Distributed Autonomous Communities or Community Token Economies are a fascinating concept enabled by Blockchain. They herald a future means of connecting people globally to solve pan-national problems of the global commons. Blockchain offers tools to collaborate on a worldwide scale, in a way never

previously possible. It is now possible to reach out across sectors and geographies and build substantial innovation communities to solve big and small problems. This enables not just cross-industry collaboration, but potentially pan-global collaboration.

In Community Token Economies, Jamie Burke predicts that digital communities will connect and form networks or cooperatives through token economies. Users can have direct access to token capital, investment and a real interest in the system. They can be rewarded or paid with tokens. The more the user uses or promotes the product, the stronger the product and underlying blockchain become. The user is no longer a passive consumer of a service; they are a stakeholder. In a Community Token Economy individuals rather than companies or sectors become the agents of innovation in a distributed model of collaboration. Community token economies enable and incentivise digital communities to connect and form networks around a major global problem. It is predictable that these communities will change over time from purely speculative communities to sustainable and purposeful global collaborations. One reason is that among many millennials in the blockchain community, there is a genuine desire to “change the world” and use technology and funding to create sustainable social change. Social impact is deeply embedded in their values and a driving force behind their actions. In a World Economic Forum study, 5,000 millennials surveyed in 18 different countries indicated that the overall top priority for any business should be “to improve society.”

A second is that there are global challenges that already unite people, and the response can be strengthened through establishing a Community Token Economy. One such example is the Decade Of Women (DOW), which has a bold vision to use Blockchain and frontier technologies to ensure concrete achievements for women across all Sustainable Development Goals. DOW aims to close the gap for women by mobilising capital and technology.

A key part of DOW is identifying the technologies that will solve the big problems. This will be done through a rolling hackathon series #HackQuantum. The #HackQuantum series will span across developing and developed countries and will be used to generate new solutions for the tokenized Quantum Impact (Qi) Women Bond and Qi Currency to deploy towards valuing women’s leadership in delivering the UN SDGs and an inclusive economy.

Last month Decade Of Women launched the global #HackQuantum series in Lagos, Nigeria. This started to make the vision real, linking the New York launch, with the aspirations and energy from the Blockchain community in Nigeria. This hackathon is the first in a series aimed to advance the implementation and financing of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 by elevating the financial independence of women worldwide, and engaging women and girls to lead the forefront of realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. At London Fintech Week the second of the #HackQuantam series on 6-8 July, teams will be challenged to come up with solutions that address the problems of women, oceans, and climate – true global challenges for small island states.

Community Token Economies are the “sleeping dragon” of the fourth industrial revolution, and we have one awakening with the Decade Of Women. We are all agents of impact, and for the first time, we have groundbreaking technology that will change the way we think, work and connect.
