From the Pastor:
A few weeks ago, I was
poking around in Isaiah and
stumbled into a few verses that
really caught my attention.
Some might say, “That’s no
stumbling at all! God had a
word for you!” That could be.
I’ll let you decide.
In Isaiah 30 God, through the prophet Isaiah, is speaking to Judah – the
southern kingdom of God’s people. It seems those pesky Assyrians (modern day Iraq)
were thinking about a southern conquest. Judah was next on the Assyrian hit list and
so the leaders of Judah decided to cut a deal with the Egyptians to protect them from
Assyria. All these plans were put in motion to keep Assyria in their place. The problem
was, the people forgot God in their planning. “Forgetting” might be generous. Really,
the people were just intentionally leaving God out of the equation. Do you ever find
yourself there? Have you ever cut a deal with what you know because it seems trusting
in the unknown is just too big?
About halfway through the Isaiah 30, God says the people are saying through
their actions, “Don’t tell us what we need to hear! Tell us what we want to hear!”
That’s a confrontational word, don’t you think? Do you ever find yourself there – avoid-
ing the truth and just looking for someone who will tell you what you want to hear?
We are constantly being pushed on in life. We may not be facing literal Assyrians
but each of us face threats. The threats may be economic, relational, health, or may be
simply someone wanting to change the way we like things. Each of our “Assyrians”
usually point to a loss of security. And often, we believe security is simply

As graduation nears, some of our students are mov-ing on to the next phase in their lives. To some, that means higher education.
Two long-time members of our church believed strongly in education and established scholarships to help our youth achieve their academic goals. The Ruby Palmerton and Charles A. Whisler Memorial
Scholarships for Academic Excellence have helped a number of our students over the past 25 years. These two scholarships are available again this year through an applica-tion process. While both of these scholarships give preference to those students embark-ing on their first year of college, students enrolled as sophomores, juniors, and seniors in college may also apply.
Application forms and the accompanying application requirement forms are available in the church office during regular business hours. Our Administrative Assistant, Angela Bilbrey, will also e-mail them to those who request an electronic delivery. A big “thank you” goes out to the Palmerton and Whisler families for keeping these scholarships as a vital piece in the education of our young people.

maintaining the status quo. Sometimes the status quo is OK but often, as Ronald
Reagan once said, “Status quo is Latin for the mess we’re in.”
Isaiah 30:15 says, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in
trust shall be your strength.” God has been working on me lately with this word:
“Gregg, I’m enough for you. You don’t have to over plan, tell people only what they
want to hear, and trust in what always has been.” I’m trying to pay attention to what
God wants to strip away so that I can clearly see that God is enough. I’m not there yet,
but I’m closer than I was yesterday. I hope there’s a word for you in all of this about
the Assyrians you’re facing, where you’re placing your trust, and what God might be
trying to strip away from your life.

Music Notes
Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
Psalm 100:2
When my morning alarm goes off, I turn on the radio to KSLT and usually an
awesome song is playing. I figure if I must wake up before my body is ready, that’s a
great way to get going!
Not only does waking up to a great song put a smile on my face early in the
morning, but I also find it creeping into my mind for the rest of the day. As I drive to
work I notice I hum it. As I go through my day, I become aware that I walk down the
hallway in time with its beats, and as I cook dinner in the evening, I find myself singing
it! All throughout the day this “wake up song” can be in my head. And then it hits
me. I, then, am constantly singing to God! A truly great song can be a the sound track
for my day. The music we listen to has a huge impact on our minds and really can set
up the tune of our day.
Psalm 100 says to come before God with joyful songs. Sometimes life is diffi-
cult, so our song is not always joyful, and yet, we are called to sing with God every sin-
gle day. Having a positive song in my head all day instilled in me how uplifting a tune
can be. That’s a great way to give God a joyful song even through difficult times or
mundane activities.
Please know that you don’t have to be a musician or poet to worship God. We
just need to come to Him with joy in our hearts and a willingness to praise Him for the
good God He is.
May I be reminded of God’s goodness each day and be willing to give Him the joyful
song of my life in everything I do.
What does the song in your heart sound like today?

Hurrah summer is here, it’s finally here! Everything has changed over to this season. The Flowers have bloomed and eve-rything is green. School is finally out and not a worry for a good long time. The weather
has changed to sun and fun! It’s time finally again to get the shorts out and tank tops on and soak in the vitamin D. Yes much has changed to the new season and it is good. Change is good it is how we grow and learn. If we never changed or went through change what would we experience? What stories would we have? Change can be hard it can be painful, but I personally feel that change is always like the seasons. You can sense it coming deep down and then it can happen all of a sudden! Life is thrown into a blizzard of change. It may not always be fun but God did not just create fall and winter, but Spring and Summer as well. The storm will stop and the beauty of change is revealed. Although we may not see it at first, but our hearts will if you open it to God as the flowers opens to the sun in spring. Romans 10:10 says, “For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” The blizzard will end but your heart can’t be warmed if you don’t let go of the winter. Could you imagine a flower refusing to bloom even though it’s that moment of opening that it has look forward to for so long. Change can be difficult it may be painful, but once it is over if we let go and open our hearts to God and we will see the glorious things he has done in us and around us.

The Safeway grocery store chain offers
a program to non-profit organizations
like churches where we (the church)
can receive 5% of our grocery and gas
purchases back in cash! The leader-
ship here at First Baptist wants to en-
courage you to take part in this pro-
gram with us. Here’s how the program
works:
1. Purchase a $10.00 Safeway grocery/gas card. They will be available from the church
office during the week in addition to members selling these cards before and after
worship. This $10.00 card has no administrative fee on it, so immediately, you have
$10.00 you can use for groceries or gas at Safeway. It functions like a gift card if
you’ve used one of those. Remember, this card would need to be purchased
through the church for us to receive the benefits. So if you want to be a part of this
program, you can get one or more of these $10.00 cards from us at the church.
2. The next time you’re at Safeway, you can re-load this card. You can put up to
$500.00 on this card at one time, but remember, you’d need to put the money on
your card before you check out for us to get the benefit. Plan on loading your card
about once a month with your family’s estimated Safeway spending.
3. Pay for your groceries or gas with this re-loadable card. There is no cost for you in
using this card. If you use the Safeway Club Card, you will still get all the discounts
you’re used to.
4. If everyone who participates in this program at First Baptist collectively totals
$5,000.00 or above in a month, we’ll get a check for 5% of that amount. That’s at
least $250.00 per month.
As of January 2015, we have raised $7,175.44 through this program.

Library News for June:
As we enter the summer months and, hopefully, have a more relaxed schedule
and possibly some vacation days planned, it would be a good time to read a
book. We have lots of newly donated books, as well as a lot of other good
books in various categories. I encourage you to make a visit to the Church Li-
brary, located on the lower level of the church past the Sunday School rooms,
and check one or two out for enjoyable reading.
The books on the bookshelf upstairs is another place to look at the books on
display there. Just complete the card in the front of the book with the date
and your name, place it in the container on the lower shelf, and you can borrow
the book for 30 days.

State ABW Conference
June 12-14 at Camp Judson
Special Speakers will be:
Chris Marziale, National Partnership Coordinator for Women Min-istries-White Cross Projects, will speak about White Cross, share personal stories from missionaries/partners and explain how White Cross 2015. Chris will also talk about the Women and Girls' Mission Fund that we contribute to each month in our Circle meetings and how those funds are being used.
Rev Glenny Klumper and her husband from the Philips Home in Sioux Falls provide a drug and alcohol free home for at-risk women, in which women can discover God's good purpose for their lives. She spoke at the biennial and was a great speaker. I believe she will have a powerful message to listen to during the weekend.
There are workshops on Saturday, great fellowship with other Baptist women from throughout the state, and, of course, that delicious food and atmosphere at Camp Judson.
Registration forms are on the back table. There are costs for full- time , as well as part-time, attendees, or costs if you want to come for Saturday only. There are also scholarship funds available for anyone who would like to attend but needs financial assistance. The registration deadline is May 31.
Barb Millar is the Conference Chair and the women of First Baptist Church are honored to be hosts of this conference. You are encouraged to attend. This is always an uplifting weekend with other Baptist women. If you have never attended, please prayerfully consider joining us for the weekend.
