No. 1/2017 2nd March 2017 Flying Start in Kindy What a start to Kindy it has been! The children in TA18A have had a whirlwind start to the year, getting straight into our colours, shapes and numbers in Numeracy and starting their Peggy Lego writing patterns in Literacy. We have counted birthday candles and honey bees and have made beautiful artwork that is displayed in our classroom. We have learnt about tall man, small man, sideways and Jack and Jill and have painted these patterns all around school with our brand new paintbrushes. After a bumpy start with our classroom, the children have settled really well back into the routine of school and are really enjoying all the donations from the generous parents and community members of Currambine Primary School. Thank you to everyone who helped our superstars love their classroom again.

Year One, TA272017 is off to a great start in TA 27! We have had a wonderful time settling into being big Year 1’s! We have been getting to know each other, learning the classroom and school procedures, and adjusting to being in school all day again! Thanks to our incredible Pre Primary teachers, we are already amazing mathematicians! We jumped right into our number sense unit and are working with numbers well past 100! We have also been measuring up a storm by using non-standard units such as pop sticks, paper clips and unifix cubes to measure the length of objects around the classroom. Literacy keeps us busy all morning. We have been working hard on completing recounts that are informative and entertaining. Mrs Seivwright and Mrs Lloyd are very impressed with how well we are learning our spelling words each week and remembering to spell them correctly in our writing. We love our Guided Reading rotations, we get to play lots of games and go on the iPads. We got together with all the other Year 1 classes and kicked off History with a hilarious power point presentation. We had to match past and future photos with the correct teachers, it’s not as easy as it sounds! Science has been keeping our ears tuned, we are learning about the different sounds that certain objects make. We have even been predicting the different sounds read in stories and heard on the eBoard. In Health, we have been learning how important it is for us to make good choices and we each set ourselves a proactive goal for the week. Can you believe we’ve packed all that and a whole lot more into our first four weeks in Year 1! We can’t wait to see what else the year holds for us.

The Angkor Project

Welcome to the 2017 school year.Throughout 2017 you will hear about fundraising activities for Currambine Kids Caring for Cambodia as part of the Angkor Project. The Angkor Project is a collaboration between the Western Australian Department of Education and the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport that builds sister school relationships to enhance the education of students in both Cambodia and Western Australia. The motto of this campaign is “Children helping to rebuild the schools of Cambodia through sister school relationships”.During the period 1975 – 1979 the Khmer Rouge revolution, led by Pol Pot, destroyed the education system in Cambodia. This was followed by years of civil war. It is only since 1998, once peace had begun, that restoration of the school system began. Cambodian education is characterised by low levels of participation, insufficient classrooms, 70% of schools are without water, toilets, electricity and they have very few books or teaching materials. How does this help our children? The Angkor Project not only assists our sister school, it also educates our students and teachers. Students learn the power of working together to achieve a set goal, caring for the welfare of others and develop knowledge about a culture other than their own. Our participation with the Angkor Project also links with the Australian National Curriculum. The children at our sister school, Mohasaing Primary School, are grateful to be allowed to go to school. They are very hard workers and incredibly bright. They are working hard towards developing a brighter future for themselves and their families. As part of our fundraising activities this year the Cambodia Committee are busy planning another Adventure Walk. This is a fantastic family activity aimed at educating our community about Cambodia while encouraging families to spend quality time together exploring our local environment. This year we have planned our ADVENTURE WALK for SUNDAY 07 MAY. Please put this date in your diary and help us to make a difference for the children of Mohasaing. Further information and registration forms will come towards the end of first term.We will also continue our 5 cent Fridays this year. Every Friday children can deposit 5c coins into the donation cup in their classroom. This money all goes to our sister school. So far over the years those 5c coins have raised $1800 for our sister school. Further information about The Angkor Project can be accessed on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Angkor-Project/155187707920743?fref=ts

News from Year 3, TA41

In TA 41 we have been learning about Growth Mindset. If you have a growth mindset it means that you don’t give up when you are presented with a challenge. You look for other strategies and always try your best knowing that it may take some time and effort. If you have a healthy growth mindset you are also looking for ways to improve on a task. We created our very own superheroes to represent the learning power that we have in our classroom. We have a positive attitude and are strong and powerful when we are learning! Up, up and away!
