Hello and Welcome to the Christmas edition of The Badge. Remember this newsletter needs your input, so don’t be shy, let us know what you are doing and if it’s “printable” I shall endeavour to publish. The S of PE are now on Facebook, more details to follow. Our own RAF PTI Association Website is doing very nicely and visits from all over the world, all The Badge newsletters are also on the Website. I have added an interesting RAFA fund raising article called Calendar Girls, let’s hope a few of you will purchase one of the Calendars. “Who is the oldest member of the RAF PTI Association?” Charles Purcill asks “Is it me?” He was born 86 years ago on the 12th December the 12th 1928. PTI Course was No. 10 in September 1947.

Festival of Remembrance Royal Albert Hall

Our very own standard bearer Roy Rigg was given the honour of parading the new British Legion Standard at the Remembrance Festival, Royal Albert Hall Saturday 8th November. This was indeed a great honour and I am sure that you will all join with me in congratulating Roy.

What do old PTIs do? They get on their bikes and go:- Malcom Lee

Well, that is exactly what 'Toy Boy' aka Keith Dickinson and I did. We decided that we would try to 'live the dream' for as long possible before we descended too far into the 'Death Zone'. So, between climbing and ski tours we planned to complete a series of long adventure bike rides. To achieve this we felt we needed to seek expert advice on diet and finance.

Somewhere in Texas….

The legendary Kelsey Tainsh was our first port of call. His expertise on all matters relating to dress, food and training is mythical within the contingent of old PTIs. Unfortunately, his physical appearance has changed slightly since his sleek Combined Services water polo playing days. Apropos finance, we discussed our needs with Alan Lane. He was the richest, smoothest PTI we knew, and only wore 'Homme’ briefs. His GOLD AMERICAN EXPRESS was always our last resort. Unfortunately, he declined to accompany us with his new platinum card or sanction a payday loan.

Kelsey: Fitness Coach & Dietician

Our first attempt at long distance cycling was to ride from Land’s End to John O'Groats. My memories of that trip were of a very sore

derrière and ‘Toy Boy’ devouring anything that came to hand. We then felt we were ready for a longer ride and decided to cycle across America. As usual planning wasn't the most comprehensive.... what's the point when one is going on an adventure? So the rough outline was to start in San Diego, progress to El Centro, have a Corona beer and chilli in the Owl Bar (the infamous PJI den of ill repute) and then head East.

Owl Bar - El Centro California Ginge Lee - Arctic Dip

After 4 weeks cycling through the Southern States, being stopped by the border patrols in Texas, sleeping in strange places and evading 'Brokeback Mountain’ Cowboys with big guns wanting to show us how they shot snakes....'some that slide on their bellies and others on 2 legs', we arrived in Jacksonville on the East Coast.

Since then we have cycled from Vancouver to Mexico along the 'Big Sur' on Highway 1, paying particular attention to all forms of beach life. Running short of money we tried to sell 'Toy Boy', with little success; he must be past his sell by date. On arrival at the Mexican border we were advised not to cross because drug cartels were active in the area. The scenery was magnificent, food cheap and the people friendly.

Subsequently, we have cycled from the South of Norway to Nordkapp, the furthest most Northerly point in Europe. A swim above the Arctic Circle proved there are still Brass Monkeys, although ‘Toy Boy’ was impressive. He managed at least 10 strokes in his M&S underpants, unfortunately I only managed 2 and had to retire with a suspected case of mumps! This year we cycled through Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

If we manage to outpace the Grim Reaper for a few more years and secure the ongoing services of Mr Tainsh who is developing a new super calorific pastry diet, we hope to follow the dream.

Journey’s End?

Carpe Diem!

What a great photograph posted on Facebook by our Chairman Clive Martland of the RAF Novice boxing Team that took on the Staffordshire Police boxing team in 1989. The team was made up of a UT PTI course, their instructors and other RAF novice team boxers. As far as I remember Dennis Murphy, himself a very useful boxer and I trained and coached the team and I was also a referee on the night.

The WAAF Watchtower 'promo' picture features Sgt Khym France, a PTI at RAF Brize Norton. She is wearing a genuine wartime WAAF uniform that RAF Museum London leant to us (they let us borrow 7 uniforms in total, which was incredibly generous of them). She is climbing up a watchtower to work the air raid siren at Ashdown WW2 camp in Evesham.

The chorus girls is inspired by the Adventures of Maisie where Ann Sothern played a chorus girl in the 1940s film series. We have tried to make the calendar as authentic as possible on a shoe string budget. We have loved every minute of the last two years and are so happy with the end result. We wanted to create a calendar that captured the strength and resilience of the women and children during WW2, and I think we have succeeded. Now we just need people to help us raise money for the RAF Association by buying a calendar (or two...). Web and FB details are below.

Calendar Girls meet Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew PulfordSome of the RAFA Calendar Girls were able to meet Sir Andrew Pulford, Chief of the Air Staff and Lady Nicola Pulford. The team showed Sir Andrew and Lady Pulford the completed calendar and discussed the work that that had gone into the initial fundraising and some of the photo shoots. Both Sir Andrew and Lady Pulford were impressed by the teams efforts to date and wished them luck with the project

The Inaugural edition of the monthly Human Performance Update

Welcome. This aims to provide the latest information from the dept, in an easily digestible format, for PEd staffs across the RAF. We hope this will help keep you informed on a wide variety of topics that directly affect your business.

Promotions News. We are well aware that the STO, PTI, ATI, ERI and PJI  jungle drums are very finely tuned and that news of your peers, regardless of sub-specialisation, travels faster than Mark Cavendish down the Champs Elysee however, the Human Performance Department would still like to share with you news of achievements of individuals from across all of these areas.  The news that we can share will be very dependent upon YOU providing us

HQ 22 Trg Gp Human Performance Staff ‘Who’s Who’. See Page 2 for a short description of the roles across the different ‘staff desks’ at Air Cmd to help direct you to the right individual to help you. You will notice we are carrying a few gaps but most of these are due to be filled by end of Jan 15. We will be welcoming back Sqn Ldr Steve Parlor (previously a PEdO), he has spent the past 10 years working with the RAF Sports Board.

Tweet, Tweet… We have started a Twitter account (@RAFHumanPerfom), we are currently following over 70 organisations/individuals across military and civilian sports/fitness/health sectors and will use this outlet to share relevant, unclassified information. Why not join in and start following us.

with news of what is being achieved out there, so please e-mail Flt Lt Rachael Lee with anything that you feel should be shouted from the proverbial rooftops.  We would welcome news of sporting achievements, commendations, honours and awards etc, etc.  One area that we will have knowledge of before the rest of you is promotions (although it sometimes feels like this is not the case!) Obviously there have been many promotions since the last newsletter was sent from this HQ (a few years ago now) and we send our congratulations to every one of those people, however to draw a line in the sand we have included details of those individuals who have accepted an offer of promotion to take post with effect from 1 Oct 14 onwards – details on following page.

Sharing Best Practice. Over the last year Sqn Ldr Charlie Petersen has conducted Staff Advisory Visit at 20 PEd Flts. A main aim for this is to promote best practice. This is added to the Best Practice area our Intranet site.  If you have any documents or ideas that you believe your colleagues would benefit from mirroring, please pass them to Sqn Ldr Petersen.

HALTON RECRUIT TRAINING STAFF RAISE MONEY FOR ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Recruit Training Squadron (RTS) staff at RAF Halton recently took part in a gruelling challenge, with the aim of raising money for The Royal British Legion, in order to mark the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War.

The event took place at the Finlay Gym at RAF Halton, and was a 48 hour non-stop treadmill challenge, aiming to cover a total of 296 miles, the distance from RAF Halton to Dunkirk and back, as the crow flies. No Phase 1 or 2 lessons were cancelled or re-arranged, meaning the participating RTS staff had to carry out all of their normal day to day duties, alongside the gruelling event.

Dunkirk was chosen as the destination to remember those who lost their lives in Dunkirk from 27 May to 3 June 1940, but also to remember the success of ‘Operation Dynamo’, a tri-service operation launched to evacuate troops from Dunkirk. After initial assessments it was estimated only around 45,000 men would be evacuated, however the spirit of the British Forces in the face of adversity shone through and eventually 338,000 were rescued.

Twenty four RTS staff as well as Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns completed shifts on the treadmill ranging from half an hour, to two hours, with some individuals completing numerous

shifts, totalling a staggering three hours. WO Antony Martin observing the Station CdrPhysical Training Instructor, Corporal Ryan Hepworth who came up with the idea said: “I wanted to contribute to the remembrance commemorations so chose the Royal British Legion over the wealth of other charities out there.”

The Royal British Legion charity provides financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, the families and dependents. Best known for the Annual Poppy Appeal it is also campaigns to promote the welfare and interests of current and former members of the Armed Forces.

The event started at noon on Wednesday 12th November, finishing at noon on Friday 14th November. Fellow Physical Training Instructor, Corporal Craig Lenane said “The night shifts were particularly tough. Sleeping in the gym, getting up for an hour shift on the treadmill in the middle of the night, and then teaching three or four times the following day was a challenge.”

The pace RTS staff managed to maintain on the treadmill wavered throughout the event, with lack of sleep and fatigue playing a part towards the end. However the staff managed to maintain the target pace, and even increased towards the end, ultimately covering a total of 321.87 miles, while raising over £240 for The Royal British Legion. Squadron Leader Jake McLoughlin – Obituary Daily Telegraph 10th Nov 2014

Squadron Leader Jake McLoughlin was an RAF parachutist who tested ejector seats and set records for free-fall.

Squadron Leader Jake McLoughlin, who has died aged 83, was one of the RAF’s most experienced and fearless parachutists whose courage and competence led to pioneering work in various parachuting roles. He also carried out tests of an ejection seat for combat aircraft. On one occasion, flying as a dispatcher in a

Fairchild C119 transport aircraft he saw that a soldier’s static-line had become entangled with the man’s battle-equipment as he leapt out. This would certainly have been fatal had McLoughlin, in a lightning reaction, not managed to seize him in the split second after his jump.

Page 11: For ex and serving RAF PTI’s, PJI’s ... - file · Web viewThe Badge Newsletter No 9 2014. For ex and serving RAF PTI’s, PJI’s ATI’s & ERI’s. RAF PTI Association Motto

With prodigious strength, McLoughlin held the man in the slipstream of the aircraft with one hand while clinging to the inside of the fuselage, until others in the aircraft were able to haul them both back inside. Not long afterwards, McLoughlin volunteered for the first two live ejections in flight of a new ejection seat designed for the very small cockpit of the Folland Gnat ultra-light fighter, which could not be fitted with the conventional Martin Baker seat. For these acts of great courage, he was awarded the British Empire Medal.James Edward McLoughlin, known throughout his life as Jake, was born on January 26 1931 to an Irish farming family in County Leix, Eire. He was educated at the Maryborough County Technical School. He left home when he was 17 and travelled to England where he reported to an Army recruiting office in Liverpool. Finding it closed, he went next door to the RAF office where he enlisted as an electrician.Wanting a more active life, he became a physical training instructor (PTI) and soon volunteered to be a parachute jumping instructor — an elite body of PTIs who conduct all parachute training for the armed forces. He took up free-fall parachuting as a hobby and was one of the original RAF “Big Six” free-fall parachute team, the precursor to the RAF’s famous “Falcons” Parachute Display Team.As a Falcon he represented Great Britain in the World Parachute-jumping Championships in Czechoslovakia, Ireland and the USA. He also set a number of world records for free-fall parachuting, and made 1,213 parachute jumps from 39 types of aircraft. After service in the Far East, where he was an instructor at the RAF Jungle Survival School, he was commissioned into the RAF Regiment in 1967. He served in Cyprus with a Light Anti-Aircraft (LAA) Squadron before returning to the RAF Regiment depot at Catterick.

McLoughlin received rapid promotion, which was rare in the regiment, especially for a former NCO. He was given command of No 58 LAA Squadron equipped with Bofors 40mm Anti-Aircraft Units. Within weeks of taking command in April 1976, No 58 was deployed to Belize. The small country had been under constant threat of invasion by Guatemala since 1970 and depended for its survival upon British forces based there. McLoughlin’s squadron was positioned to defend the only airfield with its single runway, which was crucial for the support of the garrison and therefore a key target for any possible offensive by Guatemala. The political situation deteriorated significantly in the spring of 1977 and reinforcements, including a force of RAF Harrier ground attack aircraft, were deployed to bolster the British military capability and to act as a deterrent.Three RAF Regiment squadrons maintained a three-monthly rotation from the UK in the inhospitable terrain. During McLoughlin’s time in command of No 58, the squadron made nine deployments to Belize and one to Northern Ireland.Successive commanders in Belize praised his leadership and his unit’s excellent discipline and morale. For his services in Belize he was appointed MBE.During his time in Belize, McLoughlin was dismayed to see that there was no memorial there for the nine crew and passengers of an RAF Wessex helicopter which had crashed in the jungle. Accordingly, he commissioned a

plaque commemorating the dead, to be made from the beautiful ziricote wood for which Belize is well known. The memorial was duly mounted in the Garrison Church and dedicated in a special service.During his time as a jungle-survival instructor in Malaya, McLoughlin had accumulated considerable expertise on dangerous snakes, scorpions and spiders. His interest in Central American species drew the attention of the University of Texas, which had a faculty specialising in Latin American animal toxins. They asked him to support their research into antivenom for treating victims, which he readily did by studying snakes, noting their habits, habitats and behaviour as well as collecting live and dead specimens.McLoughlin also designed his squadron’s badge, depicting a Central American black widow spider. Possessing very potent venom, the spider represented the squadron, its prey being hostile aircraft. After retiring from the RAF in 1984, McLoughlin served for four years with the Sultan of Oman’s forces, commanding the Omani Parachute Training School. On his final return to the UK, the Sultan invested him with the Omani Order of the Royal Emblem. He became the editor of the Royal Air Force Staff College’s journal, The Hawk, to which he made a distinct and much-praised contribution in the realms of style and content.Jake McLoughlin’s wife Betty, whom he married in 1960, predeceased him in 2009. A stepdaughter also predeceased him, and he is survived by two sons.

2014 Challenge Inter-Ecoles De Parachutisme (C.I.E.P)

The Airborne spirit of 7 Parachute Jumping Instructors (PJIs) from ADW was put to the test in July when they travelled to Germany to compete with other PJIs from across NATO for supremacy in the prestigious CIEP competition. The teams competed in a range of arduous events, all based on the skills required by Military Airborne Forces; Orienteering, shooting, accuracy parachuting (freefall & static line), and swimming in uniform. The UK were up against teams from Germany, France, Poland, Lithuania, Spain, Estonia and Belgium.

The UK haven’t competed in the Challenge for 7 years and we had to be realistic about our strengths and weaknesses. The challenge that faced us was massive; none of us had ever been orienteering, we had never fired the German weapon (G36) and we had never jumped an accuracy parachute which is vastly different to

12

Page 13: For ex and serving RAF PTI’s, PJI’s ... - file · Web viewThe Badge Newsletter No 9 2014. For ex and serving RAF PTI’s, PJI’s ATI’s & ERI’s. RAF PTI Association Motto

any other form of parachuting. And so for 6 months we ‘beasted’ ourselves through regular training sessions fitted in and around the busy work tempo of ADW. We attended an orienteering course, we had a shooting lesson from UKSF personnel and very slowly, we got to grips with the new parachutes. The training culminated in a week long ‘boot-camp’ in Cyprus. Throughout our training we were sponsored and supported by Air Bus.

On the 18th of July, we made the long drive to southern Germany for the competition. The Orienteering course turned out to be tougher than we had anticipated. Supposedly 6km long, the markers were spread out over the steepest forestry terrain we had ever seen and the event turned into a 2 hr+ hill rep session.

The following morning we headed to the local swimming pool. We had trained hard in the pool and we saw this as our best event. We were in first position right up until the last 10 metres where I pretty much drowned. Somehow, I survived and we clung on to the silver medal.

We all performed well in the shooting, hitting targets from up to 200m away in the pouring rain.

Being accurate on a round parachute is all about luck and jumping out at the right point. Unfortunately the tricky winds caught us out and we lost a few points. At least we didn’t land on and around the vehicles like some teams who were lucky to avoid serious injuries.

Everything was still to play for down to the last event, freefall parachuting. All the hard work paid off and we put in our best ever team jump. Aiming for a 2 cm target, all 5 members landed with an accumulative distance of 80 cm earning a silver medal.

Unfortunately for us, the Polish team came 3rd, narrowly beating us to the bronze medal overall.

Winning two silver medals and coming 4th overall was a great result for us and justified all the hard training. Working relationships with our European counterparts were re-established and we all benefitted from this great experience. Team UK look forward to building on our experience and going to Poland next year stronger than ever!

instructors and the Centre became the Joint School for Adventurous Training Instructors (JSATI) in 1985 with the arrival of the Army (RAPTC). The Centre’s Mission is: “To train and assess all nominated Physical Training Instructors and Physical Education Officers from the 3 Services in the technical skills of Adventurous Training (AT) activities and all other relevant aspects of Adventurous Personal Development Training (APDT)”.

The primary purpose of RAF AT is to help prepare all Service personnel (regardless of their rank, branch or trade) to meet the challenges of contemporary Operations and warfare through real life experiences. Warfare demands of its people the qualities of robustness, resilience, endurance, empowerment, competency and self-sufficiency in the field. Furthermore, the Service requires its personnel to have Leadership, Teamwork and Inter-personal skills of the highest order. AT provides a medium for Service personnel to hone these skills in an environment directly comparable with the Operational environment. In addition, AT plays a direct role in forging and reinforcing the RAF's Ethos, Core Values and Standards as demanded within AP1.

RAF ATIs are critical in the delivery of the Generic Education and Training Requirement to RAF personnel in all stages of Formal Trg, and particularly in support of the RAF Force Development (FD)/AT Strategy. A measure of the importance of this training is the requirement that all RAF personnel are mandated to complete FD/AT every 3 years. RAF ATIs are at the very core of this mechanism, shouldering responsibility for the delivery of the RAF Centralised FD/AT Scheme and for administering, managing and advising on all Stn and Unit FD and AT related matters. RAF ATIs, regardless of rank, are responsible for the management of high-risk activities and for ensuring that all layers of the authorisation process are informed and protected.

On completion of the 10 month ATI course, these instructors are qualified in delivering Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Canoeing, High Ropes Trg, Mountain Biking and are equipped with a host of the foundation skills in Winter Mountaineering, Ice-Climbing, Ski Touring and Mountain First-Aid.
