GREG BLACK John Smol wins 3M fellowship BIOLOGY PROF ADDS PRESTIGIOUS TEACHING AWARD TO LIST OF RESEARCH HONOURS By NANCY DORRANCE Biology professor John Smol has been awarded a 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Considered the world’s leading paleolimnologist, Dr. Smol is one of 10 recipients across Canada of the prestigious award, presented annu- ally by 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Paleolimnologists are lake scien- tists who study the effects of human and natural impacts on aquatic ecosystems using the infor- mation contained in lake sedi- ments. The 2009 3M citation states: “John’s international recognition as one of Canada’s foremost envi- ronmental scientists, coupled with his award-winning teaching pro- grams for undergraduates, graduate students, and the public at large personifies teaching and educa- tional leadership at its best…As he melds exciting research discoveries into teaching, John’s audience is primarily his students but also pol- icy makers, the media, and the public at large. He believes entering a ‘sacred trust’ with students gives them ‘roots and wings,’ demon- strating an extraordinary generos- ity, sharing his expertise and time.” Dr. Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change, is founder and co-director of the uni- versity’s Paleoecological Environ- mental Assessment and Research Lab. Considered the world’s pre- mier paleolimnology training grounds, this lab addresses aquatic issues ranging from the impact of sewage and fertilizer run-off on lakes and rivers to the impact of acidic deposition and other con- taminants on freshwater life, and climate change. He’s a proud alumnus (ArtsSci’80) and current Queen’s parent – his son is in first year. After graduating, Dr. Woolf earned a doctorate at Oxford and returned to Queen’s as a post-doc- toral fellow. He specializes in early modern British cultural history and in the history of historical thought and writing both in Britain and globally. Dr. Woolf will succeed Principal Tom Williams, who has led the uni- versity since last May. “It’s been a very rewarding ex- perience serving as principal of this wonderful institution,” said Princi- pal Williams. “I will be working with Dr. Woolf in the months to come, and will do everything I can to make the transition seamless for him and the entire Queen’s com- munity.” Dr. Woolf was appointed by the Board of Trustees on the unani- mous recommendation of a Joint Board/Senate Advisory Committee to select the next principal. “On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to welcome Dr. Woolf “Queen’s is still home, and I am both thrilled and humbled by the opportunity to return as principal.”

Federal investment in research a positive step in hard times: V-PBy CELIA RUSSELLNew federal spending in the re-search sector announced in the re-cent budget will help keep Canadaon the leading edge, says Vice Prin-cipal (Research) Kerry Rowe.

“The $750 million injectioninto the Canada Foundation for In-novation (CFI) will support world-class research in various areas ofstrength, and place this country ina position of leadership for researchand development,” says Dr. Rowe.

The government has also bud-geted $87.5 million for CanadaGraduate Scholarships and $3.5million for internships in scienceand business, as well as $2 billionto repair and expand facilities atpost-secondary institutions.

“We applaud the $2 billion in-frastructure support,” says Dr.Rowe, who added that it is impor-tant for the government to get thismoney to universities in a timelyfashion.

After a recent five-year re-view of priorities by the three coun-cils, each was required to returnfive per cent of their annual budg-ets to the federal government forreinvestment.

Dr. Rowe says it’s not known yetwhat the government will do withthe money.

“With this commitment to theknowledge economy, we look for-ward to hearing how the govern-ment will address the issues ofproviding research funds throughthe granting councils.”

Pressure on the granting coun-cils is mounting. Although the re-search funding pie has grown

steadily over the last several years,more and more researchers arecompeting for a piece of it.

Many Ontario universities havedone significant hiring. In addi-tion, a large number of retired fac-ulty continue to conduct researchand get funding. Although these re-tirees are doing excellent work, aretaking on graduate students andare essentially working for free, thisaffects the prospects of younger re-searchers, and their ability to at-tract graduate students, says Dr.Rowe.

It is in the country’s best inter-ests that younger as well as older re-searchers are funded, so there aremore opportunities for graduatestudents, who in turn can take ad-vantage of the new graduate schol-arship funding, says Dr. Rowe.Investments in graduate scholar-ships are important because globaldemand for advanced degree hold-ers is rising at an unprecedentedrate in the knowledge economy.

“However, there is no extramoney going to the research coun-cils to fund the research that thesestudents are going to do,” he says.

QUIC is seeking volunteers fromRAQ and the Kingston communityto participate in three specific pro-grams designed to support studentsfrom abroad as they become morefamiliar with the city. Volunteersare needed for the annual IncomeTax clinic, with training to begin atthe end of February. English Lan-guage Support (ELS) volunteers arealso needed to spend 1-2 hours perweek offering either one-on-one as-sistance or volunteering with con-

“When people cease being em-ployees of the university they stillhave an interest in the success ofthe institution and of the people at-tending the institution,” said Ms.Anderson.

“It is important for students tosee evidence that Queen’s is a com-munity that reaches beyond thetime that you’re here as a studentspecifically, or as a staff person.Your community membershipdoesn’t retire with you.”

QUIC has an average of 300 vol-unteers that help international stu-dents adjust to their lives abroad.

The Kingston branch of theQueen’s University Alumni Associ-ation (QUAA) has provided signifi-cant support to the group byfinding furniture and other items

for students. QUAA also hosts anannual party in December with theOffice of the Dean of Student Af-fairs to help students who are alonefor the holidays network with oth-ers and find out what local eventsare taking place over the holidayseason.

In addition to coordinating pro-grams to help international stu-dents, QUIC encourages studentsto become engaged in the commu-nity by volunteering with organi-zations such as Martha’s Table or totutor younger students.

Ms. Anderson considers the col-laboration between QUIC and RAQto be a valuable contribution to theprograms because it helps studentsfrom far away feel they are not onlyQueen’s students, but also mem-bers of the broader community.“Students appreciate it; it’s mean-ingful and they feel welcomed, andimportant. They feel that their suc-cess as students or as researchershere matters to more than justthemselves,” she said.

“In the past, we have taught thestudents the tarantella at the JohnDeutsch University Centre. It wasmainly first- and second-years, butnow it has broadened. The studentsare definitely the variable in howthe club is run, but the main goalstays the same.”

This year, the club has dedicatedsome meetings to watching movieswith subtitles so that all memberscan fully understand the movie. Re-cently, members watched “Go-morra,” a new film that deals withfive separate stories of Italians af-fected by an organized crime ring.

Other weeks, group memberslisten to underappreciated Italianmusic, and read the lyrics aloud to-gether. They have also sampled Ital-ian cuisine.

Led by Cristiana Zaccagninoand Maria Laura Mosco, professorsin the Department of Spanish andItalian, the club includes under-graduate, graduate students, andprofessors – all from different grad-uating years and faculties.

Deanna Mason, a PhD candi-date in Victorian Literature, fell inlove with the language when shefirst visited Italy at the age of 16.

“Other than taking just one yearof Italian, I have no background inthe language whatsoever. Now, I tryto keep up with it. The Italian Clublets you get over your inhibitions.It’s a very comfortable environ-ment here for me to speak. It’s greatto listen to native speakers.”

No prior knowledge of Italian isrequired to join – just the desire tolearn, says Professor Zaccagnino.

“The Italian Club is a welcom-ing environment for people of alllevels of Italian who want to dis-cuss and know more about the Ital-ian language and culture,” she says.

“Learning to speak Italian is justlike when you are a child learningto speak for the first time,” saysCristina Caracchini, a professor inthe Spanish and Italian depart-ment. “You hear people talk, startto read and eventually you pick it

A recent meeting included areading aloud of two recipes, ri-tortelli d’uova and salame dolce – achocolate cake shaped like a salami.Professor Zaccagnino brought in asalame dolce she had made athome for the club members to sam-ple. When they took turns readingthe recipes, they would stop to ex-plain difficult words and pronunci-ations.

If a new student comes to ameeting the club is welcoming.They make sure to include new stu-dents without putting them on thespot and offer an opportunity forthem to contribute if they wish to.

They also discuss topics that aredifferent from those discussed in atypical classroom setting, says Pro-fesssor Mosco.

“We fight stereotypes of Italianculture. We show the diversitywithin the language, such as thedifferent dialects and languagehabits,” she says.

The topics range from debates toplayful jokes, so that club memberscan get acquainted with Italian hu-mour.

“A lot of people don’t under-stand the way that Italians makejokes. We are quite ironic, and inthe Italian Club we make sure thatthey get to see it,” laughs ProfessorCaracchini.

If you’ve never been to Washington D.C., it’s like this. Imagine every cliché of big, bold America, cast it in thick, thick stone,

and drop it onto a baffling maze of grids and diagonally crosscuttingthroughways. Keep it low to the ground and looking, for all intents, in-destructible and immortal. Everywhere you look your vision is guided bymonuments, massive avenues, and the palpable residue of global power.It’s crushing. It wants you to fear it. To summarize a conversation my part-ner and I had after we went to the inauguration, Ottawa is tea and cook-ies and Washington is black coffee… thrown in your face.

Now imagine a ceremony on scale with this massive, imposing city.This was the day of President Barack Obama’s inauguration. It began witha four-hour wait at a security checkpoint, being mashed and jostled by athousand others every bit as eager to get through. When you got in, thou-sands of state troopers, military personnel, local police, heck, even forestrycops, lined Pennsylvania Avenue, evenly dispersed in front of the crowds,keeping keen eyes on everyone.

Down the avenue we saw flag after flag after flag waving from thebrassy, eagle-tipped street posts, and while we were waiting for the paradeto begin the whole thing sometimes took on a surreal aspect of living ina perfectly ordered, synchronized,repeating universe. When the pa-rade actually started, you watcheda dozen different police and mili-tary bands strutting along with per-fect timing and very silly hatsbefore you finally got your two sec-ond glimpse of The Beast, PresidentObama’s new, madly decked-outpresidential limo. We were luckyenough to get a smile and a wave through the armoured glass and I flashedhim the peace sign with a very serious face, what I thought to be an ap-propriate communiqué from the Great North.

Was it worth the 800-kilometre drive, the sleep deprivation, the sub-zero temperatures, and hours of waiting? Of course.

For all the day’s dreams of perfect order and the perfect historical mo-ment, though, I do have to say something bigger escaped and that’s myfavourite part. Everywhere we went, there were reporters trying franticallyto get the big story. One from ABC interviewed some Canadians standingnearby us, and her big question was, “Do you kind of wish you were Amer-ican?” Caught in the headlights, the girls said “yes” but – to butcher ametaphor – I can’t blame them for getting swept up in the tides. Theclichés were flying fast and furious, but mercifully they couldn’t even

begin to get at what was going on. That reporter and her crew walked awaya little crestfallen, because really, what was the big story? Was it about theend of the Bush era or even neo-conservatism? Was it about the first blackpresident of a country founded on black slavery? Was it about the end topolitical apathy, or a new era of respectfulness between the U.S.A. andworld at large? Take your pick. I’d like to think it was about a couple of to-tally in love Canadian grad students who drove down from Queen’s andhad a blast, but I somehow think that one will escape the history books.

I also somehow think a lot of people probably had similar experiencesof the day. When I posted the Facebook photos, besides the usual smat-tering of hipster cracks, a lot of people both thanked me for my versionand told me about theirs.

The day wasn’t just about the impressive architecture of an event, itwas about people from everywhere moving in and out of that architec-ture, and I suspect it will continue to be about that. My friend Brooke, forinstance, told me about how she wished she could have visited her sisterin D.C. for the big day. Another, Heather, told me about watching thespeech and procession from a coffee shop in Indiana. Yes, it was cool tobe right there, to holler support for Obama, but the astonishing flow ofideas in and out of Washington, I believe, rings much louder. At least forthe time being people were, and are, talking about big things, whicheverones they deem important.

Perhaps the wonderful confusion of the day was something inadver-tently orchestrated by the aptly named Secret Service, which was techni-cally running the show, and yet that doesn’t make the experiences of themany any less legitimate. Really: take away the rest of us and you’d justhave a guy talking to himself, grandly, and going for a very slow car ride.

In fact, I think that’s why afterwards I veered away from the officialstory of the day. It’s also why I sincerely hope that my version in no wayneglects yours.

The broader scope of academic integrity

students at Memorial Universitymust complete the Graduate Re-search Integrity Program. The na-tional granting councils, CanadianInstitute of Health Research, Natu-ral Sciences and Engineering Re-search Council and the SocialSciences and Humanities ResearchCouncil have also issued a tri-coun-cil policy statement on integrity inresearch and scholarship, and theCanadian government recentlyformed the Canadian Research In-tegrity Committee to review re-search-integrity policies around theworld.

Moreover, the First World Con-ference on Research Integrity wasconvened in 2007 by the EuropeanScience Foundation to bring to-gether researchers, administrators,

government officials, and journaleditors from some of the most pres-tigious journals such as Nature andScience to address ways of fosteringresponsible research.

It is understandable why aca-demic integrity and research in-tegrity are often thought of asbeing somewhat distinct. Academicintegrity (AI) is commonly consid-ered in the context of undergradu-ate education. There are goodreasons for this; most students atour universities are undergraduatesand most of our teaching is done inthis environment. This distinctionbecomes blurred, however, whenconsidering the three core issuesmentioned above – fabrication, fal-sification, and plagiarism. Mostwould agree that these three issuesalso play a central role in the AI ed-ucation of our undergraduates. Theline becomes even more ambigu-ous because undergraduates con-duct research too – for theses andprojects.

In a previous article, I men-tioned that AI is at the heart of theuniversity’s mission, pertaining di-rectly to the quality and reputationof the entire university and provid-ing a common foundation uponwhich our teaching and research ef-forts are built. Supporting this no-tion, Queen’s Senate adopted an

Academic Integrity Policy State-ment in 2006 which states that ac-ademic integrity is constituted bythe five core fundamental values ofhonesty, trust, fairness, respect andresponsibility – values that applyequally well in both the teachingand research environments. Assuch, academic integrity truly en-compasses a much broader scopethan just undergraduate educationand is also applicable to the schol-arly endeavours of graduate stu-dents, research staff, and facultymembers. That is, the principles ofacademic integrity should apply toall members of the university com-munity.

At Queen’s, initiatives are beingdeveloped to foster AI in research,including a tutorial for graduatestudents and a new, innovative pol-icy on research integrity.

Growing interest in this topicfrom various internal and externalstakeholders including the govern-ment, industry, publishers, and thepublic can only serve to furtherpromote best practices and encour-age productive discussion in thiskeystone of our core academic mis-sion.

INTEGRITY ISSUES

Previously, this column has dis-cussed academic integrity (AI) in anundergraduate context, but whatabout with respect to the rest of theuniversity community? Integrity is-sues involving graduate studentsand researchers can be quite differ-ent to those typically involving un-dergraduates. Such issues includethe use of inappropriate researchmethods, poor data manage-ment/storage, misuse of researchfunds, or unethical authorship/co-authorship practices, and as a re-sult, many universities haveseparate policies on research in-tegrity (or “research misconduct”).

Three core issues that com-monly surface in research-integritycases are the fabrication of data, thefalsification of data, and plagiarism,and typically involve such practicesas selectively excluding data fromfurther analysis, misinterpretingdata to obtain preconceived results,modifying digital images, and pro-ducing false results.

Indeed, the “big three” have

been at the heart of the most spec-tacular research-integrity cases inrecent times. For example, individ-ual cases involving the fabricationand falsification of data regardingthe creation of human embryonicstem cells through cloning, the cre-ation of an organic transistor (her-alded at the time as a potentialNobel-prize-winning break-through), and the metabolic effectsof nutrition and ageing to obtainmore than $3 million in researchgrant funds have made globalheadlines, brought shame to pres-tigious universities, and have se-verely harmed the credibility ofnational research agendas. The decision has been condemned by the American As-sociation of Museums, as well as the College Art Association, and itappears that while the museum will certainly close, the plan to sellthe complete collection may change.

Princeton adopts low tuition hikePrinceton University has taken a novel approach to ease the finan-cial burden felt by some of its students. Its trustees have approvedthe lowest percentage tuition increase since 1966, as well as an in-crease in its financial aid budget. Tuition will rise by only 2.9 percent, while undergraduate scholarship funds will go up by 13 percent. These decisions reflect an awareness of the changing circum-stances of many students: this year 56 per cent of freshman at theuniversity will rely on student aid, up from 38 per cent in 2001.

Bill forces York teachers back to workThe Ontario government passed legislation Jan. 29 forcing teachersat York University back to work after an 85-day strike. Reactions oncampus were mixed: many students were glad to get back to school,while others expressed concern at a bill that could have repercus-sions for workers’ rights across the province. The faculty strike wasthe third-longest in Canadian history, and saw 3,400 workers walkoff the job on Nov. 6, affecting at least 45,000 students. The workstoppage means that the academic year will be extended, whichmeans less time for summer work for students, many of whomcount on the employment to create income and gain experience.

The National Council of Universities stated thatthe decree would threaten academic autonomy and open the doorfor arbitrary local decisions which in turn could emphasize in-equalities between schools, staff, and classes.

England shelves fee decisionEngland’s parliament will not finish its promised review of the capon tuition fees in the immediate future. Some university leaders arepressing for the cap to be lifted, allowing them to raise fees from£3000 to £6000-7000, in light of declining public funding for uni-versities. When fees were set at £3000 in 2004, ministers vowed toreview the cap this year. A decision to lift the cap may not be pop-ular in an election year. It now appears that the review will likely getunderway in 2009, but is not likely to finish until 2010 – after thenext election.

LetterIn praise of Queen’s own “shot in the arm” The Queen’s community will be de-lighted to learn that Canada Posthas just issued a stamp commemo-rating the life of Rosemary Brownas part of its celebration of BlackHistory Month. Ms. Brown servedon Queen’s Board of Trustees from1990 to 1997.

As one of her many friends andcountless admirers, I can imagineher whole-hearted support for thestudent-led initiative to name abuilding at the university in hon-our of Robert Sutherland. I ask my-self, which building would sheprefer – Law or Policy Studies? Idon’t know, but she certainlywould have insisted that RobertSutherland’s name stand alone, justas he did when he bequeathed his

estate to his alma mater in 1878,thus preserving the autonomy ofthe university. So, should it be theLaw building, Sir John A. would po-litely doff his hat and move on,content with the recognition thatKingston and her downtownstreets have paid him.

greater, and the effect of our ac-tions will be deeper and longer-last-ing the more profoundly weexplore these problems with thetools that define an institution ofhigher education. The authority topronounce on matters of moral, so-cial or political virtue is not one ofthese tools – at least within a con-text of critical thought and respectfor academic freedom.

Many projects already underway to address racism and intoler-ance at Queen’s are appropriate inour academic context. A panel onDiversity, Anti-Racism and Equity(DARE) has recently been estab-lished as a forum for discussion andexpert analysis of these issues, aswell as to serve as a point of con-fluence for different initiatives di-rected to the same end.

Students have the opportunityto explore with panel membersquestions of race and intolerance ina manner detached from the im-mediate necessity of politicalchoice – a process which should ul-timately improve the soundness ofwhatever choices they make in thefuture.

Given all the other initiativesunder way that have been de-scribed in previous Diversitycolumns, there is every reason to beoptimistic about inclusiveness anddiversity at Queen’s in the years tocome.

Our community is actively deal-ing with this challenge in a mannermore forthright, comprehensiveand thoughtful than at most of oursister institutions. The process wasdifficult last term, and it will nodoubt be so in the coming year.The academic drift of our approachmay at times seem insufficient tothe immediate challenges of speechand behaviour day-to-day, but weneed to find ways of dealing withthose challenges that do not com-promise our broader academic val-ues. Only by doing the latter willwe be able to move forward withoptimism and commitment.

It is only February, and already theannouncement of Queen’s newprincipal and the AMS elections arebehind us. It seems the whole cam-pus is looking forward in anticipa-tion of change, and hoping thatwith change will come solutions toour most intractable problems. Wereflect on the fall term, its chal-lenges and controversies, almostunwillingly, for to do so must tem-per our hopefulness, recommendcircumspection, realism and cau-tion.

Some of the issues confrontingour community last term werehugely significant. Between theemerging fiscal crisis and the polar-ization of the student body aroundissues of religious and racial intol-erance, we were forced to addressfundamental questions about theviability of our mission and the na-ture of our identity as an institu-tion. In this new year,notwithstanding the reinvigorationof our leadership at all levels, thesesame challenges continue.

How we conceptualize and enactracial, religious and cultural inclu-siveness remains an urgent matter,and not necessarily because wehave fallen behind our sister insti-tutions in this regard. How we suc-ceed or fail in addressing this matterwill profoundly affect the overallquality and reputation of Queen’sas a place of higher learning.

In the midst of controversy andpassionate debate provoked lastterm by remarks by the president ofthe Arts and Science UndergraduateSociety, many students confessedto feeling disillusioned. Whetherthey felt the president’s remarkswere Islamophobic or not, manyrealized that their community,hitherto admired and certainlysomewhat idealized, was politicallyno less heterodox than society atlarge, that even on a matter thatthey thought was unambiguous,no consensus of opinion existed.Interestingly, instead of an attitudeof tolerance, this insight in manycases and on all sides gave rise tocalls for the university to interveneand bring about consensus by de-cree.

Stanley Fish, the distinguishedAmerican professor and intellec-tual, has recently called this cate-gorical imperative of the university“academicizing.” “To academicizean issue,” he writes, “is to detach itfrom those contexts where it posesa choice of what to do or how tolive… and insert it into an aca-demic context where it invites acertain kind of interrogation.”

Celebrate Darwin Day The Department of Biology is par-ticipating in a worldwide celebra-tion to commemorate CharlesDarwin, the father of evolution.Thursday Feb. 12 marks both the200th anniversary of Darwin’s birthand the 150th anniversary of thepublication of his groundbreakingwork, “The Origin of Species.”

The Darwin Day program atQueen’s begins with a series ofshort lectures about evolutionarybiology, followed by a receptionand poster session highlighting re-cent work by graduate studentsthat relates to Darwin’s theory ofevolution.

Interprofessionalhealth care promotedQueen’s and Kingston researcherscollectively garnered eight grantswhen the Ontario InterprofessionalHealth Collaborative (OC) met lastmonth in Toronto. During thethree-day conference, participantsdiscussed recent developments andpractices in interprofessional care,which involves a collaborative ef-fort between health providers andpatients and their families to man-age care.

Response to the conference,which attracted more than 300 par-ticipants from government, the ed-ucation sector, and the healthcarepractice community, was excep-tional, says Nursing professor andOC Project Lead Jennifer Medves.“We will continue to build on themomentum and enthusiasm to ad-vocate for even greater uptake ofinterprofessional education andpractice throughout Ontario.”

The OC is a loose coalition link-ing individuals teaching, practicingand researching interprofessionalpractice and education across On-tario. It was established in 2007with funding from the Interprofes-sional Care/Education Fund (ICEF).

Consulting programawarded grantThe university’s DevelopmentalConsulting Program has received a$293,050 grant to fund Phase II oftheir Disabilities DevelopmentalConsulting Program (DDCP).

Launched in 2008, the DDCP isan interdisciplinary project whoseobjectives include improving clini-cal services for patients with devel-opmental disabilities, as well asexpanding educational opportuni-ties and encouraging research inthe field.

The funding comes fromHealthForceOntario, a governmentinitiative dedicated to improvingOntario healthcare.

An academic and consultingprogram, the Developmental Con-sulting Program has been in opera-tion since 1985. It has providedassistance in a variety of areas, in-cluding rehabilitation and mentalhealth.

Researchers have widely be-lieved that the organic compound,allicin – which gives the pungentvegetable its aroma and flavour –acts as an antioxidant. But untilnow it hasn’t been clear how allicinworks, or how it stacks up com-pared to more common antioxi-dants such as Vitamin E andcoenzyme Q10, which stop thedamaging effects of radicals.

Garlic has commonly been usedas a natural health product to treatailments including high choles-terol, and in the prevention of can-cer. Chemistry professor DerekPratt and his research team werecurious to find the mecha-nism behindgarlic’s po-tency.

“ Wedidn’tunder-standh o wgar l icc o u l dcontainsuch ane f f i c i e n tantioxidant, since itdidn’t have a substantial amountof the types of compounds usuallyresponsible for high antioxidant ac-tivity in plants, such as the fla-vanoids found in green tea or

obese adults, Queen’s kinesiologistshave discovered.

The new study is co-authored byPhD graduate Lance Davidson andKinesiology and Health Studiesprofessor Robert Ross, director of

the university’s Centre for ObesityResearch and Educations (CORE).They found that seniors with sev-eral trademarks of developing dis-ease – including a waistcircumference of 40 inches in menor 35 inches in women – whotrained both aerobically and withweights made significant healthgains compared to control groups.

People who trained aerobicallylost abdominal fat, maintainedmuscle and became over 30 percent more insulin sensitive (lessprone to developing diabetes).Those who lifted weights gainedsignificant amounts of muscle andexcelled in physical function testsin which poor performance wouldindicate disability. Seniors who didboth treadmill and weightliftingthree times a week showed thegreatest gains in both insulin sensi-tivity and functional fitness.

“Granted, the participants had adedicated crew of energetic Queen’sstudents and graduates to motivateand encourage them, but these sen-iors did all the exercise them-selves,” says Dr. Davidson, who iscurrently pursuing post-doctoralstudies at Columbia University.“Thanks to their efforts, the mes-sage that moderate exercise – evenwithout dietary modification – re-verses age-related disease or disabil-ity can now be disseminated toclinicians and health-care profes-sionals.”

The five-year study was com-pleted with the help of Hotel DieuHospital and Kingston GeneralHospital, Dr. Davidson adds.

CBC profiles Baders’ enduring love affair By STEPHANIE EARPBefore Herstmonceux Castle was agift to Queen’s, it was a gift to Is-abel Bader, from her husband Al-fred.

Alfred Bader is well-respected atthe university for his generous giftsto his alma mater, but this Thurs-day, another aspect of Alfred and Is-abel’s lives will unfold on CBC. Asone of the featured couples in thedocumentary ‘Love, Interrupted’,Isabel and Alfred relate their tu-multuous love story, which beganin 1949. They met on a ship cross-ing the Atlantic, and after ninedays, Alfred proposed. But they didnot marry until 1982. The docu-mentary explains what happenedin between and what forces keptthe lovers apart for so long.

Producer and writer Alison Arm-strong first heard about the Baders’love story in 2003 and decided toverify it. She found Alfred quiteopen to discussing his past, whileIsabel was more reticent.

“For all of Alfred’s success, this

is the defining narrative of his life,his love for Isabel,” Ms. Armstrongsays. “When I was at Queen’s work-ing on the film, Alfred was talkingabout what should go in his obitu-ary. He said ‘I want to be remem-bered as Isabel’s lover.’”

Love, Interrupted, which wasfilmed partly at Queen’s with thehelp of the Film and Media StudiesDepartment, is part of Ms. Arm-strong’s ongoing interest in storiesof long-lost love. The Baders’ storywill also be included in her upcom-ing book on the topic. “Many cou-ples of that time were broken apartby race, class or religion. It’s tribal-ism. Many people were not allowedto date outside their race or reli-gion. A lot of pain is caused whenpeople can’t marry the person theylove,” she says.

The In-ternational Association of Universi-ties (IAU) defines cross-borderhigher education as “a multifacetedphenomenon which includes themovement of people (students andfaculty), providers (higher educa-tion institutions with a physicaland/or virtual presence in a hostcountry), and academic content(such as the development of jointcurricula). These activities takeplace in the context of interna-tional development cooperation,academic exchanges and linkages,as well as commercial initiatives.”

In 2004, in light of the increaseddiversification in the provision ofhigher education, the IAU, the As-sociation of Universities and Col-leges of Canada (AUCC), theAmerican Council on Education(ACE) and the Council for HigherEducation Accreditation (CHEA),drafted a statement of principles toguide the adoption of cross-borderhigher education. After widespreadconsultations with member associ-ations throughout the world, thedraft statement was adopted and

Higher education no longer the exception • contribute to communities’ eco-nomic, social and cultural wellbeing;• strengthen the higher educationcapacity of developing countries toensure worldwide equity;• develop learners’ capacity for crit-ical thinking so that they might en-gage in responsible citizenshiplocally, nationally and internation-ally;• increase accessibility for qualifiedstudents who are in financial need;• ensure equally high standards ofquality regardless of where it is de-livered;• be accountable to all stakeholdersincluding students, governmentsand the public;• facilitate the international mobil-ity of faculty and students; and• communicate clear and full infor-mation about the education beingprovided.

The statement also recommendsspecific actions that should betaken by universities, colleges andother public, private or for-profitproviders of higher education; bynon-governmental associations

worldwide; and by national gov-ernments and their intergovern-mental organizations.

How does Queen’s measure upto these principles in providingwhat we claim to be an interna-tional quality education? Do ourcurricula, policies, and practicesmeet the cross-border higher edu-cation standards that have been en-dorsed by the AUCC? Does theeducation we offer really “engagethe world’ in the ways articulatedin this statement of principles?

As we prepare for the spring2009 Cross-Faculty TeachingForum on the theme of “Interna-tionalizing the Curriculum,” let usreflect on these principles and therecommended actions to deter-mine what roles we might play, in-dividually and collectively, inrealizing the potential of qualitycross-border higher education forenhancing equity and access forthe common good.

“Sharing Quality Higher Educa-tion Across Borders: A Statementon Behalf of Higher Education In-stitutions Worldwide” describes aset of principles which the signato-ries believe should guide not onlycross-border initiatives by highereducation institutions, but alsopolicies and negotiations by gov-ernments. The principles includethe need for higher educationacross borders to:

One of the major changes in highereducation over the last half centuryhas been the phenomenon of mas-sification. Previously, higher educa-tion was the domain and assumedprerogative of the gifted and, forthe most part, the elite; those whocould afford to pay for it.

Not anymore. With the rise ofthe knowledge economy, knowl-edge has replaced physical resourcesas the main source of economicgrowth and power. Higher educa-tion has become not only more de-sirable but absolutely essential forpersonal advancement. Participa-tion in higher education has be-come the universal norm ratherthan the exception. Moreover, in-creasing globalization and the con-comitant competition amonginstitutions for students have madeit possible for almost everyone whowants a post-secondary education togain access to one.

As the demand for higher edu-cation has increased worldwide, wehave witnessed a simultaneousgrowth of higher educationproviders, new methods of delivery,

Once upon a time, electronic wastedisposal procedures on campusranged from stacking broken print-ers in a storage closet to lining hall-ways with decommissionedmonitors in the hopes that passingstudents might carry them away. Asenvironmental awareness and con-cern over the human impact on cli-mate change grows, a new phrasehas entered the lexicon: green IT.The concept includes everythingfrom how we dispose of electronicwaste to maximizing energy effi-ciencies with our computing re-sources, and it has come toQueen’s.

Last year, Physical Plant Services(PPS) disposed of 35 tons of elec-tronic waste. Traditionally, thiswould all have gone to landfill, butin more recent years, Queen’s haspartnered with a firm which pro-vides recycling of parts and heavymetals and repurposes plastics. Itcosts the university about $45,000a year to dispose of this waste, themajority of which is spent on trans-porting it to the recycling centre inBrampton, Ont. In the future, thismay change. “Electronic waste isactually increasing in value,” notesIvan MacKeen, PPS business man-ager. “We are exploring ways to off-set some of our transportation coststhrough the sale of our electronicwaste.”

However, the real challenge isfinding enough storage on campusto accommodate the collection vol-ume that’s required for provincialtransport. Currently the waste ishoused at the west campus storagebuilding, but Mr. MacKeen saysthat new storage solutions arebeing pursued. “Because of ourstorage constraints, we still sendthree times as much electronic

Implementing such far-reachingstrategies can be challenging. Thefear that sustainability initiativeswill stretch already-taut budgetsand compete with other campusinitiatives can inhibit action. Indi-viduals may believe that the crisisis so great their efforts will make nodifference. However, the sense ofurgency to address these issues, par-ticularly amongst younger people,is a compelling force for action.Queen’s recognizes that sustain-ability is an ongoing and key com-mitment, and created the Queen’sSustainability Office in spring2008. EDUCAUSE, a non-profit associ-ation whose mission is to advancehigher education by promoting theintelligent use of information tech-nology, released a paper last monthon The Role of IT in Campus Sus-tainability Efforts. It proposes a va-riety of IT sustainability strategies:reducing waste (for example,through less printing); reducingstaff travel by encouraging work athome enabled by collaborative on-line tools and virtual privacy net-works; and promoting alternativeeducational strategies such as on-line course offerings, web confer-encing and video streaming. Many enviro-conscious technol-ogy users have adopted simple con-servation strategies such asrecycling ink cartridges, double-sided printing and turning off com-puter monitors when not in use.Understanding the direct impact ofIT on environmental carbon levels,and implementing more compre-hensive strategies to reduce theseemissions, are increasingly an areaof focus in educational settings.These larger efforts fall within thefield of sustainability, most com-monly defined as “meeting theneeds of the present without com-

The Offices of the Principal and Vice-Principal (Academic) have created a new panel to explore issues of Diversity, Anti-Racism and Equity (DARE)on campus. The Limits of School ReformIn the United States, the primary impact of educational reform efforts on elementary andsecondary schooling has been at the periphery rather than the core of the school system.This lecture explores the reasons for this phenomenon, drawing on the progressive education movement as a case in point. One set of reasons is organizational (the loosecoupling of the school system and weak administrative control over instruction) and another is educational (the peculiar nature of teaching as a professional practice).

DAVID F. LABAREEStanford UniversityDavid F. Labaree is a professor in the Stanford University School of Education (USA). Hereceived his Ph.D. in sociology in 1983 from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the history and sociology of American education. Books include: The Making ofan American High School (1988); How to Succeed in School Without Really Learning (1997);The Trouble with Ed Schools (2004); and Education, Markets, and the Public Good (2006). Hewas president of the U.S. History of Education Society (2004-2005), vice president for Division F (history of education) of the American Educational Research Association(2003-06), and member of the AERA executive board (2004-06).

A Footnote on HealthHow to bring new life into a relationship

It’s not surprising that as people get morecomfortable and complacent within relation-ships, they often make less of an effort. Whatis surprising though is how a few simplesteps can help you give your relationshipthat breath of fresh air it needs.

Be thoughtful. Romance can be about ac-tively showing that your mate is a priority.From forwarding your mate an interestingarticle, to making chicken soup for a sickpartner; daily acts of kindness and con-sideration are just as important, andoften more appreciated, than grand ro-

mantic gestures.

Listen. Instead of robotically “going through the motions,” take a fewmoments out of your day to really listen to what your partner has to say.Ask questions to show you’re interested, and show empathy if your mateis feeling stressed or worried about issues around the family or work. Ifthere’s anything you can do to improve the matter, and they ask for youradvice, offer to help out. Always make time to lend your emotional sup-port to the situation.

Create a new ritual. Get reacquainted with your mate by carving out aspecial time every week to enjoy each other’s company. Rituals, e.g. “datenights,” are a great way to promote communication and a sense of shar-ing, fun and romance.

Celebrate! Remind your partner often about the great job he or she isdoing as a mate and as a person. But don’t just offer praise – celebrateyour mate’s achievements!

Let the small stuff go. Is that towel on the bathroom floor such a bigdeal? Or, is your mate’s penchant for bad puns really worth fighting over?There are lots of differences to work through in relationships, so save yourenergy for the ones that really matter. People don’t really change thatmuch so it’s important to accept your partner for who they are.

Remember how it all began. Reminisce with your partner about your ro-mance’s early days including how you met and how you knew your matewas “the one.” Sometimes in the rush of day-to-day life, it’s easy to takeyour relationship for granted. Going over those long-past details can helpremind you about what attracted you to each other in the first place andrekindle those romantic feelings.

Parkinson’s disease researchThe Centre for Neuroscience Studiesis conducting two studies of deficitsin eye movement control withParkinson’s disease. The departmentis looking for healthy adult volun-teers age 50-70, without Parkinson’sdisease, or a history of neurologicalor psychiatric disorders, who are flu-ent in English. Participating in onestudy requires a single visit to theQueen’s MRI facility, and will takeabout two hours. The second studydoes not involve an MRI, and willtake one hour.
