With an improving econ- omy, millions of people just like you established their own businesses and became their own boss. Now is your opportunity to join those millions of self-employed people and small busi- nesses in the United States. These are enterprising times. Faced with limited entry level jobs, students are turning their talents into business ventures. Experienced professionals are choosing the freedom and flexi- bility that comes with self-employ- ment. Middle aged people are finding gaps in the market and filling them. The over 50’s are leaving the insecu- rity of modern corporate life, launch- ing new ventures, to support their lifestyle as their life expectancy grows. Regardless of your age or current employment, there is potential to turn a passion or skill from your profes- sional or personal life into a bright business idea. Embracing your entre- preneurial spirit and coupling it with free and low-cost technology, you are empowered and enabled to sell to local markets and reach customers on a global scale. Easy to say and easy to do! Three good reasons to start a business today: Low start-up costs – many busi- nesses can now start with less than a few hundred dollars in actual startup costs. With a smartphone and a hand- ful of business cards, you can instant- ly set up your operation and quickly make sales. And…you can do it from home or any- place else you can get an internet connection. Enabling technology cheap computers and phone equipment, social media platforms and online shopping carts provide start-up compa- nies with a powerful way to market, just like big business. Selling and pro- moting yourself online is affordable, achievable and rewarding. Small business- es are more nimble than the behemoths. Businesses are being built on Facebook and pro- moted via Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, selling everything from heirloom vegetable seeds to e-books and financial services and artisan foods. Whatever your passion you can sell it as a product or service. High level of support – when start- ing a business, you won’t be alone! There is an abundance of support to help you start and grow, including public and private sector support. In fact, there is so much data out there on starting and growing businesses that you may want a safari guide to get you through the information jun- gle. TEC is just such a guide. The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas (www.TEC-CenTex.com) assists with mentoring and coaching individual businesses, providing workshops and seminars on specific aspects of small business and connecting new entre- preneurs with experienced small business owners to deliver advice and provide business specific expert men- toring. With all this available, can you resist the draw to become your own boss? For every business, regardless of its current state, there is a logical set of next steps. Often, the business owner knows many of these activities. Yet, no business has to be an “island”. Help is just a call or click away. Use it! Local nurseries andhome and garden cen-ters are busy gettingready for spring and

already have a good supply of fertilizers, chemicals, tools and garden and patioequipment, as well as house plants andsome cold tolerant plants. Shipments ofannuals, bedding plants and other springand summer garden items will be comingsoon.

Now is a great time to prepare your lawnand garden to make sure that the grass isgreen, and the flowers and shrubs are burst-ing with color as the spring and summerseason arrives.

Your March checklist should start withcutting the dead winter growth off both the

grass and shrubs, Brian Coffield, nursery-man at Home Depot said. After the threat offrost has passed, which is usually March 15,the grass should be cut a little shorter thanusual to about 2 inches and then it shouldhave fertilizer applied. Make sure the fertil-izer is watered into the soil to prevent burn-ing. A combination fertilizer and weed killermay be used if weeds are a problem.

Prune roses and other shrubs before thespring growth starts and clean and preparebeds now for plant-ing. A pruning paintis recommended ifcuts are made on treebranches. Adding mulchto beds has many benefits:holds in moisture, controls weeds and pro-tects bare soil from erosion.

If you are planning a vegetable garden, itis a good idea to have a soil test performedto find out the fertilizer needs of yourplants. While waiting on results from thesoil testing report, till the garden space andadd compost. Some of the cold tolerant veg-etables such as onions, broccoli and lettucecan be planted outside now, but wait untillater for tomatoes and other warm seasonvegetables.

When planning new landscape additions,

be careful in selecting plants. Choose plantsbased on their sun or shade and soil typeneeds. In addition, choose plants with

drought tolerance andresistance to insects anddisease to reduce land-scape maintenance and

impact on the environment.Alvin Simcik, a certified Texas

nurseryman and owner of Cen-Tex Nurserysince 1978, recommends plants that areproven to work well in this area such asnadina, yaupon holly, possum haw holly andantique roses. Snapdragons, begonias andpetunias are also popular bedding plants.

M A S T E RGARDENER’SSPRING PLANTSALELocal gardeners will have achance to buy plants and gatherinformation from the experts atthe Bell County Master Gardener’sSpring Plant Sale on Saturday,March 23. The sale will featureperennials, vegetables, herbs, suc-culents, roses and trees, as well asinformation booths. MasterGardeners will be available toanswer questions.

4 Strategies for SuccessfulFacebook Marketing

Facebook continues to be the dominant player inthe social media montage. Facebook can be used toattract potential customers and contributes to brandrecognition. Here are four strategies to makeFacebook work for your business.

Make Meaningful Connections:Research shows that you can successfullymanage no more than 150 online relation-ships. You need to identify 150 or fewer“friends” who are willing to do business

with you and interact with them at least once amonth. Don’t just hit the “like” button. Look for postswhere you can congratulate them, share a resourceor otherwise engage with them. If you allocate 15-20minutes per day to post on at least 5-10 of yourFacebook friends’ accounts, you will have no troublestaying in regular contact with the most valuablemembers of your database.

Use Facebook Marketplace:Many companies are aware of Facebookbusiness pages, but do you know aboutFacebook Marketplace? FacebookMarketplace functions much like eBay. It’sideal for posting information about your

products or services. Because Google and othersearch engines now catalogue the public portions ofFacebook, using Marketplace can also improve yoursearch engine rankings.

Post Videos:Search engines love video. Posting videosabout your trade and/or services becomes away to achieve better search engine rank-ings as well as engage Facebook followers.

Experiment withFacebook Ads:What makes these ads so powerful is thatFacebook has catalogued incredibleamounts of data about their users. You can

target specific locations, age groups and demograph-ics. Determine who the target is for your business. What income would your customer need? What agegroup are you targeting? What are their professions?Facebook will allow you to target these groups inyour ads.

By implementing these key strategies, your businesscan stand out in the social media arena.

By: Kristi Sykora, Temple Parks & Leisure, Leadership Temple Class of 2012

On February 12, Leadership Temple had the opportu-nity to learn about education in Temple as we touredsurrounding school educational campuses.

One notable thing we learnedwas that local public schools andarea colleges are experiencingnew and durable building renova-tions designed to lower mainte-nance costs for years to come.Beautiful new expansions from theelementary level up to area col-leges will enhance the educational experience for all ages. Thesenecessary improvements alsoinclude new educational programs

to benefit Temple area students of all ages.Next, we toured the new Travis Middle School building, which will have a new

entrance facing 25th Street once it is completed. The initial move to the newaddition is scheduled after Spring Break 2013. A common feature we learnedabout is a single color theme for each hallway to aid students to identify class-rooms easily. Mr. Riley showed us his Math and Science CAD classroom that isaimed at boosting these skills sets for students in a fun way. Middle schools nowhave a whole school program designed to prepare students for more advancedclasses as they move into high school.

Scott Elementary currently has building improvements taking place on theircampus as do other campuses in the Temple area. Elementary schools haveimplemented the Gateway to Technology program to teach students computersskills in younger grades. Cscope is a practical new program implemented forteachers to prepare lessons and to maintain consistent learning skills throughoutTemple schools.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is in the process of building a large sportsstadium along with other additions we can look forward to enjoying in thefuture. Temple College has added a new nursing department complete with com-puter aided mock patients. They also have added a dental hygiene department.

Here you can be scheduled for both lowcost teeth cleaning and xrays. The campusof Texas A&M College in our area will alsobe an asset to complete a bachelors ormasters degree in varied degree programs. The first building on this expansive cam-pus has recently been completed and thecollege has plans to continue its growth.

This tour proved to be an exciting tripand we were very impressed by theimprovements and gains for our students’ education.
