    SUMMER 2013

    July-September

Theres been a huge learning curve that camealong with the volunteer role of being a part ofthe orest hase oard of Directors. Itstaken us six long months to get our bearingsin the organization, figure out the strengthsand talents of the members, earn trust, raise

communication, and dig a bit deeper in to thehistory of the neighborhood.

We arent even close to being done yet with thestated goals. owever weve reached a point inthe finances where we feel like we need to report, reflect, and set some serious goals for the future.Weve spent many hours pouring over the books.ur new treasurer Ginger Pearson, and ourconsulting and past treasurer, Stephen Guerra,

have been such a valuable asset to the .Please say thank you to them for their service toour community!n the next page you will see two columns.ne is for the year and the other is for this year. We have tried to project spending andexpenses for the entire year, however sometimeschanges or issues arise. These projections arebased on last years expenses, estimates, orcontracts weve had re-written for the year.Weve also trimmed some fat from the spendingby renegotiating contracts with our vendors,

being creative with spending, self auditing ofexpenses, and trading ad space in our quarterlynewsletter.

To reach and meet our budget we will neto collect $8,. We divide the membershipfunds collected and they are allocated for civicor pool expenses. That means that $5 of the$ pool membership dues are used for the

pool. While the remaining $75 is devoted to thgeneral fund for expenses. We have decidto split the expenses to track more easily wheremonies are coming in and where they are goingout. s of June 4, we have 46 civic and full members. This is the highest participation years, we appreciate the enthusiasm and suppor

We feel very strongly about being financiallytransparent and we are open to conversation if

you have any questions. We also look forwardto your financial support since we can not tackthis budget alone.

There are tremendous responsibilities and potentialliabilities that come with owning a dog. Theenters for Disease ontrol and Prevention reportsthere are approximately 4.7 million dog bites peryear, resulting in 8, injuries that requiremedical attention. alf of those injuries are topeople under the age of 8.

Dog behavior is a serious concern for everyone.Insurance companies often pay civil judgmentsfor dog bites that happen on their customersproperties. Those payments affect insurancepremiums that policyholders pay.

Dog bites cost the property/casualty insuranceindustry roughly $4 million in . Since, the cost of these claims has risen nearly 7percent. When you consider those types of claimsaccount for nearly one third of homeownersliability claims, it is important to do everythingyou can to prevent dog bites.

The enters for Disease ontrol and the U.S.umane Society offer the following tips on howto prevent dog attacks. Share this information

with your loved ones for protection in a variety ofsituations:

    For owners:

Responsibility as a dog owner begins beforethe puppy or dog is brought home for the first

time. Research dog breeds and select a dogsuitable to your family and lifestyle. If you arebuying a puppy, ask to meet the parents andobserve the setting in which the young dog wasraised.

Train or socialize your dog. Dont playaggressive games with your dog.

    Spay or neuter your dog.

Seek professional advice if your dog starts tobecome aggressive, such as growling or nipping

losely supervise children when around dogs. The size of a child may cause a dog to act in adominant way toward a child.

    For everyone:

If a strange or threatening dog approaches, stand still. Dont run or scream. Try to back

against a tree or car. If you have time, climb ona car or up a tree. Then call for help. If the dogmoves away, you can then move away carefully.

If a dog knocks you down, lie on the groundwith knees tucked to your chest and a fist overeach ear. Remain very still and quiet.

    Dont stare. Staring threatens dogs.

e aware that about 8 percent of dog bitesoccur in the victims home or at a friends

home. These friendly dog bites account forthe majority of treated dog bites.

Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, VP of FCHOA

    Snakes

There was a flurry of interest recently on theorest hase acebook orum about snakes in ourneighborhood, so I thought this would be a goodnewsletter to talk snakes! Springtime is the best timeto see snakes in orest hase. Snakes will bask in thesun on cool spring days, and most snakes become morenocturnal as the summer heat hits. If you come acrossa snake, LEVE IT LNE. Most snake bites occurwhen a person is trying to harass or kill the snake. It isILLEGL to kill non-venomous snakes in Georgia.

The most common snakes in orest hase are theNorthern water snakes in our creek. They are notvenomous, and live mostly on fish. They are easilymistaken for copperheads, and once in a while I talk toa neighbor who heard the creek is full of copperheads.

    In the twenty

years I have livedin orest hase, Ihave only seen onecopperhead and ithad been run overon orest Way.

Helpful Siding Replacement TipsSummer has finally returned! ut so have all of your outsidechores, such as mowing the grass, planting new flowers, andsprucing up the exterior of your house. Just like the interiorof the house, the exterior becomes worn and weathered overtime. Its important to maintain and replace old siding fornumerous reasons. Not only does it make your home moreattractive, it also protects you from the outside elements, such as rain and bugs. It can also, when using certainmaterials, help with your homes energy efficiency! So howdo you go about upgrading or replacing your siding?Well, there are several things to consider before you start theprocess: when its time to replace, the type of material that

should be use, and who should be hired to do the work.

Time for Replacement?Siding materials vary greatly when it comes to theirrecommended replacement time line. In addition toconsidering the type of siding on your house, your amountof maintenance and areas climate are also factors when itcomes to making your decision. ere are a few signs thatit might be time to replace your siding in correlation to thetype of siding you may have.

. Vinyl- See if it is warped, twisted, extremely mildewed orloose.

. Wood- heck to see if it is rotting, unable to hold paintor swelling around nails and joints.

. luminum- Look for loose, dented, or discolored pieceson the house.

    4. Stone or rick Veneer- Early signs of failure for this typeof material are cracking in the mortar from a bad mix and orcracking in the material itself.

What Type of Materials are Available? While there are several different kinds of siding, here aresome of the most commonly installed materials.

If you are looking for an economical material, vinyl would

certainly be the most cost effective option. Its long lastingand requires very little maintenance. (oamback vinyl isavailable now for better insulation.)

If you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing material, fibercement is the most popular product on the market. It canbe painted or ordered with a pre-painted baked on finish

that is applied by the manufacturer. The highest quality andmost recognized brand of fiber cement siding is James ardiementitious Siding.

Stone or rick is the most expensive option, but its also themost durable with hardly any maintenance needed.

Hiring Your ContractorWith the amount of media access we have at our fingertipsdaily, finding a contractor isnt really that hard. ut findingquality, reliable, and trustworthy contractors can be trickier.ngies List and Trustdale are very good internet resourcesto find highly recommended companies, as well as the goodold fashion word of mouth references from neighbors orfriends. riends who have had work done on their own houcan usually give you an honest opinion and show you theworkmanship first hand.

When you find a contractor, its best to select a contractorthat is ready to show you their quality work and referencepast projects. They should provide you with proof of theircompany insurance, a knowledgeable explanation of theproduct that would be used, and a thorough understanding ohow it should be installed. The contractor should also guideyou through the process and consult with you to determinethe best product for your particular project. With eachproduct being used, there is a system that must be followed tensure correct installment and long lasting performance.

You can get a free consultation from NehemiahReconstruction for any siding project you may have comingup. Nehemiah Reconstruction prides themselves on providinall of the above mentioned criteria that you, as a customer, should look for!
