Reading 1: Read the following text and answer the questions below:

Martin Strel, a legendary Guinness record marathon swimmer, has always

been looking for the challenges of impossible. Strel was born on October 1954

in Slovenia, a small country located in south of Austria. He taught himself to

swim when he was 6, in a nearby stream, and became a professional

marathon swimmer in 1978.

On April 7th, 2007 Martin Strel completed his epic Amazon River swim all the

way from Peru to the Atlantic Ocean at Belém (Brazil). He was struggling the

river for 66 days for more than 10 hours a day and totally swam 5,268

kilometers. He is the only man in the world to do this, breaking all world

records.

Martin prepared himself before his long swim. For months, he swam three to

five hours every day and practiced in the gym to be strong. He also travelled to

the Amazon to learn about the river and its dangers. He talked to doctors. They

told him how to protect himself against dangerous diseases.

Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far, so that’s why they

sometimes describe him as “Fishman” or even “The Craziest Man in the World”.

When we asked him why he wanted this challenge, he said, “If you have a

goal, you have to try to achieve it. I chose to swim the Amazon.”

Written by JSGS Students: Dear Sara,

Hi! How are you? How is your family? It's been a long time I haven't written for

you. I hope your holiday is going fine. I'm now in Dubai with my friends. I'm so

excited to tell you about everything.

We are staying at Al khaleej Hotel. It's the most popular hotel in the Middle

East. We've been here for almost one week. The weather is sunny but not very

hot, and it's a bit cool at night.

We just got back to the hotel, today was full of activities. We tried skiing in

Dubai Ski. Also, we had Arabian food for the first time and it was so delicious.

But the best thing I've done today is the bungee jumping from Khalifa Tower,

the highest building in the world. It was scary but fun at the same time.

Here's some news about my group of friends. Dana is the type of person who

complains about everything. Fatima didn't try the bungee jumping and now

she regrets it! And me, I'm enjoying everything here.

It's getting late! I must stop now to get some sleep. See you soon.

All the best,

Miley

Written by JSGS Students: Dear Amal,

Hey! How are you doing? How is your family? I hope everything is going well.

Have you finished your Tennis course? How was it?

Well, my family and I are now in London. It’s just like how I imagined it. We

arrived to the hotel two days ago. The hotel is very luxurious and we're

enjoying our stay here. When we arrived, the weather was cold and foggy, but

then it changed to windy. So we decided to leave the hotel and go out to the

mountains.

In the early morning, we prepared our luggage to go to the mounts. We

started our trip, feeling alive but since we reached the top, we were exhausted

and our feet were swollen from the long difficult path. We are going to take our

first lesson of parachuting later. I am very excited

Here's some news for you about the group. Fatima is the cook. Aneesa

complains about everything and Duaa tells jokes all the time.

Well, I must stop writing now because we're going parachuting and have to

get ready. I’ll be home on Thursday 6th.

See you soon.

Love,

Hawraa

Reading 2: Read the following text and answer the questions below: In January 1924, a professor at the Japanese Imperial University brought home

a two-month old puppy. Dr. Ueno named the puppy “Hachiko”.

This beautiful white dog accompanied Dr. Ueno to the train station every

morning, where Dr. Ueno would say goodbye to Hachiko and head to the

university. And every day when Dr. Ueno returned home Hachiko would be

waiting for him at Shibuya station and the two would go home together.

Anyone could see the powerful bond between the dog and his master.

May 21, 1925, was like any other day for the pair. In the morning, Professor

Ueno left Hachiko at Shibuya Station. But when Hachiko returned to the Station

in the evening, his master was nowhere to be found. Though Hachiko waited,

Dr. Ueno never showed up. The fact is Dr. Ueno had died from a stroke earlier

that day.

Every evening Hachiko would return to Shibuya Station and wait for Dr. Ueno to

get off the six-o'clock train. And every day, Hachiko was disappointed. Still, he

never missed a day of hoping that his master would return to him.

The commuters noticed the dog waiting every day at the station. Some of them

had known the pair when Dr. Ueno was still alive, and everyone who heard of

Hachiko's story was touched.

It was March, 1935 when Hachiko finally died. The old dog was found in a

Shibuya street. He had waited for his master for almost ten years. Many

people were saddened by Hachiko's death, but others say that he was finally

at peace and could go with his master. Hachiko's story of loyalty touched the

hearts of many people all over the world.

Written by JSGS Students:

It was a windy day in winter. The night before, my father, my brother and I had

decided to go camping in Sakhir. My brother had just got his driving license so

my father let him drive.

When we had everything ready, we set off. We had driven a few miles by the

time we noticed that the wind was becoming strong. As we reached the

desert, the wind became stronger and stronger and the car started trembling.

We went over a big rock on the side of the road and the car flipped over easily

like a coin because of the extreme strength of the wind. Somehow, I managed

to stay conscious, while both my father and my brother fainted.

However, I was stuck and couldn't move. As I was helpless, I started shouting

with the hope that someone would hear me, but it was no use. After all, we

were in a remote area. Just then, I remembered that my brother had always

kept his mobile phone in his right pocket, which was the one closer to me. So, I

did everything I could to grab it by my mouth and I managed to do so. Then, I

called an ambulance and we were rescued.

In the end, we were taken to the hospital, treated from some injuries, and let

out in the same day. It had been a very long day, but we all felt happy to be

back home.

Written by JSGS Students:

It was a beautiful spring day, the sun was shining and there was a gentle

wind. My friends and I decided to go on a picnic to Dohat Arad. So, after that

we could directly go to the airport to welcome our friend Lamya'a, who was

coming back from the USA.

At the beginning, each of us prepared a dish. I chose to do club sandwiches.

The sea breeze was inhaling in the garden. Once we arrived there, we settled

next to a big green tree. Its shadow protected us from the sun light.

Suddenly, grey clouds covered the sky and it got really dark and scary,

especially near the sea. Quickly, it started raining cats and dogs. We packed

our things as fast as we could and ran to the car. We decided to go back

home and not to wait for Lamya’a. While our friend Noor was driving, Fatima

gasped. "What's going on?” we shouted. "A plane coming from America had

fallen down and crashed”, she answered with tears falling down on her face.

Immediately, Noor drove back to the airport.

When we arrived, we saw Lamya'a waiting for us in front of the main gate with

a big smile on her face. "Lmaya'a!" we cried. We all ran towards her and

hugged her. Later, she explained that she had changed the returned flight. We

felt very happy to see her back home safe.

Reading 3: Read the following text and answer the questions below:

In 1977, Mr. Nicholas Scotti, a journalist flew from America to Italy to visit some

relatives. He was very happy when he sat on the airplane. He was going back

to Italy, his native country, after years of living in San Francisco. His flight

stopped for a couple hours in New York for refueling. Mr. Scotti assumed they

had already landed in Rome and left the airport.

Scotti was confused by the unusual skyline, but assumed the city had

undergone recent modernization. He was amazed that most people spoke

English, but figured that Rome was a popular tourist attraction for Americans.

Anyway, he didn´t have time to think about it much as he wanted to meet his

relatives. So, Scotti spotted a policeman, he asked, in Italian, for directions to

the bus terminal. Oddly enough, the policeman was an immigrant from Naples

and conversed with him in fluent Italian. Mr. Scotti followed his directions and

found the bus terminal where he caught a bus. He explained to the driver that

he was looking for his nephews – but as the bus driver didn´t understand him,

took him to another policeman, who did not speak Italian either.

Scotti was baffled when he found no one else in Rome who could speak

Italian. Even when told he was told he was in New York, he refused to believe

it. In the end, police officers drove him back to the airport and sent him on a

return flight to San Francisco. But, for Nicholas Scotti, the police car racing to

the airport only confirmed he was in Rome. “I know I’m in Italy,” he said, “That’s

how they drive.”

Subject: public transportation.

Nowadays, the use of public transportation has been decreasing because of

the use of modern cars. The aim of this report is to examine the public

transport situation in Bahrain.

There are many advantages of using public transportation:

1. It is affordable to most people because of the cheap tickets, it does not

cost more than 200 Fils.

2. While waiting in the station, passengers can meet many people and

have chitchat with them.

3. Public transportation can increase tourism, by taking tourists to different

sightseeing in Bahrain.

4. Using public transportation will cause less pollution and traffic jams in

the country.

Moreover, there are many disadvantages in public transportation:

1. Passengers have to wait so long in stations. This could waste their time.

2. People mostly complain about how smelly the bus is, because there are

no cleaners.

3. People have to stand because there are not enough seats, which is

dangerous and against the Traffic management laws.

4. Some buses are too small for the number of passengers, especially to

Manama.

To sum up, public transportation is the best solution to reduce pollution and the

easy way to roam around the city. However, it can take long time to reach

people’s destination.

Subject: Building a shelter for unwanted animals.

The area where I live has many stray animals. Recently, a decision was made

which states that any unwanted animal found is getting executed. As a result,

a shelter is going to be built here soon.

On the one hand, there are many great things about this idea such as:

1. Many innocent souls would be saved from human's cruelty.

2. Animals would be provided with the medical care they deserve ranging

from food, vitamins and vaccines.

3. Instead of paying lots of money on a pet, people would be able to adopt

any animal they want.

4. Building a shelter is considered to be a good deed, and good deeds get

you to heaven.

On the other hand, there are several bad points about this idea, like:

1. The shelter is going to be built in the neighborhood which means people

will be annoyed by all the noises.

2. There is a big lack of professions and experts. Due to the disinterest in

animals in Bahrain.

3. Having a large number of animals in one place could spread illnesses

and disease in the town.

4. The place is too small to handle all animals in town, and it is not fully

equipped.

All in all, this shelter will help animals in need and this could result goodness to

the people in town, even though there are many disadvantages to it.

Reading 4: Read the following text and answer the questions below:

The very first forms of mass communications were quite literally word of

mouth! People would pay others to tell them the news. The first published

news began in Ancient Rome -- the Acta Diurna, a stone or metal piece etched

with news of the day, was posted in a public place. In China in the 700s, the

government wrote up their own newspaper with information on laws and

politics, and it was read to the people by a government official.

The invention of the printing press changed everything. People began to write

not only the news, but their opinions on it as well. For a long time, something

called a broadside was one of the most common ways for people to get their

point across and to spread the news – a broadside was a sheet of paper with

information on it, or sometimes a cartoon or song, that was posted in a public

place like a town square or the side of a building on a busy street.

The first newspaper is said to have been written in Germany in the early 1600s.

Newspapers became the most popular way for Americans and Europeans to

hear the news. At first, instead of being read by individuals, they were read

aloud in taverns and coffeehouses. In the late 1800s, magazines provided an

additional source of news. They contained longer articles on bigger topics,

much like they do today. Newspapers and magazines were the main source

of news in the US until the mid-20th century, when radio and TV came along.

Newspapers were still popular, but these new technologies provided new ways

of receiving the news.

Now we have the Internet, which allows us access to news and opinions from

all over the world at a moment’s notice.

Al Wasat Newspaper

Manama

Kingdom of Bahrain

Dear editor,

I am writing to protest about the shortage of car parking in our area. The

number of parks are not enough compared to the number of people. Many

people are annoyed about this problem.

First, the government says that the village is too small to have this number of

car parking. Also, it has built new buildings and shops to enhance business as

a result, the area is now too crowded. Moreover, the budget is limited and the

government cannot provide the people with all what they need.

Despite what the government says, we need more car parking lot because not

all houses in the village have garages. If we don't have enough car parking, it

will be difficult for people outside the village to visit their relatives or even shop,

this will affect us financially. Also, People will waste their time searching for a

park.

I think other residents should write to the government about this issue. Next

weekend, l will be outside the City Center in Manama to collect signatures for a

petition. I think we are supposed to do all we can to have solutions for this

problem.

I look forward to reading more letters about this issue in your newspaper.

Dear editor,

I am writing to protest about the annoying traffic jams during rush hours. Many

people have been against the idea of the traffic lights in the roundabout from

the beginning. Nevertheless, the government has done nothing to solve this

problem.

First, the government has put the traffic lights in the roundabout thinking that it

will solve the problem of the traffic. No one from the government has realized

this was a huge mistake until now!

Despite what the government says, all this traffic is causing many

environmental issues such as air noise and pollution. In addition, spending

long hours in a closed car will drive people insane and make them lose their

temper. Also, being stuck in traffic means being late for important events.

Moreover, no ambulance could ever get out of this traffic, especially at peak

hours.

I think the government should take this seriously and start doing something

about it, like expanding the roads and building some bridges. Plus, we would

do everything to stop this problem, therefore I would be outside the center of

my town to collect signatures for a petition.

I look forward to reading more letters about this issue in your newspaper.
