Go for Gold!
It isn’t just our 56 GB winter athletes in Sochi who do try for their Personal Best,
you can too. We’ve seen this week our first snow medal (bronze), a speed skater just
miss out in the finals by clipping his blade, a creditable 7th in the women's slope style and watched in awe as others have gritted their teeth and set their sights on medals.
We may not have Olympians in our midst (just yet!) but some of things you have
achieved so far this year have been just as impressive to us. Whether you are a
climber, designer, netballer, film maker, singer, musician, dancer, rugby player, artist,
basketballer, athlete, hockey player, mathematician, thespian, writer, footballer, raised
money for charity or did
your best in your mock
exams, were one of the
88% of Year 11 who
achieved A* - C in
English in the November
exams, or attempted
something new this year that you haven’t tried
before…well done!
With 20 academic weeks behind us and 19 to go
we are exactly half way through your school year.
So if you haven’t reached those goals you set for
yourself this year…don’t worry…there’s still
time!

returned to secure your seat. Please give your completed reply slip to your Drama teacher before half term.
Drama Department
Phoenix Dance Theatre (Access and Education
Department) are looking to recruit young male dancers (14-
25 year olds) for a new project through an energetic and
creative taster session. The project is targeting young talent
from across the Bradford region. They wish to reach young
men who perhaps have never considered trying
contemporary dance before/have no formal dance
education/exposure to dance.
Phoenix Dance artists will come to IGS and run a 1.5 hour
long workshop for up to 25 students. Those who stand out
may be offered a once in a life time opportunity to work
with professional dance artists from Matthew Bourne’s New
Adventures and perform at the Bradford Alhambra,
alongside the company from 3rd – 6th December 2014.
If you are interested then please see Miss Watson to add
your name to the list. An information session will take place

Year 9 Art Work
A group of Year 9 students have recently enjoyed the thrill of seeing their artwork displayed in school. The group
of artists who started their work in Year 8, used their iPads to capture images, simplify them, and then turn them
into large vibrant artworks, a great marriage of technology meets artistry, The pictures are high impact and are
currently on display in an area where Key Stage 3 students can view and enjoy them at break and lunchtime.

School Council
This week in our school council meeting we were discussing the interview questions that the students would ask
the teachers who want the job of being our Headteacher. There was a range of questions that we decided to use
that would test the personality and teaching style of the possible Headteacher.
There were things like, 'Who do you most admire?' and 'What do you think about our Personal Best system?'
While we were doing this two youth workers came in to watch the meeting, as in a few weeks members of the
student council will be getting advice about how to be a young leader. Finally our questions were assigned to
certain years and are now ready to be asked next week at the interviews.

GCSE Overview

Career of the Week: Chef
The Work: chefs prepare food using a variety of cooking methods. In large
kitchens they work as part of a team and look after one food area like bread and
pastries or vegetables. The head chef runs the entire kitchen.
Your main tasks would include:
Preparing, cooking and presenting food in line with required standards
Keeping preparation at the right level
Making sure that food is served promptly
Monitoring food production, ensuring consistent quality and portion size
Stock control
Following relevant hygiene, health and safety guidelines
Entry Requirements: you would usually start as a kitchen assistant or
trainee chef (also known as commis chef). At this level you would spend
time in each area of the kitchen, learning a range of skills and how to look
after kitchen equipment.
You may not need any academic qualifications to work as a trainee chef,
some employers will prefer you to have a good general education
including GCSEs in Maths and English. You could prepare for working in
this industry by taking a part time or full time course at college.
Apprenticeships are also widely available as a way in.
Training and Development: college courses at Level 2 will take 1 year
and Apprenticeships are usually for about 2-3 years. Once working you
will receive induction training and work under the supervision of
experienced staff.

Your employer may encourage you to take further qualifications such as: Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Professional
Cookery, Level 3 Award in supervising food safety in catering etc. See UCAS Progress website below.

earn up to £16,000 a year, second chefs (sous chef) can earn up to £22,000 and head chefs (chefs de cuisine) can
earn up to £30,000 a year. An executive chef in a top hotel can earn between £40,000 to £50,000 and more per
