1. PURPOSE OF THIS HANDBOOK The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint all parents and students with the Jane Addams Band program. It is

important that all parent and students read this handbook carefully, because in order to continue our band

program’s tradition of excellence, parents, band members and the band director all must direct their efforts

toward creating a positive experience for all students. A positive experience must start with an understanding of

the expectations and standards for those who participate in the band. This Band Handbook outlines and explains

these expectations.

2. BAND PROGRAM OVERVIEW • The band has a unique place in the school curriculum. While it is an academic class that has a definite curriculum

and expected goals to reach, there are some aspects of band membership that require participation outside of the

normal school day. Students and parents must understand that the success of the band activities depends

on EACH and EVERY band member being in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment,

the right attitude and the willingness to work!

In our band program, students will:

• Use a variety of music from classical to popular literature to develop fundamental instrumental skills related to

posture, breathing, embouchure, fingerings, rhythm, tempo, articulation, phrasing, pitch, tone production,

dynamics, balance, and blend.

• Develop overall music literacy skills related to note and rest values, key signatures, scales, musical signs, terms

and symbols.

• Be given the opportunity to develop musical sensitivity through performance of music and listening to music.

• Be able to exhibit proper concert etiquette and be able to evaluate the quality of a musical performance as an

informed, aware and actively involved listener during various live performances throughout their lifetimes.

• Develop self discipline, responsibility, leadership skills, hand/eye coordination, organizational skills,

concentration, creativity, self-expression, cooperation, a life-long love of music and recognition of its importance

in helping to enrich the human experience.

• Be a member of a community within the larger school community. This gives students a place to “hang their hat”

and belong, which is beneficial for good mental health and happiness.

• Be given the opportunity to grow musically, socially, and academically through participation in band.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Jane Addams Middle School Band Program is to provide a positive atmosphere in which

students can learn to succeed at playing a musical instrument as individuals and as a group. The band program is

dedicated to teaching students the necessary skills to play their chosen instrument proficiently, to be able to

appreciate the performances of other musicians and artists, and to enrich the students’ overall education and

quality of life.

The band program seeks to prepare students for success in all of the various performances and competitions

throughout the entire school year, as well as prepare students for success in the Bolingbrook High School Band

Program and any other musical experiences and performances beyond high school.

Description of Ensembles The Beginning Band is made up of first year instrumental players. This class is designed for ANY 6th, 7th or 8th

grade student who would like to begin learning how to play a musical instrument. Students do not need any

previous musical experience to participate in Beginning Band. Ideally, these students learn the basics of their

instruments in the Summer Beginning Band Program, which takes place for a few weeks before the school year

starts. Emphasis is placed on the development of fundamental skills related to posture, breathing, embouchure,

fingerings, counting, music reading, and quality tone production. During the school year, they rehearse every

other day, for one block class period on an alternating “A” and “B” day schedule, and are required to perform at

the Winter and Spring Concerts and school assemblies. Students in Beginning Band are expected to participate in

the district’s annual Solo and Ensemble Contest. Each student’s performance in this class determines if he/she

will be placed into Concert or Symphonic Band for the next year.

The Concert Band is made up of students who have successfully completed the Beginning Band program and

first lesson book. Students at this level work to further their musical skills, knowledge of music theory and

performance abilities. Concert Band members perform in the Marching Band, Winter and Spring Concerts, Band

Festivals, and school assemblies. Students in Concert Band are expected to participate in the district’s annual

Solo and Ensemble Contest. Students in this band rehearse every other day, for one block class period on an

alternating “A” and “B” day schedule.

The Symphonic Band is the “top” ensemble at Jane Addams. Eligibility for the Symphonic Band is determined

by each student's performance in the previous year's band class, and is based upon the student’s musical reading

and performance abilities, work ethic, positive behavior, and a positive attitude in the previous year in the band

program. Members of this ensemble work on the refinement of their musical skills, knowledge of music theory

and performance abilities.

This ensemble uses specific instrumentation that produces a balanced band sound. Students in this band are

expected to maintain a high level of instrumental performance. Symphonic Band members perform in the

Marching Band, Winter and Spring Concerts, Band Festivals, I.G.S.M.A. Contest, Elementary School Tour, and

school assemblies. Students in Symphonic Band SHOULD participate in the district’s annual Solo and Ensemble

Contest. This band rehearses together every other day, for one block class period on an alternating “A” and “B”

day schedule.

The Marching Band is made up of students who have completed the Beginning Band Program and are going to

be in Concert or Symphonic Band in the fall. This ensemble represents Jane Addams Middle School in

Page 3: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

Bolingbrook and the surrounding communities by being the most publicly visible ensemble in our band program.

They rehearse during Summer Marching Band to prepare for parade performances at the beginning of the school

year. All students are expected to participate in Marching Band unless they are excused on a case-by-case basis.

The Jazz Band is made up of volunteer students who play their regular band instrument, OR electric guitar, bass

guitar, piano and drum set. This group rehearses from 7:30-8:10 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the

school year, beginning at the end of September. The Jazz Band performs at the Winter and Spring Concerts.

3. AT-HOME PRACTICING • An instrument should NEVER spend the night in the band room.

• Playing a musical instrument well is an acquired skill; therefore, developing quality practice habits is essential.

With quality practicing habits, band will be a more enjoyable and gratifying experience for your child.

• Parental support and guidance are key factors in establishing a regular DAILY practice schedule to ensure the

attainment of your child's goals in band.

Some ways that you can help your child include:

• Decide with your child the best time for practicing.... then make sure they stick to it daily!

• Decide with your child the best place for practicing. This place should be quiet and free from distractions.

• Make sure your child has a sturdy chair and his/her folding music stand in the practice area. Using these two

items will help promote good posture and instrument holding position, which are both essential for playing an

instrument well.

• Provide your child with a metronome (for all instruments) to help keep the steady beat and a tuner (woodwinds

and brass only) to improve pitch.

• Provide your child with private lessons. They are a great motivator for practicing.

• Provide your child with books of "fun" music to practice in addition to his/her band music and private lesson

music. You can get them at any music store. They're like the "dessert" at the end of a practice session!

• Monitor your child's practicing and give positive reinforcement. Let him/her know that you enjoy listening and

you are proud of his/her improvement.

• Have patience with your child as they learn this new skill. Everyone learns at a different pace and the key is to be

able to enjoy the journey!

The Plain and Simple Truths About Band… The more a student practices, the better they will sound…

The better a student sounds, the more they enjoy (and want to stay in) band…

The more a student enjoys band, the more they will practice…

4. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Contribute to your musical education by making positive use of your talents.

• Improve your knowledge and understanding of music through active performing, listening, and creating.

• Develop a practice routine that includes the use of the following musical concepts: pitch, intonation, tone color,

technical facility, rhythmic accuracy, and musicality.

• Be encouraged to participate and perform in volunteer performances, prepare a solo for contest or recital

performance, and/or take private lessons if financially possible.

• Attend all performances.

• Make a real effort to learn and make daily improvements in your playing.

• Work to understand and appreciate the importance of everyone’s contribution to the success of each ensemble.

• Follow all classroom rules and school regulations as specified in the student handbook.

Page 4: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

5. BAND PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Support your child’s efforts and show an interest in their music study.

• Provide an instrument and necessary accessories for your child and keep everything in good repair.

• Make expectations for your child. Just as he/she must be reminded to "wash your hands" or "brush your teeth" so

must they be reminded that "this is your practice time."

• Help your child realize that frustration is part of learning and to “stick it out when the going gets tough”.

• Never make fun of the strange sounds he/she may produce or banish him/her to the basement for practice.

• Put the band events on your home calendar and make sure that your child attends them! When even one student

is missing, it affects ALL of the band members.

• If you discover an unavoidable conflict with a performance, tell Mrs. Zabinski as soon as you can so that she

can try to make adjustments in the band to cover your child’s missing part.

• Assist in teaching your child to be prompt in attendance of all band events, return all forms, fees and fund raising

materials on time, and to maintain their uniform properly.

• Attend concerts and competitions as much as possible.

• Become actively involved: attend JABBA meetings, help chaperone band events, support fund-raising activities,

co-chair a project, inform the Band Booster officers of any special talents, contributions or suggestions you have

for the development of the band program.

• Please provide or arrange transportation for your child to and from band events that are outside of the school day.

Please pick up your child on time after each band event. After a band rehearsal or event, Mrs. Zabinski is not

allowed to leave until all students have been picked up, and she also has a family to get home to

• It's important that you stay aware of how your child is doing in band class. Parents should create their own

Edline account through the school's website and use it to check their child's progress.

• Parents are always invited and welcome to come in and observe their child’s band class!

6. BAND DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES • Work with the band members to continue to create an environment conducive to the development of musical

creation and expression, in which all students learn to participate effectively.

• Choose music and plan daily rehearsals to encourage musical improvement and develop further understanding of

musical concepts.

• Clearly communicate all expectations and hold each student accountable for his or her performance and

behavior.

• Evaluate the progress of each student and ensemble in a positive, fair, and constructive manner.

• Actively listen and respond to all questions, concerns and suggestions voiced by students and parents.

7. JANE ADDAMS BAND BOOSTER ASSOCIATION (Abbreviated as “JABBA”)

This organization is the backbone of our band program. Without this group of generous parent volunteers, the

band program would not be able to thrive and grow. If you would like to volunteer your time to the Band

Boosters, please feel free to come to a meeting and join a committee!

JABBA will meet monthly during the school year at 7:00pm in the band room.

This year’s meetings will be on…1.) Wednesday, September 12 (Craft Fair Planning)

2.) Wednesday, October 3

3.) Wednesday, November 7

8. FUNDRAISING • Our bands participate in many special events that require funding beyond that which is provided by the Valley

View School District. These funds are essential for band transportation, awards, field trips, band room supplies,

sheet music, and much more.

• During the year, students and parents are asked to help raise these funds by participating in fundraising activities

that JABBA organizes and sponsors. All band students participate in the band fundraisers.

• There are usually only two band fundraisers per school year. If every student does their part in meeting the

modest goals set for each fundraiser, the band will be able to continue to operate and meet the expectations set

before them.

• Parents who do not wish for their child to participate in fundraising activities are encouraged to take the “Buy-

Out” option of making a $25 donation to JABBA in lieu of participating in that fundraiser. Any checks should

be made payable to “JABBA.”

9. BAND COSTS AND FEES • All students playing flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, or

percussion (snare drum and bell set) must either own their own instrument or rent one from a music store.

(Music & Arts Center, based in Itasca, is the company that our band program works with and suggests.)

• Any student playing French horn or baritone HAS THE OPTION to pay a $55 annual rental fee to "VVSD" to

have a second (school-owned) instrument at home to practice on.

• Any student playing tuba in the band will use two school-owned instruments (one tuba to use at school and one

to practice on at home), and therefore must pay a $110 annual rental fee to "VVSD" to use the instruments.

• All students must use a combination lock on their band lockers. They may be purchased in the main office for

$5.00 (Any checks must be made out to "VVSD"). Only locks purchased at school are allowed.

• All students must always have the proper accessories and maintenance supplies for their particular instrument.

Many of these supplies are available for purchase before or after school from Mrs. Zabinski.

• Each Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Marching Band student must pay a $35 band uniform rental &

cleaning fee to "VVSD" at the beginning of the school year. These students must also purchase band uniform

shoes. Orders may be placed in June through the Band Boosters for the following school year. After the mass-

order cut-off date, parents must go to the Bandman’s store in Romeoville to purchase band shoes.

• All Concert Band and Symphonic Band percussionists must purchase a stick bag, general timpani mallets,

yarn mallets and xylophone mallets to use daily in class. These items can be purchased in a package from Music

& Arts Center for approximately $90. The students must also bring their snare drum sticks and bell mallets that

were used in Beginning Band.

• ALL percussion students are also charged $55 for use of school-owned percussion instruments. Percussionists

who have their own equipment at home must still pay the $55 fee for use of the school’s equipment. This money

is used for the extremely costly maintenance, repair and replacement of these instruments.

10. INSTRUMENTS

Instrument Storage and Security

• All students will be assigned a band locker in the band room. All band students are required to purchase a

combination lock from the front office for their band locker. Students should lock their instruments in the band

room locker during school hours. In accordance with school district policies, if a student does not use that lock

on the assigned band locker, neither Jane Addams Middle School nor Mrs. Zabinski will be held responsible for

any instruments or other personal articles that are lost, misplaced, or stolen.

• Instruments must be brought into the band room before the school day begins and locked in the assigned band

locker. Since students need to practice every night, all instruments should be picked up immediately after the

school day ends and be taken home. If a student is signed out early, he/she should still take the instrument home.

Page 6: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

6

Being signed out early does NOT excuse a child from practicing that night. Students may enter the band room at

any time to get their instrument – even if another class is going on.

• Music, binders and books should not be placed in an instrument case unless there is a designated place for it

inside of the case (like in some trumpet and clarinet cases) or unless there is a designated outside pocket on the

case for holding music. Storing music, binders and books inside of an instrument case will result in expensive

damage to the instrument.

• All instrument cases MUST have an identification tag on them at all times. (Even tape on the outside of the case

with a student’s name and phone number written on it in marker is fine.)

• Record the serial number of your child’s instrument for later identification. Parents are advised to have the

instrument included on their home-owner’s insurance policy to cover possible loss or theft.

Suggested Instrument Brands Most instrument manufacturers make “student” level and “professional” level instruments. Student Level

instruments are designed to be cost effective and durable. Professional Level instruments are designed to

produce the best tone and are of high quality and therefore more costly. It is recommended that beginners first

purchase/rent a “student” level instrument and begin looking into purchasing a “professional” level instrument

when entering high school.

This list is not exhaustive, but you are much more likely to do well if you choose from among these

manufacturers. As in purchasing a car, cheaper is not necessarily better and you may purchase a “lemon” of an

instrument that performs very poorly. If you have questions about a brand of instrument, please contact Mrs.

Zabinski before accidentally spending your money on a poor quality instrument that will probably soon break.

Instrument Maintenance and Repair Every student must have a working instrument in class every day. Students are taught how to keep their

instrument clean and in good working condition. Instruments are like cars – if they aren’t maintained properly,

they will break down! All valves, slides and keys should be clean and move freely. NEVER try to repair an

instrument yourself! (You need special tools and training to do it correctly!) Mrs. Zabinski can perform minor

repairs and adjustments to some instruments. If she cannot repair the instrument, she can send the instrument to

Music & Arts Center for you.

For instrument repair service, call Music & Arts Center at 1-800-323-1001 .

• When you call, you must SPECIFICALLY REQUEST that you get a loaner instrument while yours is being

repaired so that your child does not lose any playing time in class or lose grade points due to not having an

instrument in class.

• A Music & Arts Center representative visits Jane Addams once a week during the school year. - He will be able to deliver any supplies that you order over the phone.

- He can also take your instrument in for repair and bring it back to Jane Addams.

- They provide free estimates on repair costs.

School-Owned Wind Instruments • Some students will use school-owned instruments while they are a member of a Jane Addams Band. These

instruments are primarily larger, more expensive instruments that would be beyond the means of a typical

family’s purchasing ability.

• Students who are using school-owned instruments must pay an annual $55 rental fee to “VVSD.” This fee is

intended to help offset a small part of the normal repair and upkeep cost of these very expensive instruments.

This fee is non-refundable, even if a student quits band or moves out of the school district. Students who play

school owned instruments should take the same care as they would their own instrument. The student will be

held financially liable for any damage due to negligence or carelessness and for loss, but not for normal “wear

and tear.”

• The student should always inform Mrs. Zabinski of any repairs needed. All school-owned instruments must be

repaired by Music & Arts Center and sent in by Mrs. Zabinski. If it is found that a school-owned instrument is

not being properly maintained, that student may lose the privilege of using a school-owned instrument.

• If a student abandons an instrument that he/she owns in the band room after leaving the band program, every

effort will be made to contact the family so that they can take the instrument home. If after 3 months, the

instrument has not been picked up, it will be considered a donation and will be used by students in the band

program.

School-Owned Percussion Instruments • The school owns thousands of dollars worth of percussion equipment. Only percussion students may touch this

equipment. Percussion students are responsible for putting away all percussion equipment at the end of each

rehearsal. Any student found not caring for the equipment or found damaging equipment will have to pay for the

replacement of that equipment and may face disciplinary action for purposefully damaging school property.

Specific Instrument Supplies: All students must have the proper supplies every day in class: Flute: Cleaning rod, cotton handkerchief for cleaning.

Oboe : At least 2 working “med. soft” reeds, silk cleaning swab, cork grease.

Clarinet: At least 3 working reeds, reed guard, cork grease, handkerchief cleaning swab, ligature.

Saxophone : At least 3 working reeds, reed guard, cork grease, handkerchief cleaning swab, body swab, neck strap,

ligature.

Trumpet: Valve oil, tuning slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush.

French Horn: Rotary oil, tuning slide grease, mouthpiece brush,

Trombone: Slide oil, tuning slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush.

Baritone: Valve oil, slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake brush.

11. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS During all classes, rehearsals and performances, both in school and in away from school, all rules and regulations

found in the Jane Addams Middle School Student - Parent Handbook are applicable. In addition, there are rules

and procedures specific to band students, which must be adhered to:

Band Room Rules: 1. Always behave in a professional manner in the Band room.

2. Be polite, courteous and respectful to EVERYONE at ALL times.

3. Eating, drinking or chewing of anything (except water) is not allowed in the band room.

4. Horseplay or fooling around is not allowed in the band room.

5. Do not interfere with the teacher’s ability to teach or a student’s ability to learn.

6. Follow directions the first time they are given.

7. Only band students are allowed to be in the band room.

8. No one is allowed in the band office, storage room or practice rooms without Mrs. Zabinski’s permission.

9. Always use a combination lock on your band locker.

10. Never leave an instrument unattended. Always keep one hand on it.

11. Never touch or play on any instrument or equipment that isn’t yours. (Any student found to be handling another student’s property will be dealt with in accordance with the school

handbook. Taking or hiding another person’s instrument is not a joke. It is theft and will be dealt with as such.)

12. Misuse or abuse of any school-owned equipment (stands, chairs, instruments, etc.) will not be tolerated.

13. Help to keep the Band Room CLEAN by throwing away any trash that you see, even if it isn’t yours.

Band Rehearsal Etiquette: 1. Always have a pencil, all of your music/your book, binder, accessories and a working instrument in class.

2. Take only your instrument (in the case), and binder (with pencil in it) to your chair. All other materials stay

in your band locker.

3. Be seated in your assigned chair and ready to play by 4 minutes after the bell.

4. Check the board and put your music in order.

5. When the director steps onto the podium, be quiet and focus on the director.

6. Play your instrument only when the director allows you to play.

7. When the director stops conducting, stop playing and listen.

8. Do not talk during rehearsal. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized.

9. Put your materials away in the proper place when rehearsal is over. (Five minutes before the bell)

10. Leave the area around your chair cleaner than when you arrived.

11. Wait until the director dismisses you at the bell.

Discipline Procedure If a student is misbehaving and disrupting band class, the student will be given a verbal warning. If the student

chooses not to improve his/her behavior in that class period, he/she will be removed from rehearsal for the

remainder of the class period and the student’s parents will be contacted. If a student is removed from rehearsal

multiple times, a conference between the band director and the student’s parents will be scheduled. At the

conference, the future of the student‘s band participation will be discussed. If a student’s behavior is extremely

inappropriate in class, at any performance, or on any kind of band-related trip or event, the student may be

removed from the band program.

* Severe behavioral problems will result in an immediate dean’s office referral.

Behavior at Performances Once a concert begins, students are expected to be silent. The utmost respect is expected while other groups are

performing. Students who talk or misbehave in any way at a performance will be warned once. If they continue

to misbehave, they will be directed to sit with their parents in the audience for the remainder of the concert.

Band Trip / Field Trip Behavior

Since band members are on display at public performances, each student must always remember that his/her

actions and words represent the entire Band program as well as Jane Addams Middle School. During any field

trips, "away" performances, or band trips:

1. All school rules, band program rules, and bus safety rules apply.

2. Students may only ride their assigned bus and must stay in their assigned seat.

3. Buses will not leave a location until every student is accounted for.

4. Follow all instructions from chaperones and bus driver. They are an extension of Mrs. Zabinski.

Exclusion from Band-Related Events or Trips • Going with the band to an event or trip is a privilege. Students who demonstrate that they choose not to follow

rules may not be allowed to participate in future band events or trips.

• Any student receiving a dean’s office consequence as a result of fighting or other aggressive behavior, or for

consuming or distributing illegal substances such as drugs or alcohol MAY FORFEIT the opportunity to

participate in future band events or trips for the remainder of the school year.

• The decision to exclude a student is at the discretion of Mrs. Zabinski and school administration.

Jane Addams Band’s Public Image Mrs. Zabinski and the school administration expect that the Jane Addams Band will continue to strengthen its

reputation for being one of the best middle school bands in Illinois. It is very important to maintain this positive

image at all times. Many times, our band will be in performance situations with other bands and organizations. It

is important to be respectful to other performing ensembles and treat them with dignity. Mrs. Zabinski expects all

of our students to refrain from making negative or derogatory statements or gestures to those groups. As

representatives of our school and the village of Bolingbrook, we understand that we only get one chance to make

a positive first impression.

12. Grading Policy Band is a performance-based class, so grading will come primarily from individual performance tests,

participation in class, and group performances.

10% = Formative Assessments (Daily Participation Points)

90% = Summative Assessments (Playing Tests, Written Quizzes & Assignments, Performances)

Overall Grading Scale The band program follows the Valley View School District grading scale:

90% - 100% = A

80% - 89% = B

70% - 79% = C

60% - 69% = D

59% or below = F

Daily Participation Points (10% of total grade) • Students earn 10 participation points per day in band.

• Deductions will be taken from a student’s participation grade for the following: Not having a piece of sheet music when we rehearse it ...................... Student loses 5 points for the day.

Needing a replacement piece of sheet music ...................................... Student loses 5 points for the day.

Not having a working instrument/binder/band book in class ............ Student loses all 10 points for the day.

Page 10: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

10

"Not Able to Play in Class Today" Policy • If a student does not have the required materials to play in class (working instrument, binder, band book), he/she

will be required to completely fill out a "Rehearsal Observation Form" during class to earn that day's 10

participation points. (The student may not do other work during that class period.)

• If the instrument is in the repair shop, a parent/guardian MUST secure a loaner instrument or points will be lost

for every day the student doesn't have an instrument in class. If the student does not have a loaner instrument that

day, they will have to fill out a “Rehearsal Observation Form.”

• If a student is too sick to play in class, but not too sick to stay home, that student will have to fill out a "Rehearsal

Observation Form."

• A student may only fill out a Rehearsal Observation Form to get the 10 daily participation points for a maximum

of THREE TIMES in a semester. Starting on the FOURTH time a student doesn't have the required materials to

participate in class appropriately, he/she will earn zero participation points for that day.

• Students may exceed this “three times” limit with a doctor’s note.

Playing Test Grade (part of 90% of total grade) • All band students will take a playing test every 3 weeks during their band class. (Total of 6 tests in a semester)

• Test materials will come from the student’s band book, sheet music, exercise packets, or scale sheet.

• If a student is absent for a playing test, they will take the test upon returning to school (without penalty).

• Students may retake a playing test at any time in the 3 weeks after the test was originally given. This may be

done in the last few minutes of the band class period, or at a before or after school appointment with Mrs.

Zabinski

Page 11: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

11

F = Unacceptable (0 - 59 points) - Very few or no notes and rhythms performed correctly. - Tone quality is not clear and is not controlled properly at all. Tone is scratchy, airy, not supported. - No steady beat is present . Erratic beat and rhythms detract significantly from performance. - Notes are not played for their proper length. - Demonstrates trouble performing skills and technique, lack of coordination, and no evidence of practice. - Unaware of expression, dynamics, phrasing, and musicality. * Refusing to play the playing test will result in a grade of zero.

Written Quiz and Assignment Grade (part of 90% of total grade) • Students will complete written quizzes while waiting for their turn to take their playing test.

• Other various written assignments will be given throughout each semester to all band students to assess their

knowledge and skills.

• Students may make corrections to a written assignment or quiz (ONCE) and turn them in (to earn the lost points

back) at any time in the 3 weeks after the quiz or assignment was originally given.

Performance Grade (part of 90% of total grade) • Band is a performing art, so concerts (and parades) are performance evaluations of classroom material and are

the "final exams" of concepts studied during the time leading up to the performance. When they are missed,

students do not get to experience the results of their hard work. Performances are unique and cannot be “made

up.” When even one person is missing, it significantly effects the ensemble.

• Each required performance is worth 100 points.

• 50 points can be earned for the following aspects of the performance:

• Being on time (10 points)

• Wearing uniform properly (20 points)

(Wearing uniform jacket/pants, black socks, uniform shoes, hair pulled back out of face.)

• Displaying proper concert etiquette (20 points)

(Not talking or using technology during another band’s performance.)

• 50 points can be earned by evaluating their own concert performance via the “Concert Self-Evaluation”

form the day after the concert.

• Students are expected to attend all required performances in their entirety, and performance dates are

published very early in the year to assist you in scheduling personal events.

• If a student is absent from school on the day of a performance, then, according to school policy, the student

cannot participate in the performance that evening.

• If a student misses a required performance, FOR ANY REASON, they will earn 0 out of 100 points for that

performance. The missed points may be made up in the following way:

• 50 points can be earned by submitting a video recording (to Mrs. Zabinski, within one week of the

concert) of themselves playing all of their concert music.

• Student does not need to wear the band uniform in the video.

• In order for the video to be accepted, the student must play all pieces from the performance in

their entirety, including resting for the appropriate amount of time, playing correct notes and

rhythms with good tone, good breath support, proper articulations and dynamics, proper

posture, etc.

• 50 points can be earned by evaluating their own performance on the video via the “Concert Self-

Evaluation” form within one week after the concert.

End-of-the-Year Grade If a band student earns a grade of “F” in Band at the end of the school year, Mrs. Zabinski will require a parent

conference to discuss the student’s future participation in the band program.

13. Hall Pass and Tardy Policies Band Hall Pass Policy

• Each student must sign out on the hall pass clipboard and carry the clipboard with them in order to leave the

room during a band class.

• Each student may use a hall pass up to 5 times in a semester.

Band Room Tardy Policy • In the band room, students will follow the school-wide tardy policy. See the school handbook for details.

14. Concert Clothing and Band Uniforms • Beginning Band Concert Clothing

GIRLS must provide and wear:

White dressy blouse or sweater, black dress pants or black dressy skirt, black socks or nylons, black dress shoes.

* NO gym shoes, jeans, sweatshirts or t-shirts allowed! Show pride in your performance!

BOYS must provide and wear:

White button-down shirt (tie is optional, but encouraged) or white polo shirt, black dress pants, black

socks and black dress shoes.

* NO gym shoes, jeans, sweatshirts or t-shirts allowed! Show pride in your performance!

• Symphonic, Concert, and Marching Band Uniforms Each student must rent the following uniform parts from the School District: - Band uniform jacket - Hat (Marching Band only) - Band uniform pants - Uniform Bag

The Following Uniform Parts Must be Provided (Purchased) by Each Student:

- White t-shirt to wear under the uniform

- Shorts to wear under the uniform (Athletic shorts are best for comfort. Make sure they don’t bunch up.)

- BLACK socks (The tall “crew length” ones - NOT the short ones that just come up to the top of the shoe.)

- BLACK Band uniform shoes

*All students must wear the proper uniform shoes. The Jane Addams Band Boosters coordinate a mass-

purchase of the shoes at the end of each school year. If you do not order them by the cut-off date, then you will

have to go to the Bandmans Company in Romeoville to get the shoes. They are open Monday - Friday from

9–5pm and are located at: 1304 Enterprise Drive Romeoville, IL 60446 Phone: (800) 323-3770

How to Wear a Band Uniform Correctly

The following is a list of regulations on how to be properly dressed when wearing a Jane Addams Band uniform.

Anyone who does not meet the uniform regulations as outlined below will be considered “out of uniform” and

will not be allowed to perform until the uniform problem is corrected. If the problem is not corrected, the student

will not be allowed to perform, and the absence will result in the consequences listed in the Band Attendance

Policy. The decision of the band director is final. Students - Keep in mind that you are not making a fashion

statement while wearing your uniform. You are showing that you are a member of a unique and

honorable musical organization.

• When in formal uniform in public, students must remain completely in uniform. That means that suspenders are

all the way on and the jacket is zipped and buttoned all the way closed.

• All students must wear deodorant while wearing the uniform.

• You must wear a plain white crew-necked t-shirt with short sleeves (NO tank tops/sleeveless shirts/undershirts)

underneath the uniform jacket. This helps absorb perspiration and prevents stains.)

• Students may only drink water or clear soda (Sierra Mist, Sprite or 7Up) while in uniform.

• Students may not eat anything while in uniform.

• Hair may not hang down and touch the collar. Hair must be put up in a braid, bun, pony tail, with bobby pins.

Please make sure all hair accessories are blue, white, black, or match the hair color.

Page 13: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

13

• Hats are only to be worn for outdoor performances (parades). When wearing the uniform hat, all hair must go

completely up inside the hat and secured with a hair elastic or bobby pins. This includes girls and boys.

• No jewelry may be worn except for small stud earrings.

• No makeup may be worn. If it gets on the uniform, it will stain it and you’ll have to pay for that piece.

• When in formal uniform, students must refrain from running or any other general “horse-play.”

• Do not wear pins, medals, or any other additional items on a band uniform.

Band Uniform Care Guidelines Once a uniform is assigned to a student, it becomes the responsibility of that student/family to take care of

the uniform, keep it maintained, and return all parts of it in the same condition as when they were assigned to the

student.

• Parents must re-attach buttons if they come off. Please make sure that thread matching the uniform color is used

at all times. If you do not sew, most dry-cleaners will make the repair for a reasonable fee.

• DO NOT CUT ANY FABRIC OFF OF THE UNIFORM.

• After a performance, air out the uniform before putting it back into the garment bag.

• DO NOT MACHINE- WASH, MACHINE DRY OR IRON THE UNIFORM YOURSELF.

• UNIFORMS THEY MUST BE PROFESSIONALLY DRY-CLEANED. We respectfully request that you have

them dry-cleaned once between the last Marching Band performance and the Winter Concert.

• If a uniform is not cared for properly, (or if any fabric is cut off of the uniform), the student will be

charged the appropriate fee to replace that uniform piece.

The uniform piece replacement costs are:

Jacket = $327.60 Hat = $77.95 Uniform Bag = $20.00

Pants = $137.05 Plume = $24.00 Hat Box = $16.95

15. Private Lessons A private lesson is one-on-one training by a professional musician who specializes in your child’s instrument.

The lessons take place once a week for 30 minutes. Private lessons may take place before school, during your

child’s band class, after school, in the evenings, or on a weekend, depending on your family’s schedule and the

private teacher’s schedule. Private lessons are in addition to the daily in-school band group classes. In private

lessons, each student learns at his/her own pace. The teacher has the time and focus to work on the

individual student’s strengths and weaknesses, because for those 30 minutes, the student is the ONLY

focus of the teacher.

• Students who are playing percussion in the Jane Addams Band Program are required to take private lessons

for the entire time that they are enrolled in a Jane Addams band.

• All other students are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to take private lessons.

• Students taking private lessons are REQUIRED to participate in the Solo and Ensemble Contest in February.

• A list of private lesson teachers is available in the bins in the band room and on the band website.

16. Jazz Band • Jazz Band is a co-curricular, volunteer activity. Students in Jazz Band do not earn a grade for participating,

but behavior and performance expectations are the same as those for any other band class.

• Jazz Band rehearsals take place on most Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30am-8:05am.

• Students are expected to be at school at 7:20am to set up.

• Students who arrive after 7:35am will not be allowed into the building for Jazz Band.

• Requiring regular attendance in Jazz Band promotes our school's emphasis on responsibility. Please see

the Jazz Band rehearsal schedule and put all rehearsal dates on your family's calendar.

• If a student misses a Jazz Band rehearsal and is in school that day, parent communication (via note, email or

voicemail) is needed to determine if it is an excused or unexcused absence. (Examples of an excused absence

Page 14: for the 2018 2019 School Year - VVSD

14

are a doctor's appointment or meeting with another teacher for help with schoolwork. Examples of an unexcused

absence are sleeping late, forgetting about a rehearsal, or just not wanting to attend.)

• If no parent communication is received, it will be considered an "unexcused" absence.

• If a child misses Jazz Band because he/she is absent from school that day, this is an automatically "excused"

absence. No note or communication from a parent is needed.

• If a student earns 3 "unexcused" absences from Jazz Band rehearsals, then that student will be dropped from Jazz

Band and may join again the following semester.

17. BRACES (For woodwind and brass players only) During middle school, many students need to get braces or have other

orthodontic work done. If your child is going to get braces, please be mindful of the timing involved in getting

them. For many instruments, braces worsen playing ability at first. This can be a very frustrating time for the

student. It can take several weeks for a student to get used to playing an instrument with braces, and for this

reason, we ask that you kindly consider not getting them put on (or taken off) in close proximity to major

performances. If your child does get braces, please be assured that once the initial period of adjustment has

passed, he/she will continue to enjoy the same level of success he/she had before braces.

*It is highly recommended that you purchase a product to protect your child’s cheeks from pain and injury due to

playing a wind instrument while wearing braces. Here are two that are recommended:

1.) The Morgan Bumper Order it at: www.morganbumper.com

2.) Jet-Tone Lip Protector Order it at: www.musicarts.com/Jet-Tone.mac

18. Summer Music Camps All band members are encouraged to attend a summer music camp. These camps are usually held on college or

university campuses and are fully staffed with excellent instructors and counselors to ensure a musically and

educationally productive experience. Information about these summer camps will be sent out via the parent email

newsletter and will be available on the band class websites.

19. Musical Repertoire Selection Selection of music for all rehearsals and performances is the responsibility of the director. Selections having a

patriotic, religious or holiday-orientated text or theme may be frequently chosen. Some of the most historic,

educational, and beautiful music ever written for performing ensembles incorporates these themes. These pieces

must be programmed in order for students to be thoroughly exposed to a full range of quality music. Though

these types of pieces are selected, they are in no way intended to persuade or dissuade a student from their own

personal or family beliefs. The director and the school administration understand that this may, at times, be in

conflict with the personal or religious beliefs of some students. In this case, it is requested that the students

and/or parents make the director aware of this information as soon as possible, and that the student is allowed to

participate in rehearsals and performances to the fullest extent possible without interfering with those beliefs.
