The Strangest Prayer Lenten Worship Series
March 1—March 29
We pray the prayer together every Sunday.
Many of us know the words by heart. Yet, the
prayer taught to us by Christ is anything but
domesticated or tame. John Dominic Crossan
calls the Lord’s Prayer “the strangest prayer”
and names it as a revolutionary and radical set
of words, in Jesus’ context as well as ours. This Lenten season, a time set aside
for prayer and preparation for the celebration of Easter, let us re-examine these
words and discover together their radical call upon our hearts and lives:
March 1: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name...”
March 8: “Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven...”
March 15: “Give us today our daily bread...”
March 22: “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us...”
March 29: “Save us from the time of trial...”
Easter: April 5: “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen!”

This week Justice Matters wraps up research on the specific
problems we will address at the Nehemiah Assembly on
May 7th. The housing committee will seek solutions to the
lack of affordable housing. Regarding children's concerns,
we will seek to prevent and restore the affects of childhood
trauma. We move forward as we investigate the prob-
lems related to mental health.

160 Years of Food, Fellowship, and Faith
To celebrate our 160th Birthday, we are
compiling an up to date church cook-
book. We want this cook book to reflect
who FBC is right now, in 2015, so we
want to include as many people as possi-
ble. People of ALL ages. The cookbook
will feature all the typical categories in a
cookbook but check out some of the new categories we will
include: art, food memories, and creative writing. **To sub-
mit your recipes just look for the forms in the back of the
sanctuary, the church office, and in the Sunday school
rooms. The deadline to submit your recipes is April 1st,
2015....no fooling!! So pull out your recipe box and find
your favorites!!
The Mission Summit is Back!
The American Baptist Churches, USA Mission Summit
(the conference formerly known as the Biennial) is re-
turning to Overland Park this summer (June 26-28).
The Mission Summit is a time of encouragement, cele-
bration, worship, and fellowship, and a wonderful oppor-
tunity to experience the diversity of the American Baptist
world beyond our own walls. We have a special oppor-
tunity here in Lawrence to experience this encounter so
close to our own community, and it is not to be missed!
Our church is an official sponsor of the Mission Summit, meaning that members of our
congregation do not need to pay the full registration price to register for the event. In
order to register, please go to www.americanbaptists2015.org. Registration as a full par-
ticipant throughout the event will cost $40.00, and will afford the opportunity to partici-
pate in all of the plenary sessions, worship events, and mission conversations. Meals
and some pre– or post-events have an additional charge. More information is available in the church office.
Again, this is a wonderful opportunity to have just outside our doorstep! Sign up today!
A Wonderful Sandpaper Moment!
As our Spiritual Formations Ministry reminded us as a part
of our “Five Points” series last year, ours is a “Church of
the Holy Sandpaper.” Like sandpaper in the hand of a
woodworker, it is only by rubbing and occasionally
scratching do we become re-created and beatified. Like-
wise, it is not by “playing nice” and avoiding hard conver-
sations that we experience God re-making us, but in the
honest, vulnerable, real dialogue of faith and life.
I thought that Dr. Molly Marshall’s sermon on Sunday was
a wonderful sandpaper moment! Her words on interfaith
conversation were striking and bold. And they merit fur-
ther conversation.
Thus, you are invited next Sunday, March 8, to a special
adult Sunday school session to share your responses, ques-
tions or thoughts. Perhaps you were “rubbed the wrong
way,” or maybe her words
“scratched an itch” that you have
had for a long time. If you would
like to further discuss, please
come to the Judson room at 9:30,
Sunday, March 8. Let’s do more
than scratch the surface together!

Things are progressing—an exact date to begin floor
