Welcome and Call to Worship Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

*Opening Song "I'll Fly Away" Blue Cypress Bluegrass Band

Some glad morning when this life is o'er, I'll fly away; To a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away.

Refrain: I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away. (In the morning.) When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I'll fly away.

When the shadows of this life have gone, I'll fly away; Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I'll fly away. Refrain

Just a few more weary days and then, I'll fly away; To a land where joy shall never end, I'll fly away. Refrain

*Litany Matt Cleary

One: In the beginning, God said, let there be light.

All: Each day, God's gift of light dazzles our world with the sunrise and sparkles in the night sky.

One: The scriptures guide us in the way of life.

All: God's Word is a light for our path.

One: God's love gives light and life to our world.

All: When the time was right, God gave Jesus to light the way for us.

One: God invites us to live and love humbly, so that we shine like stars in our world. Please pray with me…

*Unison Prayer of Confession Matt Cleary

Living God, you give us all that we need to live and thrive. Forgive us when we waste it or hoard it, leaving others to fend for themselves. Loving Christ, you sacrificed your status and authority to humble yourself and enter into our world. Forgive us when we promote ourselves and seek power over others. Forgive us and fill us with the mind of Christ. Amen

Attending To God's Word

A Reading from the Psalter Rev. David W. Johnson

Introduction

One: The ancient texts see the goodness of God in the splendor of our natural world.

All: We join with people of every age who see God’s glory all around us.

Psalm 8

O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?

Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

Response

One: The psalmist invites us to ponder the magnificence of the universe and our place in it.

All: We join with the sun and stars to proclaim the glory of God.

Reading from the New Testament Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

Introduction

One: The scriptures breathe life into all who can hear them.

All: We listen in order to live with the mindset of Christ.

Philippians 2:1-15

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Do all things without murmuring and arguing, so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world.

Response

One: The ancient church and church today are awed by the humility and glory of Christ.

All: Our purpose is to shine like the stars.

One: Let us pray. Amen

The Lord's Prayer (spoken)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

The Sending Forth

Community Words Rev. David W. Johnson

*Closing Song "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" Blue Cypress Bluegrass Band

I was standing by my window on a cold and cloudy day, When I saw that hearse come rolling for to carry my mother away.

Refrain: Will the circle be unbroken, by and by, Lord, by and by? There's a better home a-waiting in the sky, Lord, in the sky.

I said to that undertaker, "Undertaker please drive slow, For this lady you are carrying Lord, I hate to see her go." Refrain

Oh, I followed close behind her, tried to stand there and be brave, But I could not hide my sorrow, when they laid her in the grave. Refrain

I went back home, Lord, my home was lonesome, missed my mother, she was gone. All my brothers, sisters crying, what a home so sad and lone. Refrain
