SOCIALLY SPEAKING Cynthia Holmes-Butler, Peg Shirey Paint Night Paint Night on January 27th was a huge success! Gina Hicks guided us step by step into completing beautiful cardinal acrylic paintings. We enjoyed wine and other beverages and some delicious snacks. February Book Club We are reading WheretheCrawdadsSing for our Winter Book Club. It’s a great book and we are enjoying it! Our meeting is on Wednesday, February 27th at 3:30pm- tea time! Discussion will start at 4pm. Denise Pitchford is hosting the club. Please send me or Denise your name if you plan on coming and haven’t signed up previously.

Temple Trip A trip to the Madir Temple in Rob-binsville is being planned for March. A sheet (blue)was handed out at the January meeting with information about the Temple and trip. We could have lunch after at Mastoris or another restaurant nearby. To have a group tour we need a mini-mum of ten people. The pictures I found on the internet look amazing– a couple are here to the right. Please sign up at the February meeting if you’re interested in going. A date will be chosen later.

ARTS CREATIVE Linda Jones Paint Night The winter cardinal paint and sip night was a relaxing and enjoyable experience instructed by art teacher, Gina Leonar-do Hicks. We had fun using tempera paints on canvas and socializing with various snacks and beverages. Now we have requests for another future paint night, perhaps in the fall. Eight ladies

have a beautiful painting to display for the next several cold months. Book Festival Our WD Library will have their annual BOOK FESTIVAL in May. The art depart-ment will provide a "make and take" craft for the children to assemble. Club volun-teers can help prepare approximately 100 pre-made kits using construction paper, straws, and glue. A sign up sheet will be pro-vided in March for a group of us to help make the kits for chil-dren attend-ing this event.

Spring Arts & Achievement Day The GFWC Garden District will partici-pate in the annual SPRING ARTS AND ACHIEVEMENT DAY on April 18, 2019. This event is fun to attend, participate in, and enter a project or two of creative artwork. There are twenty- ive catego-ries which include door decorations, knitting, paper art, computer art, up-cycle, holiday, painting, and photog-raphy. We encourage our club members to par-ticipate in this contest. Last year nine members attended and enjoyed all the artistic entries of other clubs as well as a delicious luncheon. We were proud of our numerous winners in various cate-gories. Information packets and registration forms will be available at our February club meeting. Please think about enter-ing an item or two as we enjoy a day of remarkable talent in our Garden District. We will carpool together as a group to attend this Spring Conference.

WOMEN’S HISTORY Joan Baur The following narrative and the Report Worksheet were mailed to Carol Niemiec, the State Chairman. NJSFWC Women’s History Report --- 2018 The Woman’s Club of West Deptford was chartered in 1993. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary the club decided to combine the anniversary celebration with the annual Holiday Dinner on De-cember 11, 2018 at a local restaurant. A seven-member committee was formed with the purpose of making the anniver-sary celebration a special tribute to our club members and to highlight our 25 year members. Over a 10 month period of time the committee met many times to plan the event, make gifts, order other gifts, organize decorations, design invita-tions, and make party favors. The guest list included NJSFWC President Mary Wolfe, Garden District Vice President Patricia Dahl, and the nine Charter Mem-bers who have helped to guide the club for the irst 25 years. The nine honorees received silver lanterns decorated with club colors and motifs. They also were presented with a 25-year federation membership pin.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS Louise Avery, Linda Marple Many people think of sexual abuse, emo-tional abuse or psychological abuse; however, batterers also control their partners with inancial abuse. It, like oth-er forms of abuse, often begins subtly and progresses over time. In the begin-ning, a partner might make taking care of inances seem like an act of kindness. Over time, the abuser takes more and more control, allowing his or her spouse less access to money. The survivor in-creasingly becomes more inancially de-pendent on the abuser. So, how do you know if you are the vic-tim of inancial abuse? Ask yourself if your partner does any of the following: ♦ Forbids you from working ♦ Sabotages employment opportunities ♦ Controls how money is spent ♦ Denies you direct access to bank accounts ♦ Gives you an “allowance” ♦ Forces you to write bad checks or ile fraudulent tax returns ♦ Runs up large debt on joint accounts without your permission ♦ Forces you to work in the family busi-ness without pay

♦ Refuses to pay bills for accounts that are in your name in order to ruin your credit ♦ Forces you to turn over paychecks or public bene it checks ♦ Forces you to account for all money you spend by showing receipts ♦ Applies for credit cards using your name & personal information ♦ Withholds money for basic necessities like food, clothing, medication & housing ♦ Spends money on himself or herself but doesn’t allow you to do the same ♦ Gives you gifts or pays for things & ex-pects something in return ♦ Forces you to work while he or she does not & yet still controls all the money If you answered yes to any of these ques-tions, you may be a victim of inancial abuse.

DEAR SECRET PAL To my Secret Pal, HAPPY NEW YEAR!. You have blown me away already! Was it a cowinkedink or what that I am presenting a project to make leece blankets for CASA and I am presented a leece Vera Bradley travel blanket that goes from a pillow to a blan-ket. Today as I was taking the blanket out of the bag to attempt to fold it back into the pillow, I noticed that the bag was heavy. I dug around through all the tissue paper and found CHOCOLATE covered pretzels. Thank you so very much - you are so thoughtful. —XOXO Debbie Dear Secret Pal, I can not thank you enough for my birth-day presents. I love to read and you chose two of my favorite authors! Now I can look forward to a dismal winter day that is just right for a hot cup of tea, a warm blanket and a good book! —Clara

Thank you for all you do!!!! —April Dear Secret Pal, I can't thank you enough for my Irish tea cup/pot and the Irish scarf!!! You totally hit a home run. My favorite things - Irish anything and tea things. These things just made me feel good. Thank you, thank you!!! —Joanne 😘

Winter’s chill is in the air! At least some days… What better way to keep the home ires burning than with a delicious hot soup? In recognition of Heart Health Month in February, here’s a recipe from the Ameri-can Heart Association. Butternut Squash Soup This recipe makes 6-one cup servings; 64 calories, 2g protein, 2g iber per serving. 2 tsp canola or corn oil 2 medium shallots, chopped 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 3 cups) 3 cups fat-free, low-sodium veg-etable broth 2 tsp minced, peeled gingerroot 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/3 cup fat-free half-and-half 1/4 tsp freshly grated or ground nutmeg

Heat oil in pressure cooker on saute. Cook the shallots for 3 minutes or until soft, stirring frequently. Turn off the pressure cooker. Stir in the squash, broth, gingerroot, salt, and pepper. Se-cure the lid. Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. Allow the pressure to re-lease naturally for 10 minutes, then quickly release any remaining pressure. Turn off the pressure cooker and re-move lid. Allow the soup to cool slightly. Working in batches, transfer the soup to a blend-er (vent the lid) and puree until smooth. Return the soup to the pressure cooker. Or use an immersion blender in the pressure cooker pot. Stir in the half-and-half. Cook on the saute setting for 2-3 minutes until heated through, stirring fre-quently. Ladle the soup into bowls and sprinkle with nutmeg.
