed. Any device which makes a noise or vibrates or otherwise attracts attention will be deemed to be creating a disruption. Any device found in violation will be confiscated and turned into the appropriate administrator.

First offense – 3 days detention hall. The item will be returned to the student at the end of the day.

Second offense – 5 days detention hall. The item will be returned to the student at the end of the day.

Third offense – 10 days detention hall. The phone will be returned to the parent.

Fourth and subsequent offenses – Placement at the alternative school. The phone will be returned to the parent.

FALSE REPORTS/INFORMATIONStudents who provide false or misleading reports or information may be subject to detention, LCAS, suspension, or expulsion.

FIREWORKS AND FIRE ALARMSSetting off false fire alarms and/or fireworks (or possession of fireworks) will result in a suspension of up to ten days. Law enforcement officials may be involved in this offense, as needed.

FOOD & DRINK / LUNCH TIMEDrinks may be purchased before school, at noon, and after school. All food, drinks, and snacks will be limited to the dining hall and posted limits area only. OFF LIMIT areas – stage, band room, stairs, classrooms, past the green double doors, behind building. NO drinks, snacks or food past the green double doors, upstairs, in the hallways or in the gym.

Energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster, Rock Star, AMP, etc.) of any kind are not permitted at school.

Students may not charge extras at lunch.

Violation of these rules will result in up to two days detention.

Fairland High School has a closed lunch. Students are not permitted to leave.

FORGERYStudents caught forging a note, i.e. hall pass, excuse, etc. – five days detention and possible referral to law enforcement officials.

GYMNASIUMAt NO time is food or soft drinks allowed in the gymnasium. This includes the upper gym area. Violation of this rule will result in two days detention.

The gymnasium is only open for supervised activities (P.E. classes, athletic practices, and other activities as approved by the administration).

HALL PASSESIn order to be in the hall while classes are in session, a student must have a hall pass, agenda book or a library pass/guidance pass if appropriate. The hall pass, agenda book and library pass/guidance pass must be signed by a teacher for that trip. For violation of this rule, the penalty is two days detention.

HARASSMENT/BULLYINGHarassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, religion, handicap, age or sex is prohibited. For this purpose such harassment is defined as including slurs, or other verbal or physical conduct, relating to an individual’s race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, religion, age, handicap, sex or when such conduct has the purpose or effect of:

1. Creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment or;2. Otherwise actions (cyber-bullying/abusive behavior) that adversely impact a student’s educational opportunities.

It is the policy of the Fairland Local School District to maintain learning and working environment that is free from harassment and sexual harassment. A sexual harassment policy and bullying policy has been adopted which protects the rights of students and employees. Copies of these policies are available upon request from the office.

The anti-bullying policy adopted by the Fairland Board of Education can be found on the District’s web page and posted within each classroom.

HB 19 requires the inclusion of dating violence in school anti-harassment policies. (R.C. 3313.666)

The bill requires each school district to incorporate dating violence into its existing policy prohibiting student harassment, intimidation, or bullying. For this purpose, the bill explicitly includes dating violence as a form of harassment, intimidation, or bullying that must be covered by the policy. It defines dating violence as a pattern of behavior where a person uses or threatens physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional abuse to control the person’s dating partner. A dating partner is any person, regardless of gender, involved in an intimate relationship with another [person] primarily characterized by the expectation of affectionate involvement whether casual, serious, or long term.

First offense for harassment of fellow students may result in detention, assignment to the LCAS, suspension, or expulsion. Parents will be contacted. Subsequent offenses will result in up to ten days out-of-school suspension, referral to Juvenile Court and/or recommendation for expulsion.

HAZINGNo student, including leaders of student organizations, shall plan, encourage, or engage in any hazing.

Hazing is defined in Ohio Revised Code 2903.31 as follows: As used in this section, “hazing” means doing any act or coercing another, including the victim, to do any act of initiation into any student or other organization that causes or creates a substantial risk of causing mental or physical harm to any person. Permission, consent, or assumption of risk by any individual subjected to hazing does not lessen the prohibition contained in this policy.

The Ohio Revised Code does not require physical or mental harm, but only the substantial risk of mental or physical harm. Therefore, any fear or embarrassment caused by an act of hazing would be actionable. Hazing can also be considered a form of harassment and thus carry the consequences listed in the harassment/bullying section of the student handbook.

Students who fail to abide by this policy may be subject to an out of school suspension. The length of the suspension will be determined by the Principal. In addition, the student may be liable for civil and criminal penalties in accordance with Ohio law.

Any senior who is involved in hazing activities his/her last week of school will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies.

INSUBORDINATIONStudents that fail to obey a direct request of a teacher will be given up to nine days detention. Leaving a class without permission is insubordination.

LIBRARY & COMPUTER RULESWhile in Library the following rules apply:

1. No food, candy, drinks.2. Must have library pass during class time.3. Come in quietly; leave quietly, with no excessive talking while in library.4. Use main door only.5. Treat the library with respect (books, computers, chairs, tables, etc.).6. Follow the computer/Internet acceptable use policy.

LOITERINGUnder any stairs or loitering in stair hallways is not allowed. Sitting in hallways is not permitted. Detention may be assigned for these offenses.

MATERIAL DISTRIBUTIONAny material that is to be circulated in the Fairland Local School District by any group or individual either from within or outside the school must first be presented to the administration and receive their approval for distribution. It must be clearly indicated on the material as to who is responsible for the publication and its contents. The school will use its disciplinary code of conduct for violation of this policy by in-school groups or individuals.

PROFANITYProfanity either by verbal, written, or physical means will not be tolerated. The penalty will be up to five days in detention hall. Profanity directed toward any employee of the Fairland Local School District will result in a ten-day out-of-school suspension.

REPORTING TO OFFICEStudents that fail to report to the office or misrepresent the purpose of reporting to the office will be given up to five days in detention hall.

SHOW OF AFFECTIONKissing, hugging, holding of hands, etc. is not permitted. Violation of the above will result in two days in detention hall.

SKATEBOARDS, ETC.Skateboards, roller blades, hover boards, wheeled shoes and scooters are not allowed on school property. Five days detention for violation of this rule.

TELEPHONE – PAY PHONEThe pay phone may only be used before school, lunchtime, or after school. Use of this phone any other time will result in two days detention. Please limit the length of your call; others may need to use the phone. The school assumes no liability for lost money.

TELEPHONE – SCHOOLStudents may only use the school phone in the lobby of the main office. Students must have permission from office personnel to use the office phone. Students are not permitted to use classroom phones. Failure to follow this rule will result in five days detention.

THEFTThose found responsible for theft will be suspended for a period of up to ten days and possible referral to law enforcement officials. Students must make restitution if stolen articles are not returned.

THREATSThreats of any kind directed toward fellow students may result in up to ten days suspension.

Threats of any kind directed toward employees or authorized school visitors of this school district (in or out of school) will result in a ten-day out-of-school suspension.

Any student making threats may also be referred to law enforcement officials.

TOBACCOPossession or the use of tobacco, lighters, matches, rolling papers, E-cigs, vapor pens, or any paraphernalia related to these objects, etc., is not permitted on Fairland High School property. For violation of the above rule, a student will be given five days detention. Second offense – nine days detention. Third and subsequent offenses – three day suspension and Juvenile Court referral.

VANDALISMStudents defacing the building, grounds, equipment, or willfully destroying school property and personal property of school district employees in any way will result in detention or suspension and make restitution if there is a loss of or damage to property. Vandalism of student property by students will result in detention/suspension and restitution of damages.

DANGEROUS WEAPONS & INSTRUMENTS POLICYAll students, when under the authority of school personnel during a school activity, function, or event whether on property owned, rented, or maintained by the Fairland Board of Education or property owned, rented or maintained by another party, shall not possess, handle, transmit, or conceal any object which might be considered a dangerous weapon or instrument of violence or a look-alike or counterfeit weapon. Students violating the above may be suspended for up to 10 days and possibly be referred to the superintendent for expulsion.

O.R.C. 2923.126 prohibits concealed weapons in a school safety zone.

FIGHTING POLICYStudents shall not engage in physical contact for the express purpose of inflicting harm on another person. Words can constitute an infraction of this rule. No student shall provoke another.

Students fighting during the school day will be sent home for the remainder of the school day and possibly suspended for up to ten days.

Penalty for violating the above during the school day or at any school related activity will not exceed a ten day suspension for the first offense; for the second offense – ten days out-of-school suspension, referral to Juvenile court and/or the Sheriff’s department.

OTHER INFORMATIONCAMERAS – Surveillance cameras are placed throughout the building, both inside and outside.

ELEVATOR USE is by permission of staff only.

VISITOR’S PROCEDURES – All visitors must first report to the main office.

The administration retains the right to issue penalties for acts that cause interruption of the educational process not specifically stated herein.

The handbook rules continue in effect at all times while on or in any Fairland Local School District (FLSD) property and for all school-related activities and events.
