Florence, Italy: cradle of the Renaissance

Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello, and the Accademia. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural genius. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the "newest" area of Florence, the Oltrarno.

The ancient Roman column known as the Column of Justice due to the sculpture of "Justice" on the top. The Column of Justice originates from the Baths of Caracalla, and was a gift to Cosimo I de' Medici by Pope Pius IV. In 1581 the Justice statue by Tadda was added to the top of the column.

Palazzo Strozzi faces the historical Via de' Tornabuoni.

The construction of the Palazzo Strozzi begun in 1489 by Benedetto da Maiano, for Filippo Strozzi the Elder, a rival of the Medici who had returned to the city in November 1466 and desired the most magnificent palace to assert his family's continued prominence and, perhaps more important, a political statement of his own status.

Page 18: Firenze passeggiando per la città10

The famous wrought-iron lanterns that decorate the corners of the palace exterior, are by an iron-worker named Caparra.

Page 19: Firenze passeggiando per la città10

Filippo Strozzi died in 1491, long before the construction's completion in 1538. Duke Cosimo I de' Medici confiscated it in the same year, not returning it to the Strozzi family until thirty years later.

Page 20: Firenze passeggiando per la città10

The palazzo remained the seat of the Strozzi family until 1937. Great changes were made to the building when the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni occupied Palazzo Strozzi

Page 21: Firenze passeggiando per la città10

The palazzo, granted by the

Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni to the Italian State in 1999, is now

home to the Institute of Humanist

Studies and to the Fondazione

Palazzo Strozzi.

The image of the Space Elephant was born in 1946 when Dalí painted the Temptation of Saint Anthony in which an elephant carries an obelisk across the Egyptian desert. This image represented the progress of technology in the modern world. This monumental artwork is situated in the Piazza della Stazione just in front of the Santa Maria Novella train station

Santa Maria Novella is a church situated just across from the main railway station which shares its name. Chronologically, it is the first great basilica in Florence, and is the city's principal Dominican church. This church was called Novella (New) because it was built on the site of the 9th-century oratory of Santa Maria delle Vigne
