RCIA – Purification and Enlightenment

The First Sunday of Lent is next week, February 18. Lent is a special time for those in the RCIA program. On the

First Sunday of Lent parishes with catechumens will celebrate the Rite of Sending in their church. In our parish,

our catechumens, Jacob Schenk and Jack Monett, will have their Rite of Sending at the 10am Mass. During the

Rite of Sending, Fr. Sean inquires about their readiness by asking the Godparents and Parish Sponsors to testify

to Jacob’s and Jack’s formation and conversion. Fr. will acknowledge the recommendation of the parish

community.

Jacob and Jack will be dismissed from the Mass and sent to the Diocesan Cathedral in Metuchen for the Rite of

Election. Along with all catechumens throughout the diocese, they will receive a personal blessing from Bishop

Checchio. Here, the Church formally ratifies the catechumens’ readiness for the Sacraments of Initiation. In turn

the catechumens – from now on known as the Elect – publicly acknowledge their desire to receive the Sacraments

of Initiation. It is a beautiful ceremony attended by hundreds: catechumens, candidates, Godparents and Parish

Sponsors.

Please pray for our catechumens, Jacob and Jack, for this and the other Rites during Lent as they continue their

journey to embrace our Catholic faith.

To learn more about the RCIA, please call the Parish Office at 908-647-1075 and they will put you in touch with

a member of the RCIA team.
