I want to Thank Lesley Francis to have this opportunity to share with you the Pet Alert Emergency Information System and the benefits it can have for your pets and community1

Pets. They Are Everywhere and Do You Know?63% of all US households have, at least, 1 pet

It's estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States alone - that doesnt included the unfortunate animals that are in shelters.

You must realize your personnel will have an experience or incidents during an emergency involving a pet.2

Residential FiresSince 2000, according to the National Fire Protection Association, there have been at least 362,000 residential fires per year. According to the ASPCA, 56% of households have pets. That means that 202,000 of total house fires per year have at least one pet at the residence. Thats 555 house fires per day that involve pets.

In the last 15 yrs. pets involves in house fires have increased drastically

3

50% of 911 Calls can Involve a PetToday it is now a 50% chance a pet will be involved in the incident.

Medical EmergenciesAccident Autos Alarm CallsHome Disputes Narcotics and other violations

In todays world 50% of 911 will involve a pet however you are lucky being in a smaller populated state.Los Angeles Co alone has roughly the same population as the entire state of GA

4

Lack of Information about Pets During Home Emergencies Can CauseDelay in Service to a Medical PatientInjury to First Responders and/or the Animal trying to be ContainedAccidental death of the Pet or a PersonAll because of a Lack of InformationNot Knowing What Type of Pet First Responders May Encounter and Can Cause Time Delays, Injury or Death.

Pet can cause delays that can cause bad things to happen during an emergency they are only animals and they are afraid too.5

Pets Depend On Their Owners for EVERYTHING

The humane and pet bond is extremely emotional for both. Even cats are elated to see the owners return home.6

Dogs Are Family and Need to be Protected Too

Most people today consider they pet Family and think you personnel should do the same.Heres an example- Hear the word Daddy?7

Pet Owners Need to Know and Understand the RisksPerils of Pets Left Home Alone

8

Pets & House FiresMore than 500,000 pets die in house fires each year.

If the right actions are not taken during the House Fire pets become frighten, lost, injured or can Die from Smoke Inhalation.

Pet are still dying in house fire along with people but we need to also up date pet owners education to help fight the battle.9

Smoke inhalation kills quickly:Birds only have a few minutes due to their small lungs.Dogs usually get excited, panic and hyper ventilate during a fire, so they inhale smoke faster and have usually about 10-15 minutes depending on their size. Cats usually hide and lay low where the smoke is less, so they have the longest chance to strive, maybe about 15-20 minutes.Other Caged pets are at the mercy of their location and the type of fire.

10

Pets Home Alone can be in danger

Not having the right information for first responders, at hand and easily accessible, can cause life threaten time delays.

The Pet Alert System can help decrease pet fatalities by providing proper information quickly and by educating pet owners on how to handle their pets in a house fire.

11

What Happens if No Information on Pets is Available in Other Types of Emergencies? In a medical emergency of the pet owner, pets can cause injury or death to the people and themselves, if they become aggressive.Pets can be overlooked and left behind.Pets can end up at the shelter with no option for their future.Pets are family, so lets provide the right information to help first responders by giving pets a voice in an emergency and help provide information for their future.

12

A Window Sticker is NOT Enough

Designed with all emergency depts. to meet protocols & assist first responders by having current inforegarding all pets -in a easy to use universal format that can be removed with the pets, if needed.

Just because we are in the low co we need to take up the task.People are moving to this area everyday and Pet Alert can help you and pet ownersSomewhere is the us someone calls 911 every 15 seconds13

Benefits of Using Pet AlertPet Alert Emergency Information System is the only system that provides more detail info regarding your animals, their health conditions and contacts to care or house your pets, if you are not able to - which can save them from going to the animal shelter or being abandoned or even put to sleep (Especially true with elderly pets or pets with health conditions).

14

Why Was Pet Alert Created?Pet Alert was created because pet rescue warnings were and still are insufficient. Pet Warning Window Stickers are often ignored by First Responders due to the lack of correct information and can unnecessarily risk a firefighters life if the sticker information is old and outdated.

Because of my concern for my own pets and a neighbors and family member loss of their pet I found that the Please Save My Pet Window Stickers - Just like the Tot Finders Stickers were usually negated by Fire dept. or found unless because they do NOT provide enough information or you have no idea how long its been there.15

Who Helped in Pet Alerts CreationI created the Pet Alert Emergency Information System with the help and input from officials in all emergency agencies sectors, including:ParamedicsFirefightersPoliceCanine OfficersAnimal Control OfficersState Highway PatrolVeterinarians

So I challenged the Fire Chief Association in CA if I could come up with a system that they would use to fit in their protocol would they use it they took my challenge and give my a board of first responders for reference- they all put me through heck but in 1990 the first Pet Alert kit which was very simple - came to be.

16

Pet Alert is Your Pet's #1 Defense!Specially designed items to help you" prepare and safeguard your pets and animals during all types of emergency situations. Such as: 911 Medical Emergencies, House Fire, Auto Accident, Pet Owners Hospitalization or Death, and Natural Disaster Evacuation.

17

Overwhelming Numbers of Pets in the U.S. Statics show in the United State there are:

On average 47% of all households have a dog and about 37% have a cat. The average pet owner has up to five pets. (Dog, Cat, Birds, Hamster, Fish, etc.)Pet Owners now have Handicapped Pets. (Blind, Deaf or pets that have Medical Needs)

(Source: APPA)

However to my mistake I left the kit with the Fire Association when I left CA in 1995And they dropped the ball. In 2000 A couple of Fire Chiefs called me to ask what happen to it that started my long 10 yr. in bringing the system back- and update it to todays standards with pets being everywhere. Statics show- 18

PET ALERT Covers All Information NeededPet Alert System (kit) provides in-depth and vital information about your pets by description, location of pet (which is very important, if your pet is caged), your pets health history, fear factors and if your pet is handicapped (such as deaf, blind, and/or needs medication). This information is needed and important for emergency personnel and others to HELP locate and rescue your pet.

Concerns for Single People & the Elderly Who Have PetsThere are millions of pet owners who live alone with their pet. If these pet owners are ever injured or immobilized and then unable to communicate to emergency personnel, then pets will go unnoticed and subsequently be left unattended. Being home alone is essentially a death sentence for most pets. These pets will succumb to dehydration within a few days or can become injured trying to get out, cause damage or even starve, if no one knows about them.

Another problem that the Pet Alert Kit can help with.24

Pet Alert Owners Wallet ID CardPet Owners Wallet ID Card is to be carried with the owners Drivers License or Id for proper notification and offers contacts to care for the pet, in case of hospitalization or death of the pet owner.

Pet Alert Key Tag is great for joggers that have emergencies to alert people they have pets at home and to contact a designated person.

The wallet Card for single and elderly person notification that they have pet at home with a contact number.

25

Cars / Trucks and PetsNearly 56% of pet owners have driven with their dog in a car at least once a month over the past year.Over 50% of people travel with their dogs in a car, but only 16% restrain their dog.Note: An unrestrained 10-pound dog in a crash at 50 mph will exert roughly 500 pounds of force, while an unrestrained 80-pound dog in a crash at only 30 mph will exert approximately 2400 pounds of force. Unrestrained pets injure not only themselves but passengers and drivers.(Source: AAA/Kurgo survey)

26

Pet Problems with Auto AccidentsPets riding in the car with their owners is a common occurrence. Unfortunately, some of those rides turn into accidents. Injured pets can be aggressive and can hurt emergency personnel, if there are surprise and unexpected. If a pet is uninjured, can be let out of the vehicle by mistake in oncoming traffic which can lead to other accident or the pet gets lost.Pets can be unconscious and not found by emergency personnel within the wreckage.

Millions of pets are involved in auto accidents now27

Pet Alert Helps with Vehicle NoticesAuto On-Board Mirror Tag alerts First Responders of the pet traveling in the vehicle Provide contacts to care for the pet.Pet Owners are to store Mirror Tag in glove box or console when pet is NOT in vehicle.

Richmond Hill Supports Pet Alert

PETS ACT Has Changed PoliciesOver the last 20 years Pets have become Family Members and all Emergency Agencies have come to realize that, especially with the help of the PETS ACT enacted in 2006 to make pets part of the evacuation process and recovery protocols for disasters.

I have been working with Fire and Police Depts. regarding pet safety issues for over 20 years.

And attitudes have changed greatly towards pets and because of the Pets Act they are now part of your responsibility.34

Disasters and Re-Entry Pet Problems(Man-made or Natural)All Natural Disasters present similar and differing challenges to pet owners, first responders and other emergency personnel. Pets left behind can create problems during a Disaster and in the Re-Entry ProcessInjured and sick pets can spread disease and contaminant water suppliesPet Alert also helps Pet Owners to prepare and Emergency Response Team with information on pets evacuated or left behind

The Deluxe Pet Alert kit by the request of Fire Chiefs, comes with a Pet Alert Back Pack, Collapsible and flashlight with basic needs to build a 3-day disaster/survival kit for the pet or pets Preparation as you know is key for safety35

Pet Alert Can Help In DisastersPets panic and are hard to evacuate if preparations are not taken in advanceMany times, pets are lost or left behind in the evacuation process. This is when Pet Alert can be vital in the notification to emergency personnel and first responders. The Pet Alert Kit contains an Evacuation Pet Notices stating if pets were safely evacuated or if they have been lost or left behind.
