This book is dedicated to Dr. Joel Fort, M.D., whotirelessly and selflessly helped others with compassionand true concern. He believed in treating others withdignity and respect, especially the down and out. Hisservice to humanity was heart warming. Moreimportantly, he was committed to be honest withpeople, to honor the truth and not lie or cover up.He was an inspiration to me, as he was to many others.

-_1_-Paradise Lost

"Let your food be your medicine" Hippocrates

"Because lawlessness is increased, most people's lovewill grow cold. But the one who endures to the endwill be saved" Jesus Christ

This book is about health and wholeness, which should be our natural state of being.Something has gone wrong in most of our lives. We have lost our sense of well being, and wewant to find our way back to what we once had.But once undeniable symptoms emerge orsudden illness strikes, we start to get lost instruggling with the condition itself.

So, in this book I take a step back and look atwhat ails us in light of where we have fallenfrom. A person who is interested in the title ofthis book undoubtedly has some troublesomeissues. Such a person has most likely gotten

Page 10: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

10

involved in a struggle with symptoms and hasbecome fixated on finding symptom relief.

That goal becomes a pressure source, and soonresentment and frustration enter in, leading toan even greater need for symptom relief.

Thus, it is helpful to take a mental step backand get the big picture. Perhaps by looking atthe truths with a small "t" about their issues inthe Light of a greater Truth, the reader may seein that greater Truth what went wrong. Thesolution is inherent in the Light in which thelesser truths are seen. In fact, the Light itself isthe solution.

For example, it may be the truth with a small"t" that your shoe lace is untied. But aftersomeone points it out to you, the greater Truth isthat by seeing it, you realize the solution. Onceobserved in the light, no elaborate decisionmaking process is required. You simply see whatto do.

The truth with a small "t" may be that you eattoo much or eat the wrong food, but the greatertruth is seeing why. The even greater truth yet isthe very Light of Truth in which you see thesubtle error, and by seeing the error, you may letit go.

When it comes to life's deepest issues, if youreceive the truth about your error with the rightspirit and don't resent it, you are given thepower to change, which you never had before. The power to change is in the Light itself.

Page 11: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

11

In fact, just observing something objectivelyand unemotionally is already helpful. Theteenager who is not invited to the prom feelsdevastated, but the wise grandma knows that"this, too, shall pass." Grandma's calmnessconveys this unspoken message to hergranddaughter.

The Truth itself is positive, and the lessertroublesome truths are less threatening whenseen with the right attitude in the Light.

Taking a stale towel out of the hamper, yougo outside and hang it on the clothes line in thesunshine. In the warm light of the sun, the towelis soon fresh. The lesser truth was that the towelwas stale. The greater truth is the very light inwhich you see the lesser truth.

In this case, the solution is in the light itself. Afew hours in the bright warm sunshine and thetowel will be fresh and clean. It's like magic.

It is amazing just how effective the simpleapplication of awareness is to many issues whensomeone sees the light.

Sometimes we can improve the quality of ourlife tremendously just by seeing the need to bemore forgiving, letting go of some volunteeractivity that is draining us, asking a free loadingrelative to leave, or turning the mobile device offfor a few hours a day.

Most people snap out of their comfort zone(which is actually a mild undetectable trance)when they have a big wake up call--usually

Page 12: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

12

some tragedy that enters their life or a brushwith death.

Alas, unable to cope with what has befallenthem, many are only driven deeper intopsychosis.

But for those who wake up and see the needfor a new attitude and allegiance, it marks thebeginning of changes for the better. If they wereto persist all the way with a sincere desire toknow the truth, they might discover the secret tolife itself.

Unfortunately many people soon fall back intomere variations of what they did before.Perhaps they start drinking wine instead of beer, change their meds, or swap religions. Many livemore sensibly for a while, but sooner or later slipback into the same old practices that got them introuble in the first place.

How diligent the reader may be in his or hersearch for truth, I cannot predict. But what I cansay is: wouldn't it be better to wake up now andmake some positive changes rather than wait forthe big wake up call when it might be too late?

It has been said that an ounce of prevention isworth a pound of cure. This book is not just forsomeone suffering from a major illness orchronic condition. It may be read by anyoneinterested in conscious living, authenticity, andfinding the spiritual side of life.

Many of us, as adult children, have wonderedabout our parents and other adults we observedwhen we were kids. Particularly troubling to us

Page 13: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

13

is when they were decent people who lead aclean life, doing the best they could. They mayhave been hard working, church-going solidcitizens; and yet we saw them slowly or quicklydeteriorate, or we saw them suddenly strickenwith what would be a terminal condition.

If they were near to us, such as our parents orgrand parents, we may have watched them go toan endless series of tests and treatments. We sawthem go from one doctor to another, and soontheir medicine cabinet was full of pills andvitamins. We wondered what went wrong alongthe way, and frankly we have a fear that thesame thing might happen to us.

Most doctors and health care practitioners areconscientious people who really and truly wishto help people. I am grateful for their assistance, and I myself have benefited from their serviceson several occasions. Yet there is only so muchthey can do, particularly when called upon tohelp with a condition which is both complicatedand which has taken years or decades todevelop.

The mystery of why even good people arestricken with conditions like cancer and otherlife threatening situations is to be found onlyafter deep soul searching and a sincere cryingout for answers.

We are a fallen race, and each of us is bornwith a nature we inherited. We are gullible bynature and tend to follow what others say. Ittakes the utmost awareness and wisdom to

Page 14: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

14

avoid often extremely subtle errors. It also takescourage and faith in what we see for ourselves tosay "no" to what everyone else is doing.

The onset of the terminal condition is oftenpreceded by a series of errors, not always ourown, as well as complicated interactionsbetween factors.

The shocking truth about our collective fallencondition, as well as about the spiritual realitiesbehind our problems, are too much for mostpeople to want to face; yet in order to fullyrecover and be restored, we must face the truth.

The causes of the current condition must beseen in a series of realizations. First we see andunderstand the most recent errors and thenthose just before, like a series of layers of anonion, all the way back until we eventually seeour very first trauma in the resolving Light.

Sometimes we can buy a few extra years justby quitting smoking, losing a few pounds, andmaking changes in our lifestyle.

These temporary fixes give you more time, butdon't think you have arrived just because youshed some pounds, survived a close call, orstarted exercising and eating health foods.

Life is a school. Any extra time you are grantedshould be used to seek the purpose for yourexistence and in discovering what more youneed to know to transcend your fallen condition.

Garden

A recent news release revealed that chronicillness worldwide is costing us over 43 trilliondollars a year.

Why are chronic conditions and disabilitieslike diabetes, arthritis, asthma, sinusitis, autoimmune disorders, AIDS, andgastrointestinal disorders on the rise? Why areautism and Alzheimer’s disease skyrocketing? Why are so many people suffering from PTSD?And why are more and more people going onthe disability roles due to metal health issues?

We might also ask not only why are thesediseases affecting larger and larger percentagesof the population, but we must also ask whythese conditions are becoming chronic.

Page 16: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

16

As you can surmise, there are reasons atvarious levels having to do with what we eat, what is injected into us, and what we areexposed to in the environment. Then there arereasons that have to do with how we are treatedfor our infirmity – in that the treatments may beadministered with the assumption that thecondition will be chronic, and there is even thespecter that some treatments might contribute tochronicity or even cause it.

Environmental and iatrogenic factors are notwithin the purview of this book. I am acounselor and a metaphysician, and so I willfocus on spiritual and emotional factors thatmay be contributing to the increasing incidenceof chronicity in our ailments and conditions.

One thing is certain. Something is wrong. Weare missing the boat collectively and asindividuals. Moreover, as well-meaning as ourconcern, care, and treatments that we give eachother may be – they are not solving ourproblems.

In fact, I heard a rough estimate the other daythat soon one in two Americans will be obese, one in three will get cancer, and the latestestimate I have seen from the Center for DiseaseControl is that one in three Americans will havediabetes by 2050. And this is just the tip of theiceberg.

Since things are quickly getting so muchworse, it makes you wonder if all our care,

Page 17: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

17

concern and treatment are more palliative thananything else.

For the moment, let us set aside considerationof the palliative care and concern that we havegiven ourselves and to each other – the kind ofsupportive condolences, feel good messages andtreatments that are failing to halt our steepsocietal and individual health decline. Instead, let's look at unrecognized spiritual andemotional factors which may have preceded ourdecline.

Perhaps by looking at what came before thephysical decline so evident epidemiologically,we can determine what factors led to theconditions that fostered the terminal and chronicconditions.

In a previous book I discussed immunologyand psychoneuroimmunology. Another of mybooks focused on the restorative properties of acomplementary meditation, used as an adjunctto professional medical care and wise lifestyleand food practices.

In this book I will take a special look at cancerand the spiritual and emotional factors whichmay play prominently in its development.

I intend to discuss emotional factors in thedevelopment of heart issues in another book

It is well known that the alcoholic, the drugaddict and the gambler are in denial about theirbehaviors. In fact, the very negative practiceitself began as an effort to deny some otherreality.

Page 18: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

18

An angry, resentful, or bitter person who is indenial about his or her own wrong will turn toalcohol to take away the pain (for being wrong).Soon the very "remedy" itself becomes aproblem.

A person with financial problems due to awasteful or unproductive lifestyle might turn togambling (or the lottery) to try to find a quick fixto remove the evidence of their wrong.

However, bear in mind that there are a millionways to deny reality. Gambling, alcohol anddrugs are obvious, but our mechanisms of denialare far more subtle and ensconced in our verypsychology as well as our culturally acceptablelifestyles.

People make excuses to deny, avoid the issueto deny, or justify and rationalize to deny. Theyare usually unconscious about what they aredoing. People work to deny, do communityservice to deny and the most subtle of all, eat todeny.

Long before the terminal condition appears, the person was in denial about something he orshe did not want to face.

Even more subtle is denial through a lack ofawareness. When you accept something that isnot true, for example, because you trust in theperson who said it, you are in essence rejectingthe truth.

You may not have wanted to accept a lie, butthrough misplaced trust, and above all, a lack ofawareness, you failed to do a reality check or ask

Page 19: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

19

questions. You thereby unwittingly becomesubject to the effects of the lie.

There is no substitute for plain open eyedawareness.

Until you discover the food mystery, youremain subject to the incredibly subtle truthdenying properties of the very act of eating.

There is a connection between the simple act ofeating food and being lost in the imagination. There is then a connection between our loweredawareness and the subtle mistakes we make thatlead to illness and trouble. Even moreprofoundly, there is a connection between theeating of food and the kind of life we inherit –the life that leads to death.

The story of the Garden of Eden—ambition, disobedience, doubt, the eating the forbiddenfood, and the resulting curse upon the humanrace, descendents of Adam and Eve—is notmyth but fact. You can see the tragedy replayedin everyone's life, if you care to look.

That is why when we eat to celebrate our fallenexistence, we are denying the truth about theshame of our fallen race; and we are reinforcing, with every bite, the life that lead to death. Whenwe escape into our food, we are using it tomaintain the accursed hypnotic trance state inwhich the fallen race sleepwalks.

However, for those who search with all theirheart, God in His mercy has not only providedthe gift of awareness by which we may awakenfrom our trance; He also will then lead an aware,

Page 20: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

20

enlightened people out of captivity and intoParadise. Like the beautiful and apocryphalfairy tale of Sleeping Beauty who awaited thekiss of the prince, we await the kiss of the Princeof Peace.

Just as people use alcohol or marijuana todeny, many more use food to deny. Foodcomforts and ushers in daydream time. Foodseems to love us and so we indulge ourselves, but as we indulge we also reintroduce the stateof mind that is conducive to unconscious living.

People who munch away in front of thecomputer or television are living unconsciously. They are awake, of course, but they arehypnotically lost in the food or the televisionand oblivious to what is wrong with themselves, their lifestyle and in fact what may be wrongwith the very practice they are employing todeny reality.

In this book, I intend to part the veil andreveal the mystery of the food sin.

The truth always appears at first harsh andcold, just like the demanding teacher appearsmean. But those who become friends with thetruth find it has love in it, just as the studentwho goes on to excel in life always thanks thedemanding teacher for her tough love.

The unaware person, who does not want toface reality, will eat or drink to liveunconsciously. But as she eats to be unconscious, she is also, without realizing it, unconscious towhat might be in the food she is eating.

Page 21: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

21

In fact, a plain and simple carrot or a raw applemight tend to awaken her to her ownembarrassing eating habits.

It is the cultural food, fast food, wrong food, spicy food, drugs and alcohol that we put in ourmouth which help to usher in dream time.

I read where certain aborigines ingested orsmoked strange poisons to enter dream time andthen come face to face with an alternative realityjust on the other side of matter

It is the misuse of things that alters ourconsciousness and opens us up to an evildimension that is on the other side of matter.

The human consciousness can either live inGod’s light on this side of matter, or it canescape the Light and hide in the imagination.

The imagination is the no man’s land whereevil approaches us and can impress itself uponor cohabit with our consciousness.

Most of us spend most of our time lost inthinking, planning, scheming, dreaming anddaydreaming. There the unholy agency thatknows how to appeal to our pride, to our doubtsand fears, our secret desires, and resentmentsmakes its approach. We daydream of sex andviolence, of glory or revenge almostcontinuously. When we become ill, we dwellcontinuously on getting better.

I am not standing in your shoes, so I cannotoffer specific advice about your or your lovedone's issues, nor do I intend to. But I can offersome clues about the spiritual and emotional

Page 22: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

22

side of life, and extend my hand in friendship, not with platitudes and shallow reassurances, but with an intent to awaken.

I do suggest that partnering in awareness withyour intuition and conscience, what you know inyour heart, will add insight to whateverknowledge you have about your condition.

Awareness and insight are not at firstcomforting, so they are not what many peoplewant; but for those who do welcome the truth, they begin a marvelous journey of discovery.

If at some point during your reading, youdiscover something profound and meaningful, you might best put the book down at that pointand be quiet with your realization in the truthand its wonderful power to resolve issues.

I have a meditation that assists some people ingetting out of worry and negative emotionswhich tend to interfere with recovery. Themeditation also assists some people in re-findingtheir calm center of dignity and in makingcontact with the Light of understanding which isalso a wellspring of wisdom and love.

If you feel moved to begin the meditationavailable at the Center for Common SenseCounseling, then you might as well go aheadand give it a try. In fact, much of what you readhere will make more sense to you aftermeditating for awhile. A very nice short versionis available to try for free. On the other hand, you might opt to just read the book for whatinsights it may have.

- 3 -Food: Friend or Foe?

Uncovering Food’s Mysterious Powerover Us and Finding the Secret toRegeneration

Dr. Henry Bieler, a popular doctor whopracticed medicine for over fifty years and whotreated many Hollywood Stars, wrote a bookcalled Food Is Your Best Medicine. Of course, hewas talking about healthy food.

The other side of the coin is summed up in thewords of Waldo McBurney, still going to workevery day at age 106, who said, “We dig ourgraves with our forks.”

Food seems to be endowed with a mysteriouspower to make us better or worse, to upgrade orcoarsen our existence. It is the vehicle by which

Page 24: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

24

culture stakes its claim over us. Then, bycontinuing to eat our cultural food, we are kept apart of that culture, and thus without evenrealizing it, prevent ourselves from becomingwho we were really meant to be. It is for thisreason that the average person lives in anxietywith a vague sense that something is wrong.

A steady diet of junk food, fast food, diet soda, and processed foods seems to be contributing tomaking Americans overweight, undernourished, and unhealthy in many ways. Somehow, the fastfood fare is also contributing to a generalcoarsening of the population.

We are not as polite, as well mannered, or asnoble as we once were. Our society is becomingimpatient, selfish, harried, thoughtless and rudein countless ways.

Somehow, what we eat and the way we eataffect our way of living. Yet, though eatinghealthy food is good for you, it is not the totalanswer either. Health food cannot save you.

What then can we do? We must eat to live. Yeteating itself is somehow tied to our deteriorationand demise.

The very act of eating has to be looked at andunderstood, so that we might eat in such a wayas to eat with understanding and withawareness, and perhaps a dispensation fromGod, that will protect us from the curse of food.

Let us look at the food mystery and unpart theveil to the power that food has over us. If eatingwrong food contributes to sickness, ill health

Page 25: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

25

and a downgrading of manners, can eating theright food stop our downward slide? And evenmore importantly, might we then, withawareness and grace, discover God’s plan ofsalvation?

Food has a curse attached to it. It was in theGarden of Eden where the human race fell fromfaith and reliance on the Creator. Food wasinvolved in the fall. God had promised Adamthat if he ate the forbidden food, he wouldsurely die.

When Adam ate the forbidden fruit, it sealedthe deal and made God’s promise a reality.

Today we, the distant relatives of fallen Adamand Eve, must eat to live, but even as we eat, weare living under a death sentence. We try not tothink about it, and for much of our life, most ofus manage to sweep it under the rug. But as theyears pass, we must begin to confront its realitywhether we like it or not.

Eating good food (healthy, unprocessed, natural food from God’s garden) is likely to helpus live longer. But even so, all it can do isprolong the inevitable. Even the best of foodmay not help us if we eat pridefully or whileupset, angry, or in excess.

The best of food only helps us live longer. Itdoes not remove the curse. The situation appearsto be an insolvable dilemma. Because we musteat to live, we can’t just stop eating. Yet, foodwas involved in our fall and somehowcontributes to our deterioration.

Page 26: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

26

The evidence of food’s involvement in our fallcan be seen today, if we care to look. First of all, many people simply eat too much of the wrongkind of food. And their food indulgence leads toillness and contributes to an early demise.

Food is also very often involved in our ownpersonal misjudgments and errors. Many anaffair or act of promiscuity is preceded by ameal. The salesman, recruiter, or person who iswooing you knows the best time to make hispitch is after the meal he invited you to.Somehow the food weakens our resolve andopens us up to some suggestion we might haveresisted before the repast.

And don’t forget that marijuana, alcohol, anddrugs are types of food: something we ingest.Somehow the drug, the marijuana or the alcoholseparates us from awareness, from reason, fromcommon sense, and from control. Then we sayor do something we are sorry for later.

Medications are also substances to be ingested, and thus have the same trance producing effectthat food has. While medications are oftenhelpful, even life saving, they can also beaddictive, over prescribed, or cause side effects.

More importantly, we must be careful lest weplace all our trust in science and technology andpartake of medication in a trance of trust, withlowered awareness and faith in the hand of man.

Medicine, like food, can be helpful, butwhatever you do should be done with

Page 27: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

27

awareness because you also see that it is a wisecourse of action.

Could it be that these effects of food andfood-like substances are variations of the resultof eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden? Itcould be, and it is.

Food has a curse in it. Food has an effect onthe body. And food has an effect on theconsciousness. But there is more to it.

Food is fraught with suggestions. It’s not thechocolate that makes a Swiss person act Swiss; orthe hamburger and soda that make a teenageract like a teenager. The food is loaded withsuggestions, and when we eat the food, weunconsciously buy the suggestions. We begin toact like what the culture, through its varioustrappings, suggests we should act like. Then theeating of that food reinforces what we become inthe process.

Similarly, it’s not the baggy pants or the tattoothat makes a gang member into a gang member. It’s the suggestion and what those pants andtattoos mean. It’s the rebellious actions theyinspire. The manner of dress suggests a certainlifestyle and reinforces it. What we wear has aneffect on us.

We act a little better when we are dressed upfor church on Sunday. It is well known that kidsact a little better when they have schooluniforms. The clothing has a suggestion in it.

In the short run, this is good because it helpsthe suggestible people act better; but in the long

Page 28: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

28

run, we must learn to function from inwardtruth, not suggestions. And we must learn to eatto keep body and soul together without buyingthe food suggestions.

If there is a suggestion in the food or theclothes, then there must be a suggestionist. Mostof our authorities are passing on what wassuggested to them.

But somewhere back in time, there must havebeen an original suggestionist who began theworldly order based on a lie. He was there in theGarden, suggesting an alternate disobedientlifestyle which that he knew would give himpower.

Today’s ambitious, power hungry wanna be'srepeat to us the lies they were told and give usfalse versions of the real thing. They know, justas advertisers know, that trance inducingcultural food is one of the best ways to keep usasleep and malleable.

We are encouraged to a pride of life. It is nowonder that education is big business. We arestill entranced, living under the suggestion thateducation (knowledge) will bring us happiness.Even religion has fallen under the domain ofknowledge, and millions lap up religiousknowledge believing that religious study cansave them.

We believe that science and technology cansolve all our problems, that medicine can cureour ills, that psychology can solve our emotionalissues. Can you see how a field like psychiatry,

Page 29: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

29

which today is a combination of raw knowledgeand the substance of psychiatric meds, is but thelatest evolution of eating the forbidden fruit ofknowledge?

It is not necessarily the knowledge itself thatharms us (unless the suggestions are in error),nor the substance itself, though we know thatfood, drugs and medications can havedeleterious effects. It is a continued belief in thelie and a stubborn clinging to pride it inspiresthat keep us entranced.

When our prideful lifestyle leads to physical, financial, relationship, mental or emotionalproblems, we then double down on our belief inthe saving power of knowledge and again lookto our religious and scientific experts andauthorities to save us.If their help keeps us going a little longer, we

fail to take full advantage of our wake up calland soon go back to sleep.

For most people it takes extreme suffering, such as that of cancer treatment, to sober andwake them up from the comfort zone of culture.Likewise, some people will only wake up whenthey are literally in the gutter with their life inruins. But as every counselor knows, some willstill not wake up. Their stubborn pride finds away to continue their belief in their owninnocence, or perhaps they change allegianceand now are loyal to their new medical, technological, political, or religious savior.

Page 30: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

30

Mostly what we want is symptom removal. We want the evidence of our faulty lifestyleremoved or covered up.

Bear in mind that our error may be verysubtle. That which brings otherwise decentupstanding people to ruin is not always grossand obvious. Wrong eating and stress take theirtoll, of course, and a simple lifestyle change canbe very helpful. But the underlying error is oftenof a spiritual nature – a malevolent spirit thathides under a plastic facade of culture andpenetrates us through our interactions withothers who have been infected. From its hiddenabode within it subtly alters us and renders ussusceptible to illness that suddenly strikesseemingly out of nowhere.

Our medical men do the best they can, but it isonly the utmost awareness and a pure heart thatpermit some to discover just what it is that isharming them and also victimized those whopassed it on to them.

Many of us have wondered how decent solidcitizen people we have know suddenly fall preyto some horrific disease, especially when theylive moral lives and avoid drugs and riskybehaviors. Of course there may beenvironmental factors, exposure to toxic orcarcinogenic substances involved. Sometimesexposure to environmental toxins can enter intoa complicated relationship with inheritedsusceptibility, lowered immunity through stress, faulty eating habits and psychological factors.

But the truth that must eventually be faced isabout the faceless subtle presence within, thefamiliar spirit that masquerades as you butwhich is not you.

It is an alien entity. Hiding in the subconscious,it is a spiritual presence, which you think of asyou or a friendly familiar presence, but its realnature becomes manifest in the chaotic face ofcancer. Too horrible to admit, we prefer to denythe truth and look to other causes for our ills. But the awful truth about this entity issomething we must eventually face.

If evil of the most subtle and serpentine naturewere to have a face and a physical presence, itwould be that of cancer, the rebellion and chaosthat takes advantage of a compromised immunesystem.

If this subtle evil of which I speak were to gainaccess to the body, it would seek to hide itself, compromising the defenses of the body, andeventually subtly worming its way into thesanctum sanctorum. It would need to take overthe immune system which would otherwiseprotect the body from mutagenic factors and thechaos and rebellion it wishes to foment.

It is quite possible that this is the reason whyoncologists must often resort to treatments thatdestroy the immune system—it is an immunesystem that has been taken over andappropriated by the entity that remains unseen.

The rebel may not really be bad. He is actingout the lifestyle suggested to him as a way to be

free. At the cellular level, the rebel cells may beacting out, under the influence of the spiritualintruder.

The person who eats and drinks too much isacting out a lifestyle suggested as a way of livingit up and having a good time.

The weekly church goer may not really be anice person. He is acting out a way of lifesuggested as a way of being good andacceptable. Even the slightest falsity is a suresign that one’s behavior is being directed by thewrong spirit. Christ often warned abouthypocrisy. Many of the falsely religious did noteven realize they were acting the part of a goodperson and had not yet found the real thing. And so it is today.

Can you see the role of culture in suggesting tous a way of acting out (even religious behavior)that is conveyed through the post hypnoticsuggestions found in cultural food (or mom’scooking)? Now you will be able to read thefollowing passage and understand what Christmeant:

...Thus you have made the commandment of God ofno effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well didIsaiah prophesy about you, saying:

‘ These people draw near to Me with theirmouth,

And honor Me with their lips,But their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me,

Teaching as doctrines the commandments ofmen.’” (Matthew 15:6-9 (NKJV)

Clothing has an effect on us. So does language, rituals, and music. But food is far more subtleand profound. It is intimately connected withthe fall of the human race. Food is loaded withsuggestions, which are reinforced daily as weeat.

Just as food suggests party time, pride inambition, pride in achievement, and freedom todo whatever we want, it also reassures andcomforts us for what its suggestions have madeof us. It is under cloak of this false comfort--where we are reassured that wrong is right, andthat we are okay the way we are--that themalevolent spirit is able to function throughmillions of people who are comforted by cultureand who remain unaware that the evil evenexists.

It is for this reason that the seemingly nicestpeople are most susceptible to cancer, forexample. They believe in human niceness andhave given themselves wholeheartedly to thelove from and love of others. Sometimes a childmay develop leukemia, smothered by avampirish life sucking parent who to all theworld seems like a wonderful person. Manychildren sacrifice their whole life to a parent, who manipulates them with phony love. Theparent takes the life of the child, and the childgets the spirit of the parent.

The rebels are less likely to get cancer, becausethey see through the falsity and pretense aroundthem. But they are angry and full of rage, andlikely to self destruct with a heart attack orthrough accident, drugs and self destructivebehavior.

Bear in mind that cultural food also conveyspride in our religiously correct or politicallycorrect conformity.

The rebels have their beer and marijuana. Theconformists have their punch and cookies orwine and cheese.

Food offers a mysterious salvation and escapefor us humans. And because it offers escape andcomfort, we turn to it when our ego is hurting, when we need our anger soothed, or our anxietytaken away.

For each of us, food has both a personal historyand one that is inherited along with our heritageas a human.

When life is boring, we look for somethingdistracting or exciting. When life is boring welook for something to excite our imagination.

When life makes us uneasy and nervous oranxious, or when we have a hard time copingwith what we see, we look for escape.

Our salvation comes by way of the two-fer weget with food. It offers a pleasurable escape, aswell as comfort.

The comfort part is easy to understand. Foodfills our tummy and takes away hunger. It also isassociated with childhood memories of mother,

Page 35: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

35

her love and her food. So when our ego needscomfort, it turns to the mother love that foodrepresents.

Food's escape value is also easy to see, but hasa more profound aspect to it. The down to earthaspect is the simple fact that food offers apleasurable diversion when, for example, we eata nice meal, have a snack, or enjoy a sandwichwith the Internet, newspaper, or television. Inshort, it is a pleasant break to eat.

But in a more profound sense, food also has ahypnotic quality. It ushers in dream time. Wefloat away with our favorite food, and we arecarried away from reality. Watch peoplesometime in a restaurant. As soon as they starteating, they are gone, off in a very privatemunching world.

We celebrate with food, but we also escapewith food. When our life is not going well, whenwe have issues and problems, when we don'tfeel good about ourselves, when people areupsetting us--we turn to food for comfort andescape.

Food seems to understand us--just as a mothermight. Comforting and forgiving us, andreassuring us that everything is alright. Just assleep is an escape for some people, so is the foodtrance.

Here is another very important aspect of whywe have such a relationship with food. Food fillsthe emptiness. When we feel empty andunloved, many of us turn to food to love us.

Page 36: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

That's why many of us have food problems.A young lady whose dad is not there for her

might find a sort of substitute love in food.A married woman, who resent her husband,

may find love in food.A man, who was close to his mom, might now

be his own chef and cook for himself (therebyloving himself).

Food represents love to them--the kind of egosupporting love they got from their mother.Through food they love themselves. But theyalso hate the food.

They have a love-hate relationship with food.Food now represents their degradation, theirloss of control, their emptiness, their loss ofidentity. Behind it all is an often unadmittedhatred of father for having failed to rescue themfrom everyone else's tender mercies. It is theresentment of our father that is the majorcontributing cause of bulimia, anorexia, identityexchange, and a host of other issues many of usstruggle with.

Of course, it is a small stretch to see howmarijuana comforts and reassures certain people;or how another person will turn to alcohol ( avariation of food) to comfort himself. Cigarettes, coffee, soda or even sipping on bottled water allday offer an oral comfort reminiscent of ourearly food gratification and assurance. Theheroin addict even finds a sort of love in heroin,as it carries him away to his drug induced fog.

Page 37: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

37

Here is a key principle to bear in mind: thehuman being is created in the image of God. Oursoul should be loved and reassured by itsCreator. But most of us do not have a bond withour Creator within. Most of us have not reallyfound Him (though some will, and that is what Iam trying to help you to do). Something gets inthe way of being close to our Creator and havingHis love.

If you were to find this inner rapport withGod, then you would not need the love of theworld. You could be a good wife, husband, orneighbor, enjoying fellowship with others--butyou would not need other's love.

If you found the life of the spirit that wouldcome from within, you would not needdistractions, diversions, or escapes. You wouldenjoy reality. You would live and move andhave your being in the light and love of theCreator. Life would be exciting in a quiet way,and you would receive an invisible comfort frombeing in the good graces of God.

You would still find a modest pleasure in food, friends, work, exercise and so on. But nothingwould become too important. You could bemoderate in all your ways.

We are separated from God by pride. We donot want to become still before the inner light ofconscience and admit we are wrong. Andbecause we are avoiding conscience, we canreceive no comfort from conscience. Instead wehave to keep running from reality into

Page 38: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

38

comforting arms of whoever or whatever helpsus escape from conscience.

We are also separated from the love of Godthrough resenting and judging others. We resentour mom, dad, husband, wife, and neighbor. Weresent people for their errors and imperfections. And we harbor grudges against them. Theresentment of others separates us from the loveof God. It says in the Bible: "You cannot hateyour brother who you can see and love theFather you cannot see."

Next time you become angry and resentful--notice how you become hungrier and thirstier.Resentment and wrong living excite and awakena lust for life. But the piper has to be paid. Welose the approval of God and we becomedependent on worldly comforts to soothe ourpain. A wife can have food problems becauseshe resents and judges her husband.

God is ever ready to love and help us, but wefend Him off by running from what wewordlessly know in our heart is right. Nor willHe forgive us unless we first forgive others.

So we become locked in a love-haterelationship with people, objects and substances. We resent them, and then we love (need) themfor the distraction or comfort value they provide. But when we accept their comfort, we then hatefor what they do to us.

This love-hate aspect is also seen in such thingsas binge eating. For example, food mayrepresent mother and her will. And her will,

Page 39: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

39

which we once resented and struggled against, now is embodied in the food with which we nowstruggle. Food also represents false love.

Beneath mother's catering and food servicethere may have been a resentment of herhusband, perhaps even of the kids. Eating herfood meant accepting her will; and partaking ofher service (which she performed as acompensation for her hate and judgment) meantaccepting her will, even her resentment of yourdad.

Years later, the adult child struggles with food, having the same relationship with that food thatshe once had with mother. Just as the child had alove/hate relationship with mother andstruggled with the willfulness in her food, nowthe relationship is transferred to food (whichrepresents mother).

Understand: I'm not blaming mother.Undoubtedly her father had not been there forher, and chances are her husband was not therefor her either. She wanted something from himwhich he seemed incapable of giving. And forthis, she undoubtedly could not help but resenthim for failing her. You may one day realize thatyour resentment toward your dad is not evenyours—it is your mother's hate which youpicked up now in you. Perhaps her spirit or herguiding entity too.

If you start to meditate and wake up, you willbegin to observe many things about yourselfwhich before you were unable to see or

Page 40: Forbidden Food for Scribd - commonsensecounseling.org · The mystery of why even good people are stricken with conditions like cancer and other life threatening situations is to be

40

unwilling to see. You may, for example, discoverthat there is hate in you—a hate you are nolonger in agreement with. You may discover thatthe hate in you is not even your hate—it issomeone else's projected onto you or suggestedto you. You may, if you are like may people, oneday discover that you have your mother's hatredfor your father and for all men in you.

It is not your hate. It is this spirit of hate, ofwhich you may have been unaware, thattormented your mother and drove you tocommit atrocities, that led you into wrongrelationships, and which taught you to sabotageevery good thing.

Do not be alarmed. Just stand back andobserve it. Continue to meditate and watch allthe tricks that it plays until one day, it will leave. As you come to God, it cannot stand upon holyground, and it will be forced to leave.

When you see that it is not your hate, and thatits thoughts are not your thoughts, you need notfeel guilty any longer for what you once wereashamed of and protected. Desist fromstruggling with it. Let the Light do the work.
