FCCLA Basics

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national

student organization that helps young men and women become strong leaders in families,

careers, and communities through Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Education.

Through their FCCLA involvement, students:

• sort out thoughts• analyze situations• set goals• interact with others• apply classroom knowledge• and become leaders in today’s—and

tomorrow’s—families, careers, and communities.

And all this while

having fun!

FCCLA offers members important opportunities to:

• belong to a group that operates at the local level and extends nationwide

• build relationships with caring adults• express creativity• channel energies for positive action• participate meaningfully in their families,

schools, and communities• integrate core academic and Family and

Consumer Sciences learning.

FCCLA is an integral part of FACS Education.

• FACS teachers serve as FCCLA advisers. • Chapter projects and activities stem from and

enhance FACS programs of study. • FCCLA projects give students expanded

opportunities to apply knowledge, practice leadership, participate in the community, and learn about themselves.

FCCLA provides information, support, and ready-to-use materials to help FACS teachers

integrate leadership and student-directed learning into their programs.

While expanding students’ learning and opportunities, advisers find that

FCCLA helps them:• engage students in learning

• increase opportunities for authentic assessment

• meet students’ educational and developmental needs

• discover additional rewards of teaching

• promote the FACS program.

and competencies.

FCCLA helps teachers…• publicize the FACS program to parents,

administrators, and community• enrich classroom teaching • motivate students to learn• address learning preferences and serve special

populations• fulfill student performance standards and competency

development• demonstrate and assess student learning• expand professional experience and tap into a

professional support system.

school and learning• address educational standards and goals, especially

related to life skills and career exploration• enhance students’ sense of ownership and caring in
