USF senior Marcela Gurgel put together arguably her best week of the season to help the Bulls to two BIG EAST wins and earn the outside hitter her fi rst volleyball Player of the Week award this season. Gurgel, the 2009 BIG EAST Pre-season Player of the Year, led the USF offense in straight-sets victories over Georgetown and St. John’s. Against the Hoyas, the senior recorded 14 kills, eight digs and three blocks to go along with a .448 hitting percentage. Gur-gel set a season-high in three sets with 16 kills versus St. John’s and added an assist, two service aces, eight digs and four blocks. The Fortaleza, Brazil, native paced the conference in kills per set (5.33) and points per set (6.83) this week.

Cincinnati outside hitter Jordanne Scott was instrumental in a straight-sets win over Louisville and was honored with her second Freshman of the Week award. Scott did a little bit of everything for the Bearcats in a 3-0 victory against Louisville. The rookie had six kills, two digs and four blocks against the Cardinals. With the win, Cincinnati extended its home winning streak to 23 matches, tying the record for longest home winning streak in school history. Her 1.33 blocks-per-set average was good for fi fth in the league this week. Scott joins Syracuse’s Laura Homann as the only freshmen to be honored with two top rookie selections this year.
