!Letter from the Director of Bands !Greetings to all Wildcat Faithful from the “Little Apple”! Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of another very successful year of Concert and Athletic performances and events – from the outstanding ensemble concerts with guest soloists to the tremendous Marching Band performance at the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (where we beat Michigan!) I am proud to tell you it has never been better! The level of performance is “through the roof” and the support and encouragement from fans, School of Music, Theatre,

and Dance, Athletics, Alumni, Foundation, and Anderson Hall is tremendously positive and strong!!! The band program continues to grow with well over 750 students participating in 12 ensembles! We have added a “second” wind group called “Wind Symphony” conducted by Donald Linn, and one more University Band – “Purple and Silver”, conducted by undergraduate Music-Ed majors! The ensembles are performing at a very high level and experiences great concerts and guests! The Wind Ensemble has accepted an invitation to play at the “2015 New York International Music Festival” next Spring in Carnegie Hall!!! Our Annual Band events are continuing to grow and be the premier event not only in Kansas, but the region as well. The Central States Marching Festival saw a new record of 43 high school bands perform. The 21st Annual Concert Band Clinic experienced over 1,000 applicants resulting in 650 students to participate. Our Summer Music and Auxiliary Camps has record numbers attending once again. We continue to grow and develop and are now looked upon as a top model band program in the country! I am very proud of the staff, students, and alumni of this great program who continually “bleed purple”!!!! This edition of the newsletter will bring you up to date on a variety of topics and events: The Bowl trip, MPS program, Golf Tournament, New Grad bios, and much more! Marching to Success

Providing for the future of the Pride !The K-State Band program took the big stage in many ways this year. From high-profile guest artists like the Boston Brass and the Jersey Boy’s own Travis Cloer to the epic Les Miserables halftime show that will be talked about for years to come, the Pride of Wildcat Land is beginning to turn another corner in its development as it steps on to the stage of elite university bands. With all the excitement and exposure it is difficult not to take notice of what the Pride has accomplished this year and how the band has grown. !!All this success is, of course, not by accident. First of all, in Dr. Tracz’s 21st year as director of bands at Kansas State, the band is starting to enjoy the return on his investment of a winning attitude and blue-collar hard work. Second, there are many people who work behind the scenes to make this band a success including our incredible Graduate Assistants, Student Staff, and Student Leadership. These people have proven themselves to be leaders and remarkable students that will do anything to ensure the excellence of the pride. Again, people have taken notice.!!More specifically, the Wildcat faithful have taken notice and have made it a priority to help get the Pride planted securely on an elite stage. Alumni and proud K-Staters have set up scholarship endowments for our percussion leadership and also helped purchase our new Yamaha drum line. Through generous donations they have also set up scholarships for the drum majors, trombones, tubas, piccolos, and clarinet leadership in the band. John Currie and his staff at K-State Athletics have also once again generously made a $100,000 donation into our scholarship account for the band electing to bus to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. There are many people who are proud of what their band has accomplished and are taking significant steps to make sure the Pride stays strong now and into the future.!!We are proud of our students and the excitement they will bring to the field for years to come. To all those who help build and strengthen us, we say: Thank You!

People have taken notice: The success of the Pride begins with the great people that love this organization and believe in it’s students. Thanks to all who support the Pride of Wildcat Land.

A Great Year!

K-State Band Year in Review !

The K-State band program continues to grow in numbers, and in level of success. During the past year the K-State band program was able to host an award-winning composer, perform with a member of the Jersey Boys cast, travel to yet another bowl game, and see interest in both the marching band and concert bands at an all-time high. In addition, suppor t f rom our f r iends has been overwhelming.!!

The Pride of Wildcat Land, which saw its largest membership to date, kicked off the year with an all-new drumline provided by Yamaha. Multiple world-class artists including The Boston Brass, and Jersey Boys Las Vegas cast member Travis Cloer joined The Pride for on-field performances. The year was capped with a trip to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and a final performance of one of the most exciting halftime shows to date, Les Miserables. !!Interest in K-State’s concert ensembles also continues to expand. This Fall brought the addition of the Wind Symphony, a high-level auditioned ensemble that performs alongside the Wind Ensemble. K-State also

welcomed composer Michael Schelle, 2012 winner of the Revelli Composition Prize, to work on his piece, “The End of the World.” !!As always, K-State led the way in school outreach brining over 40 bands to the Central States Marching Festival, and receiving over 900 applications for the 21st annual Concert Band Clinic. With continued support from our alumni and friends we plan to keep improving the experience for our students, our future students, and band directors throughout the region.

KSUMB at the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl

KSUMB Heads to Arizona!! !On December 25th, 2013, the K-State Marching Band piled into nine charter buses and took off for the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, AZ. After spending Christmas Day in Albuquerque, NM, the band arrived in sunny Arizona to a warm welcome from the staff at the Phoenix Marriott Tempe at the Buttes. An hour after arriving in Tempe, AZ the KSUMB rehearsed at the Tempe Diablo Stadium, Angel’s Training Facility for about an hour.!!After a day of rehearsal at Tempe High School and pep rallies at the Frontier Hall at Rawhide Western Town and the Phoenix Zoo, the band geared up f o r G a m e d a y . O n Sa tu rday, December 2 8 t h , t h e K S U M B marched in the 3-mile long Fiesta Bowl Parade. After a quick nap back at the hotel, the KSUMB headed to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium on the Arizona State Campus. After two pre-game pep bands, it was time to BEAT MICHIGAN!!!

Again, the KSUMB put nothing but excellence on the gridiron and in the stands to support Coach Snyder and Wildcats’ 31-14 victory over...that other school up north!!! After the closing ceremonies the KSUMB was welcomed by an “all you can eat” buffet provided by Buffalo Wild Wings at the Marriott! Then it was back on the bus to Manhattan but this time with the first Wildcat Bowl Victory since 2002 Holiday Bowl! The KSUMB was grateful for the chance to represent our TEAM, University, and Alumni at the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl! The will not soon forget the people, places, and organizations that made this trip possible.!

Marching Pride Scholars Program

Long time band Photographer and #1 Supporter “Red” Skelton and I went to lunch one day and the meeting started like many other meetings I have with Red: “I have an idea!!!” From this idea, the ‘Marching Pride Scholars’ program was born!!!!All of you know the tremendous pride and passion that Red has for this band and he has given more and done more for this band than anyone can imagine. His love for the K-State Band as a whole is only surpassed by his love for each of his “Kids” in the band - all 370 plus! The idea is simple; the results and benefits are priceless.!!One of the major issues all collegiate marching bands face is the retention of the “older” player. The Junior and Senior years become a challenge for students to not only schedule band in their day but also it has become a challenge to “afford” the cost. Most students will eventually have to make a choice between the band and a part-time job to stay in school. Thus, the “Marching Pride Scholars” is a great way to provide a $500 scholarship to the upperclassmen to stay in the band. The third year of this campaign provided a $500 scholarship for 90 seniors! We anticipate senior members to number over 100 members! Your donation make a HUGE difference and we are grateful.!!It is simple: the more experienced and mature players/marchers are in the band, the better the band can perform. All Senior members continue to grow and with the help of the “Marching Pride Scholars” program, I am confident we can help the students stay with the “Pride”.!!All donations are tax deductible and are greatly appreciated by all. Travis Cloer was a 1995 graduate of Kansas State University in the theatre department. Travis is currently starring as Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys” at The Paris in Las Vegas. Cloer performed at halftime with the marching band, singing “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry,” and “Walk Like a Man.” While on campus, Cloer led a workshop for the theater students and sang at Chapman’s Hall. He tweeted afterward that the performance at halftime was “one of my career highlights!”

Guests at K-State

Boston Brass was a guest of the Kansas State Marching Band on September 7. The group performed during halftime as well as offering several master classes and a solo concert that week. The chamber ensemble performs a variety of popular and classical music. The group has done residencies at the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, University of North Texas, and schools in London, Singapore, and Bangkok. Boston Brass has visited K-State before and their dedication to music education is outstanding.

Michael Schelle is a composition professor at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. Kansas State University was part of a consortium that commissioned Michael Schelle to write a piece titled, “End of the World.” Schelle was on campus this Fall to work with students in the Wind Ensemble on a performance of the piece as well as talking to conducting students, but undergraduate and graduate about commissions and composing. Schelle said the composition started as being a play on the end of Mayan calendar, but turned into an homage to the victims of the devastation in Japan following the tsunami.

Rod Funk Memorial Scholarship!Rod Funk was a part of the KSU Marching Band for a number of years in the mid-1970’s. He was the President of KKY and the

President of the band while he was at K-State. In the late 1980’s, he was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition and passed

away in February of 1993. He was not a man of the biggest size, physically, but a man with a huge heart and a sense of drive – the go-getter type we desire to have at K-State. This scholarship was created by his family and former band member, Karen Nations in

1993 shortly after his passing

Adam Ladd is a 2008 graduate of the Ohio State University where he majored in music education and minored in business. He will be graduating from Kansas State in May 2014 with a Master’s degree in Music with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting.!

Alex Wimmer is a 2007 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he received his bachelor’s in Music Education. He will be graduating from Kansas State in May 2014 with a Master’s degree in Music with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting and will be returning to Kansas State in the Fall of 2014 to pursue a Ph.D

Emily Roth graduated from Doane College in Nebraska, in 2009. Emily has taught 5th-12th grade band at Centura Public School for 4 years and also performs in the 43rd Nebraska Army National Guard Band on saxophone.

Chris Johnson received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Kansas State University in 2008. For the past four years he has been the assistant band director in the McPherson, KS school district teaching at both the high school and middle school.

Incoming Graduate Students

Alex Cook is a 2012 graduate of Kansas State University where he earned his bachelors in Music Education. Alex has taught 5th-12th grade band and choir in the Jayhawk School district for the past two years. He will be returning to Kansas State in the Fall of 2014 to pursue a Master’s degree in Music.!

Recent Graduates !- Andrew Feyes, PhD Music Ed. Candidate, now currently serves as the interim director of bands at the University

of Nebraska Omaha. Congrats also go out to Andy and his wife Kelsey on their new born baby girl, Clara!!!- Kelley Tracz, BM 2013, is on full fellowship at the University of Minnesota where she is pursuing her Master’s

Degree in Oboe Performance. Kelley is currently playing with the top band and orchestra at Minnesota and is assisting in the teaching of the oboe studio.!!

- Jim Johnson, MM Trumpet Performance 2013, is a doctoral graduate teaching assistant at Florida State University in the trumpet studio.!!

- Patrick Sullivan, M. Music Ed. 2013, is now the Assistant Band Director at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri. Rock Bridge is a very strong program where Patrick assists with the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, and Marching Band.!!

- Adam Lundine, B. Music Ed. 2012, currently serves at the Assistant Director of Bands at Blue Valley Northwest High School. Recently Adam was honored with the Kansas Horizon Award given annually to outstanding first year educators in the the State of Kansas.!!

- C.J. Longabaugh. B. Music Ed. 2012, the former Assistant Director of Bands at Blue Valley West, is now pursuing his Master’s Degree in Saxophone performance from the University of Minnesota studying under the legendary Eugene Rousseau. !!

- Ben Cold, MM Saxophone Performance 2012, Ben Cold completed his Master’s degree in Saxophone performance in Dr. Wytko’s studio here at K-State and is now pursuing his doctorate in saxophone performance at the University of Minnesota under Eugene Rousseau.!

K-State Wind Ensemble will perform in Carnegie Hall April 2015 !The classic joke about practicing is about to get very real for the members of the K-State Wind Ensemble. The K-State Wind Ensemble has been invited to be one of two showcased university wind ensembles at the New York International Music Festival. This festival attracts some of the best high school programs in

the country and the K-State Wind Ensemble is proud to be chosen as one of two university showcased ensembles. The University showcase has featured some of the top university wind ensembles in the country throughout the years of the festival’s existence. This will be a wonderful opportunity for both recruitment and K-State musical representation on the national stage. The opportunity to make music in one of the country’s most historic and famous concert halls will be a very wonderful and unique experience. The Wind Ensemble will travel to New York in early April to participate in this music festival that will have the band working with clinicians, working with high schoolers, and collaborating with composers and new music commissions. Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma!!Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma have continued their strong tradition of service to the K-State Band program this past year. In addition to other national awards, both chapters have been winners of the Chapter Leadership Award at multiple past National Conventions, with Tau Beta receiving the award at the most recent convention in 2013. On a local note, Brett Eichman and Amy Kraus were the 2013 recipients of the Bandsman and Bandswoman of the Year awards voted on by our joint chapter. This year we are once again represented at the district level by Samantha Brown, who serves as the Vice President of Membership for the Midwest District and is also running for the Presidential position at the coming district convention.! ! !Our chapters have continued to serve the bands by helping with various projects. This includes check in and check out of uniforms and instruments to the marching band, providing barbecues during camp, set up and tear down of marching rehearsals, cleaning the music building, providing receptions for the various concert ensembles, running the hospitality room and merchandise table at Central States Marching Festival as well as Concert Band Clinic. This year we are also going to, along with the help of Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Alpha Iota, have a building wide service day where we will clean, paint, and fix the parts of McCain that need it most. We also have a brand new joint fundraiser in the form of a 2014 Marching Band Calendar. This calendar and other merchandise sold by Kappa and Tau Beta funds many of our projects. Dr. Schelle is composer-in-residence and the music theory/composition professor at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. He was in the Little Apple for the KSU Wind Ensemble’s performance of his piece “The End of the World”, which was the recipient of the 2012 National Band Association William D. Revelli Composition Contest. Director Activities

A Year in the Life of ...... The K-State Band Director !Things have been busy this year around the band office as we have been working hard to take the band program to new levels. Part of increasing the visibility and quality of the K-State Band is finding the right students to strengthen our future. In the area of recruiting, we do it all and do it right. There is nothing wrong with getting up at 3:30am, meeting any willing staff and undergraduates at the McCain loading dock and driving several hours to a remote location just to work with a band for 45 minutes. We have been doing several clinics this year and we have many more lined up. We also have reached out to many prospective students and their directors by bringing them on campus with several special events:!!-Central States Marching Festival with over 15,000 people in attendance including over 5,000 potential K-State students!-Concert Band Clinic where we are reaching almost 700 students annually!-2 Separate Future Music Educator Days now have over 100 sophomore, junior, and senior high school students interested in the profession!-Summer Music Camp sees over 165 students in grades 5-12 annually in June!-Leadership and Auxiliary Camp trains over 120 students leaders on K-State’s campus in July!-Side-By-Side Concerts in the Spring where we get to feature high school bands in performance with our top Wind Ensemble!-Band Day is an event that will put almost 2,000 high school musicians in a halftime performance with the K-State Band’s first halftime. This upcoming year we are having Trombone Day so let your trombone players know!!!Once again, we are making the Wildcat nation proud by “taking it to the streets” and rehearsing/conducting/teaching in many schools in Kansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio, Alabama, Florida, and Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada!! We took a very successful tour of the East Coast with performance stops in Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Maryland, Washington D.C. and North Carolina! The clinic with the U.S. Marine Band – “The Presidents Own” was a truly spectacular experience for all. We will continue to recruit and spread the “purple” word across the country and the World!!!!With everything going on, we do ask you to HELP US by sending us names of future K-Staters.
