Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the month of June, on June 12 to be exact, we will switch to our summer schedule. Beginning June 12 and continuing through September 11, we will have just one Sunday service at 9:30 a.m. This summer, I’m asking you to take the opportunity of coming together in one service, to make an effort to get to know someone new – or to get to know someone better. When we have two services, most members regularly attend either one or the other – and that makes it hard to get to know the folks who regularly attend the service you don’t regularly attend. So as we come together this summer, try sitting in a new place. Someone might already be sitting in your regular spot anyway. Sit near someone you don’t know, or don’t know well. Introduce yourself. Share the peace and share something about who you are and/or why CTS is important to you.

I’m writing this article on the day I was also writing a sermon for Pentecost Sunday, when my thoughts have been pulled to the nature and activity of the Holy Spirit. Martin Luther, in his explanation to the third article of the Apostles’ Creed,

1 said that the

work of the Holy Spirit is to call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify the whole Christian Church. We are ―gathered‖ by the Holy Spirit for worship, for the sake of one another, for the support of one another, and for the chance to grow together in faith and service. I know that many are away for some of the weekends in summer for vacations and all kinds of activities, but when you are around this summer, when the Spirit has gathered us together, let’s make an effort to enjoy the fruits of the Spirit’s gathering work – and enjoy the company, the prayers, the praises, and the community that God has called together in this place.

In Christ,

Pastor Kari Parsons

ALTAR FLOWERS FOR 2016

We have some open slots on the 2016 chart for altar flowers during July–December. The chart is posted in the hallway. Please sign up to provide flowers for Sunday church services. In addition, you can mark on the chart if you would like to give the flowers to Sunrise of Montgomery Village, next door, for the enjoyment of the residents.

This is a way to give glory to God and to commemorate a special event in your life (e.g., birthday, anniversary, graduation, or baptism). After the last Sunday service, the floral arrangement may be taken home for your family to enjoy or if you marked it on the sign-up sheet, they will be given to the Sunrise of Montgomery Village next door for the enjoyment of the residents.

The cost of the flowers is $35. Make checks payable to ―CTS‖ and indicate on your check or envelope that the money is for altar flowers.

DE-RALLY SUNDAY PICNIC

Come and join us for a picnic at CTS on De-Rally Sunday, following the service on June 12. All are welcome. We will play volleyball, and there will be activities for all ages. Bring along a side dish, dessert, or adult beverage to share, as well as lawn chairs and games. We hope to see you there!

ALTAR FLOWERS FOR 2016

The 2016 chart for altar flowers is posted in the hallway. Sign up now and throughout 2016 to provide flowers for Sunday church services (except during Lent when flowers are not used on the altar). In addition, you can mark on the chart if you would like to give the flowers to Sunrise at Montgomery Village next door for the enjoyment of the residents.

This is a way to give glory to God and to commemorate a special event in your life (e.g., a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or baptism). FARMERS’ MARKET

The Farmers’ Market will start Saturday, June 4, and run until the end of October. As in previous years, we will need two types of volunteers each week. The first of which is the welcoming presence. In this role, you will help set up information about CTS, welcome anyone who enters the church, and answer questions about the church (or refer them to someone else if you don’t know the answer). One new thing this year is the mobile free library. It will be located in the Narthex and will be wheeled out

while the market is running (then wheeled in when the market is finished). The second type of volunteer is the gleaner. In this role, you will be taking donated produce from the market to Manna’s warehouse on Gaither Road. Detailed instructions are available if you want to learn more about it. In addition, you can talk to Leon LaCross or Hunter Tjugum if you have any questions.

GIFTS OF HOPE—MAKING A DIFFERENCE TODAY AND

TOMORROW

Thank you for supporting Gifts of Hope last Advent. Gifts of Hope raised a total of $111,635 from the congregations in our Synod and from online support. Members and friends of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church purchased gifts valued at $1,465. All funds have been distributed to the designated beneficiary organizations. Your support provides hope for today and hope for tomorrow. Thanks to the volunteers who presented this alternative gift-giving option to your congregation.

Anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, memorials—the Gifts of Hope Catalog is available year-round at our website: www.giftsofhopedc.org. Select a gift from the online catalog, and you will receive an all-purpose card to present to your honored loved one.

Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? by Dave Eggers

Book club will meet at 7 p.m. on June 5 to discuss the Dave Eggers novel, Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? One critic said of this book, ―As is always true with Eggers, those ideas – laid out here in

quasi-Socratic dialogue – are inherently interesting. I can think of few contemporary American writers who convey such a sense of urgency about the mess we're in – or how important it is that we, like the Israelites surrounding Zechariah, resurrect the once-glorious Temple. Eggers pulls no punches. . . Eggers makes these points even as he simultaneously manages ―empathy for Thomas’ plight, as a man who has inherited a fallen world he never made.‖ We hope you can join us.

DINNER VESPERS Wednesday, June 8

6:30 p.m.

Our first dinner went really well and was well received! We also had a nice turnout.

Since our access to the kitchen is still limited, we ask that you bring items that are somewhat prepped and we’ll do the finishing steps before we sit down at the table.

We will have an RSVP sign-up sheet again.

Please keep in mind that this is not a full potluck dinner – we have selected a simple menu, similar to our soup suppers. So, if you sign up for a food/drink item, please honor that commitment. If something comes up and you won’t be able to make it, try to get someone to cover for you.

Finally, the food and drink list will be modified this time to account for a larger turnout; additional items will be marked as needed if the RSVP list hits a certain number.

If you have any questions, please see Valerie Mayer or Barbara Harner.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF QUILTING

Quilts are one of the most requested items from LWR. Last summer, members of CTS gathered on Wednesday evenings to assemble about 30 quilts and we’re inviting you to join us again this summer.

Beginning Tuesday evening, June 14, you are invited to join us in the parlor, beginning at 7:00 p.m., to help assemble quilts. The assembly work is easy - if you can cut with scissors, measure with a ruler, tie a knot, you’ve got skills we can use.

We have applied for a Thrivent Action Team grant again this summer to cover the cost of supplies – the quilt batting and some sheet covers. You can help by donating sheets for the outer layers – these can be new or clean, gently used sheets (no stains or tears). We can use flat twin sheets or flat/fitted full, queen, or king-size. Also, the fabric cannot have any religious symbols, any U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. There will be a box in the office under the table for your donations. If you choose to purchase new sheets, the Mainstay twin flat sheets at Walmart work the best – they’re $5 and they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

You can help by joining us! We will gather every Tuesday evening through the summer so there are plenty of opportunities to help. Feel free to invite a friend or a neighbor, of any age, to join you.

Have a question? Talk to Valerie, Arlene, Kathy, or Barbara. Come – join us. It’ll be fun – we promise!

Spring Confirmation Retreat: From April 22 to 24, seven confirmation students (George, Dylan, Jerry, Tyler, Morris,

Leesaye, and Emily) along with Anna Mayer, Valerie Mayer, Barbara, Tony, and Pastor spent the weekend at Mar-Lu-Ridge for the Spring Confirmation retreat. This semester’s focus was worship, and the students, with some help and prodding, put together a new worship service that CTS will use for Rally and De-Rally Sundays as well as on the Confirmation retreats for the next three years. Fortunately, the weather cooperated with us this time, and we were able to spend time outside engaging in group-building activities and having a campfire with s’mores Saturday evening.

Shema: On Sunday afternoon, April 24, Edima Elinewinga accompanied Catherine, Daniel, and Owen to Shema, Metro

D.C. Synod’s afternoon for upper elementary school students. The theme – Everything is AWESOME!! – helped participants learn important faith lessons through The LEGO
