In Jesus, we find the strength to survive all that is to hap- pen in our lives. · For the Holy Church of God, that it remain attentive and awake to the rights and needs of all people; · For those who work for peace and justice, that their vigilance will be strengthened though the world seems to sleep; · For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind; · For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that God will deliver them from oppression; · For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming. By placing emphasis on the memo- rial acclamation and the Lord's Prayer we bring to mind the eschatological element in the lit- urgy. First Sunday of Advent: Cycle A

FIRST READING: Is. 11:1-10"He judges the poor with justice."A shoot will spring from the stockof Jesse, and on him will rest thefavor of God.RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 72"In his days justice shall flourishand peace till the moon fails."SECOND READING:Rom. 15: 4-9 "Christ is the hope ofall people."GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Lk. 3: 4, 6 "Prepare the way of theLord, make straight his paths: allmankind shall see the salvation ofGod."GOSPEL: Mt. 3: 1-12 "Repent, forthe kingdom of heaven is close athand." John the Baptist preaches thata voice cries out in the wilderness toprepare a way for the Lord. When hesaw Pharisees and Sadducees comingfor baptism he rebuked them for theirhypocrisy. He proclaimed that while hebaptizes with water someone is comingwho will baptize with fire.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Repen-tance; salvation of God; kingdomof heaven; justice and peace.

FOCUS: All shall see the salvationof God. The Lord will come withjustice an equity for the poor.

REFLECTION: “As no darknesscan be seen by anyone surroundedby light, so no trivialities can cap-ture the attention of anyone whohas his eyes on Christ. The manwho keeps his eyes upon the headand origin of the whole universehas them on virtue in all its perfec-tion; he has them on truth, on jus-tice, on immortality and on every-thing else that is good, for Christ isgoodness itself.“

St. Gregory of Nyssa

“The kingdom of heaven is withinyou. Insofar as the Son of Goddwells in you, the kingdom ofheaven lies within you also. Herewithin are the riches of heaven, ifyou desire them. Here, O sinner, isthe kingdom of God within you.Enter into yourself, seek more ea-gerly and you will find it without

great travail. Outside you is death, and the door to death is sin. Enterwithin yourself and remain in yourheart, for there is God.“

St. Ephraim of Syria

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by proclaiming that a voicecries out in the wilderness of ourlives, calling us to hearken to God'sword. This is a time of hearing andunderstanding, of seeking and find-ing, of sensing and responding toGod's presence in our lives. Theprayers of the faithful could focus onour need to level the mountains ofpride and fill in the valleys fromwhich injustice springs forth.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Penitential rite: Third form with sec-ond set of sample invocations.Opening Prayer: See AlternateSample General Intercessions-My sisters and brothers, we arecalled to make straight the path toGod. Let us ask the Lord to guide usin the path of life.· For our world leaders, that Jesus theChrist enrich them with spiritualgifts;· For all peoples of the world, that thehunger for peace and mercy motivateall towards action;· For those who suffer from hunger oroppression, that Jesus gather and leadthem to the Father;· For the aged and infirm who hunger forconsolation, that they receive the joy-ful message that our God is hereamong us;· For our families and community, thatby filling in the valleys of our love,God's grace can flow more easily to us.Memorial Acclamation: 2 or 3The Lord's Prayer: 4th introductionPrayers over the people: First orSolemn Blessing in Advent

R.C.I.A.John the Baptist urged people to re-pent of their sins, to prepare for theLord, to level mountains and fill invalleys.· What does it mean to fill in thevalleys and level every mountain?

· In what ways have the actions andwords of Jesus, the one who bap-tizes with fire, inspired you to adeeper relationship with God?· What are the mountains and val-leys in your life that need to bealtered?· What paths need to be madestraight in your life?Reflect on the need to level themountains of pride, arrogance andnarrow-mindedness that are withinus all.

Children's Liturgy of the WordThe readings today speak of mak-ing straight the crooked path andpreparing a way for the Lord.Focus the celebration on our need toprepare our hearts for Jesus.· What can we do to prepare for theLord?God wants us to pay special atten-tion to each other and to seek fair-ness and peace.· Who helps bring fairness into theworld? (see first reading)We need to help to make the worlda better place to live in. We need tobe fair and kind showing othershow to be the same, for this is howwe prepare the way for Jesus._____________________________________________________________________________

REFLECTION: “He who wrote onthe tablets of stone without ironmade Mary with child of the HolyGhost; and He who producedbread in the desert withoutploughing, impregnated the Vir-gin without corruption; and Hewho made the rod to bud withoutrain made the daughter of Davidwithout seed.” St. Augustine

“Mary, give me your Heart: so beau-tiful, so pure, so immaculate; yourHeart so full of love and humilitythat I may be able to receive Jesus inthe Bread of Life and love Him asyou love Him and serve Him in thedistressing guise of the poor.”

Mother Teresa

“Do not be lazy about descending. In the heart is life, and you mustlive there. Do not think that this issomething to be attempted only bythe perfect. No, it is for everyonewho has begun to seek the Lord.”

Theophane the Recluse

“Miracles happen, not in oppositionto nature, but in opposition to whatwe know of nature.” St. Augustine

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The word of Godhas special significance in today’sreadings. Mary, bearer of the “Liv-ing Word,” responds to the word ofGod spoken through the angelGabriel. A bold displaying and in-censing of the Holy Books at thegathering rite would be one way todemonstrate reverence for the wordof God. Litanies and mantras toMary as well as appropriate periodsof silence will help to inspire. Intro-duce the profession of faith by citingMary as an example of the power offaith in one’s life.

R.C.I.A. Mary is a role model for Christiansbecause of her faith and acceptanceof God’s will for her. We go throughtimes of confusion and doubt. Attimes we may feel we are plunginginto the unknown and even intodarkness itself. This is why Mary isso important to us. Through faithshe was able to attain extraordinarystature. This is the case with many ofthe church’s saints. They were ordi-nary people called by God to liveextraordinary lives. Say the Hail Mary frequently. You’ll find it helps. A favorite prayerof Catholics for centuries, it is a giftfrom Christ Himself, through thegospels.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word What do you suppose it was likebeing the child of the woman whowas most blessed among women? She must have been a gentle, lovingmother. What must it have been likefor her, being the mother of such anawesome child? Jesus had a large family. His grand-parents were St. Anne and St.Joaquin. He had an uncle and aunt,St. Zachary and St. Elizabeth, and acousin, St. John the Baptist. Andmany others are mentioned in theNew Testament, and in other his-torical books. They lived 2,000 years

ago in what is now Israel. Then itwas a Roman colony. Do a littleresearch and talk about life in thedays of Christ’s childhood._____________________________________________________________________________

The eyes of the blind will beopened and the ears of the deafshall be cleared for your god iscoming.RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 146: 6-10 "Come, Lord, and saveus."SECOND READING: Jas. 5: 7-10"You also must be patient; do notloose heart, the Lord's coming willbe soon."GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Is. 61: 1 (Lk. 4: 18) "The Spirit of theLord is upon me; he sent me to bringGood News to the poor."GOSPEL: Mt. 11: 2-11"Are you the one who is to come, ormust we wait for someone else?"John, in prison, sent his disciples to askif Jesus was the one who was to come.Jesus tells them to go back and reportwhat they have seen and heard, that theblind see, and the lame walk.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: TheSpirit of God; Good News; Salva-tion; Patience.

FOCUS: God, who has enteredtime, has come to save us and bringhope.

REFLECTION: "So, brethren, 're-joice in the Lord,' not in the world. That is, rejoice in the truth, not inthe wickedness; rejoice in the hopeof eternity, not in the fading flowerof vanity. That is the way to rejoice.Wherever you are on earth, how-ever long you remain on earth, 'theLord is near, do not be anxiousabout anything."

St. Anthony of Egypt

“For a stalk to grow or a flower toopen there must be time that can-not be forced; nine months must goby for the birth of a human child; towrite a book or compose music of-ten years must be dedicated to pa-tient research. To find the mysterythere must be patience, interiorpurification, silence, waiting….”

Pope John Paul II

“It would appear that you havelearnt from experience the truth thatone must 'Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in him with trembling'(Ps. ii. II). You must keep both thesetwo things and hold them togetherinseparably, in order not to allow joyto lead to negligence, nor fear toquench your joy.”

Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by suggesting that in today'sgospel reading the question "Areyou the one to come?" could beasked by us: Do we recognize Jesusas the one who will lead us or do westill wait for another? Introduce thebreaking of the bread by stating thatJesus through the power of the Eu-charist gives us new sight and sensi-tivity.SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Penitential rite: Third form with thirdset of sample invocationsSample General Intercessions:Introduction: My brothers and sis-ters, we are called to bring GoodNews to the poor. Let us turn to Godwhose Spirit strengthens us in fire.· For the Holy Church of God and for herleaders, that through the Holy Spirit, the church may be led towards a re-newal of action and practice;· For all people in all cultures, that theLord bless the world with peace andprotect with love;· For all those deprived of freedom andall who are oppressed because of whatthey believe, that the message ofChrist, the Good News of God's love, touch their lives;· For our families and local community, that through the Holy Spirit we maybring the Good News of God's pres-ence to those around us;The Lord's Prayer: See fourth sampleinvitationSolemn Blessing in Advent

R.C.I.A.John's question in today's gospelcould be seen as our own: "Are youthe one who is to come or shall wewait for another?" If we seek quick

answers and immediate gratifica-tion we had better look elsewhere. In the words of St. Therese ofLiseaux, "If you want something ofquality, you must be willing to paya high price." To be a Christian doesnot mean your questions will beanswered. It is questions ratherthan answers that open the mindand heart. By accepting Jesus wemust prepare for unsettling conse-quences that challenge us to growand open to God.

Children's Liturgy of the WordWhat were the questions asked intoday's gospel? What was Jesus' re-sponse? Ask the children what itmeans to say that actions speaklouder than words. Lead the chil-dren to understand how actions aremore persuasive than words. Havethe children come up with theirown examples. Now discuss the re-sponse Jesus gave in the gospelreading today._____________________________________________________________________________

FIRST READING: Is. 7: 10-14"The maiden will conceive andgive birth to a son whom she willcall Immanuel."RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 24: 1-6 "Let the Lord enter! He isthe king of glory."SECOND READING: Rom. 1: 1-7"Jesus Christ, a descendent ofDavid, is the Son of God."GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Mt. 1: 23 "A virgin will give birth toa son; his name will be Immanuel:God is with us"GOSPEL: Mt. 1: 18-24"Jesus was born of Mary, who wasbetrothed to Joseph, a descendentof David."

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Lineageof Jesus; Emmanuel, God is withUs; the King of Glory; Virgin Birth

FOCUS: God, with human assis-tance, became one of us, fulfillingthe prophecies of old.

REFLECTION: “Moses built thehouse, yet did not complete it andwent away. Then god raised up thechoir of prophet by his spirit, andthey built on the foundation ofMoses, but could not complete itand also went away. All of them, through the spirit, say that thewound was insurable, and thatnone of the creatures was able toheal it, except the Only Begotten, the very Mind of the Father, andHis very Image.”

St. Anthony of Egypt

“So you have begun to realize whatreal peace means. Glory be to God!Then what is the matter? Now youmust advance into the realm wherethis peace is to be found. Seek Para-dise lost, in order to sing the praiseof Paradise regained. That is allthat matters. Everything outsideand apart from this peace is empti-ness. And this peace is not far, it isalmost within your grasp, al-though you must desire it, and todesire is not so easy. May theMother of God and your GuardianAngel help you!"

Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by stating that God and hu-mans have collaborated to bringabout the birth of Jesus. This is thenew creation that bridges that dis-tance between God and humankind.Introduce the profession of faith andthe general intercessions with theidea that with faith like that of Maryand Joseph, anything is possible. Anappropriate response to the generalintercession today is "Let the Lordenter!"

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYER SELECTIONS:Opening Prayer: AlternateSample General Intercessions: In-troduction-My brothers and sisters, rejoice, for nothing is impossiblewith God. Let us offer our prayersand hopes to God who has donegreat things among people.· For people everywhere, that the HolySpirit guide those who trust and hope;· For those who work with the poor andsuffering, that they be strengthenedin their efforts;· For those suffering from loneliness, ofsickness and those who are dying, thatthey recognize God's saving presencein their lives;· For our community and our familieswho welcome Christ into their lives, that they may learn to receive God inthe poor and suffering in our midst;Preface: Second for AdventMemorial Acclamation: 2nd or 3rdLord's Prayer: 4th sample invitationPrayers over the people: Third orSolemn Blessing in Advent

R.C.I.A.Today's readings deal with the mys-tery of the incarnation: the collabo-ration between humankind andGod. To collaborate with God is toenter into uncharted lands. To ac-cept Jesus as messiah is to welcomethe unexpected and the sometimesdisconcerting. In the first readingAhaz refrains from asking God for asign. He is ready to make earthlyalliances to further his kingdom. Hegrew impatient with this seeminglyaloof God. God gave him a sign

nonetheless, that the maiden is withchild, whom she ill call Immanuel.· What are your expectations ofGod?· Do you see yourself as a collabora-tor with God or a receiver of God'sgrace?

Children's Liturgy of the WordIt must have been difficult for Jo-seph to accept what was happeningto Mary in the events leading up toJesus' birth. Today's gospel readingsuggests that God needed Joseph'shelp as well as Mary's assistance.God works through and withpeople rather than for them. It is noteasy to follow the way that Godleads us. We have only faith to fallback on when we are not sure. Jo-seph and Mary are examples ofwhat can happen when we believethat God will help us._____________________________________________________________________________

REFLECTION: “..let there be good-will without measure between allbeings. Let good will without mea-sure prevail in the whole world, above, below, around, unstinted, un-mixed with any feeling of differing oropposing interests. If a man remainsteadfastly in this state of mind all thetime, then is come to pass the saying,“Even in this world holiness has beenfound.” Metta Sutta

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: This is a night ofmystical paradox. To create an ap-propriate atmosphere, search for abalance of dynamic, joyful expres-sion and contemplative silence. Con-sider moving directly from the carol-ing service to the Gloria as the intro-ductory rite. This means omitting thepenitential rite. (See General Instruc-tion of the Liturgy of the Hours, nos. 94-96.) The use of incense, candles andHoly Book in procession, togetherwith a dramatic proclamation of theComing of the Word, will help toexpress the depth of this night ofwonder.Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of sample invocations.Preface: See second Christmas prefaceEucharistic Prayer: Roman Canonwith proper commemorations for the

Christmas season.Solemn Blessing- Christmas season.

FOCUS: “Today a great light hascome upon the earth.”

REFLECTION:“She brought forthher Son, from Whom such ineffablelight and splendour radiated that thesun could not be compared to it....And then I heard the wonderfulsinging of angels.” Bridget of Sweden

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Songs, litanies andinvitations to prayer should focus onthe living Word of God. A processionwith and incensing of the Holy Bookswould demonstrate our devotion tothe Word and its significance in ourlives. The use of handbells during theGloria and memorial acclamationecho the sound of a universe rejoic-ing.

FIRST READING:Sir. 3: 2-6, 12-14 “Those who fearthe Lord honor their parents.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 128 “O Blessed are those whofear the Lord and walk in hisways.”SECOND READING:1 John 3: 1-2, 21-24 “We are calledchildren of God, and so we are."GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Col. 3: 15, 16 “May the peace ofChrist rule in your hearts; and thefullness of his message live withinyou.”GOSPEL:Mt. 2, 13-15, 19-23 “Take the childand his mother, and flee to Egypt.”

FOCUS: “O Blessed are those whofear the Lord and walk in hisways..”

REFLECTION: “You say that youhave no humility or love. So long asthese are absent, everything spiri-tual is absent. What is spiritual isborn when they are born andgrows as they grow... Humility isacquired by acts of humility, loveby acts of love.”

Theophane the Recluse

“My brothers, Christ made love thestairway that would enable allChristians to climb to heaven. Holdfast to it, therefore, in all sincerity, give one another practical proof ofit, and by your progress in it, makeyour ascent together.”

Fulgentius of Ruspe

“The history of mankind, the his-tory of salvation, passes by way ofthe family. The family is placed atthe center of the great struggle be-tween good and evil, between lifeand death, between love and allthat is opposed to love.”

Pope John Paul II

“People are influenced in their ac-tions by undercurrents of self-seek-ing. ... All seems to go well withthem as long as everything turnsout in accordance with theirwishes, their plans; but when their

wills are thwarted, they lose theirbalance and get angry ... Let aware-ness of our own self-seeking lead usto live a humble life following theteachings of Christ.”

St. Thomas à Kempis

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Families can play asignificant role in the celebration oftoday’s liturgy as lectors, servers, ushers, bearers of the gifts, and mu-sicians Keep in mind a broad senseof what constitutes a family. Manyfamilies consist of a single parentwith one child, or one homeless per-son, or even two friends. An introduction to the sprinklingrite: All those who are baptized inChrist are part of the Christian fam-ily. An introduction to the Lord’sPrayer could mention kindness anddedication as building blocks in thestructure of family life.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of sample invocations.Preface: See Christmas PrefacesEucharistic Prayer: Roman Canonwith the proper commemorations forChristmas.Prayers Over the People: Second, sixth or seventhSolemn Blessing for Christmas

R.C.I.A.How can we strengthen familyties? Are you willing to change tomeet family needs? Do you demandthat others in your family change tosuit you? Must we all change toaccomodate each other? Can youmake another person change? There is really only one person youcan change and that is yourself. Youcan’t change what others do, you canonly change the way you react towhat they do. Discuss the elements involved instrengthening family ties.• What are the qualities of a strong

family?• What can we learn from the family

of Mary, Joseph and Jesus?

• In what ways do you see thechurch as an extended family?

Reflect on a concept of family thatgoes beyond the nuclear family. The words of Jesus encourage us toseek the Lord in all types of peopleand to recognize others as membersof God's family.____________________________________________________________________________

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Son ofGod; Baptism; New Live: God iswith Us; the King of Glory;

FOCUS: "This is my beloved Son; onhim my favor rests." Jesus is inaugu-rated into his earthly ministry.

REFLECTION: “Through Christwe see as in a mirror the spotlessand excellent face of God.”

St. Clement of Rome

“The great method of prayer is tohave none. If in going to prayer onecan form in oneself a pure capacityfor receiving the spirit of God, thatwill suffice for all method.” St. Jane Frances de Chantal

“True Christian life is the life ofgrace. A man makes some reli-gious resolution: but in order to beable to act according to it, it is nec-essary that grace be united with hisspirit. When this union is present, moral strength, hitherto evidentonly temporarily in his first enthu-siasm, is impressed on his spiritand remains there always. This re-establishment of the moralstrength of the spirit is effected by

Children's Liturgy of the WordRecount, with the children's help, the various activities and prepara-tions that made this Christmasmemorable. Perhaps some of thememories are negative ones. That'sall right, life is made up of positiveand negative memories. Ask thechildren to think about what theycan learn from their experiences ofthis season. What can they do toremember the joys as well as thedisappointments that make up thisseason?____________________________________________________________________________

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The placement ofthis celebration at the end of theChristmas season should be noted. This is another manifestation of theincarnation. God made flesh is re-vealed to the world through bap-tism into his mission on earth. To-day's gospel reading can be inter-preted to signify our own need to goforth into the world with the GoodNews of God's salvation throughJesus Christ. This can be an appro-priate time to call for lay ministersand to reflect how individuals canbring the light of Christ to others.Current lay ministers could contrib-ute some piece in the bulletin or aspart of the homily on the functionand value of their ministry.Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of invocations.Prayers over the people: NinthSolemn Blessing for ChristmasorSolemn Blessing for Epiphany

R.C.I.A.In the Eastern Church there is a prac-tice known as the "Poustinia" whichis Russian for desert. It involves thepractice of going into seclusion topray. The object is to leave the dis-tractions of the world temporarilyso that peace and the awareness ofGod may be internalized and giveone strength to live in the world. To interiorize solitude is to be able todraw from that well of strength evenin the clamor of daily life.• How can we keep some of the wonder associated with Christ- mas alive throughout the entire year?• What are some of the memories of

this season you would like to holdand draw strength from at othertimes?
