ANTITHESIS

• Antithesis is a figure of speech which refers to the juxtaposition of opposing or contrasting ideas.

ANTITHESIS

• literal meaning opposite, is a rhetorical device in which two opposite ideas are put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect.

ANTITHESISExamples:-"The more acute the experience, the less articulate its expression. "

- "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

ANTITHESISExamples:- Man proposes, God disposes.

- Too black for heaven, and yet too white for hell.

ANTITHESISExamples:- Patience is bitter, but it has a sweet fruit.

- "It's never too soon, It's never too late."

OXYMORON

• is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect.

OXYMORON• The common oxymoron phrase is a combination of an adjective proceeded by a noun with contrasting meanings .

OXYMORON

• However, the contrasting words/phrases are not always glued together.

OXYMORONExamples:• There is a real love hate relationship developing between the two of them.• - The comedian was seriously funny.

OXYMORONExamples:- You are clearly confused by the situation you have found yourself in.

- Do you have the original copies that we requested?

OXYMORONExamples:- This is a genuine imitation Rolex watch.

- His new girlfriend really is pretty ugly.

PARADOX

• Paradox is a literary device used to present contradictory ideas in an interesting manner.

PARADOX

• The effect of this is to jolt cause the reader into paying attention.

PARADOXExamples:- "He who loses his life for My sake will save it."

- The following sentence is true the above sentence is a lie.

PARADOXExamples:- Please ignore the notice.

- They must go to war to make peace.
