INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY ● Isaiah 58:7-10 * 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 * Matthew 5:13-16

We are the salt of the earth. Light is an important image in our readings today. True disciples of Jesus witness to others and help

illuminate their way to God. As salt of the earth, our deeds must always lead others to Christ, or else we are like flavorless salt. In the first reading from Isaiah, the Lord says to care for others, and then your light shall break forth like the dawn. Saint Paul writes to the Corinthians of Christ crucified. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples they are salt of the earth and the light of the world.

FIRST COMMUNION - CELEBRATION OF ILLUMINATION

We welcome all the children preparing to receive First Holy Communion in 2020 to the Celebrations

of Illumination in Rocky Mountain House (09.00 AM) and Caroline (01.00 PM) ● Feb. 09, 2020

No one would deny there is too much darkness in the world. We also know how much we dread the dark

days of winter and can’t wait for the days to start getting longer again. Illness and depression are often

linked to the lack of light. ● As faithful followers of Jesus, it is now our responsibility to disperse the

darkness we encounter around us with the Light of Christ that dwells within each of us. As congregations

and communities, we have to hold our civic leaders accountable for decisions that bring darkness to the

world instead of light. We also need to praise our civic leaders when they buck what may be popular and

choose to do what is right. ● The prophet Isaiah says, Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the

oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.

These are all concrete ways in which we flavor the earth with God’s goodness, and allow light to break forth

in darkness. But these are not the only ways. ● Jesus’ metaphors do not have to frighten the introverts

among us – we are not required to be a giant pillar of salt, or a strobe light on an airfield. Each of us has

the opportunity to glorify God according to our gifts, our circumstances and our state in life. So even if all

we can offer is a grain of salt, or a flicker of a match light, that is OK. Whatever we have been given by God

is meant to be shared for the sake of the world. Whatever we have is worth giving. ● May the Lord grant,

as Saint Paul says, that our faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God, that we may be

salt for the earth and light for the world.

NEW BOOK ● NEW BOOK ● NEW BOOK

FR. CLAIR WATRIN

WITH ALICE MURRAY

“REJOICE ALWAYS:

52 LESSONS ON JOY”

Reflections and stories that will inspire, challenge, and entertain while confirming you are completely loved by God that created you! Is there more than one way to eat an orange? Can a flat tire be a blessing? In your deepest pain, is there hope? Father Clair Watrin was born in northern Alberta at the beginning of the Great Depression. Through his life he has suffered trials and failures, but has experienced an amazing truth…God is definitely with us! He is with us everyday in the present moment, in the smallest things and in his beautiful creation. And where God is, there is joy. In Rejoice Always Father Clair shares personal stories and observations that are life-changing lessons for us all. The 52 meditations in Rejoice Always can be consumed slowly and savored like good chocolate; one week at a time, or gobbled in a binge (like good chocolate!). You might in fact do both. However you consume them, be ready for more joy in the everyday moments you live. To order on Amazon, please go to: amazon.ca/dp/165683488X . Cost - $20.00 + GST

We have certain amount of this book in our parish office.

You can buy this book by contacting our parish office. ● Tel/Text: 403-845-3457 ● Email: [email protected]

REVEW OF THE BOOK. I woke up early and crossed the room to pick this one up, even though on my bedside table I have a stack of ongoing reading. It is a beautiful, inspirational book you could read all at once or like the title indicates read one lesson a week for 52 weeks and let it "percolate" through you. I couldn't put it down and found it very inspirational, humbly written and I could really relate to some of his stories. I had attended the Red Deer Live in in 2018 and was really changed by the experience. After attending I painted a picture for my bedroom wall with "Pray without Ceasing" 1 Thessalonians 5:17; I was so inspired and moved by the experience. I have never met Fr. Clair and only know Alice as a member of our Parish, I really encourage everyone to purchase and read this book. You don't need to be a "Live-in'er" to find meaning and inspiration in this book. All else it is an easy and enjoyable read on nice paper, supporting one of our fellow parishioners and a retired Catholic Priest. Just maybe, perhaps it might inspire you or others to Open the other Book we should all have on our bedside tables to look up the passages referred to in the lessons and be inspired too. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER - ECUMENICAL

Sunday, March 08, 2020 ● 04.00 PM

St. Matthew Church - Rocky Mountain House (5208 53 Ave.)

Tea – Coffee – Cornbread and Fellowship to follow

The WDP 2020 program is based on Jesus’ encounter with a person who, although positioned for healing, had not acted upon the opportunities given. Jesus asked –“Do you want to be made well?” You are faced with this life-changing question. What are you going to do? “Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk,” said Jesus. Our sisters from Zimbabwe are taking Jesus’ encounter to be a call to act in love for peace and reconciliation. “The action verbs suggest that we should not be afraid to act on the word of God. God is offering us the steps for personal and social transformation.”

As the Canadian government prepares to expand access to euthanasia, the Catholic Bishops of Alberta have written a Pastoral Letter to the faithful on this subject. In Remaining True to Christ Now and at the Hour of our Death, they offer a thoughtful reflection on Catholic teaching regarding respect for life and our responsibility to remain faithful to God's will. The letter calls on Catholics to contact their MPs to oppose any expansion of the current law and advocate instead for more access to palliative care.

LIVE-IN RETREAT AND GET TO KNOW JESUS

RED DEER

FEB. 21 - 23, 2020

The Live-In is a retreat weekend very different from the traditional type that emphasizes silence and private prayer. The whole purpose

of the Live-In is to lead those who come to discover a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Most people who attend a Live-

In seem to experience a new peace and deeper faith. Many claim that after their Live-In, they received a whole new outlook on

Christian Faith and their life. They found a new meaning to their life and a fresh desire to pray and read scripture. The program involves

a series of presentations and slides on the basis of Christian life. There are a variety of speakers from many walks of life. The entire

program is uplifting, informative and very enjoyable. It has a great variety of activities! PLEASE NOTE: Live-In is Catholic founded and

based retreat (it includes the celebration of Reconciliation if available, and Mass) which welcomes members of all denominations.

THEY ARE AT IT AGAIN:

SCAM EMAILS TO PARISHIONERS

The Archdiocese received two reports this week about email scammers targeting our

parishioners once again. These emails look like they come from a pastor, because the

scammers have created fake Gmail accounts in the pastor's name. Typically, they ask the

recipient to purchase gift cards for someone in need. Please be assured that our priests

NEVER email their parishioners to ask for money or gift cards out of the blue. If

you receive such an email, we encourage you to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud

Centre (online or at 1-888-495-8501).
