    PREPARATORY PRAYER

TOGETHER: I am the way, and thetruth, and the life. No man cometh to theFather, but by me. (John 14:6)

O Jesus, I believe You. If You willed tosuffer so much in your Passion, it was notonly in order to pay for my sins, but also in

order to show me the path which leads toHeaven, in order to manifest which are themost beautiful virtues for a child of God.

O Jesus, in order to follow You better, Iwant to admire each of Your steps on theway to Calvary, and I ask You to impresson my soul all the virtues that Youpractised in a heroic degree during thoseholy hours.

O Mary, my good Mother, guide me inthe imitation of your divine Son. Help megrow in Christian virtue throughout all thetrials of my life.

Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Thrseof the Child Jesus, pray for me.

    Stabat Mater dolorosa,

    Juxta crucem lacrymosa,

    Dum pendebat Filius.

At the cross her station keeping,

    Stood the mournful Mother

    weeping,

Close to Jesus to the last.

FIRST STATIONJesus is condemned to Death

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: Because of the grave disorderof sin, suffering and death entered theworld as a satisfaction of justice. OurLord, after having seen all of our sins

during His Agony, offers to drink thechalice of all the sufferings willed by theDivine Majesty. Knowing the gravity ofour offences, He is not surprised atbeing overwhelmed with so many evils, and so He does not allow one complaint

to escape. To the degree that ourknowledge and sorrow for our sins isprofound, so will sufferings seem normalto us throughout the course of our life.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, I ask of You thegrace to maintain an intense and

profound sorrow for all my sins, so that Imight endure peacefully and generouslyall the sufferings that You send me.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

    V. Fidelium animae (optional)

    R. Amen.

    V. Lord Jesus crucified

    R. Have mercy on us.

    V. May the souls

    Cujus animam gementem,

    Contristatam et dolentem,

    Pertransivit gladius.

    Through her heart, His sorrow

    sharing,

    All his bitter anguish bearing,

Now at length the sword has passed.

SECOND STATIONJesus is made to carry His Cross

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: Jesus begins by embracing HisCross with a long look of love. From alleternity, He has loved it and desired it. Allof His fruitfulness and glory flow from His

intimate union with the Cross. This veryCross is always offered to us, under thenames of injustice, humiliation, separationfrom the world, poverty, suffering... Italways produces the same fruits. Friendsof the Cross. What a glorious title! I must

confess that I am charmed and captivatedby it. It is brighter than the sun, higherthan the heavens, more magnificent andresplendent than all the titles given tokings and emperors. It is the glorious titleof Jesus Christ, true God and true man. It isthe genuine title of a Christian (St. Louisde Montfort).

PEOPLE: O Jesus, I ask you to give me alittle of Your love of the Cross, so that itwill direct all my desires.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

    O quam tristis et afflicta,

THIRD STATIONJesus falls the First Time

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: There is no progress in theChristian life without true humility. AsSaint Augustine says: You dream ofperfection... first establish the foundation

of humility. The acquisition of this virtuecalls for three steps which correspond tothe three falls of our Saviour. The firstconsists in accepting and loving ones ownnothingness, ones misery and weakness. Thus, it is necessary to destroy every form

of self-love refusing reality or not lovingthe reality of what we are. It is a matter ofeliminating every form of independence, ofspite over ones faults, of discouragement. It is a question of loving ones own limits, being detached, often giving thanks, taking counsel.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, I know that I amnothing, that I can do nothing without You.Obtain for me, by the merits of Your fall, the grace to live this reality joyfully andprofoundly.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.V. Fidelium animae (optional)

    R. Amen.

    V. O Lord , have mercy on us.

    R. Have mercy on us.V. May the souls

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: What is the great differencebetween the saints and us? It is thatthey live in the presence of God and aremoved by the love of God. That is why

they are continually outdoingthemselves, out of joy for givingpleasure to God. The look of Jesuscrosses that of His Mother in order toask us to live in Her maternal presence, that we might advance always on the

path of virtue in the midst of all thetrials of life.

PEOPLE: O Mary, I know that since mybaptism, you have adopted me as yourchild. I know that your eyes never leaveme. Only help me to be more often

aware of your loving presence. There aregraces of encouragement in your glance.I wish to profit from them each day inorder to advance in the path of virtue.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

Quis est homo qui non fleret,

    Matrem Christi si videret,

Is there one who would not weep,

    Christs dear Mother to behold?

FIFTH STATIONSimon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry His Cross

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: Jesus wants to be solaced by aman on His way of the Cross, in order tomake us understand that everything we dofor the good of our neighbour, for the loveof God, is done for Our Lord. Thus, thepractice of fraternal charity is made easy bya spirit of faith. Amen I say to you, as longas you did it to one of these My leastbrethren, you did it to me (Matt. 25:40).

Consequently, we can comfort Our Lord byeach of our works of charity: counselling thedoubtful, instructing the ignorant, correcting sinners, consoling the afflicted, forgiving offences, patiently bearing withthose under our charge, praying for the

living and the dead, visiting the sick, givingalms.PEOPLE: O Jesus, I want to prove my love

to You by doing good to every member ofYour Mystical Body.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

    V. Lord Jesus crucified

    Quis non posset contristari,

    Dolentem cum Filio?

    Can the human heart refrain,

    From partaking in her pain,

    In that Mothers pain untold?

SIXTH STATIONVeronica wipes the Face of Jesus

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuamredemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    bless Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thouhast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: True love of God leads us not onlyto eliminate our own sinfulness, but also to doeverything to diminish it in the soul of ourneighbour. Alas, we do not care enough about

this and it is not even uncommon that we dragour neighbour into sin by injurious words, bymovements of anger, by criticism ordetraction. By wiping the face of Our Lordcovered with blood and spittle, Saint Veronicashows us how generous we should be in

seeking to diminish the stains of sin in the soulof our neighbour, for the love of God.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, I know that I can lead myneighbour into sin through my acts or mywords. I beseech You to help me that I mightnever allow myself to commit this evil, but

rather that I may be attentive to draw myneighbour away from sin.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

SEVENTH STATIONJesus falls the Second Time

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    nedicimus tibi.

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: The second degree of humilityconsists in loving to have our nothingness andmisery known by our neighbour in the samedegree that we know it. It is a question of

avoiding all seeking of the esteem of others. That is why the humble soul easilyacknowledges his faults and his limitations toothers. Moreover, he attributes to God and tothose who have helped him all the good thathe does. Allow others to consider you to be

imperfect. That is what is necessary, for thenyou can practise humility, which consists notonly in thinking and saying that you are full offaults, but in being happy that others think andsay so. (St. Thrse of Lisieux)

PEOPLE: O Jesus, help me to love to live inthe truth, to accept being known for what I

truly am, a sinful creature. I know that, in yourgoodness and mercy, you only incline towardsthe humble. That is why I seek this virtue.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    R. Miserere nostri.

    V. Fidelium animae (optional)

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

    R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: Our Lord meets with a group ofwomen who weep at seeing how He is beingtreated. Jesus could have made use of theircompassionate dispositions in order to explain

His pains and sufferings, to speak of Himself. But no, His regard remains fixed on God, onGod being offended, and He invites them to dopenance, to suffer with Him in reparation fortheir sins and those of their neighbours.Meditation on the way of the Cross should lead

to a more generous practice of voluntarypenance, in order to participate better in thework of redemption. Let us not be friends of

Jesus Crucified only in appearance andsentiment, but in truth and action.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, remind me often of this

duty of voluntary penance. O Mary, you whohave recalled the necessity of this practice ineach of your apparitions, obtain for me thegrace to be more generous and more regularin its exercise.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: The third degree of humilityconsists in desiring to be treated according towhat we are, namely, to be forgotten becausewe are nothing, and to be humiliated because

we are sinners. O Jesus! Grant that no onecare about me, that I be trodden under foot, forgotten like a little grain of sand! As Isaiassays: Jesus was without beauty, withoutcomeliness; His face was, as it were, hidden...I also want to be like Jesus, without comeliness

or beauty, unknown to every creature. I havesought to be a forgotten flower whose perfumeis only exhaled next to the cross. (St. Thrseof Lisieux) When you are corrected, do morethan submit yourself. Be joyful and say thankyou. (Sr. Elizabeth of the Trinity) To beforgotten by God, mistreated by men, that is

what we deserve, for we have offended theInfinite Goodness.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, give me also this profounddesire to be forgotten and humiliated, so that Imight acquire humility and live according tothe truth.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: God looks at the heart, onesintentions, much more than at onesactions. And unfortunately many of our

words and actions are tainted: self-loveis mingled in, or self-interest, vanity, sensitivity, egoism. In order to make upfor this deceit, this hypocrisy in ourhearts, Our Lord in sorrow is despoiledof his garments. He appears to the eyes

of all such as He is: the man of sorrowsfor the love of God and souls. Too often,we have a cloak of appearance whichhides our miserable interior.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, help me by themerits of all your holy wounds, to purifymy intentions before acting or speaking.May the pure love of God always reignover my thoughts.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

    praise Thee.

    R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: In as much as we are creatures,we have a simple and sufficient means ofsanctifying ourselves always andeverywhere: the generous fulfilment of the

will of God, for the love of God. Thisrequires a continual renouncement ofones own will and ca-prices. St. Thrse ofthe Child Jesus said: From the age of four,I have never refused anything of the goodGod. In order to make reparation for all of

our resistance to the will of God, Our Lordaccepts the most sorrowful dependencepossible: that of the three nails. Theysymbollise the three Divine Persons whoare owed a generous submission on ourpart.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, You found the strength

to go forward on this terrible way of theCross, because You had in the depth of

Your heart an ideal: the will of the Father.Help me keep the same ideal in the depthsof my heart throughout the course of mydays.

PRIEST: I say to you, Love yourenemies: do good to them that hateyou: and pray for them that persecute

and calumniate you (Matt. 5:43). Thiscommandment greatly surpasseshuman forces. Only mercy can be thecrowning of charity. It is the triumph ofgood over evil. It is the victory of charityover sin. With mercy, there is not only

question of patiently sufferinginjustices, of taking a distance fromones persecutors, but also of actingpositively for the spiritual good of ourenemies. St. Thrse of the Child Jesusrendered all the services possible to animpossible old sister.

PRIEST: Behold your Mother! By this wordon the cross, Jesus confides the Most Holy Virginto us for our spiritual life. This is what St. Thrse

will call the way of spiritual childhood, whosesecret is found in Marian devotion. This way, away of complete simplicity, rests on love for, ormore precisely on confidence in andabandonment to the Most Holy Virgin. Thrsealways had recourse to her Mother in heaven, inorder to prepare herself for Communion, and also

to hold up well in the midst of sufferings or giveproper counsel to her novices. She loved toconfide in Our Lady: I do not hide anything fromthe Most Holy Virgin; I tell Her all. She loved tocontemplate the Christian virtues shown forththroughout the life of the Mother of God.

PEOPLE: O Jesus, You Who entrusted us toYour Holy Mother on the cross, help me dependmore and more on Her, in following the way ofspiritual childhood taught by St. Thrse.

    CONCLUDING PRAYER

O Jesus, You are the Way which leads to

perfection. Narrow is the way which leads tosanctity, and You are the one Who hastraced it. I desire to meditate often on thisWay of the Cross, in order to find thestrength to go forward always on the rightpath.

O Jesus, I feel that I am still so sinful! Thatis why I beg that Your Blood and Your mercymight purify me completely.

O Jesus, I feel so weak and unstable. I begYour grace that I might be sustained on thislong way of the Christian life.

O Mary, be my joy and my consolation. Itrust in you. I am your child. Show me thatyou are my Mother.

Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Thrse ofthe Child Jesus, direct me, pray for me.

One Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Gloria, at

least, should be said for the intentions of theSovereign Pontiff. This will fulfil the requirements for aplenary indulgence connected to this devotion so aslong as a person also fulfils other requirements.

Then, the priest gives the BLESSING.

THIRD STATIONJesus falls the First Time

    V. Adoramus te, Christe et be-

nedicimus tibi.R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam

    redemisti mundum.

    V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we

praise Thee.R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou

    hast redeemed the world.

PRIEST: Be humbled in the sight ofthe Lord, and he will exalt you. (James4:10)

If we fall so easily into sin, it isbecause of the depth of our pride. It isso difficult for us to truly recognise ourfaults, to abase ourselves before God,to humble ourselves and remainhumble. This is why our contrition does

not bear lasting fruits.PEOPLE: O Jesus, in virtue of the

merits of this fall, obtain for me thegrace to say truthfully about each sin:It is my fault, it is my fault, it is mymost grievous fault! O Jesus, help me

to maintain the attitude of thepublican in the Gospel who lowered hishead, struck his breast, and humbledhimself before God and men.

    V. Miserere nostri, Domine.R. Miserere nostri.

much sin is an outrage to the honour ofGod.PEOPLE: O Holy Virgin, remember

that you are also my Mother, and thatit is you who must form in me the soulof a child of God. Speak so well to my

PRIEST: Be humbled in the sight of theLord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:10)

The Christian life is a continual combat

against the enemy within us which St. Johncalls the triple concupiscence. If we fall backso often into the same faults and return tothe same circumstances, it is because wecease this combat, we allow ourselves tofollow the movements of our nature,

wounded by Original Sin. How easy it wouldbe for us to be vigilant every day andcombative against our predominant fault, and so prove to God that we love Him morethan ourselves! But alas, we lack a firm dailyintention, and Jesus falls another time, burdened with the thousand faults that weshould have been able to easily avoid. Howterrible! How sad!

Green wood is full of sap, supernatural life, but in us there is alot of dry wood, works that are deadbecause they are wicked. One day, thedry wood will be cast into the fire ofPurgatory or of Hell. Let us fear the

just chastisement of God, which will beterrible, for God is not mocked. If thelove of God in me does not alwayssuffice for conquering temptations, may at least the fear of punishmenthelp me not to fall back into sin.

body be cast into hell. (Matt. 5:29)Impurity is the most common sin. In orderto be free from it, Our Lord demands of usthe generous sacrifice of all occasions of sin, particularly those which involve the senses ofsight and touch. To be determined in thisregard, we must have a great love for

chastity, by which the soul becomes strong, loving, and enlightened. It is the virtue of themartyrs, apostles, saints, and simple andstraightforward souls. Without this virtue, the entire edifice of the Christian life isforever placed in danger.
