SABBATH WORSHIP UPDATE

Now that we have offered the 8:30 a.m. Sabbath Worship Celebration for two months, I have joined the Worship Ministry Team in seeking ways to make the service even more meaningful. Following a January Sabbath service, worshippers were invited to share their suggestions. These suggestions and emailed suggestions shared by others were discussed at the next team meeting. Although there are some worshippers who would like to return to a service as it was last spring, many others prefer the new service format or the new service with some modification. Worshippers shared that they found the following meaningful: entering in silence with quiet music before the service, feels more centered/prayerful/personal, reverent without being too stiff and personal without being too casual, alternative experience that is less rushed

and quieter, familiar hymns, not so much standing and sitting, clergy serving communion, sitting closer together, community sharing in a smaller service. Suggestions for enhancement included: monthly communion, more upbeat music and full-length hymns, prelude starting earlier, less somber opening, seating not forced to front half of sanctuary. Based on our findings, the following adjustments have been made to the Sabbath Worship Celebration. Communion will be served monthly instead of weekly. We will sing more hymn verses. Sanctuary seating will be more flexible. Some of our folks are curious about weekly Sunday worship services offered at other Presbyterian churches in our area. The trend is to offer one Sunday worship celebration when the sanctuary can accommodate the congregation. Of the over forty Presbyterian (USA) churches in the greater Richmond area, only eight offer two worship services each Sunday. Salisbury Presbyterian Church is the only church that offers two traditional Sunday services. First Presbyterian, River Road, Three Chopt, Swift Creek, Chester, and Fairfield Mechanicsville offer one traditional Sunday service and a second service that is described as contemporary, alternative, or informal and may not be held in the sanctuary. The Gayton Kirk offers a traditional Sunday service and a small informal Celtic service with weekly communion. As you can see, of the eight churches that offer two weekly worship services, all but one offer a choice between two different worship experiences. We have put a lot of time, effort and money into the renovation of our Welcome Corridor. One of the primary goals of this effort is to give us a basis from which to welcome guests and grow our congregation. One of the primary ways that guests check us out is by visiting a worship service. First impressions are the most impactful and are made within the first few moments of arriving. When a guest enters our sanctuary at 8:30 and sees 35 people seated throughout our sanctuary which seats around 150 people, the sanctuary looks empty. The first impression, before the service even begins, may be that we are an older dying congregation, possibly like other churches that they may have visited before coming to us. However, when we are seated together in the front half of the sanctuary, the impression is more likely to be that this is an intentional smaller service that offers an alternative to the larger service taking place later in the morning. So many of our members would like to draw younger people and families to our church. The unchurched people in younger generations generally are seeking three things: authentic community, putting faith in action, and worship that offers an experience of divine presence. Needless to say, we have so many opportunities for people to put their faith in action and make a difference in our community and beyond. However, before our guests learn about and engage in meaningful Christian service, they will probably visit a worship service. The Sabbath Worship Celebration offers the quiet and prayerful space to rest in the Lord. By sitting together in this smaller more intimate setting and sharing our joys and concerns, we enact our acceptance, care, and support for each other. This is the type of worship experience that many in the younger generations are seeking. It also offers our members and guests a choice between two slightly different worship experiences. As we move ahead in our journey of life in faith together, I will continue to strive to offer meaningful worship experiences for our members as well as the guests whom the Lord brings to our church.

Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center (BAJCC)

Bon Air Presbyterian Church continues to support outreach programs at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center through a bi-monthly birthday celebration for the incarcerated youth. Nineteen of our members participated in this fun ministry with refreshments and games for approximately 100 youth in 2018. We also hosted a Christmas party in one of the residential units of the facility where food, songs and games were shared with 13 youth. In addition, our Session approved a donation of $1,500 for expenses related to the recently formed Jubilee Gospel choir at the correctional center. $717.50 from the children's painted chair auction will also help with ongoing expenses. Twenty-four youth are in the choir and there is a waiting list for future participants. Contact John Rupp or Judi Foster if you are interested in joining this outreach ministry of the church.

BEYOND OUR SANCTUARY’S WALLS

Did you know that the monthly celebration of Holy Communion at Bon Air Presbyterian Church extends beyond the walls of our sanctuary? Indeed, it does.

Prior to each Communion Sunday, the Congregational Care Ministry Team contacts our homebound members to arrange a visit time, if possible and desired. The Worship Ministry Team places into Communion kits the same Communion

elements of bread and juice used during worship. Traveling in pairs, designated elders then visit our homebound members to offer them Communion. Each visit provides a chance to fellowship and discuss current church activities as well as share a church bulletin from that morning’s worship service. Homebound members are eager to catch up on the latest news. A visit also provides a chance to learn if our homebound members have any specific needs for which the church may be of help.

The high point of each visit is the short worship service, which includes prayer and a brief liturgy including the passing of the Communion bread and grape juice. As a visit concludes, the homebound members and visiting elders know that they have shared a precious time together. It is an experience of great joy and humility to share Christ’s love and presence in this way.

Celebrate Birthdays by supporting the Bon Air Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund. Make a gift equal to your age or in honor or memory of a friend or loved one’s birthday. The Fund was established to enable members and friends of the congregation to express their gratitude to God, their appreciation of the saints who established and built the church, and their desire to leave a legacy to future generations that will carry on the mission of the church.

Year after year your gift will help to support Outreach Ministries and benevolences, building and capital improvements, and new or special church programs.

To make your gift, drop your check in the offering plate or mail it to the Church. Be sure to add ‘Endowment Birthday Fund’ in the memo line.

Happy Birthday!

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CHEF’S CLUB!

March 1, 1994, a group of Bon Air members met to discuss the formation of the Chef’s Club. At that meeting, they envisioned six rotating teams. Each team would consist of people who cook, set tables, serve, and clean up for a home cooked Wednesday night dinner. Previous meals were catered. To help the Club grow to their goal, they started with three teams and one catered dinner to round out the month of March. They started quickly on March 9 with Tommy Kellam cooking the first dinner. Judy Clayton and Adele Topham cooked the other two meals that month. By April, Jack Terry had joined the club and headed up the fourth cook team. By September, Lee Skimin had

joined as a head cook, and the club decided a five-team rotation would work well. At this time, dinners were held in the sanctuary. The kitchen area was in today’s Narthex and Sacristy. The Sanctuary chairs and tables had to be set and re-set before and after every dinner. Dinners were $4 per adult, $2 per child. The initial average attendance was about 60, quickly growing to about 100 by year’s end. At the beginning of 1995, the renovation to add today’s church kitchen and fellowship hall started. Chef’s club continued dinners during the renovation as much as possible, only missing three weeks. The Chef’s Club partnered with the Capital Campaign to purchase new and used equipment for the new kitchen. Due to the success of the Wednesday night suppers, the Chef’s club was able to buy all of the needed equipment for the new kitchen except the gas stove. In addition to purchasing equipment, Judy Clayton designed, and Ben Chappell built the central workstation in the kitchen. Also, Ben refinished all of the kitchen cabinets at the time. In 1997 the Chef’s Club was able to supply seed money to start the Grounds Beautification Committee. Ken Pankey, head of the Property Ministry Team at the time, approved the formation of the committee and many hands joined the effort to improve and beautify grounds of the church. The popularity of the dinners continued to grow. Requests for special occasion meals began rolling in. Chef’s Club has catered many events including wedding receptions, minister meetings, organist guild gatherings, Youth Jam (choir festival), birthday parties, anniversary parties, a capital campaign dinner, hosting Presbytery, and other community events. In 1999, Chef’s Club prepared an Easter Breakfast for the congregation as a “one and done” event which continued for seven years. They then began alternating with the Christian Education Ministry Team. In 1999, Chef’s Club was averaging 160 at its Wednesday night suppers. Jim Yuk (a head cook at the time), calculated that Chef’s Club had served 5501 meals that year. The average cost of meal preparation was $1.40 per person at that time. In the early 2000s, Chef’s club branched out in other ways including cooking classes for current and prospective cooks and Chesterfield county food safety classes for cooks. In 2001 U.V. Henderson gathered a selection of cooks’ recipes and bound them for everyone to use; this led to a 120th Anniversary Church cookbook complete with a cover designed by Walter Jefferson. Over the years, Chef’s Club has used its financial success and considerable time and talents to further the Church’s mission in the following ways: Cooking and serving dinner for CARITAS; Donating to various church efforts such as the music program and organ refurbishment; Holding a pancake breakfast for the music program; Taking meals to shut-ins; giving leftovers to Good Sams and nursing homes; supporting AA/Al-Anon; new vestments for the sanctuary; buying/replacing kitchen equipment (refrigerators, freezers, countertops, stove, stove hood, floors, outside grill and cover, convection oven, food warmer, etc.; replacing all of the folding chairs and white tables in the church. Today the Chef’s Club has five teams, two of which are still headed by Judy Clayton and Lee Skimin. Several members who were in that first organizational meeting in March 1994 are still active in Chef’s club today. They are Vicki Callear, Ken and June Pankey, Marilyn Schoettinger, and Judy Clayton. There are too many past and present members to name here. So, those names will be listed on the wall outside the kitchen in March as we celebrate 25 years! In March, we will feature meals that were favorites of some of our past cooks and members: March 6 - Marjorie

Hephner’s Buckeye Beef Stew; March 13 - Tommy Kellam’s Roast Beef with Jack Terry’s Banana Pudding; March 20 -

Jim Yuk’s Husband’s Delight; March 27 - U.V. Henderson and Dot Barnes’ Beef Brisket.

Over these 25 years, Judy and Pat Clayton have been the lifeblood of the club. Their commitment to our church and tireless work ethic have inspired everyone in the Chef’s Club to give time and energy not only to the Chef’s Club but also to all facets of our congregation. Everyone in Bon Air Presbyterian church over the past 25 years has benefited in one way and another from the existence of the Chef’s Club. We should thank all the current and past members any chance we get and we hope to continue this marvelous, life-giving tradition for 25 more years!

Adult Sunday School – February 2019

During the month of February, Bruce Miller will lead us in a study of Timothy. Timothy was the recipient, not the author, of the biblical letters of 1st and 2nd Timothy. He was the co-author of 2nd Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, and Philemon. He and Paul were close friends. Paul wrote to the Philippians, “I have no one like him.” When Paul was in prison and awaiting martyrdom, he summoned Timothy for a last farewell. Plan now to attend and learn more about Timothy.

Lenten Study - Small-Group Study-

Beginning in March 2019

Plan now to participate in one of the small groups as we study Rob Fuquay’s book, Which Way Lord?

Exploring Your Life’s Purpose in the Journeys of Paul. As Christians, we want to understand and live out God’s purpose in our lives, but how do we know we are making the right decisions that enable us to accomplish this? We will study Paul’s journey as he prepared for his ministry to help us understand God’s desire for our lives. The groups will begin meeting during the week of Sunday, March 10. Sign-up for the groups begins on Sunday, February 17, before Sunday School and after the 11:00 service. Books may be purchased at that time.

2019 MISSION TRIP NEWS….

Church and Society (C&S) is planning and organizing a 2019 summer (early August) mission trip to Wilmington, North Carolina to assist with hurricane flooding clean-up and rebuilding efforts. C&S was awarded $5000 from the Endowment Fund, which should cover most, if not all, of the cost (lodging, gas, food) of our mission trip participants. This mission trip is intended to be multi-generational (ages 16 and older) and should have projects that everyone can help with, regardless of your carpentry experience. If you are interested in attending, please reach out to Ernie Wright ([email protected]) to let him know. Please continue to watch and listen for updates as more details become available.

Minister of the Month

Mike Jackson

Thank you to Mike Jackson who designed and built our new mailboxes that are in the workroom. The mailboxes are beautiful and fit our modern décor to a tee! This obviously has been a labor of love and was a time-consuming project. We also thank Pete Gallini and Robert Halpern who helped with the installation. We are thankful for members that serve our church community in unique and lasting ways.
