First Sunday of Lent — March 1, 2020

“And He was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as

light.” I consider one of the greatest blessings of my life to be the time some seminarians and myself

personally met Saint Theresa of Calcutta, aka Mother Theresa. Every one of us listened intently to eve-

ry word she spoke and we marveled at the holiness that radiated from her. It was as if she possessed

her own “luminosity”, for the light of Christ came forth through every ounce of her being. Like Jesus in the Transfig-

uration account of today’s Gospel, she seemed to take on a heavenly light, which was a common perception of eve-

ryone who encountered her. Because Mother Theresa gave herself so completely to Jesus Christ in prayer, worship,

and charitable deeds, she became a reflection of the One she served . . . a reflection of the Light of Christ. Maybe

this should be our Lenten and lifetime resolution . . . to be saint, a person who makes it easier for others to see God.

A point to ponder: Nobody is too broken for the grace of Jesus.

The Broader Communication of the Family

21. Conjugal communion constitutes the foundation on which is built the broader communion of the family, of par-

ents and children, of brothers and sisters with each other, of relatives and the other members of the household.

This communion is rooted in the natural bonds of flesh and blood, and grows to its specifically human perfection

within the establishing and maturing of the still deeper and richer bonds of the spirit: the love that animates the in-

terpersonal relationships of the different members of the family constitutes the interior strength that shapes and

animates the family communion and community.

A day at the movies

A reminder to our youth, grades k-6, that we will be going to the Playhouse Theater in Mott this Sun-

day, March 1st, to see the movie, Doctor Doolittle. All expenses are paid, so just come and enjoy a

great movie and also some snacks and drinks for during the movie. We will have a light lunch after

the 10:30 Mass at Saint Mary’s and then we will depart at about 12:30 p.m. We should return later

in the afternoon, sometime around 5:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there!

Grazie Mille! [Thank you very much!]: Thank you to everyone who made our annual Italian Meal

such a great success. First, thank you to Kris Ehlis for masterminding the whole affair, with a lot of

time spent on buying the foodstuffs for the meal; preparing the workers and their various shifts;

and taking care of the publicity. Thank you for all of your hard work and efforts. Second, thank you

to the youth and their parents who did the food preparation the day before the meal or worked the various shifts on

the day of the meal. The people present for the meal had so much good to say about how it all unfolded, so hats off

to you for providing them with an enjoyable dining experience. Third, thank you to Vivian Hernandez, Marjean

Schultz, Kris Ehlis, and Connie Jalbert for making the two rooms look like ma & pa bistros right out of Rome. We had

so many nice comments about the beautiful ambience, so thank you for sharing your aesthetic gifts. Lastly, thank

you to everyone who came that evening to support our youth and enjoy a great meal at the same time. We enjoyed

the opportunity to serve you and we look forward to doing the same next year. I was told that maybe I should cut

back on the garlic next year. But an Italian meal without lots of garlic? Impossible. That’s like Fr. Gary’s fridge with

31st Annual African Mission Appeal , which begins next weekend in

every parish in the Diocese of Bismarck. Your gift will help support

the work of our Mission Team as they minister on our behalf to our

brothers and sisters in Kisii, Kenya, East Africa. The African Mission

Appeal brochure and envelopes are available for you to take home

and read. Please prayerfully consider a generous gift to the appeal.

The ABC’s of our Catholic Faith

Censer: Also called a thurible, it is a vessel for burning incense (a mixture of aromatic gums) at solemn ceremo-

nies, especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is the bane of some Catholics, who dislike the adverse effects

of incense upon their senses and respiratory faculties, but the censer is a dear friend of Father Gary, who loves

the symbolism of incense within sacred ceremonies. First, it reminds us, in the words of the psalmist, “That our pray-

ers rise like incense” unto the Lord. The symbol of the incense rising up to the heavens reminds us that God hears

every prayer we lift up to Him in faith and He will answer them according to His divine will. Second, incense, in the

wisdom of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, forms a “spiritual buffer” between the priest and God’s people and the altar

of God, which is incensed along with the gifts upon it. This serves as a visual spiritual reminder that we are to ap-

proach the Eucharistic Sacrifice with humility, awe, and holy fear. Sometimes we can become too familiar or casual

with the great mysteries of our Faith, which may downplay their sacredness and spiritual significance in our lives.

Incense reminds us to be like Moses at the burning bush . . . approach the Lord with wonderment and reverence.

Third, incense within the Holy Mass reminds us that though God is most present in the Holy Eucharist, we should

also remember and honor the presence of God in other elements of the Holy Mass. Thus, we incense the Book of

the Gospels (Evangeliarium), to show reverence to the words and deeds of our Savior. We incense the people pre-

sent, to show God’s presence in them because of their Baptism and subsequent immersion in the life of the Blessed

Trinity. We also incense the celebrant (a bishop or priest), to show that in their sacramental ministry, they stand in

persona Christi (in the person of Christ). Lastly, incense may be used to offer a sweet-smelling odor in a church, es-

pecially if the building has been overtaken by the strong smell of garlic after one of Father Gary’s Italian Meals.

Chalice veil: this square piece of cloth, which matches the color of the celebrant’s chasuble, covers the

chalice and the paten from the beginning of the Holy Mass until the offertory and then after the purifi-

cation of vessels (after Holy Communion). It is not in common usage anymore, which is regrettable,

because it shows a reverence for the chalice and paten which will be used in the consecration of the

sacred species, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. When you veil sacred items, it maintains a degree of sacredness

for them and for their intended purpose as well; it builds a sense of awe. To utilize an analogy from every day life,

consider the time and effort you put into wrapping Christmas gifts for your loved ones. As they open each layer, the

anticipation builds for the gift you have prepared for them with great love and joy. You could save yourself much

time and effort and just hand them the gift . . . no colorful wrapping paper or ribbons, but it just wouldn’t be the

same. This applies to veiling sacred vessels with a chalice veil. As we reverently unveil the chalice and the paten, it

reminds us that what we are doing at the Holy Mass is holy and every layer of reverence adds to the holiness.

On the lighter side: A little boy was in church with his parents and watched the ushers pass

around the collection plates. When they came near his family pew, the little boy said loudly,

“Don’t pay for me dad; I’m under five.”

A time to go deeper in our Faith: If you wish to grow closer to the Lord during the sacred season of

Lent, then prayerfully consider coming to our parishes’ mission, A Walk Through Holy Week, on

March 13, 14, and 15. The speaker will be Dr. Leroy Huizenga, a well- loved and respected professor

of theology at the University of Mary in Bismarck. He will offer three talks: Friday, March 13 at 7:00

p.m., The Life of Jesus Christ; Saturday, March 14 after the Saint Mary’s 5:00 p.m. Holy Mass and a

supper provided for all attending, The Death of Jesus Christ; and Sunday, March 15th, after the 10:30

a.m. Mass and a lunch provided for those attending, The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. There will be a

free will offering for the meals on Saturday and Sunday. I look forward to seeing you at our parishes’ mission. Some

times we just need to escape the busyness of life and enter into something spiritually renewing. It’s good for the

soul! Plus, you get a break from hearing Fr. Gary drone on and on from the pulpit. It’s a win-win for everyone!
