“Daniel Boone was a man. Yes, a big man.”

I was 10 when I first heard that opening theme song line from the Daniel Boone TV series starring Fess Parker. It was not because in 1964 our household only received the local NBC station on aluminum foil flagged rabbit ears that it became my favorite show. It was many of my friends’ favorite and one of the networks biggest hits in the ’60s.

And I didn’t remember the hullaballoo over Disney’s Davy Crockett movie since I was only a year old when it was released. But I do remember wearing coonskin hats with all of my kindergarten pals – still the rage years after the film. Before Avatar, before Daniel Boone, the Beatles, even Elvis – Davy Crockett took the country by storm. Davy Crockett was also big – really big.

It was November, 2004 when Crawford Malone Fine Wine & Spirits began representing Fess Parker Winery in several states. I checked into the Fess Parker Inn in Los Olivas and was looking forward to my first meeting with Fess’s daughter Ashley and her husband Tim, but had no expectations of meeting a childhood hero. However, at 6am, as I opened the lobby doors to head out for a jog in the brisk Pacific fog, I found myself face to face – actually looking up – at 6'5" Daniel Boone. For a moment I was speechless, and then he said in Daniel Boone’s voice, “You must be Crawford,” and asked if I had time to have breakfast with him. He was kidding, right?

He told me about growing up in Texas, about his pal who went to California before him to work as an extra in the many Western movies of the day. The pal told Fess they were paying $50 if you could ride a horse and $100 if you would fall off. Fess said he’d fall off horses all day for $100 and headed west. He told me about falling in love with the rolling hills of Santa Barbara and becoming a real estate developer believing that others would see the beauty of the area as he did. He was right. He talked about purchasing vineyards, initially as investment, but then learning about and developing a passion for the wines. He told me about watching with fascination and pride as his son Eli became one of the finest and most talented winemakers in the appellation.

As he talked it seemed like I had known him for a long time and then realized that the TV Daniel Boone’s gentle and wise demeanor was not an act. I could see his influence behind the ease and intelligence that permeates the highly successful Fess Parker Winery.

Daniel Boone was a big man. And so was Fess Parker – not just his tall, lanky frame, but his warmth, his fine vision, his energy and passion, and most of all his heart.

Dear Marcella,

I am writing as one of millions of Texans who grew up idolizing your beloved husband. Fess Parker was an icon of American culture, but I consider him a Texan through and through. Born and educated in the Lone Star State, he embodied that independent spirit that sets our state apart. Like most baby boomers, I grew up watching Fess on the big screen and, when our family finally got one, on the television. I was convinced that his Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone characters lived the way a man should: with quiet courage and a commitment to the simple values that made America great.

by Verlyn Klinkenborg I don’t remember a single episode of Davy Crockett, nor did I own a coonskin cap. As for the famous theme song, it tends to wander away on its own, erratically, once it gets rolling in my head. But I remember Fess Parker. Any account of masculinity, for a certain generation, is incomplete without Mr. Parker, who died last week at age 85. In my memory, he embodies an inexplicable authenticity. It was something inherent in Mr. Parker.Partly, I think, it was the angularity of the man, who

seemed as lean as his flintlock rifle. And it was the way his right eye seemed to be slipping downward as his wry smile slipped upward. He had a solid frontier squint that every kid I knew tried to imitate when we looked into the faraway. What tied it all together was Mr. Parker’s voice, less Tennessee than Texas and carrying an astounding freight of respectability for such a soft backwoods twang. Whatever else he was to American lore, Davy Crockett was always Fess Parker.

Last June my niece was married in Santa Barbara. One of our family outings was a lovely trip to the Fess Parker Winery. We enjoyed not only the wine, but reminiscing about how much our older brother (who was unable to come) loved his Davy Crockett hat back in the ’50s!

We bought him some glasses, wine and a miniature coonskin hat as a wine-bottle topper. Last week we sent him the glasses and cap as gifts for his birthday. (Unfortunately we had consumed the wine!)

Yesterday he called to thank us and shared a hilarious story about the cap. It seems that when he opened the package the cap fell to the floor. Before he could retrieve it, his little dog Suzy snatched it up and scurried away!

He said there was no way she was going to give up her new toy! They have named the cap “animal” and decided to let her keep it! Pictures just had to be shared!

Loved our time at your winery and hope to return if we find ourselves in Santa Barbara again!

The water bottle is a workout staple, and certainly a good drink for those

who are trying to maintain a slender figure, but according to new research

women may gain less weight over time if they turn that water into wine.

Dr. Lu Wang from Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston followed nearly 20,000 healthy, middle-aged and older women.

Some weight gain was typical over the 13-year study period.

Women who started with a normal weight were less likely to gain extra pounds if they drank light to moderate amounts of alcohol.

That means no more than two to three servings of beer or wine each day.

The link was strongest for red wine.

While it’s true these women had healthy lifestyles overall, there seems to be something about the alcohol itself.

Women who didn’t drink any gained the most weight.

Rather than break bread with their wine, moderate drinkers also tended to eat smaller portions, cutting out carbs in particular.

The bottom line: If exercise is also a habit a little tipple could help tip the scales in your favor.
