TheFacultyofElectronics,TelecommunicationsandInformatics(ETI)educatesabo-ut3,500students in fourfieldsofstudies: Informatics,Electronics&Telecommu-nications,ControlEngineering&Robotics,andBiomedicalEngineering.WearethelargestfacultyinNorthernPolandintheareaofmoderntelecommunicationsandinformationtechnologies,employingnearly200researchersandlecturers,whichin-cludesover40ProfessorsandDoctorsofScience.Formanyyearswehaveretainedahighscientificstanding,documentedbythecategory “A”accordingtotheMini-stryofScienceandHigherEducation’sclassificationsystem,andbybeingentitledto confer aDSc degree in three disciplines: Electronics, Telecommunications andInformaticsaswellasaPhDdegreeinthedisciplinesofAutomatics&RoboticsandCybernetics&BiomedicalEngineering.

TheFacultyhasanextensive researchanddidactic infrastructureat itsdisposal.Recently, a new (and the Faculty’s second) building wasmade available, servingprimarilydidacticpurposes– ithouses laboratories, lectureandauditoriumhallscomprisingatotalofabout1550seats,aswellasastudent-friendlyFacultyoffice.There isalsotheTri-CityAcademicComputerCentre, calledby itsPolishacronym“TASK”,withoneofthefastestsupercomputersinEurope,aswellasastate-of-the--art library and reading room. There aremany extensively equipped research anddidacticlaboratories.Twoanechoicchambersareusedforacousticresearchandan-tennameasurements.AoneofthefewinPolandearthsatellitestationforresearchisinstalledontheroofofBuildingAofETI.AmodernlaboratoryofindustrialrobotsfundedfromEuropeanfundswasopenedin2012. Justrecently, inDecember2014theImmersive3DVisualizationLabwasopened.Thisuniquelaboratoryisdesignedtodevelopinterdisciplinaryresearchonvirtualreality.Twodidacticlabshasbeencertifiedbyleadingglobalcompanies:MicrosoftandCadence.

GraduatesoftheFacultyhaveestablishedsuccessfulworld-wideknowncompanies.Justtwoprominentexamplesare:YoungDigitalPlanet,whichisaworldleaderinthefieldofdigitaleducationalcontent,andIVOSoftware(nowownedbyAmazon),whoareinventorsoftheinternationalaward-winningspeechsynthesizer“Ivona”.AlargenumberoftheFaculty’sgraduateshavebeenverysuccessfulabroad.ThemostprominentexampleisProf.TomaszImieliński,co-founderofdatamining,theworl-d’smostcitedPolishcomputerscientist.

TheFacultyofElectronics,TelecommunicationsandInformaticsatGdańskUniver-sityofTechnologyisamodernacademiccentreharmoniouslycombiningadvancedresearch and attractive education with active cooperation in the industrial envi-ronment.Withintheframeworkofthe latter,theFaculty initiatedtheformationofthePomeranianICTCluster,whichintegratesoverahundredbusinesspartnersfrommanyfieldsofinformation,electronicsandtelecommunicationstechnologies,aswellasseveraleducationalinstitutionsandlocalgovernmentorganizations.

TheinventionsdevelopedinourFacultyarewidelyknownandrecognized.Amongthem,therearecomputertoolsforhearing,speechandsightscreeningtests,aswellasarangeofdedicatedspecializedinterfacesenablingparalyzedandhandicappedpeopletousecomputers.Animportantgrouparetheinventionsthatsupportthe-rapy inthecaseofcommonconditions,suchasspeech impairmentorcirculatorydisorders. Other inventions of great practical importance are: a passive acousticradar,aseriesofmobileimpedanceanalyzersforthediagnosticsofanti-corrosioncoatings,auniquemobileexpertsystemformeasuringthemotionofgaseouspol-lutantsintheatmosphericair,anoisemonitoringsystem,asystemfordetectingtraceamountsofhazardoussubstances,asystemofsmartLEDlamps,oranovelmethodofsynthesisofdiamondsuspensions.Inthisbookletyouwillfindshortde-scriptionsofsomeoftheinventionsmentionedabove,aswellassomenewestones,developedjustrecently.

TheFacultyofElectronics,TelecommunicationsandInformatics,ispleasedtobeamodernandfast-developingscientificanddidacticunitofsuchamoderntechnicalinstitutionasGdańskUniversityofTechnology.Weinviteyoutoanykindofbenigncooperation tomeet thegreat challenge - theharmoniousanddynamicdevelop-mentofthe21stcenturySociety.

Active Dynamic Thermography for quantitative skin burn diagnostics

Purpose

Theconceptofusingthermalexcitationandmeasurementofthermal responses isknown asNonDestructive Thermal Testing (NDTT). ActiveDynamic Thermography(ADT)allowsnon-destructivetestingofbulky,multi-structure,foilorcompositema-terialsusingexternalheatexcitationandvisualisationoftheinfraredresponse,sho-wingthesurfacetemperaturedistributionandthermaltransients.Ourinvestigationsaredirectedmainlytowardsmedicalapplicationsanddevelopmentofnewmethodsofdiagnostics,e.g.:non-contactevaluationofthedegreeofskinburndamage;evalu-ationoftreatmentprocedures;evaluationofintra-operationproceduresincardiosur-geryetc.TheaimoftheworkwastofindtherelationshipbetweenfiguresofmeritinstaticthermographyΔT(differenceofmeanvaluesoftheburnwoundandofnot-af-fectedskinareatemperatures)andinADT(thermaltimeconstantsparametricimages-tau)forburnclassificationmostsuitableforchoosingtreatment.Statisticalanalysisdidshowahighcorrelationbetweenparameters:thermaltimeconstants,ΔT,thehi-stopathologyestimationandtheburnwoundclassificationintohealedandunhealedduringthreeweeks.ThestudyresultsrevealedthequantitativecriterionstauandΔT forburnclassificationallowingaproperchoiceofburnwoundtreatment.

Purpose

TheAEGIRsystemisdesignedtobeanindependentradiolocationsystem,thatwillallowyoutodetermine locators’positionswithoutusinganysatellitenavigationsystems(likeGPSorGLONASSsystems).

Description

IntheAEGIRsystemallgroundreferencestationsoperateinanasynchronousway,soeachoneusesalocaloscillatortotransmitlocalizationmessages.Theycanalsoreceivesignalsfromneighboringstations.Basedonthereceivedsignals,areferencestationdeterminesthetimedifferencebetweentheneighboringreferencestationsand itsownrhythmofwork.Themeasurementresultsareregularlyplaced inthelocalizationmessage.Thelocatorreceiverisresponsibleforthesynchronizationpro-cess.Onthebasisofitsownmeasurementsandmeasurementsfromthereferencestation,itestimatesitslocation.ComparedtoexistingsolutionslikeLoran-C(LongRangeNavigation–C),theAEGIRsystemresignsfromachainrelationshipbetwe-enreferencestations.Intheproposedsystem,therearenosupervisioncentersfor

maintenance,whichreducesoperatingcostsandincreases system reliability. The AEGIR systemwillbefullyfunctionalifthelocatorwillreceivesignalsfromatleastthreereferencestations(2Dcase) or four reference stations (3D case). Theprinciple of the system is under patent protec-tioninthiscountryandintheEuropeanUnion.

Inaddition, the systemhas theadvantage thatintheprocessofestimatingtheposition,coordi-natesaredetermineddirectly,withouttheneedtoassignthemtotheso-calledpositioninglinesthatareneededinphaseradiolocationsystems.Therefore, there is no need to input a startingpositionandcounttheexcesspositionlinesthatarerepeatedonaregularbasisintheareaofthesystem, and that can lead to errors in determi-ning the correct latitude and longitude.

Purpose

Thedevelopedimagesensorwithvisionprocessorsisintegratedonasinglechiptocreateaso-calledvisionchip.Suchkindsofchipsfindmanyapplications in robo-tics,biomedicalimplants,roadtrafficcontrolsystems,andnavigationsystems.Themain functionof thevisionchips is toperformnumerically-intensiveearlyvisionprocessingalgorithms,includingsmoothing,edgedetection,noisereduction,shar-pening,etc.Thelow-poweroperationofsuchchipsisofgreatimportanceformanyautonomoussystemspoweredfrombatteriesorsmallsolarcells.

Description

Anewapproachtoananalogultra-lowpowermedium-resolutionvisionchipdesignhasbeeninvented.Theprototypechipperformslow-levelimageprocessingalgori-thmsinreal-time.Onlyaphoto-diode,MOSswitchesandtwocapacitorsareusedtocreateananalogprocessingelement(APE)thatisabletorealizeanyconvolutionalgorithmbasedonafull3x3kernel.Theproof-of-conceptcircuitwasfabricatedin0.35µmCMOStechnology,andcontainsa64x64singleinstructionmultipledata(SIMD)matrixwith embeddedAPEs. Theprototypehasbeen functionally testedandmeasured.Theperformedtestsshowthatthevisionchipcanbeusedforco-nvolutionimagefilteringThematrixdissipateslessthan0.3mW(lessthan0.1µWperAPE)ofpowerunder3.3Vsupply,anditsimageprocessingspeedisupto100frames/s.

Purpose

Purpose:Itisestimatedthatabout2%ofchildrenhaveunderminedlateralizationofthebra-in.Theproposedsolutionisbasedontheassumptionthatlateralizationofsight/hearingcouldbefocusedbythestimulationofthosesensesinanappropriateway.Featuresofthesystemwillallowforthecorrectionof,andconsistentdevelopmentof,children;especiallyinthecaseofchildrenwithvariousimpairments(especiallycross-dominanceordyslexia).

Description

Themain idea is toperformparallel stimulationof the sight andhearing sensesusingdigitalsignalprocessingtechniques.Modificationof visualandhearingsti-muliisperformedinordertofocusperceptionofthosesensesbytheappropriatehemisphere(bymeansofthelateralizationprofile).Senseofhearingisstimulatedusingthetimescalemodification(TSM)ofspeechcombinedwithamplitudemodi-ficationof speechusedduring the training.Thesight is stimulatedbydisplayingthetextofthespokenelements.Textismodifiedduringthetraining,i.e.partofthetextthatiscurrentlyheardintheheadphonesismarkedusingvarioustechniques(e.g.zooming,colouring,etc.). Intheextendedversionofthesystem,parametersassociatedwithvisionandhearingmodificationalgorithmsmightbecontrolledbyagazetracker.

Automatic video event detection software

Purpose

This product is the prototype of a video processing and event detection solution designedtobeappliedinmulti-camerasurveillancesystems.Itdetectsmovingob-jectsinfixedcamerastreams,tracksthem,classifiesthem,anddetectsuser-definedevents including intrusionandwrong-directionmovement, aswell as specializedevents,suchasabandonedluggage,eventsoccurringinaparkinglot(parkingtimeandplaceidentification,enteringandleavingaparkinglot,etc.),andtrafficevents(prohibitedlanechange,stoppinginthemiddleofanintersection,etc.).Alleventsareinstantaneouslyreportedtothesystemoperator.

ThesystemcanoperateonanyWindowsorLinuxOSPCswithdigital IPcamerasattached.Thesystemishighlydistributedandscalable,thereforemultipleserversmaybe employed to theprocessingof streams froma largenumber of cameras.Resultsofvideoanalysisaretransmittedtodedicatedenduserterminalsbywiredlinks,WiFi,orGPRS,includingPCsandSmartphones.

Dipping sonars for detection and tracking submarines

Purpose

Thedippingsonarsforhelicoptersarenewsystemsdesignedfordetectionandtrac-kingofsubmarinesinbothactiveandpassivemodes,equippedwithanadditionalgradientpassivearrayandameterofspeedvelocitydistributioninwater.Theyarefully operational on Polish Navy anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters andships,meaningthattheymeetthetoughrequirementsofthehighesttechnologyreadinesslevel(TRL9).

Thesystem’saimistolocalizeactiveRFIDtagsindoors,inamoreeffectivewaythantraditionalsystems.Localizationmethodscanusedifferentenvironmentalfeatu-res(signals)andtheirproperties:differentcharacteristicsassociatedwiththepro-pagationofradiosignals(RSS,ToF,DoA,etc.),datarecordedfromsensorsonatag(infrared, compass, accelerometers, ultrasound, etc.), images recordedby a videocameras(computervision).TheHybridLocalizationSystemreliesonmeasurementsof various signals fromtheenvironmentanddifferent signalproperties,usesad-vancedalgorithmsfordataprocessing,sodifferentcomponentsofthesystemcanmutuallyremovetheirweakpointsandimprovetheoverallaccuracywhilstsimulta-neously keeping infrastructure costs low.

Immersive 3D Visualization Lab

Purpose

Immersive3DVisualizationLabensuresthehighestpossibledegreeoffeelingim-mersion,owingtounrestrictedfreedomofmovementandstereoscopic3Dprojec-tion,combinedwiththeleastamountofequipmentwornbyuserstoprovidethemwiththemaximumcomfortandimpressionofnaturalactivity.Itcanbeappliedin,amongothers:• militaryandhomelandsecuritytrainingandoperationsplanning(forthesocalledcyber-warriors),• industrialinspection,trainingandexaminationofcomplexstructures,• virtualprototypingofvehiclesandmachines,• scientificandarchitecturalvisualization,• virtualtourism,exhibitionsandmuseums,education,• measuringtheimpactoftheenvironmentonhumanbehavior,• psychologicaltreatmentofvariousmentaldisordersandphobias,• virtualsurgeryandvisualizationofothermedicalprocedures,• entertainment(e.g.computergames).

Description

Implementationofamechanismofmovementwitho-ut changing location is carried out using a transpa-rent sphere of 3.05m in diameter, freely rotating onthe supporting rollers. The user is placed in the sphe-re througha specialhatchopened fromoutside.Therotary transparent sphere with the user is located in thecenterofthecubicCAVEwithedgesofabout3.4meach.TheCAVEconsistsofsixacrylicflatscreens(four

walls,floorandceiling).ToallowaccesstotheCAVE,oneofthesescreensisanau-tomaticslidingdoor.TherotarysphereisremovablefromtheCAVE.Thisallowsfortestingothermodelsof locomotioninterfaces. It isalsopossibletousetheCAVEinthetypicalway,withoutanywalksimulationdevice,onlywithsomehandheldcontroller(flystickorwand).Inaddition,theremovedrotarysphere,enrichedwithavirtualhelmet,cansimultaneouslyallowforindependentsimulationorfordistri-butedsimultaneoussimulationofbothdevices(thesphereandCAVE).Thelabprovidesauniquefacilityfordevelopingandtestinginteractionscenarios,notyetexploredinEurope.

Purpose

Mainpurposeofthepresenteddesignare:providingdetailedinformationaboutthenoise threats that occur every day in city areas and the prevention of the noise indu-cedhearinglossespeciallyamongyoungpeople.AnexperimentalsystemdesignedforthecontinuousmonitoringoftheacousticclimateofurbanareaswasdevelopedandimplementedwithinthePLGridPlusproject.Theassessmentofenvironmentalthreats isperformedbasedononlinedata,acquiredthroughagridofengineeredmonitoring stations and selected psychoacoustical properties of the human he-aringsystem.

Dynamic maps of noise threats, including auditory effects which are caused byexposuretonoise,arecreatedandupdatedonthebasisofdataobtainedfromadistributedsensorsnetworkintegratedwiththePL-Gridsupercomputerinfrastruc-ture.Operationsareperformedemployingadedicatednoisepredictionmodel,opti-mizedtowardsworkingonacomputercluster.Inaddition,predictedmapsmaybeadjustedusingrealnoiselevelmeasurements.Thisapproachallowsforgeneratingmoreprecisemaps,butalsoforverifyingmathematicalsourcemodels,utilizedintheprocess.Theworkpresentedresultedinservicesrunningonasupercomputergrid,ensuringcrediblenoisedistributionresultsinlargeareas,displayedondigitalmaps,thatcanbedynamicallyupdated.

The activity is concentrated on long-term research and technological innovationinperceptualandsuper-perceptual (e.g.heart rate,temperature)computing. It isanemergingtechnologythatisalsofocusedonthecreationofmobile,perceptualmedia.Perceptualmediareferstomultimediadeviceswithaddedperceptualuserinterfacecapabilities.Thesedevicesintegratehuman-likeperceptualawarenessoftheenvironment,with theability to respondappropriately. WeatherSense is a techno-logy platform that genera-tesandprovideshigh-reso-lution weather prediction data including various weather parameters suchas temperature, humidity,wind, precipitation andothers. The WeatherSense Webportal is also integrated with mobile applicationsdesigned to serve operatio-nal weather predictions to distributed users.
