Preparation:Basecoat the sides of the bird house and the support pole under the bird house with Soft SageThe roof, the base board, and the circle base are basecoated with a mix of Soft Sage and Arbor Green(1:1)When using a mix for a basecoat, always save a little in a small container for touch ups later.Shade the top of the roof with a soft wide fl oat of Arbor Green. Let dry, trace on the patterns.Turn the side patterns to line up with the stems coming off the roof.

Painting Instructions:1. Stems, curls, and leaves-Using a size 6/0 Script Liner and size 2 Liner, all of the stems and curls are Medium Hauser Green. On the wide sections of the curls, shade each end as it widens with fi ne lines of Evergreen. High-light the center of each wide section with fi ne lines of Foliage Green.Using a size 12 Shader, the leaves are basecoated with one coat of Medium Hauser Green. Shade the stem end with a wide fl oat of Evergreen. Highlight the tips of the leaves with a fl oat of Foliage Green.Using a size 6/0 Script Liner and size 2 Liner, the center vein and strokes are Evergreen.

Softly shade the leaf again with Evergreen and highlight with Foliage Green.

2. Bird-Basecoat the bird with Baby Blue. Shade the upper edge of the body and top of the head with a fl oat of Victorian Blue. Highlight the lower edge of the body and face with a fl oat of Warm White.Tint the upper area of the chest with a soft fl oat of Melon. Add a small fl oat of Melon for the cheek.The tail curls are Baby Blue, shaded on the inside of the curl with Victorian Blue. Highlight and defi ne the curl with a line of a mix of Baby Blue and a touch of Warm White.The fi ne lines coming out between the curls are Victorian Blue, with dots of Baby Blue and Warm White on their tips.The strokes by the sides of the tail curls and on top of the head are a brush mix of Victorian Blue and Baby Blue.The strokes and crosshatching for the wing are a brush mix of Baby Blue and a touch of Warm White.The eye is Payne’s Grey. The beak and strokes for the feet are Yellow Ochre.Highlight the eye, beak, and cheek with a fi ne line of Warm White.

3. Cream Flower on roof-Basecoat the petals with Light Mocha. Shade the base of each petal with a soft fl oat of Yellow Ochre.Highlight the outer edges of the lower three petals with a fl oat of Warm White.Highlight the upper petals with a soft fl oat of Melon.The center is Yellow Ochre shaded with Burgundy Wine on the stem side.The stamen lines coming out of the center are short lines of Antique Rose.

The dots at the base of the stamens are Burgundy Wine, and the dots at the top of the stamen are Warm White.Outline each petal with two lines of Warm White. The dot between the lines is Melon.

4. Tulip fl ower on roof-The ‘S’ stroke petals are Antique Rose. Shade with fi ne lines of Burgundy Wine from the stem up.Highlight from the curl down with fi ne lines of Melon. Highlight the tip of the curl with a brush mix of Melon and a touch of Warm White.The fi ve comma stroke petals are Melon. Shade from the bottom up with fi ne lines of Antique Rose.Highlight the tops with a fl oat of Warm White.The two stamen lines are Antique Rose. The dots between the stamens and on the stem of the fl ower are a brush mix of Melon and Warm White. Top with a few dots of Warm White.

5. Small yellow fl ower on roof and front of bird house-Basecoat the petals with French Vanilla. Shade from the bottom up with a fl oat of Yellow Ochre.Add detail lines in the shade are with fi ne lines of Melon.Overstroke the petals with Warm White. The stamens are Burgundy Wine with dots of Warm White.The dot connecting the fl ower to the stem is French Vanilla.

6. Small Blue fl owers-Double load a size 2 or 4 Shader with Warm White and Baby Blue, making 4 to 5 small ‘c’ strokes for the petals.Deepen some petals with a soft fl oat of Victorian Blue.The center is French Vanilla, shad-ed with Burgundy Wine. The dots around the top of the center are Warm White and the dots around the bottom are Burgundy Wine. Highlight the very center with a dot of French Vanilla. Surrounding these blue fl owers are loose stroke leaves of a double load of Arbor Green and Soft Sage using a size 4 Shader.

7.Pink fl ower on side-The top four petals are basecoated French Vanilla. Shade their base with a fl oat of Melon. Repeat with a much smaller fl oat of Burgundy Wine. Highlight the top edge of the 3

petals with a fl oat of Warm White.Basecoat the rest of the fl ower with Melon. Shade the lower side with a fl oat of Antique Rose.Highlight the upper side with a fl oat of Peaches and Cream.The lines on the lower section are a brush mix of Peaches and Cream and Warm White.The center scallops are side load fl oats of Warm White with a dot of Warm White inside each scallop.The line below the scallops is Warm White with another line of Burgundy Wine.Highlight the top edge of the pink section with fl oats of Peaches and Cream.Add a fi ne line of Burgundy Wine under these fl oats.Outline the top four petals and scallop edge of the fl ower with loose lines of Warm White with a touch of Peaches and Cream.The stamens are Burgundy Wine with dots of Burgundy Wine on the stamens and on the stem of the fl ower.

8. Raffi a ties, bird perch, and loose tendrils-Using the 6/0 Script Liner, the raffi a ties are Yellow Ochre, shaded with lines of Cocoa and highlighted on the tips with French Vanilla.The bird perch is Cocoa.You can add some loose tendrils if desired with very fi ne lines of Evergreen.

9. Filler Strokes-The strokes on the detail page are numbered to correspond with the following colors.the darkest strokes are the longest and as the color gets lighter the strokes get shorter.when I am working in a color series, I do not clean my brush between strokes, just wipe.(Use the brush that best fi ts the area – either the size 2 or 4 Liner)Yellow- 1. Cocoa 2. Yellow Ochre 3. French Vanilla 4. French Vanilla and Warm WhiteRed-

10. Stand (refer to the photo for color placement)The top round turning on the stand is Arbor Green. The next one down is Baby Blue, The next one down is a mix of Melon and a touch of Warm White. the bottom round section is French VanillaThe curls on the base are done the same as in #1. The strokes are num-bered on the detail page for color.The dots are Soft Sage.The bottom routed edge is Arbor Green. The cut edge of the base board of the house is Arbor Green.The lines in the upper corners of the roof section are Arbor Green with dashes of Melon between.

Finishing:Allow the painting to dry thoroughly. Erase any visible graphite lines. Varnish with several coats of DuraClear Varnish – Satin; allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next. You can also sand lightly between coats.
