FIRST READING : 2 Sam 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 I have been with you wherever you went, and I have de- stroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 80 “God of hosts, bring us back; let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.” SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 1: 3-9 “The revelation we looked for, Christ Jesus our Lord.” GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Ps. 85: 8 “Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva- tion.” GOSPEL: Mk. 13: 33-37 “Stay awake! You never know when the Lord will come.” SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: atten- tiveness; kindness of God; salva- tion; nearness of the Kingdom; light of God. FOCUS: “Stay awake for you know not when the master of the house returns.” Death can come suddenly and unexpectedly. Be ready to be in the presence of God. REFLECTION: “Don’t imagine that if you had a great deal of time you would spend more of it in prayer. Get rid of that idea! Again and again God gives more in a moment than in a long period of time, for his actions are not mea- sured by time at all.” St. Theresa of Avila “Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe; to know what he ought to desire; and to know what he ought to do.” St. Thomas Aquinas APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The mood of the liturgy in Advent is one of anticipa- tion and preparation. We prepare for the anniversary of Our Savior’s birth, we prepare for the Second Coming, and we prepare to see God. Sprinkling rite or Penitential rite: Third form with sec- ond set of sample invocations Sample General Intercessions: My brothers and sisters, as we prepare for the coming of Christ let us thank God for his mercy. In Jesus, the face of God has illuminated us and we have been saved from death: • For the Holy Church of God, may we remain attentive and awake to the needs of all people; • For those who work for peace and mercy, may our vigilance be strength- ened; • For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind; • For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that our mercy will deliver them from oppression; • For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming; • For each of us here, may we all be ready for God with a clean soul and a heart full of love. By placing emphasis on the memo- rial acclamation and the Lord’s Prayer we bring to mind the eschato- logical element in the liturgy. Memorial acclamation: 2nd or 3rd The Lord’s Prayer: See fourth sample invitation to prayer Prayers over the people: First or sixteenth or Solemn Blessing in Advent R.C.I.A. To live in the constant light of the gospel, is to be ready to see God. On the day of judgement our money, our intelligence, our social standing will be of no importance, only how we have loved. Belief in the Second Coming re- veals our deep yearnings and aspi- rations for love and fulfillment, for all to be complete. The Second Com- ing will be a time when God will be revealed to us completely, and henceforth, we will be with Him for- ever and ever. Children's Liturgy of the Word · What is it like to wait for something really special, something that you can't wait to receive? Waiting is a difficult pastime. Christmas is something we wait for during Advent. We also wait for Jesus in a different way. We await his return into our lives, into our hearts and into our minds. FIRST READING: Is. 40: 1-5, 9-11“Make straight in the desert theway of the Lord.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 85 “Let us see O Lord, yourmercy and give us your savinghelp.”SECOND READING:2 Pet. 3: 8-14 “We wait for newheavens and a new earth.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Lk. 3: 4, 6 “Prepare the way of theLord, make straight his paths: allmankind shall see the salvation ofGod.”GOSPEL: Mk. 1: 1-8“Prepare a way for the Lord.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Repen-tance; salvation of God; kingdomof heaven; justice and peace.

FOCUS: “Make ready the way ofthe Lord.” The herald cries for us toreform our lives and respond to theword of God.

REFLECTION: The message wepreach is not the wisdom of thisworld but the words of life thatseem like foolishness to theunspiritual man...

“If it is true that sin in a certainsense shuts man off from God, it islikewise true that remorse for sinsopens up all the greatness and maj-esty of God’s love, to man’s con-science.” Pope John Paul II

“Your time here is short, veryshort; take another look at the wayin which you spend it. Every actionof yours, every thought, should bethose of a person who expects todie before the day is out. Then whynot keep clear of sin, instead ofrunning away from death? If youaren’t fit to face death today, it’svery unlikely you will be by tomor-row, and you have no guaranteethat there will be any tomorrow, for you.” St. Thomas à Kempis

Second Sunday of Advent: Cycle B

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by proclaiming that a voicecries out in the wilderness of ourlives, calling us to harken to God’slove. This is a time of hearing andunderstanding, of seeking and find-ing, of sensing and responding toGod’s presence in our lives. Theprayers of the faithful could focus onour need to level the mountains ofpride and fill in the valleys of fearfrom which injustice springs forth.Penitential rite: Third form with sec-ond set of sample invocationsOpening Prayer: See Alternate

Sample General Intercessions—My brothers and sisters, we are called tomake straight the path to God. Let usabandon pride, which sets us above God,and fear, which doubts God’s promise tous (that we can earn eternal life by lov-ing Him and his creation). Let us ask theLord to guide us on this straight andnarrow path to eternal life:• For our world leaders, that Jesus theChrist enrich them with spiritual gifts;• For all peoples of the world, that hun-ger for peace and love motivate us alltowards action;• For those who suffer from oppression, that Jesus gather and lead them to theFather;• For the aged and infirm who hunger forconsolation, that they receive the joyfulmessage that our God is here among us;• For our families and community whoare trying to straighten the highways ofour lives, that God will bring us all to afuller understanding of how to live theway God wants us to live.

Memorial Acclamation: 2nd or 3rdThe Lord's Prayer: 4th introductionPrayers over the people: First orSolemn Blessing in Advent

R.C.I.A John the Baptist urged people torepent of their sins, to prepare for thecoming of the Lord. How can youstraighten out your life? What areyou engaged in that takes you downa path away from God? Reflect on the need to level the

mountains of pride, arrogance andnarrow-mindedness that are withinus all. God is merciful. Are you merciful?Contemplate the awesome majestyof God’s love.

Children's Liturgy of the Word The readings today speak of mak-ing straight the crooked path. Whatdoes that mean? Well, it means some-thing like this: If you want to be wor-thy to live in heaven with God for-ever, then it would be worthwhile totake a straight path to that goal. Acrooked path would take longer, andit might not ever get you there. Astraight path is living a life of loveand mercy, of honesty and beauty. Acrooked path is living a life of lies, theft, greed, and hatred._____________________________________________________________________________

FIRST READING: Gen. 3: 9-15, 20“I will put enmity between youroffspring and her offspring.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 98 “Sing a new song to the Lordfor he has worked wonders.”SECOND READING: Eph. 1: 3-6,11-12 “God chose us in Christ be-fore the foundation of the world.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Lk. 1: 28, 42 “Hail Mary, full ofgrace, the Lord is with you; blessedare you among women.”GOSPEL: Lk. 1: 26-38 “Rejoice, favored one, the Lord is with you.”The angel Gabriel comes to Marytelling her to rejoice for she hasfound favor with God. She willbear the Son of God through thepower of the Holy Spirit.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Mary;Rejoicing; Favor with God; Bless-ings; Miracles; Wonders.

FOCUS: “Rejoice, O highly fa-vored daughter! The Lord is withyou.”

REFLECTION: “He who wrote onthe tablets of stone without ironmade Mary with child of the HolyGhost; and He who producedbread in the desert withoutploughing, impregnated the Vir-gin without corruption; and Hewho made the rod to bud withoutrain made the daughter of Davidwithout seed.” St. Augustine

“Mary, give me your Heart: so beau-tiful, so pure, so immaculate; yourHeart so full of love and humilitythat I may be able to receive Jesus inthe Bread of Life and love Him asyou love Him and serve Him in thedistressing guise of the poor.”

Mother Teresa

“Do not be lazy about descending. In the heart is life, and you mustlive there. Do not think that this issomething to be attempted only bythe perfect. No, it is for everyonewho has begun to seek the Lord.”

Theophane the Recluse

“Miracles happen, not in oppositionto nature, but in opposition to whatwe know of nature.” St. Augustine

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The word of Godhas special significance in today’sreadings. Mary, bearer of the “Liv-ing Word,” responds to the word ofGod spoken through the angelGabriel. A bold displaying and in-censing of the Holy Books at thegathering rite would be one way todemonstrate reverence for the wordof God. Litanies and mantras toMary as well as appropriate periodsof silence will help to inspire. Intro-duce the profession of faith by citingMary as an example of the power offaith in one’s life.

R.C.I.A. Mary is a role model for Christiansbecause of her faith and acceptanceof God’s will for her. We go throughtimes of confusion and doubt. Attimes we may feel we are plunginginto the unknown and even intodarkness itself. This is why Mary isso important to us. Through faithshe was able to attain extraordinarystature. This is the case with many ofthe church’s saints. They were ordi-nary people called by God to liveextraordinary lives. Say the Hail Mary frequently. You’ll find it helps. A favorite prayerof Catholics for centuries, it is a giftfrom Christ Himself, through thegospels.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word What do you suppose it was likebeing the child of the woman whowas most blessed among women? She must have been a gentle, lovingmother. What must it have been likefor her, being the mother of such anawesome child? Jesus had a large family. His grand-parents were St. Anne and St.Joaquin. He had an uncle and aunt,St. Zachary and St. Elizabeth, and acousin, St. John the Baptist. Andmany others are mentioned in theNew Testament, and in other his-torical books. They lived 2,000 years

ago in what is now Israel. Then itwas a Roman colony. Do a littleresearch and talk about life in thedays of Christ’s childhood._____________________________________________________________________________

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: TheSpirit of God; Good News; Salva-tion; Patience.

FOCUS: “Rejoice, for the Lord isnear!” We, like John the Baptistand the prophets, are calledthrough the Holy Spirit to proclaimGod’s saving presence in our lives.

REFLECTION: “So, brethren,“rejoice in the Lord,” not in theworld. That is, rejoice in the truth, not in the wickedness; rejoice in thehope of eternity, not in the fadingflower of vanity. That is the way torejoice. Wherever you are on earth, however long you remain on earth,“the Lord is near,” do not be anx-ious about anything.”

St. Anthony of Egypt

“For a stalk to grow or a flower toopen there must be time that can-not be forced; nine months must goby for the birth of a human child; towrite a book or compose music of-ten years must be dedicated to pa-tient research. To find the mysterythere must be patience, interior pu-rification, silence, waiting….”

Pope John Paul II

Let us rejoice:• For the Holy Church of God and forher leaders, that through the HolySpirit, we, the church, may move to-wards a renewal of living in and forChrist;• For all people in all cultures, that theLord bless us all with peace and love;• For all those deprived of freedom toworship, and all who are oppressed be-cause of their holiness, may the messageof Christ, the Good News of God's love, comfort them;• For our families and local community, through the Holy Spirit, may we bringthe Good News of God's presence tothose around us.

R.C.I.A. John the Baptist went beyondpreaching a repentance of sins—heproclaimed the coming of a new era,the coming of the Lamb of God, themediator. In this mediator we finda link between us and the eternal.Advent and Christmas are aboutthis link. We are commissioned inbaptism to become prophets, that isto learn how to read the signs of thetimes. In "seeing" we learn to dis-cern our connectedness with Godand what we should do about it. Jesus came to “heal the brokenhearted.” And how can he do that?By his infinite love for us, that’show. Jesus loves us! Jesus is near!Yes, Lord! My God, how I love you!

Third Sunday of Advent: Cycle B

Children's Liturgy of the Word Christmas is a great celebration, with lots of good food, presents foreveryone, singing and dancing andhaving a good time. And there isnothing wrong with that. It is a timeof rejoicing, and God wants us torejoice. But we must never forgetwhat it is we are celebrating. We arecelebrating the birth of Jesus, thebringing of the Good News to earth,to us, the Good News that Godloves us and wants us to love himand all his children. The birth ofJesus brought a new kind of love toearth, merciful love, love of God inhis creation._____________________________________________________________________________

Let us offer our prayers to God whohas done great things among people:• For people everywhere, that the HolySpirit impregnate our souls with hislove;• For those who work with the poor andsuffering, may we be strengthened inour efforts to be among them;• For those suffering from loneliness andfor those who are dying (that is, all of us),that we recognize God’s presence in ourlives;• For our community and our familieswho welcome Christ into their lives, thatwe may learn to receive God in the poorand suffering of the world;• For each of us, may God’s love for usinspire us to reach for greater heights oflove of God.

R.C.I.A. The Old Testament books ofSamuel are included in the books ofKings in older bibles; they concernKing David and the settling of thetribes in what is now Israel, and thebuilding of King Solomon’s Templein Jerusalem. Today’s readings deal with themystery of the incarnation: Whywas it necessary for God to become ahuman being? Not only to show ushow to live, and love, but to be asacrifice to God, a human sacrifice,to make humans sacred.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Jesus coming to earth throughMary shows us once again that Godworks through people. In somepeople it is easy to see God at work, for instance Mother Teresa ofCalcutta. In others it may be harderto see God, but he is there._____________________________________________________________________________

FOCUS: “““““Good News and great joyto all the world!”

REFLECTION: “..let there be good-will without measure between allbeings. Let good will without mea-sure prevail in the whole world, above, below, around, unstinted, un-mixed with any feeling of differing oropposing interests. If a man remainsteadfastly in this state of mind all thetime, then is come to pass the saying,“Even in this world holiness has beenfound.” Metta Sutta

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: This is a night ofmystical paradox. To create an ap-propriate atmosphere, search for abalance of dynamic, joyful expres-sion and contemplative silence. Con-sider moving directly from the carol-ing service to the Gloria as the intro-ductory rite. This means omitting thepenitential rite. (See General Instruc-tion of the Liturgy of the Hours, nos. 94-96.) The use of incense, candles andHoly Book in procession, togetherwith a dramatic proclamation of theComing of the Word, will help toexpress the depth of this night ofwonder.Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of sample invocations.Preface: See second Christmas prefaceEucharistic Prayer: Roman Canonwith proper commemorations for theChristmas season.

Solemn Blessing- Christmas season.

O all ye angels of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.O all ye waters that be above the heaven,O ye sun and moon,O ye stars of heaven,O all ye winds,O ye fire and heat,Bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.O ye winter and summer,O ye dews and storms of snow,O ye light and darkness,O ye ice and cold,O ye lightenings and clouds,Bless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him above all for ever.O ye mountains and little hills,O all ye things that grow on the earth,O ye seas and rivers,O ye whales and all that move in the waters,O all ye fowls of the air,O all ye beasts and cattleBless ye the Lord: praise and exalt himfor ever.O ye children of men,O ye spirits and souls of the righteous,O ye holy and humble men of heartBless ye the Lord: praise and exalt him for ever.

REFLECTION:“She brought forthher Son, from Whom such ineffablelight and splendour radiated that thesun could not be compared to it....And then I heard the wonderfulsinging of angels.” Bridget of Sweden

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Songs, litanies andinvitations to prayer should focus onthe living Word of God. A processionwith and incensing of the Holy Bookswould demonstrate our devotion tothe Word and its significance in ourlives. The use of handbells during theGloria and memorial acclamationecho the sound of a universe rejoic-ing.

FOCUS: “O Blessed are those whofear the Lord and walk in hisways.”

REFLECTION: “You say that youhave no humility or love. So long asthese are absent, everything spiri-tual is absent. What is spiritual isborn when they are born andgrows as they grow. Humility isacquired by acts of humility, loveby acts of love.”

Theophane the Recluse

“Watch your own step; be slow tocriticize the doings of other people. When we criticize others, we getnothing for our pains; and how of-

ten we make mistakes! How carelessly it can lead us into sin! ... Againand again our judgement about anissue depends on the way our sym-pathies are engaged; a personal pref-erence can easily rob us of the powerto see straight. This obstinacy in ourown opinions would have lesspower to disturb our judgements ifall the desire of our hearts found itsonly scope in God. People are influenced in their ac-tions by undercurrents of self-seek-ing. ... All seems to go well with themas long as everything turns out inaccordance with their wishes, theirplans; but when their wills arethwarted, they lose their balanceand get angry ... Let awareness ofour own self-seeking lead us to livea humble life following the teach-ings of Christ.” St. Thomas à Kempis

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Families can play asignificant role in the celebration oftoday’s liturgy as lectors, servers, ushers, bearers of the gifts, and mu-sicians Keep in mind a broad senseof what constitutes a family. Manyfamilies consist of a single parentwith one child, or one homeless per-son, or even two friends. An introduction to the sprinklingrite: All those who are baptized inChrist are part of the Christian fam-ily. An introduction to the Lord’sPrayer could mention kindness anddedication as building blocks in thestructure of family life.SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of sample invocations.Preface: See Christmas PrefacesEucharistic Prayer: Roman Canonwith the proper commemorations forChristmas.Prayers Over the People: 2, 6, or 7Solemn Blessing for Christmas

R.C.I.A. How can we strengthen familyties? Are you willing to change tomeet family needs? Do you demandthat others in your family change to

suit you? Must we all change toaccomodate each other? Can youmake another person change? There is really only one person youcan change and that is yourself. Youcan’t change what others do, youcan only change the way you reactto what they do. Discuss the elements involved instrengthening family ties.• What are the qualities of a strong

family?• What can we learn from the family

of Mary, Joseph and Jesus?• In what ways do you see the

church as an extended family?Reflect on a concept of family thatgoes beyond the nuclear family. The words of Jesus encourage us toseek the Lord in all types of peopleand to recognize others as membersof God's family.____________________________________________________________________________

believer is essential for a true Chris-tian life. True Christian life is the lifeof grace. A man makes some reli-gious resolution: but in order to beable to act according to it, it is neces-sary that grace be united with hisspirit. When this union is present, moral strength, hitherto evidentonly temporarily in his first enthusi-asm, is impressed on his spirit andremains there always. This re-estab-lishment of the moral strength of thespirit is effected by the regeneratingaction of baptism, through whichman is granted justification and thestrength to act 'after God in right-eousness and true holiness'."

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The placement ofthis celebration at the end of theChristmas season should be noted. This is another manifestation of theincarnation. God made flesh is re-vealed to the world through bap-tism into his mission on earth. To-day's gospel reading can be inter-preted to signify our own need to goforth into the world with the GoodNews of God's salvation throughJesus Christ. This can be an appro-priate time to call for lay ministersand to reflect how individuals canbring the light of Christ to others.Current lay ministers could contrib-ute some piece in the bulletin or aspart of the homily on the functionand value of their ministry.Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of invocations.Prayers over the people: NinthSolemn Blessing for Christmas orSolemn Blessing for Epiphany

The object is to leave the dis-tractions of the world temporarilyso that peace and the awareness ofGod may be internalized and giveone strength to live in the world.
