Dear Sisters In Christ,

What is Evangelism? Well, we all have visions of it being the street corner Bible thumper telling us the glories and the doom of our days here on Earth. I have come to believe that through God's grace, true evangelism is being the face of Christ to those in

the world and not just to tell them where to find the Bread of Life, but lead them to where they can see it. If we can truly listen to others and be silent in their presence, we can learn what it is they need to hear from us. We need to share the good news of our Lord, our Sovereign King, only when we

I hope that all of you have had a great summer and look forward to the beauty that only fall can bring. I love to watch the news, but sometimes it seems as though the world is about to come to an end because the news sometimes can be very troublesome. When that happens to me I put the news aside for a few minutes and think about all that I have in my life that represents thankfulness.

Just because we come together and celebrate the love that

Chaplains’ Corner: Thankfulness Charles Mercer

Jesus has for us is something to be thankful for. The fact that we meet several times a year as a body to move forward and to rekindle our relationships, well that makes me thankful. When I celebrate the liturgy and we receive the meal that Jesus left for us, for that I am very thankful. But just as important when I think of all I have experienced over the years, my failures, my victories, the people who have died and the new lives who have come to my family, for all of that and a lot more I am very thankful. But most of all,

every day that I get to share , to serve, to laugh and to cry and to see the face of God in all of my brothers and sisters, for that I am most thankful.

So, my sisters in Christ, as we gather for the fall assembly, may our hearts and our l ives be full of the love and the spirit that Jesus has left for us, but more than that let us all be thankful and grateful for the moments that we have to share with each other.

May God Bless Us All,

Charles+

Dear Daughters,

I am so pleased and excited to begin my tenure as Vice-President for such a wonderful Order! I continue to remain open and attentive to God’s direction and guidance as I serve in this important position. Whatever trepidation or hesitation I may have is calmed knowing that I am working with wonderful, caring women dedicated to a life of prayer, service and evangelism. So today I can truly say I am thankful to serve the Maryland Order of Daughters of the King.

I began my journey as a Daughter at St. Bartholomew’s Margaret Rollo Chapter and served with a group of active, dedicated women – Patty Young, Inez Haynie-Dodson, Glorious Sullivan and others. Currently I am a member of the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin Chapter and we are

excited to reactivate our Chapter with two new members for a total of eight dedicated women excited to serve our parish. We are looking forward to our Fall Assembly.

I hope that you will join us at our Fall Assembly on November 3. Our theme “Thankfulness” is one which will guide us in our service to others, our prayer life and in our evangelism. To be thankful in all things, at all times, is challenging and I believe we can support each other as well as others throughout the Diocese to focus on an attitude of gratitude and thankfulness in all seasons.

I look forward to meeting you at the Fall Assembly.

FHS,

Karen

JUNIOR DAUGHTERS PRAYER:

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with Thy most gracious favor, and further us with Thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in Thee, we may glorify Thy holy Name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HELP US TO PRAY:

Almighty God, help us to pray so faithfully that we may draw near to you and

learn your will. Help us to serve so joyfully that others may be drawn to you.

May your Holy Spirit guide us each day, that all we think, do, or say may be

acceptable to you. We ask all for the sake of Him whose cross we wear, our

Savior, Jesus Christ. AMEN.

MOTTO OF THE ORDER:

For His sake … I am but one; but I am one. I cannot do everything; but I can do something. What I can do; I ought to do. What I ought to do; by the grace of God I will do. Lord, what will you have me do?

Five Junior Daughters from the Genesis Junior Chapter at All Saints Frederick attended the 2012 Triennial in Indianapolis, IN. The girls really lived out the words of the Triennial theme “Looking To Jesus, Spreading His Love.” They took part in many Bible studies and activities, and met so many people from all over the world. They also participated in the Holy Eucharist Services and served as readers, greeters, acolytes, ushers, and banner carriers.

The Junior Daughters took part in an outreach and service project where they met with 76 children from a local mission, served them breakfast, played games, and then took the kids to the Indianapolis Zoo. It was a fantastic experience and the Diocese can be very proud of all of our Junior Daughters!

(Excerpts from Spring 2012 Royal Cross)

“Growing up I always wanted a sister. Since becoming a Daughter of the King, He has given me so many sisters I can’t

ever count them. I have dear sisters in my home chapter, in my Diocese, in Province IV. Not only that, I also have sweet

sisters in Africa, the Caribbean Basin, South America, Europe, India, and the Middle East! I am abundantly, exceedingly

blessed beyond measure. And so are you! The family connections we share are very strong because we are united as

sisters through prayer and service to our heavenly Father. What a gift! Have you, as a Daughter of the King, connected

with your sisters outside your chapter and your diocesan assembly? Have you met any of your sisters from other parts of

the world?”

Your chapter has a great opportunity to support international programs, here are some ideas:

-Become a Prayer Partner with an International Chapter -Donate international crosses for new members For more information, contact our International Chair, Marjorie Rogers, [email protected] OR Visit the National webpage in one month for a new International Daughter’s form to adopt a sister chapter to correspond with.

really hear and understand where their heart lies and what they need spoken to them from our hearts. Our Order has many strengths and Evangelism is one of our best kept secrets. We show the face of Christ to all and now is our time to seek the face of Christ in all whom we see. Speaking the Good News and living it in our daily lives will be our testament as we grow to serve others through our Order. It is my hope to build a team of Daughters who will help our Diocese develop a

program which will give each Daughter a true sense of Evangelism as she encounters God's family here on earth. . Please join us at Fall Assembly at the Cathedral so we can explore this exciting part of who we are.

May God' peace and love be with you all.

Jr & Sr Daughters, Take Note: Fall Assembly November 3

Please join us Saturday, November 3, at The Diocesan Center in Baltimore, as we celebrate a Fall Gathering of our devoted and faithful Daughters.

This is a season of Thankfulness, and in fact we have chosen that as our theme for the next three years as we build up to 2015. With that in mind, we will honor the service, prayer, and evangelism so beautifully exemplified in our very own Jen Mariano.

Jen has been a member of the Daughters of the King since June 14, 1998 and in that time has nurtured our Junior Daughters to the strong and growing order it is today. Jen has served admirably as Junior Directress for six years, and during the last Triennial was elected as Vice President of the National Council. With trusted assistance, she recently rewrote the Junior Daughters Handbook.

On behalf of the DOK, and she would like to emphasize with assistance from fellow Daughters, Jen also wrote a fascinating history entitled “Mary Davenport’s ‘Work Among Girls’” -- a must-read for anyone curious about the history and foundation of the Junior Daughters of the King. Even as we are searching for someone to continue to lead the JR DOK in Maryland, Jen remains committed to the cause.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jen for her commitment, and to have a great showing of support for her continued good works. Please join us, Juniors and Seniors alike, for the Fall Assembly next month. To register (no cost, yet refreshments & lunch are included!), please send in the last page of this newsletter.

If anyone would like to do a special presentation at the Assembly, there is still time to prepare for that … just let us know in advance and as soon as possible. Email Diocesan President Carole Novian at [email protected], or Secretary Elizabeth Grove at [email protected], or call Elizabeth at 410-664-0304 to discuss. We look forward to sharing this time, and this celebration, with you all!

The 2012 Fall Assembly of the Maryland Diocese of the Order of the Daughters of the King (whew!) will be held at the Diocesan Center, 4 E. University Parkway, Baltimore, MD 21218 (410-467-1399). There is plenty of free parking.

Registration begins at 9:30 AM with refreshments.

Fr. Charles Mercer, the Chaplain for our Diocese, will preside over Eucharist at 10:00 AM . Please try to arrive on time!

Following the service, we will feast together , and a buffet deli-style lunch will be provided. Your RSVP will help ensure that we have enough (and not too much) food for everyone.

After lunch, we will celebrate the ministry of Jen Mariano, her past service to the Junior Daughters of the King, and her current service on National Council.

We will also swear in our new Diocesan Officers, and review any business at hand. We look forward to your attendance and participation, and appreciate your early registration.
