Introduction

The First Nations Forestry Program is a national program designed to increaseFirst Nations’ capacity in forest resource management and related businesssectors. The program is jointly funded and administered by Indian andNorthern Affairs Canada and Natural Resources Canada - Canadian ForestService. Within British Columbia (B.C.). it is managed by a committeeconsisting of twelve members representing First Nations, the Canadian ForestService, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and the B.C. Ministry of Forests.The committee is comprised of nine First Nations representatives fromcommunities, businesses and academia, and one representative from each ofthe government agencies.

The First Nations Forestry Program has provided funding and forestry advice tomany of B.C.’s status First Nations in order that they may assume a greaterrole in forestry activities within their traditional territories. Assistance wasprovided to foster business development both on and off reserves, throughopportunity identification, training, partnership negotiations and entrepreneurialmentoring.

In 1999, the First Nations Forestry Program Management Board requested thatan attempt be made to develop a listing of the current First Nation-owned forestsector companies and enterprises in B.C. This was to be an effort to provideas complete a “Who’s Who” of First Nations forest sector firms as possible.

Survey forms were developed and sent to all First Nations and Tribal Councilsin B.C. in September and November, 1999. In June, 2000, the same surveyform was forwarded to all B.C. Ministry of Forests Regional and District Officesto allow their Aboriginal Liaison Advisors to provide details of any additionalcompanies in their areas that they were aware of. Concurrently, reviews wereundertaken of several directories available from various public and privateagencies that listed First Nations companies to gain additional entries. Finally,individuals within various B.C. First Nation communities were contacted toverify existing data and provide additional entries.

All of the information gathered was input to a customized Microsoft Accessdatabase developed by one of the authors. The database was used togenerate several reports which make up the text of this directory.

Not all of the First Nations forest companies in British Columbia are included inthis document. Some companies and communities elected not to respond toour requests to participate, while others, despite the wide ranging effortsoutlined above, may have been missed. It is hoped that companies notincluded in this edition find it worthwhile to participate in future editions.

How To Use This Directory

Alphabetical Company Listing

This section of the directory contains an alphabetical listing of all of thecompanies contained in the database. They are printed in a “label” format thatgives a contact name, the company name, and the company addressinformation.

Listing by First Nation Affiliation

The listings found here show the details for each company, arrangedalphabetically by the Tribal Council or First Nation that the company is affiliatedwith. Company contact information (address, telephone, fax, contact person)and type of business (sole proprietorship, partnership, joint venture, bandowned, owned by member) are included as is a list of the type of business(es)the company reported that it was involved in. The listing starts with a fewcompanies that do not show either a First Nation or a Tribal Council affiliation(listed alphabetically by company name), followed by those that only have aTribal Council affiliation shown (alphabetically by Tribal Council, by companyname). These are then followed by the majority of the companies listedalphabetically by band affiliation and then by company name within each band.

Business Activity Listing

The Business Activity section lists the details for each company based on astandardized set of business activities (silviculture contracting, logging, forestryconsulting, sawmilling, general forestry, and a few more specific specializedcategories), arranged alphabetically by activity. Companies may be listedunder each business activity they are involved in if they have reported activity inmore than one category.

This section is based on a listing of the companies arranged alphabetically bythe city or town that they are located in (from their mailing address). All of theadditional company information is contained in this section as well as theprevious two sections.
