Gospel John 11: 1-45 — Lazarus, dead for four days, came out of his tomb when Jesus called his name. Many of those who had seen what had happened began to believe in Jesus.

Being Entombed / Estando Sepultado

I have done some spelunking in the past. You might be think-ing: “What is spelunking?” Spelunking is a recreational pastime of ex-ploring the wild cave system. A wild cave system as opposed to com-mercial exploration of the cave does not have handrails, flat floors, sanitized surroundings, and with lights. I have ventured into caves with guano literally littering the cave floor. You see rough surfaces all around you and often time sharp and can bruise you. It can be physically chal-lenging. It has a lot of twist and turns that without a guide you can easi-ly get lost. There are spaces that are just too narrow and you have to squeeze your way into. I survived one harrowing experience and I was glad I was able to do it at least once in my lifetime.

You might say that I am adventurous to try that. To tell you the truth, I feel trapped whenever I enter into a cave. As I enter into its cav-ern and walked into darkness, I feel suffocated and uneasy. I would not venture entering a cave alone. I would only dare enter it when I am with someone or a group. It gives me that assurance and peace of mind to know that someone is there with me and helping me. The presence of a friend is reassuring. It makes the experience less frightening.

Time and again we experience going into the cave metaphori-cally. It is normal that we feel afraid. We are suddenly thrust into a reali-ty that can be frightening and unsettling. We experience trauma, severe sickness, financial breakdown, breakdown of marriage and relation-ships, loss of job, troubles with immigration, and a lot more. Even retire-ment can be frightening. Ultimately there is one cave that we are too afraid to face and even enter willingly – going through an experience of death of a love one or of our own death.

In all this we feel trapped and powerless. We feel bound up and there is no way out. We oftentimes feel like Martha and Mary calling out to Jesus to come and to prevent these things from happening and yet Jesus seemed not to be in a hurry to help us or sometimes we even think that God does not care at all. The words of Marth and Mary rings out during this moment: “Lord, if you have been here my brother would not have died. If only God listened and acted promptly, if only . . . . .”

God can be a miracle worker and all our woes and problems. But He chose not to solve all our human conditions. He has done some miracles in order to strengthen faith and make use of it to assure us of His presence and His care for us. But He will not remove all that afflicts us. Remember He too experienced being abandoned, ridiculed and mocked, condemned unjustly, suffered terribly, and died a shameful death. He experienced our deep longing for some respite from all this when He said on the cross: “Father, why have you abandoned me.” Jesus went through the experience of our deepest, painful and saddest experience to make us see that He completely understands what we are going through. Though He will not cure all diseases, assuage all our pains, remove all our problems, and eradicate death at this time, He will be there with us and holding our hands. He will be there to assure us as we walk into the darkness of that experience that we will be able to go through it and come out better and stronger. He will be there to lighten our load and make it easier to swallow the bitter pill of suffering. He will be there. But we need to have faith and believe: “This sickness is not to end in death but is for the glory of God.” In the end is the promise gift of life and resurrection. May we see beyond our pain, our suffering, our cross, and our dying a life that is renewed and ultimately a life that is glorified.

Al entrar en su caverna y entrar en la oscuridad, me siento sofoca-do e inquieto. No me atrevería a entrar en una cueva solo. Sólo me atrevería a entrar cuando esté con alguien o con un grupo. Me da esa seguridad y tranquilidad de saber que alguien está allí conmigo y me ayuda. La presencia de un amigo es reconfortante. Hace que la experi-encia sea menos aterradora.

Una y otra vez experimentamos entrar en la cueva metafórica-mente. Es normal que tengamos miedo. Estamos repentinamente empujados en una realidad que puede ser aterradora e inquietante. Experimentamos el trauma, la enfermedad severa, la avería financiera, la desintegración del matrimonio y de las relaciones, la pérdida del trabajo, los apuros con la inmigración, y mucho más. Incluso la jubi-lación puede ser aterradora. En última instancia hay una cueva que estamos demasiado asustados para enfrentar e incluso entrar volunta-riamente - pasando por una experiencia de muerte de un ser querido o de nuestra propia muerte.

En todo esto nos sentimos atrapados e impotentes. Nos senti-mos ligados y no hay salida. A menudo nos sentimos como Marta y María llamando a Jesús para venir y evitar que estas cosas sucedan y, sin embargo, Jesús parecía no tener prisa para ayudarnos o a veces incluso pensamos que a Dios no le importa en absoluto. Las palabras de Marta y Mary resuenan en este momento: "Señor, si has estado aquí mi hermano no habría muerto. Si sólo Dios escuchara y actuara con prontitud, si tan solo . . . . "

Dios puede ser un trabajador de milagros y todas nuestras aflic-ciones y problemas. Pero El eligió no resolver todas nuestras condi-ciones humanas. Él ha hecho algunos milagros para fortalecer la fe y hacer uso de ella para asegurarnos de Su presencia y Su cuidado por nosotros. Pero Él no quitará todo lo que nos aflige. Recuerda que también él experimentó ser abandonado, ridiculizado y burlado, conde-nado injustamente, sufrió terriblemente y murió una muerte vergon-zosa. Él experimentó nuestro profundo anhelo de un respiro de todo esto cuando dijo en la cruz: "Padre, ¿por qué me has abandonado?" Jesús pasó por la experiencia de nuestra más profunda, dolorosa y triste experiencia para hacernos ver que Él entiende completamente lo que Estamos pasando.

Aunque Él no curará todas las enfermedades, aliviará todos nuestros dolores, removerá todos nuestros problemas y erradicará la muerte en este tiempo, Él estará allí con nosotros y tomará nuestras manos. Él estará allí para asegurarnos mientras caminamos en la os-curidad de esa experiencia que podremos ir a través de ella y salir cada vez mejor. Él estará allí para aligerar nuestra carga y hacer más fácil tragar la píldora amarga del sufrimiento. El estará ahí. Pero nece-sitamos tener fe y creer: "Esta enfermedad no es para terminar en la muerte sino para la gloria de Dios." Al final es el don de la promesa de vida y resurrección. Que podamos ver más allá de nuestro dolor, de nuestro sufrimiento, de nuestra cruz y de nuestra muerte una vida que se renueva y finalmente una vida que es glorificada.
