FRIENDS GAZETTE
BOSSES at UK food watchdog,
the Food Standards Agency, have
agreed there is no need for further
clampdowns on the production
and sale of raw milk after a
comprehensive review.
Despite some pretty scary
scenarios painted by opposition
interests the agencys board this
month (July) agreed that the
current restrictions on the sale of
raw milk should remain in place
following the conclusions of the FSAs review of
raw drinking milk controls.
The decision has sparked hope in one of the
UKs main producers who is hoping it wont be
long before unpasteurised milk can be bought
from vending machines outside shops in the UK
as it can in other European countries.
Steve Hook, who started producing and
selling raw milk in 2007 and claims 40% of the
current UK market, said: If you look in the small
print which went to the board there are two
things which are striking which is that they
acknowledge that consumer demand for raw
milk is not being met.
And they said that for those producers who
have systems in place ensuring quality of raw
milk and are very progressive in the way they
deal with risk, could work with the FSA in the
future to widen their marketing outlets.
So there is the potential for working with the
FSA and demonstrating best practice that
might allow vending machines in the future.
The reviews conclusions accepted by the
board were that:
Your articles look at moral reasons for beingvegetarian or vegan which is a veryinteresting mix and unique . . .

Slimming franchise WeightWatchers has used this
award-winning recipe in a low-calorie version.
Serves two people
INGREDIENTS
pint milk
3.5 oz semolina
teaspoon dry mustard powder
teaspoon pepper
teaspoon salt
4 oz grated strong Cheddar cheese
a little vegetarian margarine
METHOD
Mix semolina, milk and seasoning in a non-stick
pan.
Bring to the boil, stirring, and cook for 3 minutes,
stirring constantly, until very thick. Stir in 2.5 oz
cheese and leave to cool.
Spread into a greased ovenproof dish so the
mixture is about three-quarters of an inch or an
inch thick, to suit your size dish.
Dot the top with 3 teaspoons margarine. Scatter
with remaining 1.5 oz cheese and bake for 20
minutes at gas mark 6 or 400F or 200C till golden
brown and sides crispy.
Serve hot.
the risk associated with raw
drinking milk consumption,
except for vulnerable groups, is
acceptable when appropriate
hygiene controls are applied
the current restriction on sales
of raw milk should remain in
place as there is uncertainty
that consumer protection can
be maintained if the market for
raw milk is expanded
risk communication could be
improved, particularly for
vulnerable groups, and
changes to the labelling
requirements are proposed to
reflect this.
Current restrictions allow Hook, who
operates from Sussex, to sell his milk on
three doorstep delivery rounds, 19
farmers markets in London every week
and also run a nationwide courier
delivery service accessed through the
internet on www.hookandson.co.uk.
It is a long game with the FSA in
terms of changing mindset. I believe
theres a lot of lobbying by the
pasteurising industry on the board. A
change of mindset will take a long time.
We are building the case for raw milk,
strongly. I also welcome any opportunity
for raw milk to be in the public debate
because I think the pasteurising industry
is very happy for it to be swept under the
carpet and to be besmirched.
Any opportunity for the facts to come
out is only ever good for raw milk, he
said.

AN AUSSIE CAMPAIGN to end factory
farming has gathered more than a quarter
of a million signatures.
Launched in October 2012 and
supported by top Aussie celebrities
including tennis hunk Pat Rafter,
makeitpossible.com aims to expose the
scandal that is factory farming.
In a heart-rendering video showing
sows in cages fitted exactly to their size so
that they cant even turn around and hens
with their feathers pecked off by other
hens because their wire prisons are too
small to house them, the campaign
appeals to the conscience of human
beings to change the world.
Lyn White, a former policewoman, who
started the campaign says in the video
that things that most humans are lucky
enough to take for granted like freedom,
sunshine, fresh air and exercise have
been denied to millions of living beings in
human care.

IF MOHAMMED CANT GO
TO THE MOUNTAIN . . .Guru plays cupid as lastminute switch bringsglittering Bollywood bashto doorstep of ashram
It was the wedding of the year, the decade even.
Bollywood screen heart throb Shahid Kapoor,
34, was tying the knot this month (July) with Mira
Rajput, a 21 year old student, in a glittering
occasion fit for royalty. Everyone who was
anyone was there. Established stars of Indian
cinema as well as starlets hoping to be seen in
the right place with the right people.
For months speculation in the press was rife. A
farmhouse in the bride's family home had been
prepared. But when reporters called they soon
found out they were on a wild goose chase.
The Times of India reports: "The wedding took
place at a farmhouse in Chhattarpur, which
belongs to Fortis Healthcare co-founder
Shivinder Mohan Singh. Shivinder and his
brother Malvinder are Radha Soami followers,
like Shahid and Mira's families. Contrary to
reports, the . . . ceremony didn't finally happen at
Mira's family's farmhouse but in another
farmhouse close to the Radha Soami Satsang
Beas ashram there."
Nithya Nair, writes in India.com, under a
picture of the couple with a mug-shot of the guru
superimposed between them, and a headline
which reads: "Here is how Radha Soami Satsang
Beas played cupid in the Mira-Sasha match."
He says: "The arranged match took everyone
by surprise. Did Kapoor let his family choose the
right girl for him or maybe the satang guru did it?"
Nair goes on: "Although none of the family
members openly speak about the daughter-in-
law, it is reported that Shahid met Mira while
attending a satsang meet[ing]. Both the families
follow the Radha Soami Satsang Beas and
attend the satsangs regular[ly].
And he continues: "Shahid Kapoor and father
Pankaj Kapoor are ardent followers of Radha
Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) sect. Mira Rajputs
family also shares similar beliefs and regularly
attend the meetings. It is reported that the leader
of the group, Gurinder Singh, suggested the
match and both families agreed to it."
As previously revealed in FG, Kapoor became
vegetarian, a requirement of the group, only after
reading 'Life is Fair' by Brian Hines. Hines was
formerly a prominent sect member who now runs
the critical blog, Church of the Churchless.
Hines said at the time: "Im pleased that my
book had an effect on Shahid. Id write it
differently today.
=Gurinder Singh is set to make a surprise visit to
the USA early in August before going to Britain
later in the month.

(Adopt a veggie dog FG June). Lesprdateurs devraient-ils tre soumis

chien me semble non-vegan.
(I wonder if dogs are really made for
a veggie diet, not quite convinced.
Should predators be trained
likewise but then, what happen to
scavengers. Poor vultures and
condors! Dogs were wolves, wolves
will never go green. I think this is
taking vegan lifestyle a bit too far.
And you cant have the dogs opinion
on that, so thats a vicious circle.
Not taking the dogs opinion into

Hi Stephen, Thanks for replying. (A
question of sect FG June).
I am surprised you think sant mat is
a Sikh sect as I would be if you
described Christianity as a Jewish
sect. Christianity is not seen as a
sect of Judaism despite Jesus being
Jewish. If the Radha Soami master
was a Hindu, would the teachings be
different in some way? He happens
to be Sikh but it is not an offshoot of
Sikhism or any other religion. As I
assume you know Sikhs near the
dera have often been quite hostile to
RSSB in the past.
If Gurinder Singh is on friendly
terms with certain important Sikhs
and goes to the Golden Temple I
don't see how that makes him a
Sikh.
Does he get involved with how
Sikhs run their religion or
organisation? Of course not,
because he is not part of it. RSSB is
a spiritual path whose master
happens to be Sikh and whose
teachings correspond to many Sikh,
Christian, Buddhist, Sufi and Muslim
teachings (amongst others).
That is why there is such a wide
variety of material used at satsangs
(meetings). Calling it a Sikh sect is
misleading and inaccurate.

WANT MAYO WITH THAT?
AMYS DRIVE-THRU GAMBLE
VEGETARIAN giant Amys Foods has thismonth opened a drive-thru restaurant innorthern California despite a ban on newdrive thrus in the area restricting growth.
The drive-thru on Golf Course Drive West,
Rohnert Park, California is a pure vegetarian
outlet with around 72 seats inside and another
100-150 outdoors.
Hundreds of hungry vegetarians and vegans
swamped the single story outlet, right next to a
MacDonalds and an In n Out Burger joint from
day one (July 20).
But owner Andy Berliner told internet site
biteclubeats.com that since much of Northern
California has bans on new drive-thru
restaurants [they] can [only] use existing fast
food locations that shutter (close).
And he dampened speculation on more
outlets, saying: Amys Drive Thru restaurants
are in the works, but only expect 1-2 more in
the next year or so.
Drive-thrus, as they are called in America
allow customers to literally drive-through
picking up their orders from a window.
They are virtually non-existent in the UK and
can probably be counted on the fingers of one
hand.
The drive-thru meal is consumed in-car and
engines are usually left running while clients
queue up, often for half-an-hour or more.
But manager of restaurant operations, Mark
Thielman, 59, told FG: We run that line fairly
quick. We are not idling there.
And dealing with the obesity factor, he
defended the restaurants vegetarian ethos.
If theres more choices out there we can
maybe steer people a different way. It depends
what youre eating. If youre eating an apple,
[its better than] a donut. People can be taught
to eat differently.
And Thielman, who lives locally, pointed out
that the restaurant provided a couple of
electric charging stations. The staff of 80 are
mostly young though some are middle-aged.
They are expected to do a variety of jobs from
flipping burgers to cleaning tables.
Opposition to drive-thrus is not new. State
capital, Sacramento, has thrown out plans for a
McDonalds drive-thru for reasons of health,
safety and quality of life.
During a nearly two-hour debate, residents,
community activists, doctors and architects
voiced unease about the projects impact on
traffic, air quality, walk-ability, bike safety, land
use, adjacent homes and perpetuation of an
unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle, the
Sacramento Press reported in April 2012.
Asked if they could scrap the drive-thru bit,
McDonalds said flatly: There could be no
restaurant without it.

VegFestUK, which has successfully raised
awareness on a massive scale elsewhere in the
UK - notably Bristol and London - now has
Scotlands second city in its sights for the first time
and from there, doubtless, the country itself.
Alan Lee, spokesman for VegFest, said:
Preparations for this year's inaugural Vegfest in
Hall 3 of the SECC in Glasgow in December have
been immense, with a string of media stories
generated and 40 bookings for stalls confirmed
since the show's launch in March.
With a 12 year track record, Vegfest has been
organising huge shows in Brighton, Bristol and
London with at least 10,000 visitors at each event.
Of the 40 exhibitors already confirmed at the
event on 5th and 6th December a sizeable
proportion are from Scotland, Lee claimed.

TALKING of France what is it about the English and
the UK in general that makes us so risk-averse.
Its well-known folklore that we obey European
directives to the letter, when other countries simply
ignore them or find ways to get round them.
Here in France youll find tons of slippery-sided
swimming pools with not a warning notice in sight,
positively dangerous cracked pavements and no
yellow sign when a member of the opposite sex is
cleaning the toilets - how could there be when the
toilets are unisex anyway (horror of horrors)!
So I suppose it should come as no surprise when
the authorities put the fear of god up us over
something that is freely available in other countries.
Speaking to French friends about raw (un-
pasteurised) milk they simply cannot understand our
morbid fears of a few bacteria.
Here youll find raw milk available in machines
outside supermarkets and shops, succulent
Camemberts and Bries made from un-pasteurised milk
with a taste impossible to find back home.
So come on Britain, throw caution to the wind and
live a little. You might enjoy it!

THE MAHATMA AND THE
LONDON VEG SOCIETYVegetarians
have a habit of
talking about
nothing but
food.
The young Gandhi (front centre-right) at the Vegetarian Federal Union Conference inPortsmouth, May 6, 1891, next to him in the light suit is his friend Dr. Josiah Oldfield.
Mahatma Gandhi was in London from 1888,
when he was 18, to 1891, when he was 21.
He studied law at UCL and trained at the In-
ner Temple.
A Hindu of the merchant class he was a
vegetarian from birth.
"Full of the neophyte's zeal for vegetarian-ism" he started a vegetarian club in Bayswa-
ter where he lived. The club went for a
while, but came to an end "in the course of a
few months".
Later he was elected to the Executive
Committee of the [London] Vegetarian Soci-
ety where he helped shape policy. He was
invited to speak at a social meeting of the
LVS in November 1931.
Just 17 years later he was assassinatedby Hindu nationalist Nathoram Godse.
Ghandi had led the non-violent movement
which eventually ousted the British from hisbeloved India. But riots broke out between
Hindus and Muslims post independence as
the sub-continent was forceably split in two.
Godse who felt Ghandi was giving too
much away to the Mohammedans fired
three bullets into the chest of the Mahatma,
who had refused a government offer of
armed protection, at point-blank range. Here's what Ghandi told the LVS:
Mr, Chairman, Fellow Vegetarians, and
Friends,
When I received the invitation to be
present at this meeting, I need not tell
you how pleased I was because it re-
vived old memories and recollections of
pleasant friendships formed with vege-
tarians. I feel especially honoured to
find on my right, Mr. Henry Salt. It was
Mr. Salts book A Plea for Vegetarian-
ism, which showed me why apart from
a hereditary habit, and apart from my
adherence to a vow administered to me
by my mother, it was right to be a vege-
tarian. He showed me why it was a mor-
al duty incumbent on vegetarians not to
live upon fellow-animals. It is, therefore,
a matter of additional pleasure to me
that I find Mr. Salt in our midst.
I do not propose to take up your time
by giving you my various experiences of
vegetarianism nor do I want to tell you
something of the great difficulty that
faced me in London itself in remaining
staunch to vegetarianism, but I would
like to share with you some of the
thoughts that have developed in me in
connection with vegetarianism. Forty
years ago I used to mix freely with veg-
etarians. There was at that time hardly a
vegetarian restaurant in London that I
had not visited. I made it a point, out of
curiosity, and to study the possibilities of
vegetarianism and vegetarian restau-
rants in London, to visit every one of
them. Naturally, therefore, I came into
close contact with many vegetarians. I
found, at the tables, that largely the con-
versation turned upon food and disease.
I found also that the vegetarians who 4

were struggling to stick to their vegetari-
anism were finding it difficult from the
health point of view.
I do not know whether, nowadays,
you have those debates, but I used at
that time to attend debates that were
held between vegetarians and vegetari-
ans and between vegetarians and non-
vegetarians. I remember one such de-
bate, between Dr. Densmore and the
late Dr. T. R. Allinson. Then vegetarians
had a habit of talking of nothing but food
and nothing but disease. I feel that that
is the worst way of going about the busi-
ness. I notice also that it is those per-
sons who become vegetarians because
they are suffering from some disease or
other that is, from purely the health
point of view it is those persons who
largely fall back. I discovered that for
remaining staunch to vegetarianism a
man requires a moral basis.
For me that was a great discovery in
my search after truth. At an early age, in
the course of my experiments, I found
that a selfish basis would not serve the
purpose of taking a man higher and
higher along the paths of evolution.
What was required. was an altruistic
purpose. I found also that health was by
no means the monopoly of vegetarians.
I found many people having no bias
one way or the other and that non-vege-
tarians were able to show, generally
speaking, good health. I found also that
several vegetarians found it impossible
to remain vegetarians because they had
made food a fetish and because they
thought that by becoming vegetarians
they could eat as much lentil, haricot,
beans and cheese as they liked.
Of course those people could not pos-
sibly keep their health.
