FINE WINE ITALY

JUNE 2014

FontanafreddaFontanafredda was purchased by the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, as ahunting retreat. It was left to his first born, Count Emanuele Alberto di Mirafiori who, itseemed, was more interested in drinking wine than making it. Such profligacy couldonly have one outcome, and the party-loving Count’s bankers became winemakers.Widely regarded as one of the region’s great estates, the 250-acre property producedsome good wines, but seldom lived up to its potential until 2008, when Oscar Farinettiand Luca Baffiso purchased a large part of the estate and introduced a renewedimpetus. The vineyards, planted on Piedmont’s gently undulating Langhe slopes, areresponsible for Italy's version of Bordeaux reds, the muscular, brooding, long-livedwines of Barolo and Barbera that are forged from the Nebbiolo grape. With RobertParker rating the majority of Fontanafredda's output in the 90-point range, it is noexaggeration to say that this is one of the great producers of one of the world's greatwine styles.

There’s a rose blossom character amongst the dankearth, then the fruit and spice surge forth, the tightening grip of tannin barely restraining theconcentration of flavours.

Gianni GagliardoWhile the name Gagliardo is somewhat new to Barolo’s terrain, the estate itself hasbeen around for many years, trading under the moniker of its founder, Paolo Colla.Gianni Gagliardo married into Paolo’s family in the 1970s and by the mid-80s hadaltered the name to his own, signifying a change in guard and in style. The Gagliardowinery is located in the picturesque area of La Morra, at the foot of the mountain thatthe village of La Morra sits atop. The area itself produces 31% of the total Barolo made, the sub-region’s style delicate, perfumed and quite subtle. Gianni's two oldest sons areinvolved in this family-run operation, with Stefano assisting Gianni with winemaking andbrother Alberto managing the family's 30 hectares of vineyards. These vineyards arethe major source of the Gagliardo Barolos. The company's reputation is based on theseoutstanding expressions, but it also makes an excellent range of classic Piedmontwines that are among the best in the region.

62751 GIANNI GAGLIARDO BAROLA SERRE DOCG 2006 $160.00 $111.00

Yes, great Barolo can reach stratospheric price heights a la Bordeaux; you just have to know where tolook. Two prime sites contribute hand-picked fruit that sits for thirty long months in oak before theGaggles even take a peek. It'll peak around 2018; panic not, the slow evolution is already worthindulging in now. Buy a box, watch it grow. 92/100 from Wine Spectator too.

62758 GIANNI GAGLIARDO BAROLO 2006 $86.00 $58.00

62752 GIANNI GAGLIARDO BATIE LANGHE NEBBIOLO DOC 2006 $98.00 $70.00

Along with the Monferrato Hills, the Langhe Hills account for 90% of Piedmontese production. Batie is‘Baptism’ in Italian, the growers judging this wine as being good enough for that momentous event.Nebbiolo here is intense, spicy sweetness with a Bond-like smoothness, the oak controlled andsupportive, allowing the fruit to shine. The palate is richly flavoured, with berry, violet and liquoricewoven into a long, smooth finish.

62756 GIANNI GAGLIARDO BATIE' LANGHE NEBBIOLO DOC 2007 $79.90 $58.00

'Batie' refers to the growers’ expression that the wine is so good it's 'fit for a baptism'. Aged in both weebarrels and big casks, this is sturdy yet accessible, the fruit intensitysoaring with singing spice and varietal breadth and depth.

62750 GIANNI GAGLIARDO PREVE BAROLA RISERVA DOCG 2003 $244.00 $173.00

100% Nebbiolo and produced from two vineyards, the two batches of fruit were separately fermentedand aged in French oak barriques for 24 months, then blended and bottle-aged for a further six months. With a bouquet of blackberry, cherry and prune backed by tobacco and tarry oak nuances, this is abold, richly flavoured wine with hints of leather and balsamic wrapped around a fine coating of tannin.Truly magnificent.

Nebbiolo is the great grape variety of Barolo, and here it is grown on a single vineyard site, SanPonzio, in the region of Roero. As such, it can’t be called Barolo, so goes under the classification ofNebbiolo d’Alba. It is a bold, brash style with great fruit and a deceptive sweetness, all bound togetherwith seductive poise. A glittering Piedmontese gem.

Biondi-Santi120km south of Florence, tucked away in the warmest part of Tuscany is Montalcino, where the Biondi-Santi family go way back. They are the original champions ofBrunello, the Sangiovese clone isolated in the 1800s by local farmer, Clemente Santi, that evolved into one of Italy’s rarest and most expensive wines, Brunello di Montalcino(first released in 1888 by Clemente’s grandson, the visionary Feruccio Biondi-Santi,who completely discarded the Tuscan winemaking manual to forge its magnificence). Not ones to rush into things, the Biondi-Santis had by the end of WWII released onlyfour vintages (hence the rarity perhaps) in 1888, 1891, 1925 and 1945. These days theresiding patriarch is Franco Biondi-Santi, described intriguingly by his grand-daughterClio as being ‘a hard man, but he has a good heart.’

62816 BIONDI SANTI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG 2005 $199.00 $149.00

Stephen Tanzer, 89/100: "Bright red with a pale rim. Initially reticent but pure nose opens with air toreveal red cherry, redcurrant, minerals and tobacco, all lifted by a whiff of almond flower. Vivaciousraspberry and candied cherry flavors on entry are strongly underscored by minerals, which gainstrength with air. Finishes with strong saline and floral notes and smooth tannins. Though lessexplosive than the excellent 2001 or 2004 Brunellos made here, this is very successful for the vintage."

CecchiWhile they innovate and look forward, it is the experience of the Cecchi family goingback over a hundred years that stands them in good stead to produce great wines: theyare pioneers of the Maremma region, on the Southern Tuscan Coast whereSangiovese is coming into its own, and have decades of knowledge of the terroir, whilethe Cecchi holdings in the Chianti Classico are responsible for producing theircharacterful and intensely flavoured Classico and stunning Riserva wines. Tastingthrough the range of Cecchi wines it becomes clear that Chianti can be as serious a redwine contender as anything from the Rhone or Burgundy, when given the respect andtreatment that this estate shows it. Their Orvieto, a white wine from neighbouringUmbria, is everything an Italian white should be: fresh, crisp, vivacious, and a livelypartner to a range of foods.

Angelo GajaThe Gaja winery was founded in the Piemonte region of northern Italy in 1859 byGiovanni Gaja, and it has been family owned and operated for four generations in aconstantly evolving arc of inspired winemaking. Current patriarch, Angelo Gaja, starteda revolution in the area following several trips to France, and is credited with takingboth Barbaresco and Barolo into new stylistic areas, more often than not throughcontroversial measures. Foremost is his use of oak barriques to soften the Nebbiolotannins and produce a richer, more concentrated wine than the traditional model.Temperature-controlled fermentation, green harvest, reduction of crop size and theintroduction of French varieties have all contributed to his modernist reputation and thesoaring international praise for the Gaja wines. Wine Spectator proclaimed his 1985Barbarescos ‘the finest wines ever made in Italy.’ With Angelo now past 70, hisdaughters Gaia and Rossana run the estate, although, it has to be said, the manhimself has never officially retired.

It is the most nuanced of thesesingle-vineyard offerings, with gorgeous notes of tar, smoke, roses, violets, sweet toasted oak andearthiness that emerge from the glass in a counterpoint of sublime elegance and stunning purity. Itpossesses superb length and elegant, silky tannins to round out the finish. This extraordinary SoriTildin will require at least a few years of bottle age, but it is destined to be one of the vintage’slegendary wines. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” - AG

64305 ANGELO GAJA BARBARSCO SORI SAN LORENZO 2004 $675.00 $641.25

Robert Parker, 98/100: “The 2004 Sori San Lorenzo is a drop-dead gorgeous wine. It presentsawesome balance, especially in the way it marries power with elegance. This is a remarkably refinedand understated Sori San Lorenzo, with never-ending layers of dark raspberries, licorice, grilled herbsand tar that flow from its sumptuous frame. A dark, brooding beauty, it will require several additionalyears of bottle at a minimum, but those with the patience to wait will be amply rewarded. In mostvintages I prefer the Sori Tildin, but in 2004 Sori San Lorenzo has a very slight edge over its sibling. Itmay very well be the finest Sori San Lorenzo since the legendary 1971. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.” - AG

AntinoriTuscan to the core, the Antinori family have been making wine for over six hundredyears, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a paid-up member of the FlorentineGuild of Vintners back in 1385. This is a long time by anybody’s yardstick, and meansthey were already well into their core business when Leonardo da Vinci was just downthe road attempting to invent a helicopter (a truly sobering thought, Chianti in hand ornot). They even own their own Renaissance-era palace. Throughout a history spanningtwenty-six generations, the family have remained directly hands-on, making innovativeand often courageous choices, tempered by an unwavering respect for theirpainstakingly earned traditions and the integrity of their Tuscan and Umbrianlandscapes. Today, Marchese Piero Antinori directs the company, assisted by his threedaughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. A deeply-instilled understanding of heritage, combined with a good dose of passion and instinct, have made Antinori one of Italy’sleading fine wine producers.

Castello di GabbianoTuscany’s winemaking journey began over 3,000 years ago with the canny, vine-cultivating Etruscans. With everyone in the general vicinity keen on a good vino, it wasinevitable that battles would eventually rage for control of this bountiful area, specificallybetween medieval aspirants Siena and Florence. All this squabbling led to theconstruction of a host of fortified castles, one of them being the Castello di Gabbiano, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Its vaulted cellars date back to the12th century, and wine has seemingly been produced within its walls from day one. These days, using 140 hectares of revitalised hillside vineyards, tradition has beenharnessed to technology via the employment of modern cultivation and winemakingtechniques to create great wines in the rich Tuscan tradition.

Marchesi di GresyKnown officially as ‘Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy’ and around here, a littlemore pragmatically, as just plain ‘di Grésy’ this estate has been in the di Gresy familysince 1797. After a somewhat lengthy period as suppliers of top-quality fruit to otherproducers, Alberto di Grésy (raised apparently with ‘no television and a lot ofpraying’)stiffened his resolve, and in 1973 upped the ante, producing the first inhouse diGrésy wines and transforming the family business into a world-class enterprise. Thearistocratic and affable Alberto and his team vinefy from the company’s four estates,Martinenga, Monte Aribaldo, La Serra and Monte Colombo. Considered to be thegreatest of all the estates in Barbaresco, Martinenga is home to the single vineyards,Camp Gros and Gaiun, nestled between them a 6.49ha block that is the source of animpressive traditional Barbaresco labelled Martinenga.
