e storm drains in Forest Chase drain DIRECTLY into our creek. Never dump anything into our storm drains thinking it is going to a wateratment plant. Try to use a covered recycle bin, as wind can take plastics down the drains and fill the creek. Be aware: a lot of our creek is on poperty, and is not just a neutral border between properties.

Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, VP of FCHOA

    Geology in Forest Chase

Why is the dirt in our yards red? Just how oldIS that boulder in your yard? Which is taller:Sweat Mountain or Stone Mountain? Theanswers may surprise you!

Forest Chase is located at 34 latitude and -84longitude. In other words, we are somewhatcloser to the Equator (0 latitude) than we areto the North Pole (90). Also, we are abouta quarter of the planet away from Greenwich,England (0 longitude).

Forest Chase lies in the Piedmont geologicalregion of Georgia. Piedmont means foothills.Like the rest of the Piedmont, Forest Chasehas red clay soil and old, metamorphic bedrock(more on that later). Our soil is red for thesame reason your blood is red: it contains iron.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, what is nowAfrica was crushed up against North America. This created the Appalachian Mountains and

created huge pressure on the Earths crust inour region. This pressure and heat changed therock here to be heavier and denser with finecrystals. The boulders found around ForestChase are mostly gneiss (pronounced nice),schist or granite and are over 250 million yearsold.

I know its a bummer, but fossils cannot be

found in Forest Chase because our rocks aremetamorphic any fossils that were here weredestroyed long ago by heat and pressure.

Forest Chases lowest elevation (my yard!) isjust under 1,000 feet above sea level. Thehighest point is the Wigley Road entrance, atabout 1,160 feet. If you walk from the pool tothe entrance, you not only walked over half a

mile, you climbed about 150 feet.

Forest Chase lies in the valley of SweatMountain (1,688 feet) to our east. SweatMountain is actually TWO FEET HIGHERthan Stone Mountain! It is the second highestmountain in Cobb County, after Kennesaw

Mountain. A lot of Georgias mountaintops are protected in parks, but SweatMountain is not, which is why it is such adraw for communication towers. The nearbyMountain View area is named for its view ofSweat Mountain.

House fires take a heavy emotional toll on families.Homes can be repaired or rebuilt, but personalpossessions such as photographs, home videos and afavorite teddy bear can be difficult, if not impossible,

to replace. Personal property isnt the only thing atrisk. It takes only two minutes for a fire to becomelife-threatening. Each year, more than 2,500 deathsand 12,600 injuries are caused by home fires in theUnited States, according to the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency.

Help protect your family, memories and possessions

from fire by utilizing these prevention tips.

    Electrical fires

Do not overload extension cords or wall outlets. Make sure all electrical cords are in good condition, with no

    exposed wires or cracked insulation.

Do not run electrical cords under rugs or carpets.

Do not use light bulbs that exceed the wattage limit of lightfixtures and lamps.

Use surge protectors for computers and home electronics.

Cords for large appliances, such as washers, dryers andrefrigerators, should be in good condition and grounded.

    Cooking fires

Do not leave the stove unattended when cooking. If you needto leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time, turn offthe stove.

Enforce a kid-free zone of three feet around the stove.

Do not cook if you are drowsy or have been drinking alcohol.

    Chimney and dryer vent fires

Have the chimney flue professionally cleaned and visuallyinspect the chimney for cracks each year.

Regularly clean lint from the lint trap, the rear of the dryer

and the exhaust pipe. Never run your clothes dryer while you are asleep or gone.

Have gas powered dryer professionally inspected annually.

Visit amfam.com for more fire-prevention tips.

    Smoke Alarms

Homeowners should be prepared for a fire by properlyinstalling and maintaining smoke alarms. Here arerecommendations from the U.S. Fire Administration.

Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including thebasement.

    Test smoke alarms monthly

Replace smoke alarms according to the manufacturersrecommended replacement timeframe.

Replace batteries in both hardwired and battery-poweredsmoke alarms at least once a year.

Some fire departments offer reduced-price smokealarms or may install battery-operated smoke alarmsin your home at no cost. Contact your local firedepartments non-emergency phone number to find

out if these services are available in your area.

    Fire Extinguishers

Make sure youre prepared for a potential fire by havinga fire extinguisher on each level of the home and wherea fire is most likely to occur, such as kitchens, garagesand laundry rooms.
