“WHY PEOPLE SHOULD QUIT GAMBLING”

What is gambling? a sport? a hobby? According to oxford Dictionary, second edition ‘gambling’ desires from word ‘gamble’ can be define as an act of betting money and something you do that is a risk. As according to Wikipedia , gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value. Gambling an event with an uncertain outcome is the primary intent of winning additional money or material goods. Gambling requires three elements for instance consideration, chance and prize. The outcome of the wager is often immediate, such as single roll of dice or a spin of a roulette wheel. Allowing wagers the outcome of future sports contest or even an entire sports season. In a fact, gambling is a major international commercial activity, with the calculated gambling market an estimated $335 billion in 2009 income. In other forms, gambling can be conducted with materials which have a value and not necessary are real money.

Gambling is believes to be earliest form of entertainment before technology such as internet, games and television exist. Evident points show that gambling had taking place in China around 2300 B.C. Bark around the year 100 A.D, king Olaf of Norway and king Olaf of Sweden used dice to decide territory. They did this because they had a difference opinion. China is thought to be the origin of playing cards. When Chinese developed paper, this had them to developed paper money. The Chinese learned how to shuffle paper money, ad believe that is where the practice of shuffling cards came from. In the 1830’s Cincinnati became the place where casinos and house cuts were developed. Refugees set up gambling houses where the house would take a 10 percent cut from the games. There are several reasons why people involved in gambling. First and foremost is the accessibility of gambling. They are widely available in bars and casinos. Anybody can access to the machine even teenagers can easily play also. Next, you can get a lot of cash for reward. It only cost 25 cents to play with certain machines because you only need pocket change to play and because it seems like a really small amount of money. “It does not seem like a big investment (King, m., march 1999). Besides, gamblers believe by gambling can release tension. Some said, gambling let’s them forget their problems. Eventually, when they involve in gambling they start to jump into another problem. In the other form, gambling is the only shot at becoming a millionaire. It is because they want to be rich and because of higher demand in terms of need rather than earning or salary.

There are many effects of the addiction on gamblers. The player can lose all his money, house, and job. He can lose his wife and even kids. Men are often the gamblers and women or children are the ones who are often physically or sexually assaulted. Often, because of this, the player thinks about suicide and can even attempt it. He can also able to committed terrible criminal acts. Next, tilt is the psychological state when big losses have a tremendously bad effect in our calmness and one starts betting uncontrollably. Tilt can happen in every aspect of gambling, such as losing in sports betting for several days in a row. Losing in gambling might sometimes lead gamblers to even harm themselves or get angry with their family and friends. Besides, this is also impact on children. When a parent or caregiver has a gambling problem, children can feel forgotten, depressed and angry. They may believe they must take sides between their parents.

Why people should quit gambling? This is what we discuss. First, gambling addiction can cause you to lose your friends and family very easily. Many divorces are caused by a gambling addiction

and result from untreated addiction. A gambling problem creates tremendous social isolation since gambling seems to become the most important thing. Next, an untreated and severe gambling problem can cause the worst anxiety and depression which leads to an incredible sense of despair. Third, this addiction can cause a lack of functioning in all areas of life, including work. Many people have lost their jobs as a result of gambling problem. This can compound the financial devastation already experienced from the addiction itself. Furthermore, compulsive gambling can become all encompassing. The physical health of gambler can deteriorate rapidly. If they struggling with this addiction yourself, they may not be eating right, exercising, visiting a doctor or taking care of your teeth. These physically problems can truly take a serious toll on health and the neglect of the body can result in very serious consequences. Lastly, financial ruin is a direct result of this addiction gambling debts can become so huge and insurmountable that bankruptcy seems to be the only option. Debt from gambling can also result in foreclosures, loss of savings, retirement accounts, and maxed out credit card. The financial full out of a gambling addiction can last long past the time that the addiction stops.

Therefore, it is our responsible to stop gamblers from gambling. Let us enforce and unite together to stop gambling. In addiction of being the biggest revenue producer for governments, video lottery terminals are also the biggest cause of problem gambling. No other style of gambling creates such an hypnotic fascination. It is seen many times that it is very difficult to resist the temptation to drop a coin when given the opportunity. It cannot be denied that problem gambling is a reality and we have to do something to stop it. Solutions such as banning the machines are efficient and we should do it everywhere. As Quinn says, a director of Carolina psychological services in Columbia “video lottery machines are not worth the cost to society in lost productivity on the job, crime, divorce and bankruptcy” (Vegas Professor, October 13, 2000 )
