Cross Country Ski OptionsBeginner - The Falls Creek Nordic Bowl is sheltered from the weather and provides the perfect place to learn, play and have fun. A large open space, almost flat at the base with sloping sides of different degrees, the Nordic Bowl is perfect for group activities, learning basic skills and games on snow. Once more confident, skiers can try out their new skills on the 1.5km Nordic Bowl loop or practice downhill skills on the Hoppet start area.

Intermediate - There are several loops of differing lengths the intermediate cross country skier may enjoy. Starting out from the Nordic Bowl the 2.5km Panorama loop has varied terrain, great views and provides access to several of the other longer tracks. These include the Watchbed Creek trail (8km return) and the Sun Valley 7km loop. When the weather comes in, the 2.5km pipeline track is sheltered between the trees. For those wanting a good workout, try the trip up the McKay road, past the Falls Creek alpine runs which opens up the 5km Mt McKay loop.

Advanced - With everything from tough 5km and 10km loops used for championship events to longer trails opening up onto the expanse of the Bogong High Plains, there is something for all advanced skiers. The challenging Rocky Valley Lake and Heathy Spur loops make up the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet course, while the more adventurous can venture out to spectacular peaks such as Spion Kopje and Mt Fainter. Normally options for people with heavier skis and metal edges, when conditions are right it is possible to skate out to these peaks and enjoy a different side to skiing at Falls Creek.

Cross Country Terrain Park - The Cross Country Terrain Park is located in the Hoppet Start area of the Nordic Bowl, with signs set out to identify the features. Subject to snow conditions, the basic rollers and berms for intermediate skiers will run down the north side of the Hoppet Start, with the advanced features dropping down from the High Plains Road to the end of the Horseyard Track. Come along and put your skills to the test.

Lessons & ToursFalls Creek is the ideal place to learn to cross country ski with the Nordic Bowl having large open spaces and almost flat terrain. With lessons starting from as little as $42, you will be heading around the trails in no time.

Cross country lessons and tours are provided by YMCA Windy Corner Cross Country Ski Centre located at the top of Falls Creek Alpine Village, Windy Corner. Packages are available for all types of skiers from beginner group lessons and tours to elite private coaching. For more information call 03 5758 3408 or email [email protected]

Ross Forrest is the head cross country snow groomer at Falls Creek, so

if it has snowed overnight you will most likely see Ross out early in the

morning packing the trails. If it is a clear day, then he will be out late

afternoon setting up the tracks for a good freeze overnight. Ross has

developed a reputation for his commitment and expertise in creating and

maintaining cross country trails.

Utilising state of the art technology ensures that Ross and the team at Falls Creek have the ability to increase trail maintenance and open up fun little trails that wind their way around Falls Creek.

If you notice any safety issues along the track make sure you let Ross or the team know. For general enquiries or input into grooming strategies please contact Falls Creek Resort Management by calling (03) 5758 1200.

SnowmobilesFrom time to time on the Falls Creek cross country trail system you will come across snowmobiles, including personnel from the SeS Search and Rescue, AGL Hydro, Falls Creek Police and Ski Patrol. On the upper trails near Mt. McKay there are also snowmobile tours that use and cross some sections of the cross country tracks.

There are strict snowmobile driving codes that apply when driving through the cross country trail systems which are in place to minimise any impact on the cross country trails. Please be courteous and remember that most snowmobiles you encounter are legitimately using the trails and are performing necessary duties. If you believe that there is unauthorised snowmobile use, please notify a ski patroller or the staff at Windy Corner.

At Falls Creek, mountains, clean air, and pristine alpine views are our business. The natural environment in which we operate is our greatest asset.

We are extremely proud of Falls Creek’s reputation as an industry leader in the field of sustainable alpine tourism and development. Our environmental programs reduce our impact on the local environment and acknowledge the importance of maintaining a healthy world beyond our boundary.

Falls Creek recently became a signatory to the Keep Winter Cool Charter which represents our commitment to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In March 2005 Falls Creek Resort Management also became the world’s first alpine-based organisation to be benchmarked by Green Globe - the international certification program for ecologically and socially sustainable tourism.

The Green Globe application process highlighted that Falls Creek Resort Management is not only meeting minimum requirements in relation to environmental performance but also often performing at or above best practice.

One of the best kept secrets is summer at Falls Creek. Situated 1600 meters above sea level on a stunning alpine plateau, Falls Creek boasts the highest significant body of water in Australia. Here you will find outstanding fly-fishing, kayaking and boating opportunities in Rocky Valley Lake and at Pretty Valley Lake.

Discover the perfect picnic area and camping spot or drive, hike or ride out to Mount McKay, the highest drivable mountain in Victoria at 1842 metres. You can rock climb up Strawberry Saddle Crag or book a sunset tour and enjoy a gourmet picnic and sparkling wine whilst soaking up the uninterrupted 360 degree views across the breathtaking Bogong High Plains. Pretty Valley Lake is only a short distance further and provides the perfect environment to relax amongst the Snowgums and alpine wildflowers.

Back in the 1950s during the development of the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme, 30kms of roads were built around Falls Creek to maintain the aqueducts. These roads are now wide paths that weave through the Alpine National Park from Falls Creek Village, offering excellent cross country bike riding, walking and high altitude training runs for all levels. Falls Creek has become a hot spot for athletes from around the world who seek all of the benefits that come from staying and training at high altitude.

With the sealing of the Bogong High Plains Road in 2009, Falls Creek offers unparalleled views whilst offering a smooth drive through the Alpine National Park and provides an opportunity to visit the historic Wallace and Cope Huts.

So whether you take the family on a relaxing drive, cruise through on your motorbike or cycle with friends, this road provides you with a unique and spectacular Australian alpine experience.

Falls Creek – Home of the Australian Cross Country Ski TeamFalls Creek is the heart of Australian cross country skiing and the home of the National Team. Earlier this year four members of the National Team competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver – esther Bottomley, Paul Murray and Ben Sim in the cross country events, and Alex Almoukov in biathlon. Former Mt Beauty local and Windy Corner ski instructor Duane Butcher was also in Vancouver assisting head coach Finn Marsland with team waxing support. It was great to have a team of three cross country athletes competing at the Winter Olympics for the second games in a row, and already plans are beginning for Sochi 2014!

The National Team will return to Falls Creek for the 2010 Australian winter, with the first training camps beginning on-snow at the end of June. With the new 4-year Olympic cycle beginning, the focus of the team will shift towards development, bringing new junior skiers onto the team and taking more athletes through to World Junior Championship and World Championship levels.

The National Team works closely with Ross Forrest the Falls Creek head cross country groomer to help ensure the tracks are in the best possible shape. When you arrive at Falls Creek look to the notice board at Windy Corner to find out where the best tracks are and what the National Team is up to. You can also find the most recent “XC Twitter” trail reports on the Falls Creek website. Competitions of all levels are held at Falls Creek throughout the season, culminating with the Kangaroo Hoppet at the end of August. Come to Falls Creek to train and race with Australia’s best skiers on world class ski tracks!

Have a Winter Olympian Visit Your SchoolDoes your school have a cross country ski team or ski program, or are you trying to get one started? Members of the Australian XC Ski Team can be available to visit your school to make a one hour presentation on cross country ski racing.
