As humans we have always felt the need
to express what’s inside. In fact, the oldest
artworks found to date are believed to
have been created between 300 000 and
700 000 years ago; the oldest musical
instrument discovered is a flute made from
bone and thought to be around 60 000
years old. It is inherent in each and every
one of us to express what’s inside.
These days we express ourselves through
the way we dress, the way we dance, the
style of our hair, our choice in jewellery.
And through this need for expression we
create. We write songs, novels, speeches
and poems. We design buildings, clothing,
cars and furniture. We create art, music,
food and of course, wine.
THE 37TH NEDERBURG AUCTION
From a simple beginning that saw 15
wines knocked down for R237 000 at the
inaugural event in 1975, the Nederburg
Auction of rare South African wines has
evolved over almost four decades to
become a major event on the local and
international wine calendar, one that is
known for showcasing only the cream of
South Africa’s finest wines.
Offering a rare opportunity to select,
sample and bid on a stringently selected
range of wines from the country’s premium
winemakers, estates and cellars, the
Nederburg Auction’s expression lies in its
desire to encourage greater wine standards,
develop an awareness of South African
wine and to ensure fair distribution of fine,
rare wines.
We invite you to indulge in the exclusivity,
quality and depth that is the expression
inside this year’s selection of 159 wines,
carefully crafted and chosen to enhance
a wine experience created for you that is
unique to the Nederburg Auction.
Wine is bottled poetry. -Robert Louis Stevenson

EARLY TIMES
The history of wine in South Africa is closely
aligned with the history of the country
itself. The first vineyard was planted by
Commander Jan van Riebeeck in 1655,
three years after he had established the
first settlement at the Cape. As a result of
this, a mere seven years after his arrival at
the Cape, he was able to enter in his diary
on February 2, 1659, the famous phrase:
“Today, praise be to God, wine was pressed
for the first time from Cape grapes.”
Under Van Riebeeck’s successor, Simon
van der Stel, viticulture really flourished.
He developed Groot Constantia to become
a model farm of its time. The wine industry
received a further boost with the arrival
in 1688 of the French Huguenots, who
had fled religious persecution in their
own country. Both they and the German
settlers later made a valuable contribution
to the development of a South African
wine culture. During the 18th century,
Constantia’s famous dessert wines
earned international recognition for Cape
wines, and dignitaries throughout Europe
requested that these wines be served
to them. This was followed by a period
of decline. Protective tariffs in Britain
were abolished and by 1880 phylloxera
– a plague that destroys vine roots – had
HISTORY OF CAPE WINES
devastated South African vineyards, as it
had done in Europe. After the discovery
that American rootstock was resistant to
phylloxera, local vineyards were replanted
with grafted rootstock.
Attempts to counteract overproduction and
low prices led to the establishment of KWV
(Co-operative Winegrowers Association)
in 1918, followed by the introduction of
minimum prices and production quotas
to ensure a stable market. Since then
the industry has made significant strides
forward with the application of the most
scientific viticultural practices and the
use of the most modern cellar equipment.
Continued research into varieties, soil
types and fermentation at the Nietvoorbij
viticultural and oenological research
institute and the University of Stellenbosch
ensures that the industry remains at the
forefront of developments.
The introduction in 1957 of cold
fermentation was a major breakthrough in
wine technology, which resulted in a better
bouquet and improved quality of white
wines. This method also increased the
popularity of semi-sweet wines – bringing
about the wine revolution of the 1950s and
the red wine boom of the early 1970s. In
1973, a comprehensive system of control
was introduced for “wines of origin”.
Thirteen areas of origin were designated
and limitations placed on the use of the
term ‘estate’, vintage dates and grape
variety designations. Local wine industry
regulations were brought in line with those
in Europe and this contributed to varietal
and classic wines becoming more popular.
In 1975, the first auction of rare Cape wines
took place at Nederburg in Paarl, near Cape
Town. This was to become the showpiece
of the South African wine industry.
A NEW CENTURY
By the end of the 20th century, many of
the changes that would positively influence
the wine industry in the 21st century were
in place – the transformation of the central
wine producers’ organisation, KWV, and
the formation of new groupings as other
co-operative wine cellars converted into
companies and generally restructured
themselves to suit changing market
conditions – locally and globally.
KWV changed from a co-operative to a
company in December 1997. After lengthy
negotiations between the Minister of
Agriculture and KWV, the Wine Industry
Trust was established in February 1999 by
these two parties. The aim was to fund and
manage generic promotion and research
for the South African wine industry, to
assist with the establishment of new
farmers from previously disadvantaged
groups, and to promote the development
of farm worker communities.
In 2001, the merger of the two major
producing wholesalers, Stellenbosch
Farmers’ Winery and Distillers Corporation,
to form a new liquor giant, Distell, took
place. Today, Distell’s brands are sold
in over 100 countries throughout the
world. Wines of South Africa (WOSA),
an independent, not-for-profit company
formed in Stellenbosch in 2000, represents
all South African wine exporters and
promotes their wines abroad, with the
aim of building Brand South Africa. In
2004, the wine world saw another major
development, with the announcement
of the merger between Stellenbosch
Vineyards and Vinfruco under the new
company, Omnia Wines. Relaunched in
2006 as “The Company of Wine People”,
this brought into being another major
player that is involved in the entire process
from vineyard to consumer, locally and
internationally.
FACTS AND FIGURES
The total area under bearing vines (wine
and table grapes) is approximately 112 700
8 9
of the world’s foremost wine-producing
countries and exports continue to increase
as consumers discover the excellent wines
of the Cape.
BIODIVERSITY AND
WINE INITIATIVE
About 90% of South Africa’s wine
production occurs within the Cape Floral
Kingdom (CFK), the smallest and richest
plant kingdom on earth. This has been
recognised internationally as a global
biodiversity hotspot, and the most
important areas have been listed as a
World Heritage site.
As one of the richest yet most threatened
reservoirs of plant and animal life on earth,
conservation is critical. With the boom in
wine exports during the past decade, there
has been concern within the conservation
sector that some of the region’s most
vulnerable natural habitat (Renosterveld
and lowland fynbos) might be targeted
for vineyard expansion.
This is what gave rise to the pioneering
initiative to incorporate biodiversity best
practices into the SA wine industry – known
as the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI)
– in 2004. This partnership between the
SA wine industry and the conservation
sector serves to contribute to sustainable
hectares (excluding sultana), ranking South
Africa 14th in the world. The average annual
wine grape crop yield is 772 litres per gross
ton, the total crush averaging about 1.3
million tons annually. Producing 3.6% of
global production volumes, South Africa
ranks seventh in the world (statistics as at
the end of 2006).
Of the 3667 primary grape producers in
the country, 41.9% produce 100 tons or less
and 35.8% between 101 and 500 tons. In
2009, a total of 604 cellars produced wine
in South Africa. Of the 57 producer cellars,
39 crushed more than 10 000 tons and of
the 524 private cellars, 469 crushed less
than 1 000 tons.
It is significant to note that the wine
industry directly and indirectly supports
some 275 606 people, including farm
labourers and those involved in packaging,
retailing and wine tourism. The wine
industry contributes about R26.2 billion to
the country’s GDP (including tourism), with
about R14.2 billion remaining in the Western
Cape to benefit its residents. Annually an
estimated R4.3 billion (turnover) is also
generated indirectly through tourism in
the winelands.
Today, South African wines are proud
to take their place next to the products
wine production through the adoption of
strategic biodiversity guidelines and to
minimise the further loss of threatened
natural habitat, thus conserving the
country’s unique natural heritage for future
generations.
South Africa’s Biodiversity & Wine Initiative
currently has 113, 127 hectares under
conservation, exceeding the total amount
of national vine plantings.
In 2010, a new official Wine of Origin seal
was issued by the Wine and Spirit Board
reflecting those cellars that qualify for the
Integrity and Sustainability guidelines.
HISTORY OF CAPE WINES
10 11
Eberbach in Germany. History has shown
that this event has helped to stimulate
interest in South African wines among
connoisseurs and the wine-loving public,
both in South Africa and further afield.
To ensure fair distribution of rare wines
Local and international wine buyers and
connoisseurs have gathered at Nederburg
every year to savour, evaluate and buy the
cream of South Africa’s wines, many of
them outstanding old wines available in
only very limited quantities. The auction
thereby offers a fair means of distribution
of these wines.
At the first auction in 1975, there were 15
wines on offer from five participants. This
year, there will be 159 items (4 203 cases)
from 69 participants (brands, estates and
wineries). Last year, 162 wines from 73
participants were auctioned. The general
average price paid per case has risen from
R19.21 in 1975 to R1 084 (or R1 505 per 9-litre
case) in 2010.
The premier event on the South African wine
calendar, the annual auction of rare Cape
wines has been organised by Nederburg
since March 1975. This year sees the 37th
Nederburg Auction. Over the years it has
developed into an international event, where
major local and overseas wine buyers bid
for a stringently selected range of the finest
wines produced by the Cape’s top estates,
wineries and cellars. As the oldest auction
in the New World of wine, the Nederburg
Auction is a tribute to the endeavours
of South African winemakers over three
centuries to improve their wines.
OBJECTIVES
An incentive to greater wine standards
The viticulturist runs great risks in producing
a truly noble wine. The Nederburg Auction
is an attempt to provide due recognition
and rewards for these efforts – acting as a
showcase for the best that South African
vintners can produce.
Developing an awareness of South
African wine
The annual auctions at Nederburg have
placed South Africa firmly on the wine map
of the world. It is now recognised as one of
the world’s five major wine auctions, thus
fulfilling a similar objective to the auctions
of Hospices de Beaune in France and Kloster
Last year, to honour the heritage of the
auction, a selection of special old vintages
dating back to the 1970s was offered by
the original five participants from the 1975
inaugral event. These rare gems, called
Heritage Wines, were sold at the start
of the Saturday auction. This year the
auction continues the tradition of offering
unique, extremely rare wine items in a
new category called Private Collection.
This category serves to accommodate
exceptional wines that are available in
extremely small quantities, from producers
who have literally been treasuring their
last few bottles for an event such as this.

AUCTIONEER
Anthony Barne MW from Bonhams in
London takes up the hammer for the
second time at the 37th Nederburg Auction.
He is only the third auctioneer in the
history of the Nederburg Auction to play
this vital role, following in the footsteps of
the legendary auctioneer Patrick Grubb
MW (1975 – 2005) and Stephan Welz
(2006 – 2009).
Anthony Barne made the small step from
the army to the wine trade in 1978, having
developed the interest while serving on
the Governor of Gibraltar’s staff.
His wine trade career started in a wine
shop, followed by a brief spell working
at Domaine Thenard in Burgundy and
Seppelts in South Australia. His career until
1992 was in mail order and wine buying,
first with Hicks & Don, where he passed
the Master of Wine exam in 1985 and for
whom he still acts as buying consultant,
and then Harveys of Bristol.
Since then he has been a wine auctioneer,
currently working for Bonhams in London
as UK Head of Wine. As an auctioneer,
Anthony’s main pre-occupation is with the
classic wine regions of France and also
Vintage Port and Madeira, but he has many
other interests, including Austria, for which
he is a judge at the Decanter World Wine
Awards, Germany, Tokaji and Australia.
The impression made by the tastings that
he did of the Nederburg Auction entries
both in 2010 and 2011 have turned him into
a walking (and talking) advertisement for
the wines of South Africa.
1. NEDERBURG
TRIBUTE SHIRAZ 2007
A SET OF WINES DONATED BY
RAZVAN MACICI ON BEHALF
OF NEDERBURG
Celebrated winemaker Razvan Macici
created a singular micro-cuvée to mark the
35th anniversary of the Nederburg Auction
and 350 years of wine at the Cape in 2009.
Just 300 litres of the 2007 Shiraz, from a
single vineyard block in Philadelphia, have
been made and labelled Tribute to honour
all the legendary names in winemaking
who preceded Nederburg’s current
cellar team and who have served as their
inspiration, as well as to acknowledge the
many other great names in the annals of
South African winemaking.
The hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit,
rich in colour with a wonderful balance
between ripe tannins, fruit and acidity,
came from the same vineyard block that
earned Nederburg the Rosemount Trophy
at the 2007 International Wine & Spirit
Competition for producing the world’s best
Shiraz. That particular wine, a 2005 Manor
House Shiraz, went on to win many other
international and local awards.
The 2007 Tribute Shiraz has spent 24
months in new wood.
The Nederburg charity sale is an integral part
of the Nederburg Auction and forms part of
the official catalogue. While the commercial
part of the auction is only open to registered
licensees, all guests are encouraged to
register for the charity auction by means
of a credit card imprint. A bidding paddle
will then be issued at Information.
The charity sale offers unusual wine items,
including many collectors’ items. Over the
past twenty years, the charity auction
has raised more than R3 million for its
beneficiaries, the Hospice Palliative Care
Association, the Organ Donor Foundation
and Mothers to Mothers.
Last year’s charity auction raised much-
needed funds for three community-
orientated organisations; the Goedegedacht
Trust, the Pebbles Project Trust and
World Vision SA in Mbekweni. This year,
consideration will once again be given
to a range of locally-based community
projects. For further information visit
www.nederburgauction.co.za
The charity auction will be held in the
auction hall at the close of the Nederburg
Auction, prior to the luncheon.
CHARITY AUCTION
16 17
Three special sets were created, comprising
individually wrapped and cased bottles in
the following sizes: 750 ml; 1.5-; 3-; 6-; 9-; 12-;
15-; and 18-litres (i.e. a total of 65.25 litres
of wine per set). This is the last set to be
offered on the Nederburg charity auction.
2. VEGA SICILIA UNICO 1998,
RIBEIRA DEL DOUERO
A MAGNUM DONATED BY
VEGA SICILIA
A special magnum of Unico 1998 from the
Bodegas Vega Sicilia winery, located in the
Ribera del Duero Denominacion de Origen
in the north of Spain, of which just over
2000 bottles were produced. This iconic
Spanish wine, made by winemaker Javier
Ausanz, spent about eight years in wood.
Considered to be the top wine produced
in Spain, the grapes for this vintage come
from the oldest vines on the property
and in its composition, in addition to
Tempranillo, are Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot. It is a lively red wine that spent 10
years in the winery before its release, and
has a maturation potential of 50 years or
more. The Wine Advocate, which gave this
wine a rating of 98 points, describes it as
“purple-colored with a complex bouquet
of wood smoke, violets, Asian spices,
mineral, blueberry, and assorted black
fruits. This is followed by a full-bodied,
dense, loaded wine with gobs of sweet
fruit, great concentration, and layers of
flavor. It will continue to evolve for another
5-7 years and drink well through 2040+.”
2. SADIE FAMILY WINES
A 10-BOTTLE COLLECTION
OF COLUMELLA 2000 TO 2009
DONATED BY EBEN SADIE
This is the only case of its kind and was
specially put together by The Sadie
Family Wines for the charity auction,
and comprises 10 bottles of Columella
from the 2000 to 2009 vintages.
This year is the first decade of the
celebrated Columella wine produced by
The Sadie Family Wines in the Paardeberg
mountains of the Swartland region. The
Columella has proven over the past decade
to be one of the most sought after and
best-performing wines out of South
Africa in the international arena. Due to
the limited productions of the wine, it is
almost impossible to find some of the
older vintages on the open market and a
rare case of the historic 10-year line of the
development of this limited wine is a rarity.
The Columella is a blend of Syrah
and Mourvédre from eight different
CHARITY AUCTION
parcels of un-irrigated vineyards in
very extreme and isolated locations.
The Columella wine is a true wine of terroir
and the wine has always been about place
above progress.
4. MC WILLIAMS
A 2-BOTTLE COLLECTION
DONATED BY DUIMPIE BAYLY,
FROM THE DISTELL TABERNACLE
WINE COLLECTION
The McWilliam family name stands for
a long, rich history of award-winning
winemaking in the Hunter Valley north
of Sydney in Australia. One of Australia’s
oldest family wineries, McWilliam’s Wines
has six generations and more than 130
years of winemaking experience.
A special set of two 750 ml bottles, dating
back to the early seventies, will be sold,
comprising of a 1972 Cabernet/Shiraz and
a 1973 Hermitage.
5. ZONNEBLOEM
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1989
1 X 5-LITRE BOTTLE DONATED
BY DEON BOSHOFF,
ZONNEBLOEM CELLARMASTER
The history of Zonnebloem dates back to
the early 1700s, when wine was already
being produced on the Zonnebloem farm
in Simondium. During 1930, the focus
switched to white wines, but fortuitously
in 1940, the owner, John de Villiers, put
his expertise into making red wines again.
The range was certified in 1973, with
the introduction of the Wine of Origin
legislation, with grapes sourced from
select vineyards located throughout the
Stellenbosch region.
6. CHATEAU LATOUR 1971
1 X 750ML BOTTLE
DONATED BY DUIMPIE BAYLY,
FROM THE DISTELL TABERNACLE
WINE COLLECTION
Château Latour, one of the famous
First Growth under the 1855 Bordeaux
Classification lies at the very southeastern
tip of the commune of Pauillac in the
Médoc region to the north-west of
Bordeaux, at its border with Saint-Julien,
and only a few hundred metres from the
banks of the Gironde estuary. A garrison
fort was built 300 metres from the
estuary to guard against attack during
the Hundred Years’ War.
With time, the tower mutated to La Tour.
Unfortunately, the tower does not exist
anymore, and the current tower is no longer
the same. The estate has 78 hectares of
18 19
vineyard, of which a 47-hectare portion
near the château is named l’Enclos, where
fruit exclusive to the grand vin is grown.
The grand vin Chateau Latour, typically
a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon,
20% Merlot, with the remainder Petit
Verdot and Cabernet Franc, normally has
an annual production of 18,000 cases.
The 1971 vintage was a good year in
Bordeaux, much smaller than the previous
year and although the wines from the right
bank matured better than from the left
bank, this vintage of La Tour has been
regarded as phenomenal. The fill height
of the bottle is still perfect.
7. LA MOTTE SHIRAZ 2008
1 X 5-LITRE BOTTLE DONATED
BY EDMUND TERBLANCHE
This wine boasts numerous accolades,
including gold at the 2010 Santam Classic
Wine Trophy Show, a South African
Airways premium listing in the same year,
and receiving a four and half star rating in
Platter’s SA Wine Guide. It was produced
from grapes originating from vineyards
in various regions in the Cape winelands –
Walker Bay (29%), Swartland (27%), Paarl
(26%) and Elim (18%).
The 2008 vintage shows a prominent
varietal-dominant spicy nose with clove,
nutmeg and black pepper backed by
mulberry fruit and some leathery tones. The
palate is medium-bodied with a juicy mid-
palate and a complex, layered mineral finish.
8. CHATEAU D’YQUEM 1986
1 X 750ML BOTTLE DONATED
BY ANTHONY BARNE MW
Most would say that Chateau d’Yquem
stands head and shoulders above any other
sweet wine in the world and to drink it
with with blue cheese or foie gras is an
unforgettable experience. This wine is
a Premier Cru Supérieur wine from the
Sauternes region in the southern part of
the Bordeaux vineyards.
This vintage was given a 98-point rating
in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate of
January 1998:
“..This is a fascinating effort. With greater
evidence of botrytis than the colossal
1983, but less power and alcohol, the
1986 Yquem tastes reminiscent of the 1975,
only more precocious, as well as more
concentrated. Several highly respected
Bordeaux negociants who are Yquem
enthusiasts claim the 1986 Yquem is the
greatest wine produced at the property
since the legendary 1937. Its enthralling
bouquet of pineapples, sauteed hazelnuts,
vanillin, and ripe apricots is breathtaking.
CHARITY AUCTION
Compellingly concentrated, the breadth
as well as depth of flavor seemingly know
no limits. This full-bodied, powerful, yet
impeccably balanced Yquem should
provide memorable drinking for 40-55
more years. Like the 1983, this is another
winemaking tour de force...”
9. FLEUR DU CAP LASZLO 2004
1 X 750ML BOTTLE
DONATED BY ANDREA
FREEBOROUGH, FLEUR DU
CAP CELLARMASTER
Exclusive signature blend pays tribute to
wine pioneer Dr Julius Laszlo. Laszlo 2004
is a fitting tribute to the late Dr Julius Laszlo,
the innovative, visionary Cellarmaster at
Die Bergkelder who almost single-handedly
catapulted South African winemaking into
the international league in the 1980’s.
Dr Laszlo was one of the key protagonists in
finding new plant material and establishing
noble cultivars at the Cape and broke new
ground by implementing the use of small
oak barrels for the maturation of red wines.
Crafted by the Fleur du Cap winemaking
team at Die Bergkelder, Laszlo 2004 is
an opulent Bordeaux-style blend of the
finest barrels comprising 50% Merlot, 38%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec and 6%
Petit Verdot. The wine was matured for
18 months in 300 litre French oak barrels.
Laszlo 2004 has an incredible deep purple
colour with a youthful hue. The initial
aromas of cedar and tobacco spice are
enhanced by nuances of cinnamon and
cloves. This spiciness is balanced with
plum and fruit cake aromas complemented
by delectable mint chocolate. These
alluring flavours follow through onto the
palate with an elegant complexity, crisp
acidity and racy tannins that will enable
this wine to develop further over time.
It was awarded a Double Gold Veritas
medal in 2008.

SOCIETE CIVILE DU DOMAINE

WINE COLLECTION
Échezeaux is an Appellation d’origine
contrôlée (AOC that was created in 1936)
and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in
the Côte de Nuits sub region of Burgundy.
Échezeaux borders on Clos de Vougeot
and its wall in the east and on the Grand
Échezeaux in the east.
The 1966 was a very good to excellent
vintage in almost all of the great
20 21
wine regions including Burgundy. The
old wines from Échezeaux have the
staying power and are often described
as having a beautiful mouthfeel, silky,
medium-bodied, elegant and absolutely
gorgeous. The fill height of the bottle
is still very good.
11. STELLENRUST TIMELESS
SPECIAL RESERVE 2004
A 5-LITRE BOTTLE
DONATED BY TERTIUS
BOSHOFF, STELLENRUST
CELLARMASTER
The Stellenrust Timeless resembles the pride
of the estate with extra effort being put
in to ensure that each bottle lives up to
its name for being timeless. It is a blend
of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from
both their properties in the Helderberg
and Bottelary. A blend is made up after 12
months in 100% new French oak and the
blended wine kept in barrels for another
12 months in the same barrels. Only five
bottles of five litres were bottled and this
is the first release of such a bottle for a
charity auction. The others will remain in
the library at Stellenrust for release at a
much later stage, also for charity. The wine
has won the Calyon Trophy for Bordeaux
blends, received a Michelangelo gold medal
and awarded four stars in Wine magazine.
12. OREMUS - OREMUS TOKAJI
ESZENCIA 2000
A 375ML BOTTLE
DONATED BY BRITT AND
JANÅKE JOHANSSON
The Tokaji Eszencia is one of the most
exclusive, sought after wines in the world.
Unlike virtually all other wines, it maintains
its quality and drinkability for 200 years
or more.
This exceptional wine, which was given
to the Tsars before they died in order to
send them on a pleasant trip to heaven, is
incredibly difficult to forget once tasted.
Extremely sweet (it has a residual sugar
content of 468 grams), with enormous
acidity – 18 grams per litre – it perfectly
balances the rare combination of sweetness
and acidity, offering a spectacular richness
and an unequalled flavour, including honey
and apricots, made even more intense on
the palate due to botrytis.
The wine is a blend of Furmint (50%),
Harslevelu (30%), Zeta (10%) and Muscat
(10%), and made only from the juice that
runs off naturally from the vats in which
the grapes are collected during harvesting.
The berries for this particular vintage
fermented up to 3% alcohol, which took
three years to achieve (incredibly the
sugar content is so high, the juice almost
can’t ferment).
Just a few hundred bottles (between
200 and 300) of the 2000 vintage were
produced, reinforcing its status as a unique
collector’s item.

One of South Africa’s iconic wine estates,
Alto exclusively produces red wines high
up in the renowned ‘golden triangle’ of
the Helderberg Mountains. Granite slopes,
ample sunshine and cooling afternoon
breezes provide a unique terroir that
ensures slow ripening of the grapes to
preserve their complex flavours. Here,
Schalk van der Westhuizen crafts bold,
world-class red wines. Elusive by nature,
Schalk prefers making wine for people
to enjoy rather than winning awards, yet
his reds, particularly the Alto Rouge,
garner countless accolades from local and
international competitions.

Already into its sixth vintage, new
participant Ataraxia continues to excel
on the national and international wine
scene with a string of rave reviews for
the three wines currently making up the
range: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay
and Serenity, a red blend. Situated near
Hermanus, a scenic drive through this
popular Walker Bay wine growing area
brings one to Ataraxia, in the foothills
of the majestic Babylonstoren. Here, co-
owner, winemaker and viticulturist Kevin
Grant fine-tunes his three handcrafted
wines made from grapes sourced from
prime wine growing areas.
The winery’s logo captures the ‘spirit’ of
the place that is Ataraxia: a tranquil and
serene setting, where small vineyard blocks
are carefully nurtured on the many varied
aspects and slopes, which are interspersed
with wild meadows of indigenous mountain
flora. The name Ataraxia is a term used
to describe emotional tranquillity - the
freedom from disturbance that constitutes
the first step towards the achievement of
pleasure. It’s really about conveying the
very essence of what drinking good wine
does for and to us as human beings.

Bellevue Wine Estate - known as the cradle
of Pinotage - was established in 1701 and
has been in the Morkel family since 1861.
However, it was P. K. Morkel who, in around
1940, did groundbreaking work on Bellevue,
turning it into a wine estate. The current
owner, Dirkie Morkel - fourth generation -
upgraded the existing wine cellar in 1998
to a modern, quality-driven facility.
In 1953, P.K. Morkel took the bold step to
plant Pinotage. Bellevue started bottling
wine under its own name in 1999 and
since then has become one of the leading
Pinotage producers in the world. The Morkel
Pinotage has won double gold Veritas
numerous times and also did well in the
Absa Top Ten Pinotage Competition. The
estate produces other interesting single
cultivar wines such as Malbec and Petit
Verdot, and the red blends Atticus (Cape
blend) and Tumara (Bordeaux-style blend).
Bellevue cultivates approximately 160
hectares of vineyards, but bottle only a
small percentage of the total crop - the
balance is sold in bulk.

Making its debut on this year’s Nederburg
Auction, Capaia is situated approximately
15km from the cool Atlantic Ocean at
altitudes of between 170m and 270m
in the Philadelphia region. Wines are

Capaia territory. Grapes are harvested
at full ripeness, with great importance
placed on the quality of the skins and
pips. Red grapes will be left for natural
fermentation on skins for 30 to 40 days
in 150-year-old French Oak fermentation
casks before being moved to French Oak
barrels. The flagship and trademark of the

Chateau Libertas, known affectionately as
the grandfather of South African reds, is
one of South Africa’s longest established
wine labels. First released by Stellenbosch
Farmers’ Winery (SFW) in 1932, it has been
made ever since, changing remarkably
little since its debut. The art of blending
cultivars has achieved the ultimate in
creating a taste and consistency respected
by winelovers all over the world.
In the 1930s, sweet, fortified wines and
brandies were universally popular, but
with his medical background, Dr William
Charles Winshaw, the founder of SFW,
knew that natural wine was more beneficial
for a healthy lifestyle. As no such wine
was available then, he set about making
his own. The result was Chateau Libertas,
which began a new wine-drinking trend
that still lives on more than 70 years later.
The wine has regularly attained excellent
prices at the Nederburg Auction.

Great wines, magnificent vines. Few places
on earth offer such a spectacular outlook.
Nestled atop Tygerberg Hill, De Grendel
showcases Table Mountain, the city and
the seaboard all in one landscape. Just
20 minutes from the city, be greeted
by a dramatic expanse of land that is
home to their vineyards, carefully crafted
by Winemaker’s Guild member Charles
Hopkins, producing prestigious wines of
consistently exceptional quality.
One of Cape Town’s oldest farms, De
Grendel has a magnificent centuries-old
history within the Graaff family. Perfectly
situated on high, sea-facing slopes
overlooking unmatched vistas of Cape
Town, it is the only vineyard in the country
that is 350m above sea level and only seven
kilometres from the sea.
This elevated position is not only majestic,
but also forms an integral part of the micro-
climate that shapes their elegant wines.
Their vines benefit from the south-facing
aspects and the close moderating effects
of the ocean – advantages that are the
product of the site. In their viticulture and
wine-making, their goal is the expression
of the character of this distinctive position.

All wine estates in the Western Cape
are beautiful and have a unique terroir.
However, De Morgenzon is the most
extraordinary of them all. Their slopes
rise from about 200m to 400m above
sea level and its vistas embrace Cape
Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point,
Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland
mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg
with the ocean as a backdrop.
In Spring, specially chosen wildflowers
flourish between their vines. They have no
doubt that a biodiverse and ecologically
sensitive environment produces infinitely
better grapes and the beauty of their
gardens is captured in every bottle of
their wine.
Baroque music is piped through the
vineyards constantly and they believe that
the power of music positively influences
the ripening process.
The De Morgenzon team is committed to
excellence and focus on crafting wines
which express the estates’ terroir and fruit
within a classic structure - they believe that
the finest South African wines combine
New World-style fruit with Old World-
style elegance.

Minute attention to the finest detail in every
aspect of grape growing and wine making

immaculate vineyard selections by infrared

the hand harvesting of grapes, no pumps

On 3 October 1752 the Hageveld left Texel,
an island north of Amsterdam with 143
people onboard and arrived in Cape Town
21 March 1753. The original Deetlefs was a
German soldier/seafarer by the name of
Johannes Deetlefs who reputedly arrived
in SA in 1753 after either falling overboard
or being put ashore in Saldanha Bay
because he was a bit “difficult”… Whatever
the truth of that tale, the family business
breathes over 200 years of history.
New participant Deetlefs is currently
the third oldest wine estate in South
Africa under ownership of the same
family (Est. 1822). Deetlefs Estate has
grown substantially over the past 40
years and was restructured in 1992 to
Deetlefs
form the Deetlefs Wine Group. Today,
the Group has substantial experience in
the production, bottling, packaging and
efficient supply chain management of
wines. A dynamic, deadline-driven focus
enables the team to successfully meet
the highly demanding needs of national
and international customers.
“Each of the generations contributed in
their own unique way. A golden thread
runs through our history, reflecting a boldly
individual approach, a strong set of values
and a long-term focus. Currently it is my
responsibility to create more opportunities
for generations to come and to tell the
story…” - Kobus Deetlefs.
Delheim’s cellar, situated in the Simonsberg
Ward of Stellenbosch, is owned by the
legendary ‘Spatz’ Sperling and his
family, and produces a wide range of
internationally acclaimed wines in an
ecologically sustainable way. German
gemütlichkeit is the order of the day at this
beautiful property – most of the people are
related, so expect to be treated like family.
Taste wines in the quaint ‘Downstairs’ wine
cellar, and be taken on a cellar tour to see
where the wines are made. The restaurant
offers a selection of dishes ranging from
cheese platters to traditional German and
South African food. Eat al fresco on the
garden terraces in summer with a view
clear across to Table Mountain in the
distance, or cozy up inside by the fireplace
in winter. The restaurant serves breakfast,
lunch and tea, and also caters for small
private functions. Child-friendly with a
special kiddies menu. Booking essential,

Diemersdal Wine Estate is one of the oldest
farms in the Durbanville Wine Valley and
is situated in the shadows of Dorstberg.
The location of the vineyards is particularly
suitable for producing high-quality wines.
Making wine runs in the family at Diemersdal.
Six generations of winemakers with one
passion have made fine wines at the estate
since the 1800s. Diemersdal is renowned for
its award-winning range of red and white
wines, enjoyed locally and exported to the
far corners of the globe. The diverse soils
and slopes provide the optimum conditions
for making premium-quality wines with
prominent varietal character.
The dryland vineyards develop
concentrated flavours, uniformly ripened
by the cooling sea-breezes from the
Atlantic Ocean. The result is a vintner’s
repertoire that offers six single varietals
and three distinctive blends – classic wines
that combine the best of the Old and the
New Worlds.
Diemersdal
Diemersfontein, in its first ten years of
production, won the International Wine
Challenge Best SA Red Wine Trophy; the
Old Mutual Trophy for Most Successful
Producer; and three successive years public
rating of best red wine at Winex for the
Diemersfontein Coffee/Chocolate Pinotage.
The Carpe Diem range is their Flagship
range of wines, produced from the best
blocks on the farm with the Carpe Diem
Malbec as one of the niche wines, made in
only small lots each year. The 2005 vintage
won Gold in 2008 at the Michaelangelo
International Wine Awards. The Wellington

Located on the slopes of the Tygerberg
from where it overlooks Table Bay and
Table Mountain, Durbanville Hills derives
great benefit from its close proximity
to both the Indian and Atlantic oceans
and their gift of swirling mists that drift
inland on gentle sea breezes. This cool-
climate area offers ideal conditions for
the grapes to develop their full-flavoured
and intense character.
The winemaking team consists of
cellarmaster Martin Moore, red winemaker
Wilhelm Coetzee and white winemaker
Gunther Kellerman, and together they
produce three wine ranges.
The cellar firmly believes in giving
back and received the Ethical Award
at the 2011 The Drinks Business Green
Awards in recognition of their pro-active
involvement in the community, improving
school facilities and empowering farm
workers. The cellar is a member of the
Biodiversity & Wine Initiative and protects
more than 220ha of renosterveld found

Inspired by nature and shaped by the Cape
Floral Kingdom, Fleur du Cap wines are
handcrafted with minimal interference at
The Bergkelder by dedicated winemakers
Pieter Badenhorst and Justin Corrans, and
cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough.
Founded in 1967, this famous “cellar in
the mountain”, situated on the slopes
of the Papegaaiberg on the outskirts of
Stellenbosch, was the first of its kind in
South Africa and pioneered many new
innovations such as maturation in small oak
barrels. In 1998, The Bergkelder launched
the premier range of Fleur du Cap
Unfiltered wines known for their superior
quality. Meticulous vineyard selection and
an overriding passion for winemaking have
led to the creation of quality wines that
capture the highly sought-after qualities

On auction for the first time, Fryer’s Cove
Vineyards is a family-owned business with
partners Wynand Hamman (winemaker)
and Jan van Zyl (viticulturist) as well as
Jan and Pieter Laubscher (shareholders).
The vineyards are located 300km north
of Cape Town, between Doring Bay and
Strandfontein, on the west coast. The
vineyards are 800m from the coastline and
uses the cool misty air from the Atlantic
to its advantage.
Wines produced are the Bamboes Bay
Sauvignon Blanc, Bamboes Bay Pinot Noir
and the Bay to Bay Sauvignon Blanc (made
from grapes sourced in the Lamberts Bay
area). The first vineyards were planted
in 1999 and the first wines made in 2001.
Up to 2010 the wines were made in the
Stellenbosch area, but in 2011 Fryer’s
Cove opened its own cellar in the Doring
Bay Harbour in the old fish factory that is
currently being renovated.
According to Wynand Hamman the wines
are excellent and one of the biggest
advantages of the new cellar is that the
grapes do not have to be transported to
Stellenbosch anymore.

The birth of the South African wine
industry began in the verdant Constantia
Valley, founded by Simon van der Stel in
1685. Groot Constantia is the oldest wine
producing farm in the New World, boasting
a proud heritage of over 325 years and is
one of the original five participants at the
first Nederburg Auction in 1975.
Groot Constantia has had an uninterrupted
record as a wine farm and its name is
forever linked to the most famous wines
that were first made in South Africa.
Today the estate is owned by the Groot
Constantia Trust. The aim is to produce top
quality wines, reflecting the full potential of
the farm, and to use the profits to protect
and maintain this treasure, for thousands
of visitors and for the future generations.
Boela Gerber was appointed as winemaker
in 2001. In his ten years he has excelled by
winning the Diners Club Young Winemaker
of the year in 2002, and in 2011 received the
Bacchus Trophy and was named the overall
winner scooping the Classic Wine Trophy

Hartenberg, the acclaimed family owned
wine estate dating back to the late 17th
century in the verdant Bottelary Hills Valley
north of Stellenbosch, is known for making
outstanding wines that consistently deliver
in terms of quality and ageability.
Their impressive underground maturation
cellar, the largest privately owned cellar of
its kind in South Africa with a capacity of
around 150 000 bottles, allows winemaker
Carl Schultz, who has been at Hartenberg
for the past 18 years, to hold back his red
wines to mature under optimal conditions
prior to release. Carl, who manages to
harness the very best from Hartenberg’s
varying soil types and micro climates,
believes that only after four years do the
Hartenberg red wines start to give one
a glimpse of the locked away potential
lurking in the bottle.
Hartenberg’s classically crafted Bordeaux-
style blend, The Mackenzie 2003, is
named after the family who have been
the custodians of this Stellenbosch wine

Iona is situated on a mountain plateau,
450m above sea level, overlooking the
Atlantic Ocean 60km east of Cape Town
in the Elgin Ward. The farm was named
“IONA” after an island off the West Coast
of Scotland. The Gunns can trace their
ancestry to the Vikings that landed in
Scotland in the 900s, hence the Viking
long boat emblem on their labels.
The first vineyards were planted in 1998
and their initial research confirmed that
Iona is one of South Africa’s coolest
vineyards, with harvesting times up
to eight weeks later than other wine
producing areas. The Sauvignon Blanc
is harvested in late March and reds in late
April/early May. The cool climate ensures
long, slow physiological ripening of the
grapes under ideal growing conditions,
with the sugar, ph, acid and flavour
compounds being in balance to produce
elegant, low alcohol wines of distinction.
Iona’s Sauvignon Blancs are making a
name for themselves as one of the finest
examples of this grape variety in the world.

Scottish Parliament and the 85th birthday
of the South African icon, former President
Nelson Mandela.

of food styles. These flagship wines from
Ken Forrester have achieved iconic
status worldwide.
Their numerous awards include five star
ratings for The FMC and The “T” Noble Late

This historic estate, which was recently
sold to foreign investors, abuts the Table
Mountain National Park. Here the team
have embarked on their own journey of
discovery, much like the early Cape settlers
and seafarers.
The conversion to environmentally
sustainable farming practices, now into its
third year, ‘is a steep but thrilling learning
curve’, admits winemaker Adam Mason,
although the positive effects are already
apparent in the improved wine quality.
The restoration of the estate’s natural
habitat will complement this process of
transition. The legendary Vin de Constance
continues to be the focus of fascinating
experimentation, in an attempt to emulate
the making of the original elixir. And ‘a
bit of fun’ – making husk brandy from the
Vin de Constance grape skins – ended up
winning design-industry accolades for its
eye-catching packaging.

L’Avenir is situated on the foothills of
the Simonsberg Mountain, South Africa’s
premier wine-growing region.
Their wines have a reputation for
their elegant structure, while showing
accessibility from youth throughout their
maturation. Grapes are grown, handpicked
and vinified, and the wines matured, bottled
and labelled on the farm itself. Aged in
specifically chosen French oak barrels,
stored in a cool underground maturation
cellar, the wines integrate delicate flavour
nuances with complexity.
Maintaining classical sophistication,
pedigree and elegance is a hallmark of
L’Avenir wines, and has been given due
recognition through numerous awards and
accolades, as well as consistently receiving

In years gone by, as a tribute to SA’s own
cultivar, Pinotage, and to Lanzerac, the first
to market Pinotage wine on a commercial
scale world-wide, the opening and closing
items at the Nederburg Auction was
traditionally a Lanzerac Pinotage.
Founded in 1692, the estate has often
changed hands, and winemakers have
come and gone, but it still remains an
award-winning cellar, and since 1958 a five-
star, award-winning country hotel. Christo
Wiese acquired the historic property in
1991 and has been the driving force behind
uncompromising quality in all facets of
the operation, with his visionary approach
extending to benefit other operations in
the wine industry.
Wynand Lategan, winemaker since 2005,
has already produced award-winning
wines. He possesses both a passion for the
vine and excellent wine-making skills. With
a long, proud history and a true pioneer in
the South African wine industry, Lanzerac

legacy in his capable hands.

Le Bonheur wine estate, situated on the
northern slopes of Klapmuts Kop – about 13
kilometres from the town of Stellenbosch –
was founded by a member of the De Villiers
family in the 1790s. Of the 163 hectares on

vines, and include 50% white and 50%

A traditionalist, current winemaker
Sakkie Kotze makes elegant wines with
a solid structure that age well, from the

the northern reaches of the Simonsberg.
Using only grapes that are hand-picked and

Le Riche Wines was founded by Etienne
le Riche in 1996. Coming from a successful
career in the South African wine industry,
Etienne decided to create a winery where
he could express the cultivar he had grown
to love and respect, Cabernet Sauvignon.
The approach was simple, to illustrate the
nuances of Stellenbosch Cabernet’s as best
possible. The resulting wines have shown
great elegance and class, consistently
proving to be of superb quality and

Crow’s Nest Boutique Winery, owned by
Marcel de Reuck, has been producing wine
since 2002. He has proved his winemaking
skills by producing only high quality wines
that have received gold medals from his
entire first vintage. Marcel started from
humble beginnings as a garagiste.
The estate has only 11 hectare of vineyards,
south and south-west facing, with stunning
sunset views over Table Mountain. This
area of Pearl’s Gate in Paarl has warm days
and cool evenings, perfect for Syrah and
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The winters
are cold, and the Atlantic cool air does
have an effect on their climate. Marcel and
only two labourers account for the entire
farming and winemaking process. “It’s hard
work but the medals and appreciation for
the wine has been a blessing” says Marcel.
Old classical wine styles are the order of
the day for the more discerning palate.

Meerendal, situated in Durbanville, is one
of the oldest wine estates in South Africa.
It was one of the first 14 wine estates to be
proclaimed by the Wine and Spirit Board
when the Wine of Origin legislation was
introduced in 1973.
It was bought by a South African
businessman in February 2004 and a multi-
million rand re-development programme
was launched to make it a world-class wine
estate and food destination.
Meerendal dates back to 1702, when the
farm was granted to Jan Meerland by
Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. By
1712, Meerland’s widow, Maria Stans, had
60 000 vines growing on the farm. When
the Starke family bought the farm in 1929,
Meerendal
only a small vineyard remained displaying
its potential as a wine farm and some of
the wheatfields were turned into vineyards
in the early 1930s.
The unique location and terroir of
Meerendal, in one of the coolest wine
regions in the Western Cape, is ideal for the
variety of noble cultivars that have been
planted – Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Pinot
Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Cellarmaster Liza Goodwin has been
making wine at Meerendal since 1998.
Meerendal has scooped up many top wine
awards over the past four years and is
exporting its quality wine to more than
12 countries.
The estate is well-known for its classy
function venue, the Barn and Lawn, that
is a popular venue for weddings and many
kinds of functions. There is also a quint
little chapel. The Manor House Restaurant
in the historic home is a firm favourite for
many visitors for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The name Monis has been closely linked
to the winemaking traditions in Paarl
since 1906, when the 24-year-old Roberto
Moni immigrated to South Africa from his
birthplace in Tuscany, Italy, where his family
were wine merchants.
After starting an import business called
the Italian Warehouse in 1906, he began
making his own range of fortified and
natural wines in a cellar purchased in Paarl.
This venture was such a success that he
changed the name of the enterprise to
Monis Wineries Ltd in 1921.
Winemaking had started on a small scale in
1919 and, by 1930, the red and white Monis
Chianti, produced to the time-honoured
Tuscany standard, had become South
Africa’s first everyday natural table wine.
In 1983 and 1984, a limited edition of
1948 Monis Collectors Port was released,
portraying rare old South African stamps
– the single and double stamp collections
– on the numbered labels. These wines
consistently fetch very high prices on the
Nederburg Auction, taking top prices for
Port in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1998, and
each year from 2002 to 2009.

unprecedented rating of five, five-star wines,
is South Africa’s most awarded winery.
Domestically and internationally
acknowledged for excellence, the winery
has shown an unerring ability to make
wines that connoisseurs and regular
winelovers really enjoy. The winery owes
its success to a meticulous attention to
detail in winegrowing and winemaking
across the range, as well as to continuous
innovation under cellarmaster Razvan

and Wilhelm Pienaar.
The team has extensive access to local and
international research and technology. It
exchanges research and best-practice on
an ongoing basis with its long-standing
network of supplier-growers. It also
works closely with research centres,
collaborating with academic institutions,
assisting in field studies and calling on
internationally renowned viticulturists.
Nederburg
Some of Nederburg’s own viticulturists
are selected for study abroad.
Domestically, regular study groups are
conducted to explore and assess new
technology and refine its application under
local conditions.
These initiatives provide the foundation
for the cellar team to consistently produce
finessed, classically-styled wines with
vibrant fruit flavours. Apart from the
mainstream varietals, they also work with
Italian cultivars like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo
and Barbera, while experimenting with
Mediterranean varieties well suited to
changing climatic conditions, such as
Tannat, Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre
and Carignan.
Established in 1791, Nederburg believes
that only by farming sustainably can the
way be assured for future wine-growers to
continue growing and making wine here,
over many more centuries to come.

New participant Oranje River Wine
Cellars is situated in South Africa’s, and
possibly the world’s, most unique wine
growing region. For approximately 300
kilometers next to the Orange River near
the Northern Cape town of Upington, the
river has created a green oasis. Fertile
soils, fed by the life-giving waters of the
river, allow vineyards to flourish, bearing
quality grapes ideal for the making of fine
wines. The temperate climate and clean
desert air ensures that the grapes obtain
a fruitiness, from which smooth, aromatic
and extremely drinkable wines are made.
The white wines, Colombard, Chardonnay
and Chenin Blanc, are fruity; and the reds
are velvety, with Shiraz, Pinotage, Ruby
Cabernet and Cabernet Sauvignon leading
the way. The Oranje River Wine Cellars’
legendary fortified sweet wines are
Muscadel and Jerepiko, wines that have
seen the winery winning numerous awards.
Five wineries make up Oranje River Wine
Cellars: Keimoes, Kakamas, Grootdrink,
Upington and Groblershoop - a visit to
these is a memorable experience.

In 1905 Abraham van Velden founded
Overgaauw Wine Estate in the
Stellenbosch Valley, which had been
owned by his family since 1783.
Overgaauw is the longest established
family owned estate in the area, with
a legacy that lives on through four
generations. Abraham’s son David, took
over in 1945, followed by his son Braam
in 1978, and young David, Braam’s son,
joined the winemaking team in December
2002. After attaining a B.Com. at the
University of Stellenbosch, Braam left
for Germany and studied oenology and
viticulture at Geisenheim. On his return
in 1973 he joined his father and together
they embarked on a programme of
systematically replanting the vineyards.
Overgaauw
Overgaauw comprises 140 hectares on the
hillsides west of the town of Stellenbosch,
with 70 hectares under vineyard on slopes
facing south towards False Bay and the
Atlantic Ocean. The deep weathered
granite soils and cool sea breezes all
combine to create a microclimate ideally
suited to the cultivation of noble grape
varieties.Careful viticulture, low yields of
excellent cultivars, the best winemaking
and expert vinification promote the
creation of exceptional wines.
The older cellar has been expanded with
stainless steel tanks and the best
equipment. This includes a small barrel
maturation cellar, part of it underground,
with a capacity of 1 000 barrels.

Perdeberg winery was established in
1941. Their vineyards stretch across 2100
hectares at the foot of the Paardeberg
Mountain in the Agter-Paarl area and was
named after the Mountain Quagga that
used to roam the area.
Each vineyard is managed individually with
utmost precision and care, allowing Rex
Equus, which means “King of Horses”, to
be presented with pride.
Perdeberg Winery has a long tradition of
excellence in winemaking and they prefer
to set trends rather than follow them. They
never compromise the exceptional quality
of their wines, no matter what the market
- or Mother Nature - throws at them.

The Pinotage Association was first
introduced to the Nederburg Auction
in 2002 – when the last five sets of
their winning wines from the first Absa
Top Ten Pinotage Competition in 1997
were auctioned. This year, the tradition
continues with winning wines from the
2006 competition on offer.
The Association was founded in 1995 by a
number of Pinotage producers dedicated
to improving and promoting wine made
from this unique South African grape
variety. Pinotage came into being in 1925
when Professor Abraham Perold made a
successful cross between Pinot Noir and
Cinsaut (then locally known as Hermitage).
The designation “Pinotage” was first
used on a wine label during 1961 when
Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery marketed
the 1959 harvest made on the farm
Bellevue under the name Lanzerac. Its first
international recognition came at the 1991
International Wine & Spirit Competition
when Kanonkop Wine Estate was awarded
Pinotage Association
the Robert Mondavi Trophy for the best
red wine for its 1989 Pinotage, and its
winemaker, Beyers Truter, received the
title Winemaker of the Year.
Through the generous sponsorship of Absa
Bank, the Association was able to launch a
competition during 1997 to designate the
Top Ten Pinotage wines available annually
in commercial quantities.
The primary purpose of 10 winners instead
of only one, as in most other competitions,
is to give exposure to the whole spectrum
of the best Pinotage wines that are
locally available. During its 14 years of
existence, this competition has already
succeeded in creating a benchmark for
the development of distinctively styled
South African Pinotage wines to ensure
its uniqueness in the international wine
world. A limited number of sets of each
year’s winning wines are being marketed in
special presentation packages to generate
funds for the promotion of Pinotage and
research on Pinotage- related issues.

Plaisir de Merle was originally granted
to the Marais family of French Huguenot
descent in 1693. Situated on the slopes
of the Simonsberg Mountain, between
Paarl and Franschhoek, Plaisir de Merle
is a rare gem.
A Distell showpiece, this 974 hectare
estate in Simondium, Paarl, has earned
international acclaim for its white and red
wines. About 400 hectares are planted
with a variety of noble grape cultivars such
as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet
Franc, Shiraz and Malbec. An area of only
about 80 hectares of prime vineyards has
been set aside for the Plaisir de Merle cellar.
Cellarmaster Niel Bester, who has gained
fame in producing classically styled yet
accessible wines, attributes the success
of his wines to being able to work with
great fruit coming from a very unique
terrain, as well as the valuable input from
his viticulture team.
Niel believes in a hands-on approach and
the integration of vineyard with winemaking
practices to produce wines of unsurpassed
quality which are extremely sought-after
both locally and internationally.

This charismatic signature Méthode Cap
Classique wine is a tribute to Desiderius
Pongrácz, a nobleman and refugee from
the Hungarian uprising, whose sheer
genius and vision revitalised viticulture
at the Cape.
His was the gift of the “third eye” – the
ability of seeing the new in the familiar,
finding the unexpected in the traditional.
Witty and brilliant, whether it be in
Hungarian, German, French, Russian,
English or Afrikaans, his theories were fresh
and provocative – not only on viticulture,
but also music and history. He was stirred
by the symphonies of Beethoven and
impressed by the loyal intelligence of his
dachshunds. In this way, homage is paid
to this scholar and wine lover with the
celebrated Cap Classique that bears his
name, signature and family crest.
Composed entirely of the noble grape
varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this
elegant Cap Classique is crafted in the
classic French tradition.

Rijk’s Private Cellar is situated in
Tulbagh. The farm was bought in 1996
by Neville Dorrington.
Consultant viticulturist, Johan Wiese,
supervised the preparation and planting of
the initial 14 hectares of vines, identifying
the best sites for the different cultivars. In
1998, a further seven hectares of vineyards
were planted.
The first wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, was
released in August 2000, followed by a
Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc in
November of the same year. The first reds
were released in 2001, after spending 18
to 20 months in barrels.
Within a very short space of time, this
cellar has achieved great success, winning
gold and double gold medals at various
wine shows.
At Rijk’s Private Cellar the people take
pride in producing optimum quality
grapes from each vine with patience
and dedication. The grapes are picked
by hand in the cool of the night and the
cellarmaster follows the philosophy of
gentle handling and minimal interference
in the winemaking process.

Rustenberg is one of the most beautiful
wine farms in Stellenbosch, situated at
the foot of the Simonsberg Mountain. It
was originally granted by Willem Adriaan
van der Stel in 1682 to a German settler
and has been owned by the Barlow family
since 1941.
The estate has a record of unequalled
continuity in the South African wine
industry. Wine has been produced at
Rustenberg since 1692 and from 1892,
wine has been bottled in the cellar for an
unbroken period.
Peter Barlow embarked on an extensive
development and restoration programme,
executed with enthusiasm and total
dedication. After his death in 1975, his
wife Pamela took over the running of the
Rustenberg
estate, handing over the reins to her son,
Simon, in 1987.
History repeated itself when in 1996, Simon
Barlow initiated a development programme
– including a new state-of-the-art cellar.
Over the years, Rustenberg wines have
accumulated many accolades, both here
and abroad.
Winemaker, Randolph Christians, was
one of the recipients of the Patrick Grubb
Bursary which is jointly funded by the
Nederburg Auction. He spent the 2002
harvest at Château Mârgaux in Bordeaux.
Since 1999, Nico Walters has been
the viticulturist.
This year Simonsig Wine Estate celebrates
the 40th Anniversary of the pioneering
Cap Classique, Kaapse Vonkel.
Simonsig Estate is one of South Africa’s
most prominent wine dynasties, noted
worldwide for its devotion to quality
and innovation. Boasting a myriad of
significant “firsts”, Simonsig pioneered
the country’s first Methode Cap Classique,
Kaapse Vonkel, in 1971, and 2011 sees the
celebration of the 40th anniversary of
Frans Malan’s innovation.
Numerous prestigious awards garnered
include winning Wine Magazine’s Amorim
Cork Cap Classique Challenge twice, in
2002 and 2009. The admirable track record
of Simonsig Estate at the Veritas Awards
includes 29 Double Golds and 66 Gold
medals, more than any other producer in
South Africa.
The estate’s fine dining restaurant, Cuvee,
captivates with an eclectic mix of nostalgia
and Cape-inspired cuisine with genuine
Malan family hospitality, making it a must
visit on the Stellenbosch Wine Route.

Steenberg Vineyards carries the distinction
of being the oldest farm in the historic
and scenic Constantia Valley, having been
established in 1682.
Their vineyards cling to the slopes of
Steenberg (Stone Mountain), part of the
Table Mountain range, and within the
footprint of the Cape Floral Kingdom - a
world heritage site. Facing east, the vines
enjoy the cool morning sun, and coupled
with maritime influences like regular
coastal fog and cooling sea breezes, as
well as a moderate Mediterranean climate,
they have idyllic conditions to create wines
distinctive in character and complexity.
With 63 hectares under vines, 70% consists
of Sauvignon Blanc, Steenberg’s speciality,
and Semillon. Red cultivars include Merlot,
Shiraz and the Italian cultivar, Nebbiolo.
Their wines are made under the attentive
eyes of Cellarmaster and General Manager,
John Loubser - always pushing the
boundaries; never settling for mediocrity
- assisted by winemaker, JD Pretorius.

Stellenrust, founded 1692 by master
stone mason Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn,
was brought to the Cape by the Dutch
government to oversee the building of the
Castle of Good Hope.
The first wines were produced in 1928 and
since then more vineyards surrounding
Stellenbosch have been acquired to show
the diverse terroirs Stellenbosch can offer.
Currently, the farms stretch over more than

meets winemaking”. Our wines speak
of uniqueness and identity with every

and chemistry.
From the cooler Bottelary Hills to the awe

In 1983 Gyles Webb and his wife’s family
bought a run-down fruit farm situated about
6 kms outside Stellenbosch on the southern
slopes of the Simonsberg mountain. There
were no vines on the property at the time of
purchase so the slow process of turning the
property into a wine farm began, with the
removal of the old plum and pear orchards
and the clearing of virgin mountainside
land. It was very much a family affair from
the start, with Gyles looking after the
production, wife Barbara looking after the
trade (and the children), father-in-law Dave
looking after the general running of the
farm, and mother-in-law Edna handling
the cellar door.
Meticulous attention to detail in the
vineyards has paid off, as Thelema was, for
three years running, adjudged to have the
best vineyards in the Stellenbosch region
and remains a benchmark for viticultural
excellence in South Africa.
The Thelema team concentrate their efforts
on growing the healthiest fruit possible,
through both organic and sustainable
practices, in order to make fine wines that
exhibit both varietal and regional identity.

18th century double story, flat roofed,
Georgian style houses left in the country.
The farm was established in 1712 and is
600 hectares in size. With 140ha under
vines, it produces 55% percent red and 45%
white wine. The winemaker and viticultural
teams cleared the 600ha estate of alien
vegetation, rehabilitation tract to fynbos.
Supplementary overhead irrigation are
used most of the time.
Winemaker, Estelle Lourens says “You
know, sometimes when I drive up into the
vineyards they’re so beautiful. I forget that
I am actually working.”

Forget the flash, minimise the fuss and
remove the ego - this is the motivation
behind the winemaking of Vriesenhof.
The farm offers a tradition of winemaking
based on a solid partnership with nature,
an innate respect for the earth and an
ongoing quest for quality that begins in
its rich shale soil.
Boasting two distinguished wine
brands under its banner, Vriesenhof is
characterised by an authentic approach
to winemaking, all honed to perfection
by its master winemaker, Jan Boland
Coetzee. Best known as a rugby legend
with a killer scrumming tactic, Jan Boland
is also often dubbed the ‘Father of Pinot
Noir’ and his influence on Vriesenhof is
felt everywhere - from the handpicked
grapes to the personal care taken during
the vinification process.
Whether it’s the personal dedication and
vast experience of Jan Boland or the
unique conditions of the Paradyskloof
Valley, Vriesenhof undoubtedly provides
wines of a superior and natural quality.

Weltevrede Wine Estate will celebrate 100
years of family winemaking in the coming
year. Fourth generation family winemaker-
owner, Philip Jonker, and his team create
wines true to its ancient terroir.
Weltevrede is particularly known for its
individualistic Chardonnays and Méthode
Cap Classique, showing great depth,
harmony, classic elegance and minerality.
Weltevrede makes seven different
Chardonnays and four different styles of
Méthode Cap Classique. The diversity of
soils on Weltevrede Estate offer wines that
are intriguing, and especially the limestone
and shale offer white wines with layered
complexity, bright fruit flavours and great
aging potential.
Historic vintages, like these offered on
auction this year, are still kept in the
generations old candle lit underground
cellars of Weltevrede.

This Cabernet Franc is a 100% from clone
variety 623. The motive has been to show
the rich fruit aromatics of cassis and
raspberries, which over time has matured
into a rich full-bodied wine. Strong aromas
of flint and minerality with pepper and
leather are the backbone of this wine yet
the lingering fruit on the aftertaste is a
great reminder of its youthfulness.

This 1997 White Muscadel had a fairly
high incidence of botrytis and a good
concentrations of flavours. The grapes were
harvested at 24° Balling, crushed and left on
the skins for a period of 24 hours in order to
extract maximum character. This very special
1997 muscadel, named after the mother of
Lourens Jonker, is an elegant yet full-bodied,
highly aromatic dessert wine. Definitely a
food wine.

One of South Africa’s oldest wine brands,
Zonnebloem has been a leader in the time-
honoured craft of winemaking since the
early 18th century.
Today, this tradition lives on from the
vineyards, tended by the same families for
over three generations, to the meticulous
craftsmanship in the cellar. This has resulted
in a range of great red and white wines
nurtured, handcrafted and slowly coaxed
to perfection, until they are released at
optimum quality.
The history of Zonnebloem dates back to
the early 1700s, when wine was already
being produced on the Zonnebloem farm
at Simondium. During 1930, the focus
switched to white wines, but fortuitously
in 1940, the owner, John de Villiers, put
his expertise into making red wines again.
The range was certified in 1973, with
the introduction of the Wine of Origin
legislation, with grapes sourced from
select vineyards located throughout the
Stellenbosch region.
