The Tale of Two Birthday Celebrations

Pender County Humane Society's 10th Birthday fell victim to the July heat! On the 20th the heat index was 103 degrees. I do not remember it being that hot 10 years ago! Nonetheless we started at 8:30 to prepare for the party. We iced the drinks, hung the birthday banner donated to us from Signs By Tomorrow Wilmington on the shelter, set the tables for lunch, and added two raffle baskets for prizes, all in preparation for our guests. We kept the birthday cake and cupcakes in the shelter office so they would not melt. Just about ALL the shelter employees and volunteers were on hand to lead our guests through the shelter. When 11:00 arrived we were ready to celebrate with the public. This is where the heat played its role - through-out the day we had 15 or 20 supporters visit. Some had been to the Grand Opening 10 years before. How they complimented us on how much we had accomplished during those 10 years! When noon arrived Ms. Myra from MeMa's Chick'n & Ribs served lunch. She was such a trooper for serving in all the heat, it was all delicious! Next came dessert - birthday cake and cup-

cakes - YUM! For those brave folks who did attend we had a chance to share memories. After we cleaned up we all left around 3:00. We had survived the heat - tired, hot, and exhausted! What will the next 10 years bring? For Our Furry Friend's Birthday Party - What a difference air conditioning makes! As soon as the doors opened they were busy the entire day! Other than cookies and cupcakes the "surprise" was 50% off everything in the store! When all was said and done the sales for the day were over $900! That is a birthday celebration all on its own! Many of the shoppers have been supporters of the store for many years! Regardless of where you celebrated we THANK YOU for your support that day and the previous 15 years and 10 years! Many of us have family and friends who have allergies. Or, we ourselves suffer with itchy eyes, runny noses, and sneezing bouts that accompany seasonal changes in the South. But are you also aware that our loyal pets, our dogs, are afflicted with comparable allergies, but lack the voice to complain of these miseries? Dogs may be missing the means to express their discomfort, but if you observe your dog’s behavior change for more than a few days, and it reflects some of the following symptoms, please consult your veterinarian. In dogs, allergies are not quite so simple, and symptoms overlap, as when a secondary infection sets in after an ear-scratching bout. You may observe the following, either singularly or in combination - diarrhea, vomit-ing, sneezing, itchy and malodorous ears/earflaps, runny eyes, constant licking, swelling of the face, lips, eyelids. Skin Allergies In dogs, allergic dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), is the most common, led by flea allergy dermatitis. Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva, resulting in itching at the base of the tail, inflamed and scabbed skin. Products used in treatment of the yard should be concentrated in shaded places under porches and around large bushes where fleas gather. Environmental Allergies Dust, pollen, and mold can cause atopic dermatitis. In most cases, these are seasonal and effected areas are paws, ears, muzzle, groin, eyes, and between toes. Food Allergies “What most people mean is that their dog has a food sensitivity, also known as a food intolerance. Food sen-sitivities, unlike true allergies, do not involve an immune response, and are instead a gradual reaction to an offending ingredient in your dog’s food.”1 By removing the suspected offending foods one by one, the food causing the problem can be identified. True food allergies result in an immune response – symptoms are hives, facial swelling, itchiness, vomiting and diarrhea, or both. In some rare cases, a severe reaction result-ing in anaphylaxis can occur – similar to severe peanut and shellfish allergies in humans; venom, bee stings. These require immediate medical help. Caution: The preceding information is meant to provide a general outline. There is a wealth of Internet and library information regarding dog allergies. Please first seek the advice of your veterinarian. 1 www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/dog.allergies, Klein, Dr. Jerry, AKC Chief Veterinary Officer

CASE STUDY Meet the very handsome Tuxedo Robinson: • Nickname - Tuxie • Rescue from Pender Humane Society via Pender Animal Control, May, 2016 • Male, two plus years old • DNA ID American Staffordshire Terrier/Beagle mix • Personality marked by a need to be with his human family • Side job is to be a comedian My husband and I are near 80, so Tuxie will remain an only child. We chose him because of his small size and the fact he had “aged out” of puppyhood. Tuxedo, from the beginning, proved a wonderful, loyal companion and didn’t suffer any medical prob-lems. However, after about a year with us, we noticed small annoyances. Licking his feet on returning from our fenced grass yard was

the first, and on that vet visit his ears were slightly inflamed. Treatments: Ears treated and medicated pads issued for feet.

Next three visits, only slight ear improvement noted. Treatments: Antibiotics prescribed, anal glands expressed (I mentioned that because this usually

sound-sleeping dog was digging at his groin area nightly), soothing lotion for groin, and Benadryl for sleep.

At this time, Tuxie was showing outward signs of wear on his skin, abdominal area especially. Treatments: More medication.

My vet and I felt it was testing time. The IDEXX test did not include food sensitivities, but identified allergies to cat dander, storage mites, and grain smut.

Treatments: Mattresses steamed, pillows covered with micromesh cases; rugs, bedding, cleaned daily. All I had to show for all of these efforts was a very clean house, but improvement of Tuxie’s condition was minimal.

The time had come to examine the diet. I had been cooking most of Tuxie’s food, including chicken, salmon, and boiled ground beef, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, plus refrigerated commercial dog food.

Treatment: One by one we eliminated, until we were left with chicken, green beans, and refrigerated food. Our vet asked if we would try feeding him chicken-based prescription food twice a day, along with his favorite green beans. We agreed to try.

RESULT: Within three months Tuxie’s fur had filled in completely, no ear problems, and no licking. Although the process was tedious, he’s back to sleeping like a baby, and his belly is again covered with soft, shiny black fur.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AREA ANGELS DONATE TO PAYING OFF SHELTER DEBT
In our Spring /Summer newsletter we mentioned how our supporters could help make our Humane Society Shelter's 10th Birthday a bigger celebration by being able to burn our mortgage. The mortgage owed at that time (May) was $21,940. With our monthly mortgage around $575 we brought the amount down by $1,150. This was in May. It was barely 2 weeks after the newsletters had
been mailed that the "Angel" checks started to a arrive, with amounts ranging from $20 - $1,000! By October the amount had grown to $7,500! This reduced the amount we owed to $12,879! With our supporters be-lieving in what we do for the animals they are there for the Humane Society! Gloria smiled every time she wrote in the Donors Book the names of our "Angel" donors. You will see an asterisk by some of the names and that denotes they were instrumental in building the shelter 10 years ago. The names that follow are of those "Angels." What a testament in their belief in what we have done over the years for the homeless ani-mals. If you would like to be part of this "pay off the debt" there is still time! All you need to do is write out a check. In the memo line write ‘for debt pay off’ and send it to Pender County Humane Society, P.O. Box 626, Burgaw, NC 28425. In the 2020 Spring/ Summer newsletter the new "Angels” will be listed. Together this goal WILL be reached ~ your help is invaluable! THANK YOU. Note: Names are in date order of donations received.
Side Note: The most difficult task involved Tuxie’s monkeys. He has three soft monkey toys that he carries every-where. Instructions called for toys to be washed thoroughly, dried, then frozen for twelve hours before returning them, thawed, to Tuxedo. Fortunately, I was able to find a set of identical monkeys!
The past few months have been very busy for our staff with painting and cleaning up the shelter. So far this year we have adopted out 34 cats and 74 dogs!
We have a special needs puppy named Hanna, a 4-month old pit mix. When we took her into the shelter, she had been dealing with demodex mange (non-contagious) which she has been treated for and her fur is coming back. Sadly, we came to find out this little girl has SAS (severe subaortic stenosis) which is a heart abnormality. Because of this condition Hanna’s life will be shorter than the average dog. We are trying to find a family for this sweet little girl that understands she can have a good quality of life with the help of medication and careful observation for signs of heart disease. Some of our long-time cat friends also found their forever families. Star had been at the shelter for over 3 years until Diane came in and saw this sweet boy and decided to give him a loving home. He loved the shelter staff but got nervous when new people came around, so he was over-looked for a long time. He is doing well adjusting to his forever home.
Sissy was at the shelter for over a year. When we found her hiding under our shed at the shelter, we were lucky to have room for her. All this girl wanted was love and attention. She waited a while to find her forever home until Kiersten came in looking to adopt a cat. She fell in love with Sissy. She is doing great in her new home. They have renamed her Maple and she is very attached to the little baby!
Ranger has been with us for over a year. This boy had a very hard life before he came to us. He was so scared of normal things that dogs enjoy like going on walks, car rides. Everything we tried to do, to help him overcome his fear would not work. We reached out to
the community to raise enough money to send Ranger for a little over a month to stay with a trainer named Jeff Coltenback. He made good progress with Jeff. He is still a bit nervous, but he is going on walks better now, going on car rides and he even has a friend at the shelter he likes to play with now. Jeff also taught the staff how to help Ranger overcome his fears. We are so blessed to have such a caring and compassionate community. Thank you all again for the donations and shares to Rangers’ Facebook post! We could not have done this without all of you. Ranger is now available for adoption. We also would like to thank Jeff for all his hard work! He is offering the person who adopts Ranger a free training session and free lifetime training support by phone or email.
Everyone at Pender Humane Society would like to thank our volunteers and supporters for all they do to help with the rescue of all our fur babies.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS By Norma Troutman
11th Annual Fore Our Furry Friends Golf Tournament - Preparations are underway with a proposed date of May 16, 2020. John Valente, our golf event coordinator, has recently sent out proposals to various golf courses and food vendors. A decision on the actual date and time will be made the later part of this year so golf enthusiasts can expect an email or letter to be sent after the bids are evaluated. Shoot a hole-in-one for the chance of a $10,000 or $50,000 cash prize as well as many other golf related prices. Auction items and raffles will also be part of the fun. Take part in the shootout or the kitty litter contest. Breakfast, snacks, full course awards lunch and beer on the course also included in your package. Last year the event was held at Olde Point Golf Club and the event resulted in a profit of $7,281 for Pender Humane Society. We would love to have more people on our golf commit-tee as well as more sponsors. The golf committee will meet monthly December through March and then weekly in April and May. Please contact John at [email protected] if you would like to help organize this event, be a sponsor, or have questions.
The 15th Annual Wilmington Fur Ball (FB) will be celebrating its silver anniversary at the Terraces on Sir Tyler on Saturday, August 8, 2020. This annual gala features a live band, passed hors d’ oeuvres at three stations, a cocktail reception, wine, beer along with live and silent auction items. How exciting that this event created by Pender Humane Society (PHS) fourteen years ago has been such a
huge success with the public! Pender Humane Society and Adopt an Angel (AAA) host this annual event along with many committee members not affiliated with any particular rescue group participating. Over the past 14 years, $266,000 has been raised and given out to 13 no-kill animal rescue groups residing in Pender, New Hanover and Bruns-wick Counties. This past year $22,500 was raised. Since PHS and AAA put on this event, 2/3 of the profit will go to support their respec-tive rescue group with the remaining 1/3 going to other no-kill animal groups in Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick counties. For the upcoming 2020 year, we are seeking more sponsors to enable us to reach a new targeted goal of $50,000. If you would like to be a sponsor or be associated with this wonderful group, please email norma at [email protected]. Please put “Fur Ball” in your subject line. I would like to recognize and thank the following FB committee members who work diligent-ly all year to put on this event: Taffy Collopy (FB President); Steve Willett and Tre’ Ricanek (FB Co-Vice Presidents); Norma Troutman (Treasurer and PHS Volunteer); Jill Jones, Sherry Gloer, Liza Frake, Matt Rassel (AAA Volunteers); Jackie Oakes, Jim Thomas, John Valente, Larry Troutman, Leslie Littlefield, Mike Spenser, Darci Upham and Robin Skees Bradley. What a wonderful team! For information on the Fur Ball, view our website at www.wilmingtonfurball.com. Spaghetti Fundraising Dinners/Raffles With the help of all of you this year in selling and purchasing tickets for our 15th Annual Raffle Fundraising Drive, we were able to raise $7692 for our Shelter. Funds raised will be used for our normal operating costs such as spay/neutering, veterinary bills, utilities, food and other operating costs. At the PCHS Spaghetti Dinner on September 14th in Hampstead, four winning tickets were drawn. The winners were:
1st prize of $1,000 to Jim Harting 3rd prize of $500 to Cathey and Allison Johnston 2nd prize of $750 to Doris Castellano 4th prize of $250 to Lina Dail Please remember that all who purchased tickets were winners since all of you contributed in
helping us save the lives of many animals. The 2020 fundraising dinners/raffles are being planned but have not been finalized. More information will be sent out later as details evolve.
Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
