ADVENT: A TIME TO PREPARE

The Catechism tells us, “The coming of God’s Son to earth is an event of such immensity that God willed to prepare for it over centuries… He announces him through the mouths of the prophets…” (CCC 522)

“When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present the ancient expectancy of the Messiah; for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming” (CCC 524).

Today’s Gospel begins with, “Be watchful! Be alert!” for “You do not know when the time will come”

Reflection: “Advent can be a time to make sure – through prayer, through Mass, through helping the very poor – that we keep in touch with God. We allow God’s grace and care to flow through us.”

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel, centered on the

ADVENT

Today, we begin the new liturgical year with the 1st Sunday of Advent. There is expectation in the air of the celebration of Jesus’ birth. In fact, Advent celebrates three dimensions of Christ’s coming in history, mystery and majesty. The four weeks of Advent remind us of the expectant joy of Israel as she awaited the coming of the Savior, born in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago. In addition, we Christians celebrate Jesus’ coming to us in the mysteries of the sacraments and in the daily encounters in which the Holy Spirit moves us interiorly. Then there is Jesus’ final

coming in glory to which we look forward at the end of time.

Let us make time this season, though full of shopping and parties, for quiet meditation on our relationship with the Lord. Am I grateful for Jesus’ coming in history as one of us–enduring the hardships as well as the joys of human life? Do I welcome Jesus coming into my heart through the mysteries of the sacraments? Have I pre-pared myself to meet Jesus in His glorious coming at the final judgment or at my own death? Let us pray that we might be able to say: “Come Lord Jesus, You are welcome in my life and in my heart, now and forever!”

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL

This is the day we launch the new translation of the Roman Missal. As you see in the pews, we now have cards of both the written text as well as the musical edition of the text. Please do not hesitate to utilize those cards as we become more and more familiar with the new responses. It will take weeks, if not months to be comfortable with the new words used. Your priests have much

more to adjust to in the many new texts used for the prayers of the Mass. Let us be patient with one another as mistakes will be made; but slowly we shall master the new translation. Take this as an opportunity to move from an automatic response to an intentional praying of the texts from the heart. May the new prayers and responses lead us more and more into the Heart of Jesus Christ Our Lord!

PRAYER FOR STEWARDSHIP

“Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise You and we thank You for Your great power and Your faithful love. Everything we are and everything we have is Your gift, and after having created us, You have given us into the keeping of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Fill our minds with His truth and our hearts with His love, that in His Spirit we may be bonded together in a community of faith, a parish

family, a caring people. In the Name and Spirit of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent and our material gifts as an outward sign of the treasure we hold in Jesus. Amen.”

Please be reminded that St. Vincent De Paul Society nor Sr. Cristina’s office do not accept these donations. Please bring them straight to Goodwill, Savers, Thrift Shops or other places that can use them. We don’t have storage rooms to put them. Thank you for your cooperation.

Catholic Charities & Today’s Gospel: 1st Sunday of Advent (Mark 13:33-37) We are not being asked to wait passively for Christ rather we are asked to put on the “cloak of Christ” at all times so that we see Christ in our midst daily. We are to watch for and with Christ in the here and now. Our hearts and minds must be fixed on Christ now so that when Christ comes again we are prepared. Do you watch out for God’s grace and action in your life with joyfulness and hope? Today the first candle on the Advent wreath will be lit in anticipation and hope of Christ’s birth. How are you preparing for Christmas? One way to prepare for Christ’s birth is to recognize and be in solidarity with those on the margins; engaging Christ in our midst. Many seniors (60+ years of age) in our community are in need of car rides to the grocery store and doctors appointments. During the holidays the elderly, due to lack of family around them, can feel very lonely. To volunteer and accompany seniors during this holiday season please contact senior transportation at Catholic Charities, (505) 724-4634.
