WALTAIR TIMES

Monsoon is always welcome after the scorching summer heat. The showers, the cool weather, the greenery around are always a thing we wait for. But with children we have to be extra cautious. Pain, illness and suffering can be avoided by taking few precautions! Excerpts from the exclusive interview with Dr. Gana Mohan.

What are the common complaints seen in children in this rainy season? Cough, cold, throat pain and nasal block. 95% of these cases are viral infections. These complaints can be handled by following simple remedies like giving paracetomol/tylenol for high temperatures, body pains and headache, giving adequate rest and giving right intake to the child. Parents should have patience to wait for atleast three days and observe if the child’s symptoms are on downtrend. However if the child is sick-looking and has disproportionate weakness, then consulting a doctor is a must.Use of antibiotics can be avoided in most of the cases.

What are the serious diseases that could affect children in the rainy season? Dengue, typhoid, malaria and tummy flu are prevalent in this season.

Dengue is caused by mosquito bites especially during day time. Children must be protected from mosquito bites in day time also. In cases of dengue, parents must be vigilant to observe if the child is active, pass normal urine and consume reasonable amounts of food and liquids. But incase of significant symptoms like extreme weakness, low urination and excessive sleep the child has to be immediately taken to the doctor. The doctor will try to assess and maintain the input output balance of fluids.

Another fever frequently observed is viral fever usually asociated with cough, cold and/or vomitting diarrhea. Any fevers and cold and cough are generally due to viral infection. Even after 3 days if the symptoms don’t subside, antibiotics might be prescribed by the doctor.

Tummy flu can be due to infection in small intestine called diarrhea resulting in large volumes of motion or infection in large intestine called dysentery resulting in small volume of motion with blood and/or mucus. 90% of these cases can be handled using ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts). Along with ORS, Children can be given soups made of sago, arrow root powder or mashed potato and rice. Usually milk can be given. However fruits, juices, sweets and sugar need to be totally avoided.

Typhoid is mainly spread through contaminated water and food. Eating food which is hygienically prepared and drinking boiled or purified water can prevent typhoid. Awareness needs to spread among people to ensure that proper sanitation techniques are followed. Vaccination against typhoid can be given to children.

Usual symptoms of malaria like fever, chills and rigours may not be present in children. Fever without any other symptoms can be suspected for malaria or urinary infection.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Enough measures need to be taken to eliminate stagnant water.

Dos and Donts

Ensure that you wash your hands including nails. Home cooked food is always preferred as it is safe. Even if one eats outside food, always ensure

that it is clean and hot. Fruits need to be washed properly. Avoid going to dusty areas. Children need to use masks for protection

against dust and respiratory infections. Parents must make sure that school authorities

take measures to keep classrooms mosquito-free and specially watch out for mosquitoes under benches because dengue is mainly caused by day time mosquito bites.

How to develop immunity among children

Avoiding antibiotics in most cases will improve immunity.

Giving proper balanced diet. Formulating a family exercise plan where fitness

is made a part of life. Dr. Gana MohanMD (ped), DCH, MRCP (Ped, London) Fellowship in Neonatalogy (USA, Australia )

1883 Bar Renovation : 1883 Bar has been renovated with new bar counter, lighting and upholstery. Central air conditioning has been replaced with new unit. The bar was opened on June 13, 2016 by senior member and past President Mr.N.S Rambabu and President Mr. DV Raju. There was a good gathering of members with Ballantines providing drinks to all members and subsequently attractive offers were made available to members.

Family Night @ Lawns : The First Edition of Family Night at Lawns has received a very good response which has encouraged us to organise a repeat. The Second Edition of Family Night at The Lawns

was organised on June 11. This time the menu was extensive and for cocktails, celebrity Cocktail Mixer Mr. Asmani from Bangalore had prepared some very exotic cocktails exclusively for the members. For ladies and children we had premium mocktails at a very nominal pricing. A special and innovative menu was created. And to bring in the evening a student band performed live and a small dance floor for children was organised. The response was overwhelming with over 300 members having attended.

Single Malt Tasting Session : This year has been a year of firsts. We earlier had Mr. Jamie Walker from Johnnie Walker family, Scotland who conducted a Johnnie Walker Night, then Mr.Alexander Williams from Ballantines, Scotland conducted a tasting session of Ballantines finest Whiskies and for the first time ever we had a tasting session for Single Malt Whisky at the Club. A tasting session was organised for LAPHROAIG, a speciality Isle Single Malt established in the year 1815. After the initial tasting, special promotion was made available to all members and the event needless to say was a spirited one. The event was held on June 26th the last weekend that the out going committee stepepd out. The signature event with The Best Peat Whisky and live music by the band KAIROZ lifted the spirits of the members throughout the evening.

WALTAIR TIMES

Our world today is so interconnected, powered by computers held in our hand (smart phones), it is literally astounding as to what we can do with our devices. Two decades ago, if any one did what we can do today, we would have described the person as having magical powers from God.

Yes we have learnt a lot and keep doing it. Somewhere along the line the difference between learning and habits of rote is getting blurred. We need to keep our focus on gaining and sharing our knowledge instead of becoming slaves to the technology. Consider this:

A teacher friend, complained that one of her students has been missing school for a couple of months, which might entail a repetition of the class due to shortage of attendance. I knew the student in question who was traumatized by a recent kidnapping attempt, so maybe he underwent professional counselling or maybe the family had taken him on an extended vacation. Thus I offered to find out from the child’s mother the reason for his continued absence from school. I reached the boys home and found him playing very happily with his pet puppy. The young boy seemed relaxed and didn’t seem to be undergoing any kind of trauma. Perplexed, I asked him how he was doing. With a huge smile

he said he was getting a lot of time to play with his puppy. Very gently I asked him if he missed school and all his friends at school. The happy smile was instantly replaced by a sad droopy lips and he bobbed his head in affirmation. Apprehensive, I then asked him why he was not going to school. The droop deepened and his eyes filled with tears. In a voice quavering with emotion he said ‘ Nobody is letting me go to school. Every day I leave home for school, some days I even reach the school gate, but before I can enter, someone known to my parents pick me up and take me back home.

Turned out that the day the child was kidnapped, the parents put out a message on all their WhatsApp groups asking for help in tracing their son’s whereabouts. Every group has these conscientious members who take everything that is posted on the group very seriously and think it is their moral obligation to forward messages they receive to other groups they are members of, and educate or enlighten them with the new found information.

As a result of such a chain for forwards and repeat forwards, people who knew this boy were under the impression that the boy had been kidnapped and needed to be returned to his parents even months after he was actually safe and sound with his family.

Although the above incident is a slightly exaggerated version of what may have happened, it is nevertheless a true representation of what is happening. Technology meant to facilitate communication between people has now become an addiction of sorts.

Although the essence of effective communication is to convey essential information only to the people who need to process it to result in action in resolving a given situation, indiscriminate forwards only end up in making a huge information pile up that usually ends up confusing , distracting and annoying a lot of people, or totally ignored in the deluge.

I am sure all of us have been at the receiving end of messages or greetings that have been copied, pasted and forwarded to us which kept everyone wondering why we received that message and why there are two senders - the original sender and the person who forwarded without editing it.

Just like people feel the need to diet or optimize their diet, use of technology should be mixed with judicious judgement by the user.

The sad paradox is that messages that really can make a difference are very rarely shared, and even if they are, seem to have no effect in the implementation. Subtle threats of bad luck affecting the reader if he/she does not forward the picture of a highly unlikely natural formation of a God or religious symbol to 13 others or breaking the cycle of forwards seem to have more action implementation, than a request for blood or cleaning the neighbourhood campaign.

I have personally decided to undertake a digital detox and limit my use of WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other such applications unless I have something positive to contribute to the people I am addressing with my comments or posts.
